OMG!! It took me one full day to watch this video and follow along with Mike step by step to complete this file. I had to stop and rewind the video many times to understand and complete the DAX formulas. I learned how to create a table, new columns , Dax formulas, different visualization with charts, cards, matrix, and many more. This was sure a comprehensive video. At the end of the day, I had a huge headache, but it was worth it. THANKS A MILLION MIKE!!! You make learning fun.
From our Teamate, pa beader, we want to Define the terms used in the video with more accuracy (In this video I used the term "Dashboard" incorrectly). 1) Report = Power BI File Created with Desktop that contains the Tabs (Pages), Data Sets and Data Model. 2) Each Report is connected to One Data Set. 3) Tab in Power BI File = a Page a set of visuals. 4) Dashboard = a place to pin visuals in Power BI Service website. A Dashboard can contain visuals from different Reports and Data Sets.
Hi Mike: in PowerBI How do we calculate cumulative balance for financial data like balance sheet Asset/Liability accounts. in essence the calculation is Asset 1 balance in march is Balance beginning of year + accumulated transactions during the year on same account number. Example: Account 1211 Accumulated balance in July = balance as of 20xx/01/01 + All transactions booked on account 1211 up until end of July I couldn't solve this issue nor could i find solution online...is it possible for you to make video about it? it seems that many people has it, found in my search many questions but no concrete answer..
Most comprehensive and all-in introduction to Power BI. Its a tour de force, highly recommended and must watch for beginners and intermediates too. What an achievement!
Thank you, Mike, for your outstanding classes. You are very talented for teaching, yet you are a very humble guy. your free classes here on youtube are better than paid classes.
Mike, when creating a calendar using DAX you can add in Quarter by using Format just like you did for Month. Quarter = Format(dDate[Date], "Q") Another way to prevent hidden date tables from being created is to turn off that functionality. Options and settings > Options > Current File: Data Load > uncheck Auto Date/Time under Time Intelligence
Aewsome effort Mike. Also love that you have timings documented so you can quickly refer to parts you wish to go through again. Your students are lucky to have someone like you!

