This is where shit starts to pop off in spectacular fashion.
The real MVP is the smooching.
Willow saying " You could be...my date." is the single cutest moment in the history of the universe.
Brilliant writing from Whedon, and SMG and Boreanz BRING It.
Poor Xander "Mom, hi it's me" Pause. "Xander."
And Drusilla gets ever creepier and more disturbing.
But the most important thing is that a special birthday tradition is established...
He may not be waiting long, but original fans didn't have to either, as we only had to wait 22 hours because the series moved from Mondays at 9:00 pm with this episode to Tuesdays at 8:00 pm with the next episode.
This is where the show starts to get really good
it was always really good
I was wincing the minute I saw the thumbnail. Poor you, I was worried this one might give ya a heart attack.
Well, surprise is truly an understatement.... one of the most beautiful moments between Buffy and Angel and then that ending.... now we can really get things started! Great reaction Jay :)
Dream sequences always played a big part in The Buffyverse. We could see Buffy's prophetic dreams re: harm coming to Angel. This episode Surprise, is where this show really starts to seriously pick up regarding the arc of the Season. We see Jenny being visited by her strange uncle looking for revenge. The excitement from Drusilla and Spike when The Judge comes back to life is great. Buffy on her birthday gets her Surprise party, Oz steals the show, and is just so laid back when Willow explains to him about everything. Without doubt the coolest character in The Buffyverse. The title Surprise is still coming to Buffy, we see her losing her virginity to Angel here, but see Angel in such pain in the rain at the end after what has happened. There is of course a sinister reason for this. This is really a two-parter with E14 which is just exceptional.
You know how Angel said he fed on a Romani girl and her clan cursed him? Jenny is a descendant from that clan.
Seize the fish! I think one of the points of the egg episode was to show that Buffy and Angel were on the verge of doing it, but Willow does a lot to prompt her into it.
It's going to be funny when Buffy and Giles really DO end up running that office-supply place in Vegas. Maybe THEN Buffy will take her prophecy dreams seriously.
(Did you notice that Angel is wearing his ring in that first dream, even before he ever showed it to Buffy? But Buffy can "see" it.
Also, the whole bit with Willow speaking French to the monkey [about how the hippo stole his pants] is a call-back to Willow and Oz's convo at the end of What's My Line. Which, since this is *Buffy's* dream means that Willow told Buffy EVERYTHING about her talk with Oz, and Buffy paid attention. So that's a really nice friendship bit.)
I'm glad that Oz is taking it slow with Willow (it's been two months since "What's My Line', so perhaps even too slow?) and it's good that he takes the time to reassure her that he doesn't have any STDs (maybe he was waiting to get his test back and make sure that he really is "clean" from that last groupie he ditched?), but that's still a few steps ahead of where Willow is, bro. It's BUFFY who's about to "break her plate", IYKWIM. Willow hasn't even been kissed yet.
Because when writer Marti Noxon started on the series, she was finishing up the half-done "What's My Line Part 1" and had to pad it out with useless scenes (we don't need to see Giles tell Xander to ask Cordelia for a ride when that's literally the next scene, Marti) she overcompensated here and there are literally a dozen extra scenes that had to be cut for time. For example, there's a whole sequence where Xander and Cordelia try to "come out of the utility closet" about their dating…Cordelia asks Harmony (Harmony isn't in the final cut, but you can see Mercedes McNabb's name in the credits) if may Xander is kind of cute, and that goes so badly that CC has to fall back on "just kidding!" to get out of it, and then Xander asks Willow if maybe, since Cordelia's been helping so much, they should reconsider if she's changed, and Willow (being awesome) tries, but can't really accept Cordelia, so Xander dies a little inside. And then Xander finds out about Oz being Willow's date and gets INSTANTLY jealous so that whole bit about "you didn't have a date"/"I sure didn't" hits a lot different when you know…
…but the scene I *really* want to see is the one Marti DIDN'T write, the one where Jenny takes Angel back to his place to get changed. Not because I'm expecting Jenny to try and hop in the shower with Angel and "break up" Buffy and Angel like that (she's probably have more luck with Horny Virgin Buffy, lol), but now that we know about Jenny's past, I think seeing her in Angel's apartment, wondering about this new life he's built when she knows what he did, would be *so* full of tension, not to mention the contrast between Jenny being in the apartment thinking and what happens when Buffy gets there at the end…
Also, given that Jenny was Buffy and Angel's ride (LMAO at Angel trying to squeeze into Jenny's tiny little VW!), that means she was waiting in the car while Buffy and Angel were saying "goodbye' at the docks. I can just imagine her being all "Enough with the kissing already, Angel! Just get on the damn boat!"
Poor Jenny ("Jana"), lol. Soooooo close! Ah, well. You tried.
Yeah, this is where shit gets real.
to be continued....my ass! haha that made me laugh.
Jay, do you remember the excellent potential shown in the last episode of Season 1 when Buffy said, "Giles, I'm sixteen... I don't want to die." And the rest of the episode after that? Here's where the show digs into that potential and crushes it! Strap in and hold on for a wild ride!
It begins
Yeah, this episode made me cry twice
When I first watched this, I guessed that because slayers killed vampires, maybe Slayer juices (sweat, etc) were like Holy Water and Angel was being burned.
Don't forget. When you get to season 4 of BUFFY, you'll also need to start on ANGEL. After season 4, episode 1 of BUFFY, watch season 1 episode 1 of ANGEL. Then do that, alternating shows one episode at a time. There's a bit of continuity between shows, so, it's better to do it that way.
But do not watch the opening credits of the first episode of both shows
Oh, it's that point in the show...
Yesss HERE. WE. GO!!!
Great reaction. Lot of MVPs in this one. Great episode and the next one is even better.
And welcome to Buffy the Vampire Slayer!!!
yesss finally
