Hello Molly. I think if your intuition tells you that instagram is not serving you, you made the right decision to stop using it. I myself (I'm 46) was never interested in social media, I saw no use for me. I only use youtube and love it, it gives me joy and a good feeling and I think everybody has the right to decide what kind of social media to use or not to use. Loved your little hike at the beginning of this video. Lovely pictures. Best wishes ❤

Congratulations on that decision. I know it must have been hard after investing so much time and effort into Instagram but as Marie Kondo suggests: If it does not spark joy anymore, it is time to let go of it.
I have watched all your videos so far and hope you will continue to make content here. I thoroughly enjoy your lovely and lively personality and I am really looking forward to watching new videos from you every week as it feels like a short holiday in my beloved Scotland. So thanks a lot for that. All the best from Germany

Well done. I only watch RUclips for things I’m interested in. I hardly ever watch TV now so I don’t feel too guilty about watching RUclips. I moved to Scotland last year so it’s lovely to see all the places I want to explore. Good luck with your writing journey 😊

This is so timely...I logged out of Instagram and deleted the app from my phone this weekend, I don't post on there, just, well 'scroll' which to be honest is so addictive and just a waste of precious time....I don't understand the reels thing and wasn't enjoying it. Also, there is far too much advertising. I came off Facebook last November and haven't missed it at all....except, I reactivated my account just to use Marketplace and have found myself falling down the scrolling rabbit hole again, so it has to go. You must do what brings you joy. I would much rather watch a lovely vlog on RUclips. Thank you for being so honest, I think a lot of people are moving away from social media xx

I’m with you on that decision. I’ve stopped creating on Instagram maybe 4 months ago after years and years of work and cultivating. The sheer mountain of work to keep up with the algorithm is just too much. I just casually create on TikTok now for the joy of it & it’s been really freeing and fun. Thank you for sharing this! It’s a lovely conversation

I used to enjoy Instagram but it’s changed so much and instead of going on it to find some quiet, peaceful time and enjoy the content (photos) of like minded people it became noisy constantly moving reels. I first started muting the sound but still found the incessant reels so overwhelming in a way and then so many Insta accounts popping up that were not aligned with my interests or values and sadly the accounts I once loved got buried and lost in this content vomit dare I say it. It certainly didn’t provide the peaceful happy moments of respite any longer. So yes … I too have bid Instagram farewell and feel all the better for it. I look forward to your uploads … quality over Insta’s quantity content and beautiful and inspiring videos🥰

Unfortunately this platform is the Big Brother himself, i.e. it belongs to the biggest search engine which knows more about its users then they themselves 😉 but anyway, many of the artists provide so much beautiful inspiration that I like it too.

Brilliant decision. Essentialism. We each have only so much time and energy to give each day. Finding the key fewer endeavors which give us the most joy and sense of purpose is the way to a sustainable happy life. I'm happy for you. With regard to book writing, I've written ten novels (pen names; I prefer anonymity in that for now). I can tell you it's hard, but worth the effort. And each successive one is a little easier to write than the last. But, perhaps most importantly, writing a novel is a fantastic way to learn more about yourself and what other people are going through in life too.

Hello! For the first weeks of summer break (I‘m a teacher) I have not been on instagram and I realised that it gives me a different conception of time… when I am on it I always feel rushed and that I dont have time … when I was not on it, i realised that there is actually a lot of time in the day to do things.. so I‘m also considering to stop using it. Best wishes from Austria 👋🏻

Hiya, Giving up social media is wonderful but takes some determination to succeed considering the fact that so many media outlets and businesses use it to promote themselves. Simple tasks like checking out info for a shop or hotel now often only uses social media, even communicating with energy companies. I do know the power of social media with regard to positivity regarding communication and campaigning etc but am only too aware of the negative stuff that appears continually. RUclips is my current addiction and I am even considering weaning myself of that but I'm here for now. Anyway your channel is an absolute joy but I have also seen the pressure RUclipsrs have to get content as its all about likes, views etc. So take it easy.