ExcelIsFun Hi Mike, I have a question for power BI that bothers me few days and I can’t find a solution for it.I have created the last year year to date (LY YTD) figures and year to date (YTD) figures from original sales data in power BI using measures. And I have also created three customer groups based on the LY YTD and YTD using measures. I would like to place the groups in power BI slicer so the other users can simply choose the group that they want to see and the sales report will show. But looks like we can’t place measures in slicer. I have tried the below methods but none of them work: 1, create columns instead of measure for LY YTD and YTD. However, it’s not working as they appeared to have dependency issue. 2, using SWITCH functions tried to link the measures with the sales report, still not working. The demonstration video that I looked at only shows the total figure, but I would like to have the list of all the customers that under the selected group. 3, I’ve tried the VAR logictest but the similar issue as method 2. Do you have any suggestions? I’m not quite sure whether I’m on the right track to solve my issue but each method is so close to my expected result... really really appreciate your advise! 😊
@@emmafeng55 I am not sure exactly without seeing a small replica of your larger model that can illustrate all the parameters in the problem. In general, if you want something in a slicer, you gotta put it is a table and put the table in the model with the correct relationship lines. If it was just customer group, then the customer attribute would go in Customer table. Maybe you need the LY YTD and YTD sales as amounts in column in customer table!?!?! If you can make a small model in Excel with your tables and customers and so on, amd give me an example of the final result, I am pretty sure I could figure it out... Can you do that?
@@excelisfun Hi Mike, yes i do tried to create the customer group in a new table and I'm not quite sure whether because my background linkage formula is incorrect so its not successfully link. If it's not too much trouble can I send you the small part of the data and you can have a look? May I have your email address? thanks a lot~~
@@emmafeng55 not a small part of the data. Send a complete parallel but much smaller model that shows your situation, state what your model is, what the goal is, and an example of what the end result is (maybe a few examples of what the correct answer would be). Mike everything has been already written from others. Remarkable work as an instructor/tutor. I started from power querry lessons and moved forward, at this point I am grateful not only for these online courses but because you explain the way things are function. My learning key is based on understanding the concept before gain the experience (trials and errors) - you give us this knowledge in most of the times with fun! Thank you for all
Once again you never dissapoint... You are a great inspiration and awesome teacher to learn from. Most of what I know came from your lessons. Thanks you so much....
I recently started learning some VBA. Writing formulas in steps is makes them much easier to read; especially when declaring variables inside of DAX it makes it super easy to come back and edit.
One comment: You are calling your reports "dashboards", but it may be wise to call them "Reports" because "Reports" and "Dashboards" are distinctively different things in Power BI Service. It took me a long time to understand the difference at the start of my Power BI learning journey, and I thought it would be important to establish the terminologies especially if the audience tends to be at a beginning proficiency. Btw, MSPTA has been an awesome series, Mike! I always recommend your channel for those who want to teach Excel to themselves, and now I can do the same for Power BI.
These terms are very important. I guess I made a mistake. I thought that the file was the "report", and each tab in the report was a Dashboard. Is that not correct? Is this more correct: 1) File = Report, 2) Tab = Tab, 3) Dashboard is a place to Pin particular pieces of Reports in online BI Service website ?
@@HachiAdachi I am working on a new video based on your comment and pa's comment : ) Thanks for you two Teammates for helping me to get it more right : )
This video is amazing. Power BI has apparently gone through a few updates since it was made and a few of the buttons have been renamed or moved around, but I was still able to follow along. Particularly the NLP at the very end did a much better job of interpreting my input. Thank you so much for this video. What a great free tool!
Although part of the contents are already touched upon a bit in previous or other videos, still this one is complete and more insightful, really worth to spend the time and effort in this one, learn not only the operation method, tricks, but also more important, logical behind. Awesome course, really appreciated for sharing
You are welcome! Yes, my classes are less about the flashy, and more about the technical formulas stuff and about the concepts and whys. I am glad that it all helps you, zhou!!
I just love Mike videos because he always finds a way to explain and illustrate concepts that otherwise would be difficult to understand. Thank you very much Excelisfun channel.
You are welcome!!!! I HAVE to figure out a way to illustrate the difficult, or else a guy like me (not too smart) would never understand it either : ) Thank you very much for your support, Carlos!!!!
This is just another amazing and phenomenal video form Mike Girvin. There are golden nuggets at every turn, I would truly be lost without his training and expertise. Thank you so much
An epic video indeed. It took me 4 days to work through the example myself as you showed step-by-step the entire process. It was worth every minute of time spent as always! Thanks.
What a video Mike..!!! Lots of world class tips and tricks that might take an individuals months to figure out and understand. I installed Nov update and didn’t see the new relationship view pop-ups. I had to go Microsoft page to figure this out. Thanks for raising this and directing me to the right channel. Continue changing the world as Power BI Desktop Does 🌷🌷
Thanks Mike. Awesome again. Just like Die Hard 2, Die Harder... The sequel was as good as the original. This video is is as good, if not better than MSPTDA 15. Great work.
thank you for this excellent video Michael. I haven't stop watching. It is so detail, clear, relevant and on point. It is exactly what you called it -comprehensive example. You're such a great teacher - i know this as I've followed through your excel videos and learnt so much. Though it's a lot to follow and grasp from this, it is worth it. You made power BI fun and enjoyable for me. You just made it so easy and fun. I always look forward to listening and learning from you. Thank you so much. i highly recommend this video.
Just a quick note: Power BI uses the term Dashboard in a very specific way. It is a place to Pin particular pieces of Reports. What I find odd is you can only make use of it through the Power BI Service website. So you can't actually make Power BI Dashboards with the app. Not sure if that was confusing anybody else.
A File created with Desktop = Report and Dataset A tab in a Report = Page A Dashboard is a place to pin visuals... Also, they make a point of noting that each Report(collection of Pages) is connected to one Dataset. That's where a Dashboard is a bit more flexible in that it's visuals can come from many different Datasets.

I greatly appreciate your Power BI insructional video and have learned so much compared to other Power BI videos. I took note step by step and found that the Ave Daily Gross Profit measure was not covered in the Power Query editor fTransactions field and was not available when you started creating the Dashboard. So I created the DAX forumla looking at the 016-MSPTDA-Excel file for Ave Daily Gross Profit as shown below. Ave Daily Gross Profit = AVERAGEX( dDate,[Total Gross Profit] ) measure in Power Query but the Total COGS $267,510.50 had different numbers than what is shown in the video when adding it to the values field in the Dashboard. Is the excel fact sheet source data using slightly different numbers? Please address this!
Thanks sir for such an epic video. For me, dealing with date is the hardest part. For example, when analyse the retail sales, because of the difference between the weekdays and weekends in this year and last year, the sameperiod measure should not be used or elses Running total projection would therefore be distorted. I wish Excel would have the measures or formula to easily find the matching weekdays/weekends between diferrent years.
One more day in lockdown and learn one more tutorial, Quite similar to previous one as comparing in DAX but nice visuals. Thank you much for sharing. It's simply Greatt...

Hi Mike. You've left a measure out around 53:02. You've dragged the Ave Daily Gross Profit into the Value field, but in previous steps you did not show how you've calculate it.
Yes he forgot to throw that in. You will note that in the screen shot before, ave daily gross profit measure is not yet created, and then it somehow appears. This in no way diminishes the magnitude of the greatness of this video. I think that the formula Mike would use is Ave Daily Gross Profit = averagex(ddate,[Total Gross Profit])

