Even before the internet, a friend almost fell prey to someone 'renting' a home, at an unusually low price, to multiple people. They got a lock box key from an ex-realtor and were showing the home in person, to prospective tenants. He asked for a deposit, first and last and said the home would be available at the end of the month, two weeks from then. She told him she needed to r/s again to show her roommate. She drove around the block after viewing the home, parked out of sight, and watched as another viewer wrote the a check, then an hour later, another potential did the same thing.

@@cynicalcindy1434 not true. The reason why do people get conned is because you pay these fools online right away before you even seen the building at least go to the building first and then give him the deposit once you check it out you don't pay for online first

I almost fell victim for this scam to I almost believe the men who was going to rent to me I contacted the agents of the home that was supposed to be rented out so yes definitely if there out of town or you can't see the property and they claim to have the keys definitely a red flag.😒
I guy I dealt with was in Texas "on assignment". I was to send money first with the online application then the keys would be mailed to me at my house so I could inspect the property.
I saw a listing online for a beautiful 2 bed/2 bath for rent. They wanted $1000 a month and showed a beautifully renovated home with tile floors, a fireplace, in-unit washer/dryer, etc. It seemed pretty cheap, even a little too good to be true. It was listed on Zillow so I sent a message saying I was interested. A few hours later I received an e-mail. The man refused to speak on the phone or meet in person. He told me to "drive by and peek in the windows" if I wanted to see it and "ignore the for sale sign out front". He told me to send him first month, last month and an $800 deposit. I told him to f*** off and that he would be reported to law enforcement. No more e-mails after that. Watch out for fake listings!!!
Maybe that is what happens when you are forced to provide too much personal information on Facebook, Google, etc., and other social media outlets. The renters would have had to prove more of their information to the perspective buyers rather than the opposite scenario when you are posing as a business. Just like sitting ducks :)

