Survive is the song that made me fall in love with this musical. You can close your eyes- and see everything- it’s like you’re actually there. The story is happening in real time right in front of you- and the action is driving everything. I mean to put it simply- never has a boss fight been conveyed through pure music- and yet this utter visionary found a way. It’s the song that truly shows you that Epic is something else.

I hadn't heard that "electric bagpipe" or whatever it is. That's..... epic! (ba dum dum tish) I won't blame you for missing the major death and being thoroughly distracted by those foreboding double basses. You're a bass singer after all. Of course you focus on the low parts. I really do hope you can get Jay on. I'm sure he's busy as heck, but he also loves to interact with his fans, and I'm sure he'd love to nerd out with a professional singer. Your interviews are always amazing and leave me inspired.
To be fair, a year and a half ago, when it was first released, there weren’t as many animatics floating around, so many of us ONLY listened to the audio, which was rather vague until the release of the Ocean Saga, particularly if you flinched away from using TikTok for Behind the Scenes. I had to be TOLD by a friend months later that Polites was the first to die, particularly because he’s named in the Odyssey as being present on Circe’s island.
Honestly, the fact that you didn’t get distracted by the character moment and honed in on the music did give some great insight! The musical intention and meaning is definitely a blind spot for me despite being a fan of Epic already, so it’s nice to have your thoughts!

Love the reaction and breakdown, just so you know, there are now newer versions of the Troy and Cyclopes Saga as sadly Jay was screwed over by his previous producers (he now self-producers) and receives no money from the first versions. Not sure if you may do a comparison or switch but thought I'd mention so you know :)
I may not understand any of the terms, but I do feel like I've learned something new from every video, even if I don't know what exactly I learned. You're one of the few people I can enjoy learning from while watching their reactions.
I highly recommend listening to the rereleases of the albums. Jorge wasn't receiving royalties from the company he was working with before so he did new recordings that have much cleaner and rounder sounds/vocals. The new recording of the Polyphemus album is phenomenal.

Listening to this review just had me recognizing that the beginning theme of this song echoes the tune from the god (Zeus?) in The Horse and the Infant. "That is who we're fighting" "I don't think you're ready" Gives this moment a hint of prophecy and destiny in the musical storyline! I love how much depth there is to this whole score!!! ❤❤

This song has such _PERFECT_ audio-storytelling, even if you just Listen to it (which is how I first experienced all of Act 1) you know _Exactly_ what's happening. Odysseus rallying his men, the battle, the TURN, & Odysseus going into shock/freezing at the end. Polites dies & we do not hear a SINGLE note from Odysseus for a rest of the song (a full minute!) We can hear Polyphemus laying waste to his men, his men _begging_ for direction/help/some other clever plan from their captain, but we do not hear from Odysseus again. The same cannot be said (unfortunately) for some other songs (such as songs in the Circe Saga, or the Thunder Saga) I've seen (and personally know) SO many people who are unsure of what exactly is happening in like half the songs in the Thunder Saga, but Survive does NOT have that issue I love this song so much
I would KILL to have an official release of instrumentals for this song (for the whole of epic for that matter), but THIS SONG!!!! Love the vocals, but just listening to the music alone… The pure music and storytelling in this song puts it in my Top 5

I view the switch from a lot of melodic content to very little representing Odysseus using his wits to handle Polyphemus, but then having to resort to violence.