What sort of reports and dashboards are you making?
Mike everything has been already written from others. Remarkable work as an instructor/tutor. I started from power querry lessons and moved forward, at this point I am grateful not only for these online courses but because you explain the way things are function. My learning key is based on understanding the concept before gain the experience (trials and errors) - you give us this knowledge in most of the times with fun! Thank you for all
You are welcome, Thodoris!!!! Thanks for your support with your comments and thumbs ups!
Wow, I really love how you show the material. Ultra Clear, with lots of explanation. Great job!
Glad you like the ultra clear DAX fun!!!!
GREAT VIDEO, Instruction and Instructor. I'm retired and still enjoy keeping abreast to the developments in the Data Analysis arena
Thanks for the kind words, Ron!!!! It IS exciting with all these new tools! Thank you for supporting with those comments, Thumbs Ups and a Sub : )
Mike you enthusiasm for you passion is inspiring.
Excellent sir Mike
You gave us superb fun to play numbers
Once again you never dissapoint... You are a great inspiration and awesome teacher to learn from. Most of what I know came from your lessons. Thanks you so much....
I recently started learning some VBA. Writing formulas in steps is makes them much easier to read; especially when declaring variables inside of DAX it makes it super easy to come back and edit.
Thanks for thought, Mueez!!!
Now I am confused. I thought that the file was the "report", and each tab in the report was a Dashboard. Is that not correct?
These terms are very important. I guess I made a mistake. I thought that the file was the "report", and each tab in the report was a Dashboard. Is that not correct? Is this more correct: 1) File = Report, 2) Tab = Tab, 3) Dashboard is a place to Pin particular pieces of Reports in online BI Service website ?
I think you got it right in your other comment (referencing pa beader)! Thanks!
You are welcome, Tim!
Learnt alot from this takes an MVP expert to give you this level of intensive crash course teaching and it is free. Godsend.
This is just another amazing and phenomenal video form Mike Girvin. There are golden nuggets at every turn, I would truly be lost without his training and expertise. Thank you so much
You are welcome, David! For those gold nuggets, I only charge a comment and a thumbs up (and a sub too). Thanks for the payment, David Pellatt : )
An epic video indeed. It took me 4 days to work through the example myself as you showed step-by-step the entire process. It was worth every minute of time spent as always! Thanks.
Glad you like it, Rob!!!! Much more to come : ) Thanks for your support on each video : )
Thank you so much, Mike. Your wisdom, your knowledge and above all, your spirit of ALTRUISM is exceptional and always inspiring.
You are welcome! Thanks for your support and for your kind words : ) : )
What a video Mike..!!!
Lots of world class tips and tricks that might take an individuals months to figure out and understand.
I installed Nov update and didn’t see the new relationship view pop-ups. I had to go Microsoft page to figure this out. Thanks for raising this and directing me to the right channel.
Continue changing the world as Power BI Desktop Does 🌷🌷
Another amazing material ! Thanks a lot.

Can't find the words to compliment this and other videos from your channel, and the effort you put when trying to explain things. Thank you!👏 🤓
The effort is worth it if it leads to more understanding : )
I bought a mug to drink to the greatness of this video. Cheers!
Thank you very much, Robert : )
This video, PDF files and work files are all amazing, truly ...amazing.
Thanks Mike. Awesome again. Just like Die Hard 2, Die Harder... The sequel was as good as the original. This video is is as good, if not better than MSPTDA 15. Great work.
Together they rock!!!!! Thanks for the great Die Hard simile, and thanks for the support, Matt!!!!!!
thank you for this excellent video Michael.
You are welcome for the clear and to the point videos, Olu!!!!!
I am taking off tomorrow to watch this video :D

You are welcome so much! I have been waiting to post for so long!!!!! Thanks as always for your great support, Syed : ) : )
A File created with Desktop = Report and Dataset
A tab in a Report = Page
A Dashboard is a place to pin visuals...
Also, they make a point of noting that each Report(collection of Pages) is connected to one Dataset. That's where a Dashboard is a bit more flexible in that it's visuals can come from many different Datasets.
@@pabeader1941 Thanks very much pa beader!!!!! I just pinned a comment to the top so your refined terms can help the Team!!!! Go Team : )
I am a new bee to Power BI, ealier to this learnt Tableau.

Power Pivot Video and practicing was fun last Week. This is another Challenge !!! :) DAX formula in a straight line view is much much more readable for me. Beautiful Staff. Thanks Mike :) :)
Yes, John, we are hard core Excel Array Formula People and so we can read, but most DAX people use that formatting... : (
I respect that :) cause that's coding formatting and not formulas method. Anyway, this is great Fun. :)

I'm with you, I find the formatting a bit confusing when you first come across it.
I'm used to it now but still type my own stuff in a line but try to format if posting a question.
Ave Daily Gross Profit =
AVERAGEX(
dDate,[Total Gross Profit]
)
measure in Power Query but the Total COGS $267,510.50 had different numbers than what is shown in the video when adding it to the values field in the Dashboard. Is the excel fact sheet source data using slightly different numbers? Please address this!
such a great content!!! as always thanks for sharing!!! :D
You are welcome!
Yet another EPIC video! Such rich content! Thank you Mike!
Unbelievable !! This Guy is Goooooooood....

Could you suggest from which video I should start to learning Power BI?
excellent sir !! This is very simple and easy to understand !!
Insightful, and interesting from start until the end!
Glad you like it, Althur!!!!
