The 4AGE was never had a carburetor on a production engine. Only some of the racing engines received a carburetor. Carbureting a 4AGE is a popular upgrade if you don't want to go through the trouble with an aftermarket ECU.
I had a 1987 Toyota Starlet. 5 door, 1.3L. It was quite fun to drive alright in an old-school way, but it was only a 4 speed. I could go 150km/h downhill haha
i have a 86 Dx with 5 speed and the 1.6L carbed 86hp was actually able to run out the speedometer on that thing on a long straight with me and my brother in the car, notice the 180km/h speedometer, it was scary as the road surface was not smooth but so much fun haha
To the owner, if this is anything like my 87 AE86 SR5 with the 4AC was (which I dont see why it wouldn't be), give the pedal two quick pumps before starting it on a cold day. I wanna say one initiated the electric choke and the other the fast idle for cold starts
@@Shyzah are girls not allowed to like cars and laugh about dick jokes? My significant other has two BMW e36 (one daily touring(that’s how BMW calls their wagons) with an automatic transmission and the small two liter inline six and one nice coupe with a manual transmission and the big inline six) and makes more dick jokes than she’s able to swallow!
Corolla FX, such a beautiful yet simple car. My dad's car is a Toyota Tercel '85 and the previous owner swapped the motor (3A-C) and put into the engine bay a 4A-C. The curious thing is that the gearbox belonged to a another Corolla and was 5 gear and runs quite smooth.
Toyota's manuals has a distinct feeling to them, even on the new cars. they're usually pretty light and have a long throw, and they go in gear pretty smoothly, so smooth infact that you can put them in gear without clutching and they won't grind at all.
That car in the LeMons race was a Plymouth Sundance (ie Dodge Shadow). It had the 3 liter V6. If I remember correctly, the ecu crapped out mid race. They borrowed a simple 2 barrel carb and slammed it on there to finish. Very cool engineering on the fly. Love hearing the stories from that series.
I think that all inline fours sounded the same in America in the 80s. That sound of acceleration just brings me right back to my dad's Mazda 323 and every Ford Escort I've ever been in.
i had one of those.. well the 1986 toyota corolla.. its pretty mad, it does skids with the handbrake... its very excillerating when you got it serviced then they made the carburetor work properly again.......... i had to get rid of it because of sevice expenses being cheaper to trade it in than to do brakes and tyres and fix oil leaks ...a misfire problem was the deciding factor to get rid of it fast i traded it in at a dealer when i purchased another vehicle and they gave me $100 for it
They’re great little cars. Even with the humble SOHC 8 valve 4A, they’re quite nippy. The gearbox has good ratios for the engine, and it’s surprisingly spacious inside.
I can relate to the slimy shifter. My steering wheel gets very sticky when it rains. I sometimes have to wear gloves, or I'll get black stuff stuck to my hands. Dat beater life!
Easy way to find the redline (sort of)... look up the maximum speed of each gear. Can be found in owners manual or google. My old honda lacks a tachometer as well. The original 1984 Civic owners manual told me 1st gear is good until 30 mph, amd i believe second is holds out until 57!
should drive an early toyota paseo. Definitely fits the "slow cars fast is more fun" thing 100%. if only they had turbo'd them like the starlet in japan.
I'll bet the "electronically controlled" stock carburettor's secondary is clogged like my '92 Vanette, it ran slow and hot for years until I figured it out. Take off the carby cover, clean out the top of the carby with carburettor cleaner spray, check vacuum lines and give it a rev out to find redline on a test-drive and if it suddenly picks up when the revs get really high, that's your problem. If not, it was fun finding rev limit right?
You talk about the Honda EF hatch as if the one you drove was the only one. The 70hp 4 speed one you drove was the base, pretty rare when they came out. The most common were the DX hatch that had a 5 speed and 92 hp. Then the Si had around 108hp, same as the FX GT-S hatch which had the AW11 MR2 engine (tiny drop in hp due to exhaust plumming).
Agreed. I have the 5 door liftback version of it's successor, the AE93, with the smallport 4AGE, and I'd love to see the FX16 for comparison. I'm pretty sure the FX16 weighs less, as the AE93 has more sound deadener and electric everything (Windows, mirrors), as well as nicer seats, so I'm pretty sure my later model weighs a noticeable amount more - yet it still feels light and it's heaps of fun to throw around.
I have the AE90 1989 Corolla FX Hatch. It has the sign "use only 98". If I travel to a country, where there is only 91 octane fuel, how do I add the octane booster/3-4oz of MMO lubricant/10 - 20 % Xylene?
Any Aussies? I don't know model names etc. Want to find out what the general base models for '84-'89 hatches and compact saloons/5 door hatches were. Low mainenance brick that could survive a mild t-boning through an intersectupn or pound up the rear in morning peak hour traffic.
Mr. Regular, you should drive a late 90s Chrysler Concord Lxi. I saw one today with a dent on every panel and it was a boat. I'm curious to here your thoughts on this American car
Considering the weight, a 20 valve 4AGE with 160 horsepower would be very fast and an easy swap to do. Maybe put the head of the 4AGE onto a 7AFE to create a 7A-GE engine for plenty of horses.
Around 8:50 the owner mentions he's aware of the FX16 and wants to buy disc brakes to swap over to the FX... Dude, just wait to find a FX16 to completely replace your FX.
I don't really like slow cars but this is different yes all of you non car guy friends will say ooooohhhh tjatttss slowwwer then my moooommmss cerrr and I be like it's a old 80s Toyota what can't you like even if it is slow it has a weird spririt and nostalgia soooo what's your problem.
If you can't find a relay to fit, you can use a resistor with vampire clips. Some vehicles use the ECU to control the blinkers and you can't change it with a relay swap. vled should have some info regarding LED swaps.
There's something nice about driving an old Toyota...
Right
EssThree Yup, I daily drive a '82 Tercel with the 3A-C all original (except the stereo, out of a Cressida)
+evoTimer feels daily a sr5 hatch pretty modified but old and rusty but strong! 4ac Webber But leaks here in Hawaii
yea im driving a starlet everyday its so much fun
1986 Celica here.
7:00 "I don't have a lot of pull out power" Mr. Regular must have many bastard children.
He doesn't because he uses the BROWN HOLE.
Minionslayer23 I lol'd

