I became interested in Power BI 2 years ago but got bogged down at work. Thanks to that introduction, I recognized that it was time to start using Power BI if I didn't want to become totally mired in the large datasets that I've started using where VLOOKUPS can take upwards of 10 minutes and more! Your simple, straightforward but comprehensive introduction, helped me to quickly get back up to speed and I look forward to the following videos to get me started on my way. Thanks so much!
Mike mentions something very very important at 4:53 and that is that we excel users usually don't think about defining the type of data we have in our columns. However, in a Mr Excel post a few months back he encountered a rather interesting problem. He couldn't get the Insight tool in Excel 2019 to work on his 10-year-old data set. The Microsoft experts eventually discovered that a record in one of his data fields/columns was actually formatted as a date even though it was all text in the column. This caused the Insight tool to not analyse his data set. To Mr Excel's surprise, he'd been using the file like that for years and never noticed. Behold, when I tried the tool on my own large dataset, I too had the same problem. With the exception of the date column, I converted all other columns to general then Insight worked like a dream.

First off, I love your content! It is well organized, easy to follow, and has been a great resource for me. There is one thing that needs a correction though... a field is not a column. A field is where a column and a row (or record) intersect. Therefore, a record can have multiple fields. But each field is specific to that record. Thanks for all your hard work. I enjoy and appreciate it!
And yesss..... I saw marco and alberto mentioned in the video.... DAXXXXXX..... what a beautiful language it is... May be Alberto and Marco are best in coding DAX........ But surely Mike is the BEST in teaching DAX and anything
Professor Mike, a very nice summary of a lot of useful jargons that are used in the DW/BI area. I love the examples and the clear way they were organized and explained. I also loved your definition of BI "convert data into useful/actionable/refreshable information" - i have been using Actionable only so far - I am gonna add Refreshable also into my vocabulary as I get what you mean :) . I also liked the way you labeled Dimension table attributes as "attributes for Filtering" - beautiful as a typical business user would be able to relate to these label easily :) I also emphasize in my classes proper naming, understanding the grain/LoD of the data set before we start dragging and dropping. For many-to-many, the example I use is Budget vs Actual as that is something everyone understands and it is the classic usecase for M2M. I felt your example of invoices-to-orders was a bit of a stretch. The way I explain the difference between Relational DB model vs Reporting model is that Relational DB is optimized for faster writing (write it once, write it fast) and reporting models are optimized for faster reading (it is ok to duplicate data to speed up reading times). Overall a great video with awesome notes - I am going to use your video as a reference to share it with new people in this field.
Thank you for you awesome comment : ) : ) Refreshable is definitely a key to a successful solution. I think you are right about MtoM : Budget to Actual is a GREAT example. I have an example of that but much later in this ongoing class. I love this idea: Relational DB = One and Only One Place for source Data (write it once, write it fast) and Reporting Model = Fast Query (Dup Data Okay if it speeds query). Thanks for your support and thanks for sharing these videos!!!! Go team!!!!!
the best as usual...... Appreciate your efforts.... please more on Dax....please share course only for DAX .... there is a lot on RUclips but not same your way

ExcelIsFun I know I’m tellin’, big time. And there’s interested people, too. Some of which are professionals moving into Power BI. I’ll be “showing off” my first steps in PP and data models (I mentioned before) later this week... Only disadvantage: the local lingo is Dutch (Flemish variant) and most (but not all) users use the Dutch interface language. Following educational videos in English is not evident because everything gets translated (most unfortunately). But still, I keep voicing my admiration for this wonderful, state-of-the-art RUclips channel “ExcelisFun”... (usually gets people laughing at this point) - sounds a bit neerdy, but it gets their attention. And when they see what I can do, after a while it’ll get them thinking...
PowerToolsIsFUN. Great stuff as ever Mike. Many analysts get bogged down in the technicalities of producing 100% accurate summaries, or having a perfect source and often lose sight of the fact that their work is to produce analysis that informs a business decision. The other thing that's often missed is the importance of timeliness in such cases. The perfect report is worthless if it is presented after the Decision Point has passed. I'm in the process of recording a video based on our Business Intelligence course here in UK. When it is uploaded I'd be interested in your comments about any regional differences you notice from what you are teaching in USA. We often have particular issues like datetime formats where the data is from an overseas source i.e. Germany (SAP Databases) 24/06/2018 = 24.06.2018, USA = 06/24/2018. The "Locale" of the source data setting in Power BI Desktop saves loads of time sorting this out, otherwise I have to Split by delimiter, CONCATENATE and then get Date from resultant Text.. Another question: I spend a large amount of time generating random data sets to use for training. Is it the same for you? Keep up the FUN and thanks as ever.
Thanks for these REALLY important points, Oakley: 1) Result informs business decision, 2) Timeliness to match decision point, 3) Locale setting for different dates (I never use this because I almost always have USA dates). Yes: I create all my data sets (even the ones with millions of rows) with randomizing distribution sensitive formulas and it takes a HUGE amount of time to do. Thanks for your Fun, Teammate Oakley : )

