  • Thank goodness Bradenton, Florida is a sleepy suburb with mild traffic because this work-in-progress BRAT had almost no brakes! The brat was still fun and I loved the easy-shift 4WD lever.

    It's good to see Mr. Regular driving a truly regular car again. I like the reviews of all the good cars but these POV's of the beater cars is great as well. It helps to even the series out.

    Oh wow. It reminds me of my Datsun 720 which came to me without power brakes/steering and 35" tires. The speedo was off by 75%, you had to rev it to 4500 to shift, the tires hit the fenders and the cab slid on the frame when you tried to stop.

    • @demonikelectronik
      @demonikelectronik 9 лет назад

      Under the spare tire the shift fork has the cable attached to it by adjustable nuts, and the hill assist is on there too, that needs to be adjusted along with the clutch cable, or removed like mine cause it's annoying. Loosening up the cable will move the engagement point closer to the floor, very tiny adjustments make a big difference so trial and error in small increments until you like where it engages..

That's because it was presented with confidence, commitment and intelligence. My first car (at a local speedway) had no front bumper whatsoever. I drove the car for two racing seasons and much like how you said this Brat would make you a better driver, I feel I've become a better racer because I couldn't afford to let the front of my car get hit. So now, even though I have a front bumper, I race as clean as I can because I know what can happen.

    Call me crazy if you want guys but I love this car XD. It is just like my first car. I had a 1979 datsun 140y 3 doors (b210 in US I used to live in el salvador and the names were different) It had a little 1.4 engine and 4 speed. These cars just go on and on. All the "issues" he had on this brat I had them in my datsun, the horrible brake fell (it did stop... eventually XD), the rock hard stering, that gearbox was just like mine. These type of cars do make you a better driver just like they were saying you have to plan ahead every single move and you just can not get distracted, well at least when you are just getting to know the car, after that you just do everything naturally. You always save an special spot on your heart for your first car even if it had all kind of issues.

    The clutch engages really high because it's worn out and the brakes don't work because they're either not bled correctly or the master is bad, a bad booster causes a situation where there is no servo assist and the brake pedal will be really hard not really soft, it also usually causes a big vacuum leak.

    The booster wont cause a low pedal. Sounds like the brake system wasn't bleed properly and still had air in it. When a power brake booster fails you get a very hard pedal.

  • @islandjon008
    @islandjon008 9 лет назад

    I miss my 85. I had the same issues with the bed seats due to the previous owner. Its easy enough to find a set of seats and build a bracket. As for the Weber carb, it is way better than the monstrosity of the stock carb. There were vacuum lines everywhere! Now you should only have about 3 total. Brake booster, ditsy advance, and I can't remember the other line. Might be only 2.
    BTW this is the EA81, it replaced the EA71 and was replaced by the EA82. After that you get into the EJ series. Just FYI.
    You may want to check your vacuum line to the booster if you haven't already.

    That's not a booster problem, that's a pushrod length problem, and possibly also an air problem. The previous owner was quite obviously completely inept, and very likely adjusted the booster pushrod to "compensate" for a low pedal. Reset the pushrod length, bleed the brakes, and check the brake lines (steel and rubber alike) for signs of moisture (typically dark spots). Replace as necessary.

    had an 81 2 door Subaru hatch that i beat mercilessly. .decided to go to the pine barrens after a snowstorm and and with 10 inches of fresh snow over the few we already got me and my fat Mexican buddy bombed down every quad trail I could remember and eventually sunk it nose first into a cranberry bog covered in ice.. never stopped running as carb was just above water line and the assend was hanging out above the ice.. we waded in ice water trying to leverage it out with rotten pine tree logs and damn near died of exposure till we trapsed to the main trail and encountered some pineys in a giant k5 blazer who yanked us out from pity or total amazement of how far we got..we didn't learn our lesson and with no heat other than a pep boys cigarette lighter plug in defroster dangling from the rear view mirror we continued our adventure bombing at absolute max down carrenza memorial road at 65 in 10 plus inches of snow getting passed by a pack of snowmobiles and spinning out in thier wake.. then the clutch cable ( metal cable..like a motorcycle ) broke and out came the vice grips and rev matching. .for the ride home. stalled out at a traffic circle at rt 70 after hot coffee at the wawa and a judge dredd Nj state trooper pulls up behind me.. after looking at us bundled up like Eskimos soaking wet in a shitbox subaru with bad pa inspection and a floor covered in blocks of ice he decided to just ticket the living shit out of me and send us on our way after verbal bashing of how unsafe the pile of shit we were in was and when we finally made it back to our n.e. Philly flop house bachelor pad the vice grip let loose and in reverse it stayed.

    I love BRATs. They're awesome, awesome cars - but they're quite hard to find, and expensive in my area.

    You guys should do a review on a third generation Camaro Iroc-Z/ Z-28 or Trans Am aka the mullet mobiles depending on who you ask. Would love to see that review.

    Is it called the brat because the back of the truck has enough room to hold a grill for cooking brats?

    About 50 miles away from my city at a small town there's a Brat for sale for 2500. Seems too good to be true but I'm debating on it anyway
