Lore-wise, it can be inferred that Dark Nebula is strongest when controlling a host. And it's just so weak without controlling someone that its priority will be to flee to space. Similar to how other Dark Matter behaves but weaker. This could be how Meta Knight or Dedede were able to capture it in the chest the first time while acknowledging how much of a threat it truly is. As a fight it is VERY underwhelming... I'm just trying to cope here-

Honestly, to me it feels like Daroach was supposed to be the final boss, but either by last minute HAL requirements or a crunched time schedule, they had to just throw Nebula's boss fight in at the last minute, reusing a few animation (Like I'm pretty sure for the Ice ability they just straight ripped it from Kracko), and buffed the Triple Star to hilarious levels to try and make the fight go quickly so nobody notices before shipping.

One of the most unfortunate things about dark nebula, in my opinion, is the fact that it ruined a good portion of people's impressions of Squeak Squad. A finale is supposed to be a memorable climax that will cement your positive memories of the game, so Dark Nebula being such a disappointing final boss coming after the difficult yet fun Dark Daroach really hurts, especially when compared to the otherwise stellar final boss roster. -Dark Crafter does not exist Claycia was the real final boss-
Squeak Squad is a really solid Kirby game with many neat ideas (especially the elemental gimmicks), and some cool references to other Kirby games (and even the anime!), so seeing many trash on it due to Dark Nebula is really unfortunate. As you said in the video - "It's a real shame".

I just noticed most movement patterns do combo with their element:
-Fire moves erratically in the air because the flames force you to fly.
-Thunder moves around the screen because the spark cage makes you stay around the center (screen corners apart).
    -And you mentioned ice already.
This fight could be cool if Dark Nebula did something like:
Elemental attack (faster and flames/sparks last longer) -> Movement -> Small star attack -> Switch element and repeat.
Squeak Squad was my first Kirby game, Daroach is amazing but Dark Nebula really is more forgettable than the sequence leading up to his battle.

  • @avanelletheclockfriend2515
    @avanelletheclockfriend2515 Год назад +8

I feel like the only really good thing to come out of Dark Nebula is just the memes. Whether it be the connections to Dark Matter/Zero established in a Japanese art book(and the fact that they’re called Dark Zero in Japanese) getting turned into things like “Dark Nebula is that guy nobody really likes and Zero regrets ever creating them” or “Dark Nebula is the prototype Miracle Matter but Zero just forgot about their existence and now they have a whole complex about it”. Also, good ol’ “Bill Cipher if he was incredibly weak but had the exact same personality and ambitions”. Alternatively, Dark Nebula is actually extremely powerful in-universe it’s just that Kirby was so fed up with all of the bullshit getting between him and his cake that he finally snapped and made them look weak by comparison.
I bet the Triple Star wasn’t even made to defeat them specifically in the same way you have the Star Rod and Nightmare, Love-Love Stick and Zero, Rainbow Sword and Dark Matter, etc. I bet it’s the same sort of deal Galaxia has of being an incredibly powerful legendary weapon but not made to combat a particular threat. Kirby using the Triple Star against Dark Nebula is just hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby.

Outside of extra modes, I wouldn't really call any Kirby final boss hard but what they lack in difficulty they make up for in spektical and presentation. I'd use a modern Kirby boss as an example but for the sake of fairness we can look at Dark Mind. Yeah I didn't have a major issue with that fight, but stuff like the attacks it had along with the cool arena make still make it intense and engaging. With Dark Nebula, the only intense thing is the music but that more makes me think "you don't really deserve this do you".

Having a Dark Matter boss that could have single-handedly endangered popstar, that previously would have required a specific type of special weapon to defeat, running from Kirby and forcing us to chase it down, not requiring Kirby to use any ability if not desired- I like the idea that Kirby has simply grown that much more powerful than in the Dark Matter trilogy.
Still sucks mechanically though, especially as the final boss. If it were me, I would have made that chase sequence into the final boss fight itself, kinda like some sonic bosses.

But yes, the fight has a lot of problems and it is sad to see that many of them had simple solutions that were not considered, although what gives me hope is that he is not forgotten by Hal, considering that he even has a mask in RTDLDX, who knows, hopefully it may be that he receives the same treatment that Dark Meta knight, Dark matter or Nightmare received, but only time will tell.

Although the video is about Dark Nebula, can we give the original Dark Matter fight in KDL2 a honorable mention because its the inverse of Dark Nebula? While the Dark Nebula fight is very easy and fast, the Dark Matter one has the opposite problem where it usually tends to drag on for way too long and also the sword doesn't work so well in defeating it because the only way to chip away large chunks of health is via using the orbiters or shadow balls against it.

honestly i want to see a Kirby game taking place in the Underworld. Maybe a prequel game with Meta Knight or Dedede as the main character showing how Nebula was sealed in Dedede's chest, or a sequel game with Kirby as the main character (like always)
man an Underworld game has so much potential, it could have Morpho Knight as a major antagonist since his Japanese description says he came from the Underworld, heck maybe even previously defeated villains like Nightmare or Sectonia showing up since y'know it's the Kirby version of hell!. It could also retroactively canonize the translation error since the Japanese version doesn't mention the Underworld, much like Super Star Ultra's "a Nova's" in Marx Soul's description

Aside from gameplay, I think another factor to Dark Nebula's underwhelming presentation is it's character design.
It's actually by no means a poor design. Despite only be a literal star its colour schene and the particle effects are actually pretty solid.
The problem is I don't think its worthy of being a final boss design in a Kirby game. Especially when you have an iconic one like Daroach prior. Some suggestions is that they can increased its size in a phase 2 or certain sections and add some more design features appear during the elemental attacks rather than "I'm blue now, dab ba de da ba die".
Additionally, for a supposed "god of the underworld" not much about DN's design conveys that. Necrodeus and Morpho Knight are definitely better examples of themes of the afterlife, with the motif and symbolism of the skull and butterfly respectively being very apparent.

