I have taken an Alaskan cruise on this same ship, nice to see it again with some of the same destinations I visited as well. All the employees kept saying this particular ship is one of the best built in the industry. Indicating, it was a true tank that was super tight from water. This was a relief, since we had turbulent waters on one day of the journey. We also had the most senior captain in the company, that says something about the ship as well. Enjoyed the video, thank you!

I had to go back to the beginning because I missed how the initial fare went from $240 to $559. It’s so deceiving, even feels borderline duplicitous, that taxes, fees, etc., are more than the actual fare. Definitely something unseasoned cruise seekers should be warned about.

In the 6 months of following Royal Caribbean Blog, this has to be one of the best videos I’ve seen! I wish there was an option to hit “love” and not just “like” on RUclips.
Jenna, it was so good to see the video of this trip after having read the blog. You and I have discussed Alaska on the message board, and I finally made a decision to go with Ovation next May. I just hope it won’t feel too crowded and there is enough scenic views from inside. It will be very interesting to compare a quantum class ship to an oasis class, which I will be going on (Harmony) in about 50 days, for the first time.
Looking at the Alaska scenery at home is just breathtaking! I can only imagine what it’s going to be like when I go there in person. Thank you Matt and Jenna for posting this awesome video!!

@@jennadelaurentis4399 Just an update, it is now exactly 1 year later after taking Ovation to Alaska and WOW, what an amazing experience! Sailing was the 8 day inaugural from Vancouver to Seattle May 11th to May 19th 2023. And here I am still dreaming about Alaska and looking at videos. 3 weeks after this cruise I was day dreaming at work about the whole experience. I can't wait to go back!
Ovation was fine, we had a virtual balcony inside stateroom. I'm glad we saved money by not booking a balcony and used it towards a dog sled/helicopter excursion in Skagway, whale watching in Juneau, and White Rail Pass also in Skagway. Fortress of the Bear and the Raptor center in Sitka were enjoyable too. Next time I might try Radiance for the scenic views around the ship. I can go on and on, but one last thing, with the exception of a little rain in Sitka, we had AMAZING weather! It hit 78 degrees in Ketchikan and the restaurant staff at the Alaska Fish House were not happy about the heat...haha! This cruise was certainly (out of 10 cruises) my absolute favorite! Seeing Alaska, two days prior in Vancouver and ending in Seattle, all places I had never been to, were all fantastic! Thanks to you and Matt for helping us enjoy a smooth cruise. Btw, worst part of the cruise, boarding at Canada Place in VC...AWFUL!!!!

This was such a fun video for me. I actually was on Radiance of the Seas for a Canadian cruise 20 years ago this month when I was just a kid and it was a much newer ship. It was nostalgic to see the interior again. As a preteen I absolutely loved the kids program and had a ton of fun with them. And I climbed to the top of that rock wall. It was wild being over 10 stories above the water.

OMG! I was on that actual cruise, Jenna! You'd probably saw me. I was the tallest guy on the ship XD I hate to tell you this, but you were probably in town in Icy Strait. But right before the rain hit around Noonish. A pod of humpacks actually came near shore in front of the Orca Statue. One even breached to eat. I got a quick picture right as it closed it's mouth and started back into the water. It was amazing. I also did a back to back and I can tell everyone that it doesn't matter when you go, you never know what you'd expect. On the way back the waters were even worse between Skagway and Seward. But the rest of the trip was just all semi clear skies. We even got to see the Northern Lights. Saw so many whales as well.

    Great video, Jenna!
Alaska is one of my favourite cruising destinations, but it's not for everyone. If you're into warm holidays, partying and beaches... Alaska may not be for you. But we love it.
I actually think you did Alaska the best way possible - a one-way cruise allows you to tour inland Alaska as well and check out Denali National Park. And you spend more time cruising in Alaska, while a round trip cruise wastes time getting to and from Alaska.
IMO the smaller ships are best suited to Alaska as the destination is the attraction. I would also argue that a balcony is not so necessary, I much prefer viewing the scenery on deck or the promenade as you then have more flexibility on which side you view from.
We cruised Alaska in 2007 and 2017... and looking forward to our next trip in 2027!

    • @jennadelaurentis4399
      @jennadelaurentis4399 2 года назад +2

Been there, done that. My Alaska cruise from Vancouver to Anchorage was similar, but I did more while in port (Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway). The two days the boat cruised to those glaciers before ending in Anchorage had clear weather for me. I'm not sure I'll do a similar cruise again. I'm not a big fan of cruising, but if you want to see some of Alaska, doing a cruise is the most efficient way of doing it.

