This is not new. I remember Brendan Rodgers using similar tactics for a short period of time in 14/15 season with Liverpool using Can as the Overlapping CB and he was kind of our creative outlet.

It hit me that they played Lukas Klostermann, usually a right wing back, as the right centre back of the 3 and him regularly entering the opposing penalty area with runs from deep, even creating chances for himself to score. I thought that it's not uncommon to have a centreback make a run into the box once or twice a game for a chance, but it happened time and time again so it couldn't be a coincidence. A genius innovation by the brilliant Julian Nagelsmann I thought, as I hadn't seen something quite like it before. It seems Sheffield has found success doing something similar. If RB Leipzig keep doing it and Sheffield are having success with it, overlapping centrebacks could become a trend in the new decade of football, and I'm really excited for it as it turns dull 5-back formations into real fluid, positive attacking football! I think Cruijff used attacking wide centre backs in a 3-4-3 sometimes at Barcelona. I watched a video of him describing how it caused opposition forwards to track them, reducing the threat the forwards could cause by being further from the Barca goal.
I think a misconception with sheffield united is that they play crap, defensive football where they grind out matches. But this perfectly interprets how innovative and attractive there are to watch. Watching them play in europe would be fascinating

Dean Henderson hasn't just been the league's best English keeper this season, he's been the league's best keeper. Can't name a keeper other than him with either his save range, reliability or comfortability to a team like Sheffield United, which (taking NOTHING away they've been superb) are not physically the best team in the league. No doubt Henderson has been a cut above the rest this season.
That is not true, he has had a couple of errors this season like Liverpool game, Chelsea and Watford to name a few. My vote would be Wilder all day. No disrespect intended to Sheffield, but the fact that he has got a poor quality side playing such high quality football is a testament to his tactical and man management approach. Playing a system that gets the most out of the players while also getting the players to get the most out of the system sounds easy, but in truth it takes good coaching, good tactical analysis, a good recruitment policy and good man management. Arguably quite rightly Klopp will likely be tipped as manager of the season for his impressive title win, but for me the step up isn't that much greater than last season. My vote would be Wilder all day. No disrespect intended to Sheffield, but the fact that he has got a poor quality side playing such high quality football is a testament to his tactical and man management approach. Playing a system that gets the most out of the players while also getting the players to get the most out of the system sounds easy, but in truth it takes good coaching, good tactical analysis, a good recruitment policy and good man management. Rarely do those things come together, especially at a club of more limited resources like SUFC. Credit to them and credit to Wilder

It's to their credit that they're playing at the level we have seen, and it's to the credit of Wilder that he's seen more in them that just players not good enough for other sides. But let's be clear, most of these lads hadn't been gathering interest from the top clubs in England

well... he's not wrong... sheff united are a defensive hard working team who get men behind the ball against good teams and counter. or against lesser sides they overload a bit more. but yeah, its not like they're gegenpress or anything like that, but a good side nonetheless...

At the end of the season they statistically have the fourth best defense while Man U man city and Liverpool have world class defenders and defensive midfielders and Sheffield has nothing close. Tactical genius
Bielsa's Chile played like this, with overlapping centerbacks. See Fabian Orellana's goal against Argentina in 2008, where Gary Medel (right center back) ran to the touchline after overlapping on the right side and assisted Orellana to score for the first and only official win that Chile has ever got on 90 mins against Argentina.

As the other commenter mentioned, when Sheffield United played Leeds Bielsa said that he had attempted it but was unsuccessful, and was impressed at how Wilder had managed to make the system work when he himself couldn't. Bielsa also said that Wilder was the only manager doing things he'd never seen before, and that he had learnt the most by watching Wilder than any other manager during his time in England.

No. That's not how this style of play works. For this to work, you need fighters. Irish, Norwegian, Yorkshiremen. Not a lad who will fall over when he's touched. It's not about the quality of the player as much as the system.