Waddle Doo is an iconic round creature and distant relative of Waddle Dee, sharing many of that creature's characteristics, save for the single large eye in place of a face and the ability to fire beams from it. He is most commonly encountered in the Kirby series as an enemy, but he can be recruited as a helper in appropriate games and in some instances is playable aside from that. Waddle Doo attacks primarily by firing his aforementioned eye beam, but will otherwise harm Kirby by collision or by trying to body-slam him, as seen in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. Swallowing Waddle Doo will typically yield Kirby the Beam ability, and if holding a parasol, he will yield Kirby the Parasol ability.
Waddle Doo bears a very similar physique to Waddle Dee (and Kirby by extension), and can often be found in the same situations as his more down-to-earth cousins. If not distinguished by his eye, Waddle Doo also differs in his color scheme, bearing a more orange-red (described in Kirby's Dream Buffet as "ketchup") body hue with orange-yellow feet, as well as two strands of hair on his head. Given that Waddle Doo's face consists only of a single giant eye, he can only meaningfully communicate his emotions using eye-based expressions such as tears, dilation of his pupil, and movements of his eyelid. Despite this, Waddle Doo is capable of speaking, as evidenced in Kirby Battle Royale and Kirby: Right Back at Ya!.
Waddle Doo is often associated with the reoccurring Boss Kracko, who is able to conjure them in most of his appearances and also has a giant singular eye which can fire beams. Another form of Waddle Doo was created when Dark Matter possessed the Waddle Dee in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. Waddle Doo also has a much larger Mid-Boss cousin known as King Doo who appears in Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby: Planet Robobot, along with a few other titles.

You have to remember that dark nebula was dormant for so long in the chest that it wasn’t as powerful as it would’ve been, I really like to think that dark Daroach was the true final boss of the game and the fight against dark nebula is just him running away and soon realizing he can’t escape so he fought anyway and probably knew he was going to lose but tried to fight in his weaker state

I like that the suggestion for how to make Dark Nebula a better boss is basically “make it move and attack quicker and also give it a slightly simpler version of Miracle Matter’s gimmick”.
Don’t get me wrong, I like the Miracle Matter fight and its mechanic of “it stops being weak to certain ability elements after you’ve hit it with those ability elements enough times”, it’s a good boss to draw from. And it probably would’ve helped set the “insane lore” precedent that only began truly rearing its head with _Return to Dream Land._ But resorting to “make it a simpler version of a boss that already exists and has much cooler fight music” really just goes to show how much of a failure Dark Nebula is 😆

In light of the Return to Dreamland Remaster, I hope they do the same to this one day. Idk if it would be 3D like Forgotten Land or stick to its Original 2D fashion, but if there’s one thing I know from how they redid Magolor Soul, they’d definitely make Dark Nebula an absolute beast and add some much needed lore for it
Holding out that hood since this was my first ever Kirby game and it’s special to me

The Virgin Dark Nebula to the Chad Dark Star.
In all seriousness though, as much as Dark Nebula sucks and is super disappointing, I would love to see the modern Kirby dev team take another knack at this boss, a remake of you will.
Heck, I enjoyed my time with Squeak Squad. It was my first Kirby game too.
Imagine how cool it would be if Hal REMADE Kirby Squeak Squad nowadays. How much more character they could pack into each interaction with the Squeaks. That would be amazing.
I can’t even begin to imagine how cool Dark Nebula could be if they remade him! I just want the guy to share the coolness factor that other modern and old Kirby bosses have.
I want justice for Dark Nebula.

Dark nebula is so pathetic because it doesn’t try to fight Kirby. After beating dark daroach and nebula loses its host, it knows it can’t face Kirby head on, so it runs. It only fights with what it has when it’s backed into a corner.
Gameplay wise it still sucks though.

    Also every ganondorf fight.
In Ocarina of time the buildup is amazing and then you actually fight him and it’s famously just energy tennis.
Windwaker probably has the best fight out of them but it’s just Ganondorf swinging is sword slowly. It’s more cinematic and doesn’t even try to be difficult.
In Twilight princess there are three stages to the fight: first, energy tennis(again), then chase Ganondorf on horseback as he runs away (completely ruins any intimidating aura remaining after energy tennis, then it’s a sword fight where Ganondorf will approach you EXTREMELY slowly and then you just mash A. Then Ganondorf let’s out a roar with very bad voice acting again ruining the vibe and he dies just like that. This was the guy who was literally banished earlier because they couldn’t kill him because he was so powerful. What a letdown.