Your video was very clear and concise. We too booked the cheapest room just because I knew our flights from the east coast were going to be more than the cruise. I sadly have to say that Alaska was my least favorite vacation. Plus we found embarkation to be the most chaotic and it was our worse one yet, with no guides from the people were having to go in circles. Many passengers were getting upset from the lack of direction. The only highlight from our cruise was we got to meet up with friends.
    Thanks for the video

We were on the June 26 cruise on the Serenade of the Seas. So from the parking garage the line for the elevator was too long so someone came along and told everyone waiting to just take the stairs. Well the stairs took you past the floor we needed to be because the door was locked. So we get in a line and workers were asking what color ticket everyone had, well none of the people that took the stairs had color tickets. We all had to go back around and find the actual check in area. While we were headed back to the first line we were in, they were telling more people to go back and get your check in ticket. All this would have been avoided if door had been unlocked or someone waiting near the stair door to tell everyone where to go. It was very stressful. It was just chaos and we have never had any issues from FL. Also we we lucky that our taxi driver knew to drop us off down stairs to give our luggage to the porters. We saw people carrying bags and trying to find out where to drop their bags because they came in from the wrong floor. Really just a mess. We said we would never go back

The train includes guided commentary and photo stops and the coach class is good with access to the viewing car a bonus. So my first time to Alaska was on a cruise and I remember my wife being upset because she wanted to see a whale and literally not 5 seconds afterwards one breached the water in front of the window of the restaurant we are in.

Thank you for this review! I've been to Alaska 3 times and want to return. My preference: a cabin with a window, not a balcony. At Icy Strait Point, there is a 6-lane zip line that I'd love to do. But my main reason for returning is to see Denali.

Very well done video. I have cruised Royal Caribbean but I am not a fan of their mostly big ships. I have wanted to cruise on the Radiance ever since I had seen the video of it being expanded years ago. I have done the route you took many times and always enjoy going to Sitka, Skagway and Icy Strait. I will be seeing them again next year.

It is much cheaper to go on the state ferries, the Alaska Marine Highway. The same beautiful scenery on a spartan, but comfortable ship.

Just wanted to add that spending money at the ports away from the ship is a huge boost for the local economy.

    Great video.
We are taking a friend on her first cruise, and it will be to Alaska! ( August or September? 2024 )
Currently, we are trying to decide which of the RCI or CCL ships/itineraries to take.
It would be very helpful if the other cruise mentioned in this video was linked to this page.
    Thanks so much.

The other cruise I took was on Ovation of the Seas with Royal Caribbean! Both have pros and cons. Ovation is bigger and has more to do, but the smaller ships often visit more ports and have a more relaxing vibe.

I would recommend Celebrity Millennium round trip Vancouver-Alaska-Vancouver. From this video I am guessing the food in the buffet and main dining on Celebrity are superior

Last minute, and I mean LAST minute last June, I snagged a guaranteed, inside room on Celebrity Millennium, 7 nights in Alaska, Vancouver to Steward for $$225 + tax, pp. I doubt it will happen again, but it was a very pleasant, very unexpected week.

Hah, I booked a 7 night cruise to alaska from vancouver- because I live in Vancouver I decided to do a round route where it leaves and ends in Vancouver and not fly back. Whelp, that took it to $806 per person for an inside room traveling at the end of September (I'm absolutely ok with grey skies and rain). Without any packages, excusions, and given no on board credit, and after paying for gratuity, fees and taxes, it came to $2500 for husband and I. They hike the price on trips that end in the same port it seems?

@14:03, i disagree about spending on stuff when you go on shore especially in Alaska. Everything is waaaay over priced, it's a tourist trap. It's not like docking at other destinations like Barcelona Roma NY etc where you can go into the city and eat and buy things like a local at local prices
Eat on the ship and buy your over priced souvernirs online, as they are all made in china for a few $$$

So budget about $3000 for any cheap Alaskan cruise regardless of the price highlighted. This seems to be some idea cruise for bookworms and people who have time. So if you want to travel to Alaska and are in no hurry to get there, and you enjoy reading 17 books in one day while drinking, ...Radiance is your ship.

Hi. Thanks for the video! You answered a bunch of questions as we’re going on this exact cruise this coming august. I’ve been doing a lot of internet searches and still have a few questions if it’s ok with you answer through here. But my main one revolves around port excisions. How much time do you have when you make port? It seems like you only get 4-5 hours per port visit which pretty much makes you book the ship excisions to make sure you make it back. I appreciate the video very much and if there’s a better medium to contact you to ask you more questions please let me know!!
