Earlier this season Southampton sat at the top of the Premier League, for the first time ever. Ralph Hasenhuttl has created a team with a clearly designed set of principles who are now playing excellent football.
But is it all high pressing and energetic football, Alex Stewart suggests not.

Of course Southampton is a patient team. Any other team would've fired their manager if they sat on 18th till November and lost 9-0. They kept faith and are getting rewards

They even restructured their club to have a B team similar to German clubs. Allowing them to train their younger players the same as the senior squad. So given the Southampton Academy's reputation, it bodes well for the future - especially under the initial guidance of a German coach such as Ralph Hasenhuttl.

@@edmann1820 It is similar because they will mimic the first teams training and tactics. Love love love this video, only thing missing was maybe a higher emphasis on the long balls, in recent weeks saints have shifted much more closely to the long balls with ings being injured, and he’s much less crucial to the outfit as he was before. Also the overloading in midfield with essentially 3 central midfielders and their extremely high second ball win rate. And the versatility of james ward prowse as well, his surging runs through the middle opened up by the possession in their own half when they play directly and how he covers, the reference to niggling fouls as well is arguably more crucial than anything Southampton do as a team as it contributes to the winning back of possession as well as ward prowse constantly covering

I was thinking on the same lines. We know that Saints win most of the balls in the midfield, but they back pass and start moving the ball from the backline to front. This maybe the case because Romeu offers the best ball possession/calm approach when they retain ball, which gives proves effective when they have possession. But now with Diallo, I feel that once he steps in the team, Saints won't start do the build up from the back, but they will rapidly will balls and instigate more frequent attacks without making any back pass. This will make them quick af(possibility)

One thing that can be added is how Southampton disrupts opposition's possession right from the start of their build up. They don't allow teams to make 3rd or 4th successful passes, thus by winning balls mostly into midfield (by jwp and romeu) and then instigating attack. But now with the addition of Ibrahima Diallo in the midfield, they can speed up the number of attacks by counterpressing faster. PS Romeu is equally amazing:)

Hey Tifo, you should do a podcast about Ralph Ragnick, he’s a great coach, has turned into Red Bull’s teams into juggernauts, he’s proven if given couple years, he can build a team, he’s a free agent yet yet NO ONE is talking about him or trying to hire him. Personally I would love him at Borrusia Dortmund, but I think he would do great in England, if he went to a club where he would be given total control and money to invest in academy, he seems like a perfect match for an ambitious foreign owner, especially American one that doesn’t understand the game, I think he would be a match made in heaven for a team and owner like Fulham and Shahid Khan

The lockdown has been a godsend for Saints. I was at St Marys in Feb and the crowd were really on their backs, home crowds don't really like this system if the team isn't winning. Saints are also a team of runners, it is unbelievable how much running some of them do. It is also interesting how much Walker-Peters has improved Saints, he is brilliant at getting out of tight spots. Very good with the ball. Saints still hold the record for most points lost from winning positions though and the home form has to improve so there is still work to do!

I confess I have not watched the team enough to form a strong opinion, but... The tactics have the whiff of a side that can upset big clubs, but will have trouble getting consistent results against lower table teams that are content to sit in a low block and counter. Overloading the box with four players on the attack means there are huge gaps in the midfield the opposition can rapidly progress the ball through on the counter, if they get a fortunate bounce with the clearance.

From Southampton lost 0-9 last season, I've been interested in how they'd respond. I've seen some of these same things, and they've certainly come around. Great job, Tifo!

What went wrong? Look at them since the new year - barely won a game and lost 9-0 to Man U.

Looking back, they had a massive injury count and a lack of good back-up options. Despite losing Danny Ings, I feel this season they'll be better with more players that can act as injury cover. The only issue I see is that McCarthy's goal keeping has regressed a lot since Southampton were at the top of the league late 2020 and the quality of teams this year is higher than last year IMO.
