Holy, true melee looks like an actual fucking nightmare, especially with the bosses that actively fly away from you and shoot while you try to hit and avoid their projectiles while needing to be up in their face
It's honestly not that bad. DoG is really difficult but Providence, Cryogen and Calamitas clone are by far the worst. Even vanilla Retinazer and to a lesser extent Moon lord are a nightmare with true melee. A lot of the actual harder bosses are pretty doable, you mostly get gimmicked by the handful of bosses that move too fast for you to really chase.
@@_bustion_1928 he ditched true melee at that point because fighting a boss which spends 95 percent of time being at fixed distance from you where you can't reach them isn't fun.
Kind of crazy to think that Calamity in a way actually has more mercy on true melee than vanilla does by not making bosses break your fucking spine every time the player sprite vaguely overlaps with them. That meat crab and Golem fight back to back are like a night and day difference.
Contact damage is dumb, I always appreciate it when games don't just rely on contact damage, it just feels cheap. Especially if they already have melee attacks.

We have the capabilities to let enemies have full on attack animations for practically everything, unless you are going for something akin to older video games, or specifically genres like jump and runs, contact damage is just ass. Imagine a souls-like game with contact damage, pure unfiltered ass.

And then you just use some bug to your andvantage because you have brains, either it be running out of temple with hoik or some invincibilty machine, dosent matter, and now he again can't do shit to you. Honestly, all this boss needs is a fucking proper, not random, big arena, but still with some gimmics, like some traps here and there would be intresting. And thats it. I cannot comprehend how re-logic can't understand that in the game where every playthrough should be different from another in all aspects, including equipment, stats, etc., damage-check boss dosen't fucking work. And that it can't be anything else with this moveset and arena. (Yeah, yeah, ofcourse you can master him to the point that you can dodge his attacks even in average low-budget apartment, but would it be intresting? For me don't)

The boss concept is just kind of ill-considered in the first place, it's almost impossible to make Golem actually engaging to fight because he's mostly just a stationary slab of health in a tiny-ass arena. He either smothers you in shit or you win the dps race easily with absolutely nothing inbetween. Apparently Calamity devs figured the issue was that he didn't smother you in shit well enough when the real issue is that the fight dynamic is just kinda broken.
Is every modded terraria boss either: A) an entirely static sprite that floats mid air and perfectly tracks your position with its movement making it undodgeable, or B) a long ass worm that takes up the entire screen making it undodgeable?
Calamity is kind of notorious for overusing worm bosses. Short worms, long worms, bosses with worm phases, worm bosses summoning other worms. Dog is considered the mascot for a reason. Flying PNG that vomits projectiles and occassionally bumrushes you is kind of just how 80% of this game's "elite" enemies are designed even in vanilla, though.
i mean yeah you can describe anything in a demeaning way to make it sound ass, but true melee gameplay is giga scuffed and makes the game look cancer to play because its basically a facetanking class in the early/midgame and in post moonlord becomes run away until you get adrenaline and then melt a third of the bosses health, repeat. adding range into the equation unsurprisingly makes the game way more playable considering many bosses almost play like shmups with more freedom of movement

For bosses with non-exclusive debuffs like Armor Crunch on Golem or Ichor on The Perforators, the Laudanum accessory is really effective for survivability.
I just beat calamity revengence mode with melee and then death mode with rouge and an exploit that gave some rouge weapons infinite stealth strikes, and by staying as far away from the bosses as i could. This is hell Upon further thinking mr. Bino here is going to suffer at Providence, ceaseless void, d.o.g. and S. Calamitas

A few things on early HM true melee and calamity in general. Bladetongue is busted good, and has innate ichor, this let's you melt any worm, and you could skip the long Cryogen fight, then going for Aquatic Scourge as the 1st HM boss is key, since the True melee weapon it drops easily triples your dps, even if it's really short range, so save up Adrenalin then melt. This is pretty much the only weapon you need for anything till plantera, though you can consider upgrading Bladetongue to the Infernal Cutter, as a normal swing type weapon to use while waiting for adrenaline. As for general knowledge, the Deep Diver should be gotten instantly after entering HM, since it's the 1st Ram dash you can get, and after 2 mechs and Cryogen you can upgrade to the Ornate Shield. Pair these with the Slagsplitter Pauldron, this turns your 70 to 100 dps dashes on to 2k dps enemy damage reduction reducing debuff too. So spamming this to get Ram i-frames, rebuff the boss, do massive damage from the dash and get massive damage from your weapon too.
When built around, True melee is for a fact the strongest Class in Calamity over a whole playthrough. Like any class it does have fights it struggles with, but aside from that you can melt mist bosses in less then a minute with it.
I genuinely hate bosses when during half of their moveset they just move away from you at accelerating speed, so that player can't catch up "For Sure". And it's not like it's only in modded, Twins do that too, but at least after lasering it goes into dash mode every 5-7 sec. In Calamity bosses can go on and on with their ranged attacks and if you don't play range, you need till they stop yapping with their endless "epic" attacks. All that said, big respect to Albino and his patience. I guess hitting other targets to proc range effects on true melee is banned, because that's just range but with extra steps. But also, frick those bosses.
I'm pretty sure the main reason spawning king slime is seen as cheating is due to the hearts he spawns when defeated, allowing you to spam the spawn every time it dies to heal, but in a true melee run that does seem a bit sketchy, still, do what you will
@@bevvvy1374 no, it's cheating cause you're essentially creating a nurse npc and also a area of damage, calamity disables the nurse during boss fights, and true melee is about hit your TARGET to deal extra damage
