It's easy to forget that Buffy is still young enough to get grounded by her mom. She's way more mature than her mom even knows. Those Gorch brothers were based on fictional characters from a classic western, The Wild Bunch (1969).
I guess this is an unpopular episode, but I've always loved it. It's rare we get an opener like this one - buffer and her mom shopping in the mall and Buffy discovering a vampire through the mirror then the humor onwards...I guess I've always like this troupe as well.
Buffy homage to Invasion of the Body Snatchers - with a heaping reminder that no matter how much evil she's expected to fight... Buffy is still a sixteen year old CHILD! We get so used to seeing her as The Slayer that sometimes we forget how truly young she is. Buffy should be worrying about boys and clothes and school instead of vampires and demons and apocalypses, but she is the Chosen One and it sucks, a lot. Particularly when you realize most slayers never make it to 18.
This ep is a great example of the show's peculiar strength. The "A" plot is...well, it's there. The "B" plot of the Gorches goes...nowhere. BUT they are fun Creeps of the Week. Lyle Gorch is one of the smarter vampires to visit Sunnydale. I mean, he can take a hint. And the ep is filled with clever dialogue, character relationship development and some world building.
This episode is nothing special…but then, it's not meant to be. With the show getting a big push from the network (due to an upcoming schedule change), this is basically a "palate-cleanser" episode, to remind new viewers of who the characters are and what's going on. Buffy has mom trouble (I gave Joyce a LOT of slack in "Ted" but when she's too busy grounding Buffy to notice the *HUGE PURPLE BRUISE* on Buffy's forehead…GRRR), Buff likes kissing Angel, Xander and Cordelia can't quit each other, Willow is smart and cute…all the basics, right there. I could watch this episode 1000 times. "But a thin streetwalker! [beat] That's probably not going to be the winning argument, is it?" "Tardy people show" "You…Angel…Big…Smoochies?" "Shut…Up." "It's an egg, Buffy. It doesn't emote." "I slipped. I fell." "This is all YOUR fault!" "How??" I just bathe in the Buffy-ness. (Also, Sarah Michelle Gellar looks strangely hot in the black goo. I'm just saying.) (On a more-serious note, I adore how Buffy's thought went *immediately* to Willow's safety after slaying the egg-creature. That's a true friend, there.)
I thought Bad Eggs was possibly one of the weakest episodes of the series. A real filler to be honest. There are 144 episodes of BTVS they all can't be brilliant, however the E13 and E14 two parter to follow are superb, absolute bangers. Obviously this episode is a homage to 1950s classic horror film Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. Not much more to really say about this, so much better to come.
One thing I don't like is similar as school hard buffy runs off in a crisis to help and here Joyce grounds her but not before. That's all that bothers me

Well that was an interesting episode... much better stuff to come though :) Great reaction Jay :)
Agree, an okay but weaker episode. Good news is season two definitely picks up from here.
Patiently waiting for you to get to the finale of Charmed season 8 👓