Something strangely nostalgic about these cars, used to see them all over, here in Norway in the 90s, friends' parents had them, etc.
I love those old things, wish I could find one in good shape.
Agreed. They rusted like crazy.
@@terryorcutt8739 i just did today
I might have one for sale come summer time has no rust and was owned buy an older gentleman
Old japanese cars are small/reliable and fuel economy. Old japanese car can go through small path for people.
why are you obsessed with trying to suggest ways to make this thing more powerful? I thought the fun of these cars was that they are fun while slow?
I had a 1987 Toyota Starlet. 5 door, 1.3L. It was quite fun to drive alright in an old-school way, but it was only a 4 speed. I could go 150km/h downhill haha
Johannes BR Yes mine was a 4 speed manual
I have a 3 door 1.0L from 1986, it will be swapped for the 1.3, both of the engines have a 5 speed manual.

i really like this car, idk why it's not fast or anything, but it would be cool to have as a first car. seems like a nice hatch, that or and EG civic
Alex Strömberg I got this car exactly a year ago for my first car and its the perfect car to use.

I kinda prefer these videos to your normal ones, love those, but its cool that you just driving for the first time.
I owned one of these cars few years ago. Very fun car to have.
don't worry Mr. regular, I don't have alot of pullout power either.
6:57 "Now I don't have a lot of pull out power"
Now we'll have baby Mr Regulars!
MiG21aholic that's all I got from the entire video hilarious
Mr regular's pull out game is his only weakness.
I had 86, it felt fast, had weak brakes, got 45 mpg highway, excellent in snow.
I had one of these back in the early nineties. Was a very reliable motor.

In case you didn't see it, The Grand Tour commented "brown" on the episode 3 trailer. I like to imagine that it's because Clarkson watches RCR.
Nah. Jeremy likes to tease James May about brown.
c'mon man let us live in this moment
That interior is very similar to the tercel. Very Spartan. Everything on those cars is function over form. That's why they were so light.

wow, first time i ever saw a video where i came when there's almost no one who watched it.

LED turn signals... On an old corolla.... Hahahahahaha
Quirky, but I never have to worry about replacing them! The brake lights and reverse lights are LEDs as well.