Awesome!!! A new category of use for the videos: Remove Sunday Boredom. Thanks for the support. amrita : )
ExcelIsFun That sounds great, your voice is like coffee for some of us, generally videos related to tech stuff are boring but the way you present and speak triggers the brain, eg -“ welcome to this amaaaaaazing video on paaaaawer queerryy Heeyyyy iiiif you wannna download this file click on the link below the video and follow alooong” and “Daaaataaaaa” “oh my gawd this is amaaaazing (chuckles)” “ i am gonna go to paaaaawerrr pivot click on manaaage” etc, keep em coming and the good work!!
Yea, also equipped to surprise my analytics team on Monday :)
Mike I can't thank you enough for doing these videos. I'd like to buy you a beer sometime 🍻🍻👍
Not all of us know about MSPTDA. It is amazing Guy!
Well now you do! Have fun learning and tell all your friends so everyone knows about the great free education at the excelisfun channel at RUclips!! Thanks for your support, Huynh, with your comment, thumbs up and Sub : ) See you in the next MSPTDA!!!!
This is just awesome. The entire series is too good. ExcelIsFun has been the go to RUclips channel along with many other Excel learning resources to keep myself updated on the Excel and Data Analysis using Excel subject. Just love the way you teach. Mike Girvin, you are by far one of the best I have come across for Excel and in particular I love the part where you explain the concept of granularity in data analysis. Thanks a ton for all that you have done for the excel learning community. Keep going. Wish you a very happy and prosperous new year.
You are welcome, Awesh! I am glad that the material and course that I post can help you and the others in our Excel community!!! I get to thank you a lot too, because with the simple support of comments and thumbs ups on each video that you learn from from, you help promote the videos so more people can receive this free education. Go Team! See you in the next comment, Awesh : )
This is awesome!!! I'm studying for DAX/BI Excel exams. I have a lot of Excel experience, but THANK YOU for bringing it all together in "laments terms" :)
You are welcome, Stacey!!! The full MSPTDA class is here: ruclips.net/video/9IT8GdUktJ4/видео.html
Amazed of your endless knowledge and you wonderful way of teaching. It is amazing how much you produce and share for free (apart from the likes and comments that you ask for :) )
Yes, I do charge a comment and thumbs up for each video that viewers learn from. This is to help that Google algorithm rank the videos higher to the "free" education can reach even more people : ) Thanks for watching, learning and helping with support, 1877Pegasus : ) : ) : ) : )
Great videos. Thank you.
You are welcome!!!
Thank You Teacher.
You are welcome!!!
Thank you Mike
I'm following your page from Iran
Excel is fun :)
Glad Excel is fun for you! Thanks for following from Iran and thanks for the support with your comment, Thumbs Up and Sub : )
This stuff is pure gold.
Glad you like it, Eric!!!
Mike, you have explained this so well. It will be easy to follow the steps to come. Looking forward to the next video.
Glad you are looking froward to the videos to come! Thanks for your support, Matt!!!
And yesss..... I saw marco and alberto mentioned in the video.... DAXXXXXX..... what a beautiful language it is...
May be Alberto and Marco are best in coding DAX........ But surely Mike is the BEST in teaching DAX and anything
Without a doubt, Marco Russo and Alberto Ferrari are THE best with DAX!!!!!
Thank you very much sir. As usual Guru at his best
You are welcome so much!!! Thanks for the support, Muthukumar, with your comments, Thumbs Ups and Sub : )
Amazing!!! Fantastically clear and simple.
Thanks Mike for your incredible teaching style (and extraordinary skills) :-)))
Thank you, Teammate Bill Szysz!!!! I could not do it if I was not on an awesome Team with you : )
Thanks for the great video
Happy to provide the vids : )
Hey Mike. Thank you thank you for such helpful videos for sooooo many years.
You are welcome for the so many years, Fitzroy!!!!
I also liked the way you labeled Dimension table attributes as "attributes for Filtering" - beautiful as a typical business user would be able to relate to these label easily :)
I also emphasize in my classes proper naming, understanding the grain/LoD of the data set before we start dragging and dropping.
Thank you for you awesome comment : ) : )
Refreshable is definitely a key to a successful solution.
Impressive!, was very kind of you to share such information and knowledge! - Thanks
Great explanation video. Always refreshing to listen to Mike make the hard stuff easy and finally you are like now i get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 👍👍

This should be the most crucial part and I love it so much. I think everybody who would like to be proficient in Power Tools should start from this video. I wish to learn something like this when I started (but there was none). Finally, you are the one who made it happen!
Thanks a lot.
P.S. May I share this video to my facebook fanpage. I think there should be more Thai people to know this video.

Glad it all helps : )
Great overview...wish something like this was available when I was starting out :-)
Thanks, Teammate Doug! I wish there was something for me too when I was starting out, but there wasn't so I had to make it : )
Me too. Although, over the many years me learning this on my own, I may not have learned as well without all the time spent failing through trial and error. I love seeing what took me 20 years to understand shown in such a well structured method. Great job, Mike! I can't wait to send this to my coworkers and tell them, "See!, I told you so." haha
And I am glad you did :)
Yeah... me too :)
Before this series is over you may hit 500k subs!
Here’s us regulars rooting for you to reach that milestone. :-)
Thanks, Geert!!! That would be awesome! The more Online Excel Teammates the better and more fun it will be : ) If everyone already on the Team tell all their friends it will happen quickly : )
Thank you so much for being such a great Teammate! It is great to be on the Team with you : )
Thank you, Mike!
Your explanations are so clear and useful!
You are welcome, Ivan!! Thanks for the support : )
Very good 👍👍
Glad you like it!!!
You are a magician Mike, simply amazing. EXCELlent video as always.