I’ve decided to do the same a few days ago. I’d only use it for personal use but as you said my handling wasn’t mindful. I would find myself in the app scrolling and scrolling and like you, I had tried boundaries. Yet, they didn’t work.
Now that I’m off it’s surprising really how much more time you have. I kind of lost track of time when I was on it. Also, my view of my body changed as I was constantly seeing people ‘better’ than me and I was, though unwillingly, comparing myself to them. And it made me feel bad about myself for absolutely no reason.
So, Great choice from my point of view.
Keep up the great content 😍

Hi Molly, I completely get how social media can take over your life. I left Twitter several years ago, Instagram never really intrigued me. I might check Facebook once a week just for my DYI groups. But I enjoy RUclips as I can pick and choose what I want to watch. I am super thrilled about your newsletter and reading your writings. Your video today was inspiring once again on living a slow life and enjoying every moment. I look forward each week to seeing what you share with us. Have a wonderful week!

I have been sitting on the fence trying to decide whether to come off instagram for a while. I struggle with getting addicted and mindlessly scrolling, but there are also some people that truly inspire me and I feel so creative after viewing their content. Lots of people seem to be going down the newsletter route, I have signed up for a few, and I do love the long form of writing. I have recently tried to launch a writers instagram page as I have just finished writing my first book, but I honestly find it exhausting and I'm seeing little growth, and I really dislike reels!! I keep thinking I should try and go down the website/blog route but honestly don't know.
Love your videos and have just signed up for your newsletter, looking forward to reading it :)

What a great decision! As a reader rather than a content creator, I’ve been excited that several accounts I follow and enjoy have recently started (or restarted) newsletters due to the algorithms making creative decisions that don’t align with the writers’ goals. I love that each week or so I get a deliciously written letter right in my inbox (no blog to hunt for) giving me interesting content directed to me by the writer with no middle man. Simple and brilliant! Well done and I cannot wait!🤗

Hi Hippy Highlander, YT just recommended your channel, I don't know why, but I'm so glad! For me instagram is an extension of my personal journalling. For my use it has absolutely nothing to do with getting customers and making money. Most of what I think and write in my physical journal stays private. But once in a while there is something I'd like to creatively share. Instagram provides a creative framework for doing that.

I have never really gotten into social media other than RUclips. I initially got involved because of my kids and a retail website I had but abandoned Facebook many years ago and am so confused by Instagram that I never really posted. I'm glad to learn that I am not really missing an opportunity with that. The amount of time social media takes does not keep up connected but rather leaves us little time for meaningful relationships. Thanks for sharing this decision and good luck with your writing. I look forward to your newsletter.

I'm thiiiiiiiiiiis close to dropping a few social media accounts as well. I know I spend WAY too much time on them, but it's also where I connect with a lot of far flung family and friends. So, at this point I check in with myself every few months or so, to see if what and who I'm following still resonates with me. If I find myself skipping or scrolling over their posts or stories more often then not, I have no trouble unfollowing them and moving on.

Great video Molly and such wonderful views!
I think a lot of people, definitely me included are becoming fed up of instagram. Making content for contents sake. And people you follow and want to engage with get lost in the crazy algorithms. It’s also a lot of people just in it to see what free stuff they can get sent. A lot of fakeness. Which I’m sure youtube also has, but it’s much easier to filter that out I’ve found.

Hi Molly, thanks for making such lovely videos. I recognize myself in so much of the things you talk about. I really like how you approached this 'problem' of instagram and made the decision to stop and I feel this could be helpful for myself too, but I also like sharing photo's of my vegetable garden, drawings, etc. and I have a little blog where I sometimes write but the only reason people find them and read them is bc I share them on instagram. Of course the power is in the sharing, and not so much in the number of people that see it (although it feels a bit sad if noone would ever read my blog again :)). I do wonder about your experiences with you tube, how was it to start with this and did (and do you still) use just a normal phone to shoot the videos or a more fancy video camera? I love the idea of substack and just subscribed to yours, but being Dutch and only having people in my acquentaince reading my blogs, it feels a bit strange to switch to English, although it would mean a broader audience. Sorry for rambling on :) warm wishes 🌻 Meike