When me and my mom was looking for a 4 bedroom home we came across a 5 bedroom house for 900 A MONTH! So we scheduled a day to take a look at the home and that same day we supposed to pay the down payment with the rent but he wanted it in cash so that was a red flag for us but being desperate we still went to the home to meet up with him. We was waiting forever but he called and said his car was broken down at the gas stations up the road from the house can we just meet him there and he would give us the key to the house. So my mom didnt like that idea at all. So we decided to knock on the neighbors door and ask about the house and surprisingly the neighbor confirmed that the owner still lives there and he isn’t renting it out. So when we called the “fake owner” number. The neighbor screamed when he looked at my phone screen and said thats his son number and apologized to us and also told us his son is a registered sex offender so that scared tf out of us because we was just two women alone! Later that day he was arrested thank god i was also pissed we drove over a hour just to witness bs like this!
The renter gets the money when I get the keys. Period. And we exchange in a bank or some place like that, with cctv cameras watching. That way his face is exposed. Also, it seems vitally important to verify that renters are who they say they are. Checking business addresses and running their names through a background check. As well as, checking the county dockets to see if the deed is truly in their name. JUST DAMN! You darn near need to be an investigator or lawyer these days, just to rent property and not get scammed out of your money.
They also create ads on Craigslist offering work for babysitters n supposedly pay upfront for weeks before even working and send cashiers check of 2,000 and want you to tell them if it went through or not
This actually happened to me. My mom and I were constantly visiting this house that apparently was for rent. But we kept noticing a car nearby and became very suspicious. I managed to IP track this guy via his email address-- he was in FINLAND.
Some of these have the feel of insider knowledge about the listings. The key to the door? The timing of the process has to be so perfect. You start moving in and next day, hey your not suppose to be here. The sooner your out the next scam can begin. Almost like new world mafia scam with players distancing themselves to not be a part of the crime.
I feel zero sympathy for these people. This isn't new. You never send money to people for rental property. It even tells you online. If it looks too good......
I was scammed but got lucky with my persistence and long story short the guy is in jail after detective got a grand jury subpoena and I received a letter from DA. This world is turning into darkness.
I found my house for sale in Craigslist. My husband & I were looking for similar houses to see our competition. We emailed Craiglist to remove the list. They did within 24 hours. Don't buy anything through individuals. Make sure you go through a legitimate realtor & go through the Title Companies.
I just had a call from a man than almost got scammed renting from someone on Craigslist. Luckily he called and I told him no one by that name actually lived there.
Now on cragslist , they say I’m away in some state and have the key of house , just pay me rent and I’ll send u the key .. smh 🤦🏽♀️ who falling for this shit
Here is how you stop it. The renter payso the online company to advertise, with a valid bank account, then The online rental company holds the rental money until the renter moves in, end of scam
My mom almost fall for one, he said he was out of town for vacation, for us to stop by the house and if we like it, we cant do everything by phone and send the money thru western union, when we got to the western union, the lady who was taking care of us said, ma'am, I had quite a few people sent money to this person then came back here for their money but there was nothing I could do , they were ripped off, my mom and I called him , he didnt answer the call but he texted back, I said hey ; before we send the money I need you to send me documents that you own the house along with ID ,landlord and rental permits, he never replied back🤨 then gain i would've not trusted those documents they could've also been fake.
Wow I had this happen with a house. I came to look at house and was taking pictures when the family that lived there was coming back from an outing. So embarrassing😩 if it doesn’t seem right most likely it’s NOT right!
Whether it is the amount of $0.01 to $1,000,000, stealing is stealing. And dont law enforcement agencies know they will continue to steal that could very well add up to a million dollars and could be to late for whatever reason the thieves wanted the money in the first place...come on people get with the program...sending any amount of money to a terrorist can be deadly and no one, law enforcement too should assume otherwise. I dont know about anyone else but any amount can fill like a million dollars to that person who was scammed.
Why not just put a sign up that the house isnt for sale and have a camera aimed at the sign so if someone tries to take it down you at least catch them in the act
This is the smartest way even by the owner, if is not , so how those guys they have the key in first place ? second they made up with the owner and when they make the deal and take the money the owner will show up this is very normal in America.
Why doesn't the FBI track the phone number and find who owns the number through the phone company?? I guess it's not that easy cuz they could put a fake number in the add....idk
This is still going on in louisville ky... And probably everywhere... Its sad... Although ive never fail for the scam... Im sure there are many who have.... Sad indeed...
@Corrupt Crooked You don't need to be poor to not be able or willing to spend that much a week for vacation. It's much cheaper and more enjoyable to just stay a week at a luxury hotel.
Exactly what I thought...good to know there are no charities feeding hungry children or housing the sick & old that could use that money. Gee, can't figure out why people are getting rid of cable! This is one show I won't mind missing on moralistic grounds.
There are many and most that are true to what is there but we have intuition for a reason and you should use it. Dont let the world scare you out of living. I dont mean you arent if not using CL 😏 I just mean in general. Take care
You'd be surprised, In some towns people are so friendly with their neighbors and crime rates are low enough for them to just not worry about leaving their door unlocked.
Idiot. It is how the news works and the money will be earned back in advertising revenue that makes $1850 look like chump change. The person got the money and split, there is your proof it is a scam.
In the mcminnville cases, the guy showed them the house in person... it was under renovation, and due to be completed in a couple weeks. He was a real guy, with rental applications. The problem only arose when they were supposed to get the keys the day of or day before move in...
Megan L same happen to week 2 days ago been talking w guy who went by “ Patrick Gallo” I toured the house he had the keys in the back and which I was supposed to get the code for the day I moved in. He sent me the applications I filled them out then he sent me the rental agreement he did everything but give me the keys. Now I’m out $2,300
People do this with event tickets as well.. They'll sell you a real ticket with legitimate seats . Then the day of the event ..they'll claim they lost their ticket. So the staff have to void your ticket and the scamer gets a new one. They keep your money and your stuck outside the event you planned to go. Never buy tickets on craigslist!!! =)
So this is a type of scam too. There are people that will break into house that are obviously vacant, change the locks to a digital lock and then rent it out on the internet. The real owners have no idea because to them it is an investment house or a vacation home they only use once or twice a year.
@vilan sun It takes less than 10 minutes to go in threw a window opening, or just twist and break the door knob with vice grips, and install new door locks.
I actually found my apartment on Craigslist, but I went through so many scams. The classic "I am living out of state right now and can send you the keys as soon as you send me the rent money" I refuse to give money to anybody I don't meet in person, even at that you still have to be careful. If you work hard for your money, you should be careful where it goes.
I looked at a rental in Bakersfield from a Craig's List ad and knew almost immediately it was a scam. They said they would mail me the key after I put down $1200 payment and the owner was a doctor living out of the country who just wanted to rent their house for a few years. I went to the house and it was for sale - not for rent. I called the local realtor and they were shocked that this was being done. I can see how this could happen since a lot of AirBNB postings are done on the Internet. BEWARE!
I saw a townhome for rent so I contacted the owner and he said he’s in Thailand for a business trip and to send the money and he’ll mail the key. Yeah, No.
Craigslist should have been the first and only clue! Garbage site that needs to be policed a lot more than it is! I used to use it for jobs, but all the jobs are garbage too!
celeryg66 couple years back this happened to me. Except I saw them coming from a mile away figuratively speaking lol. I actually contacted the complex where the luxury condos were and went down there in person. I had let them know that someone has been trying to sell their condos as well as trying to rent them out. Keys would be sent after the deposit, first and last months rent were received. It was some scam story how they went on a mission to Africa with the church etc you get the point. My excuse i used with them was I was on housing and needed the landlord to fill out the paperwork in person then return it. Thats how i would catch them. Brillant plan lol.
craigslist now charges 5 bucks to list a service like cleaning, petsitting, etc! Don't charge the scammed charge ppl trying to make a living way to go craigslist.
Police it yourself! That is what being free and independent in this country means. Clamoring for regulation and controls because you are too dumb or lazy is what is driving us into a POLICE STATE. If you lose money to someone consider it tuition and lesson learned.
This happened to me in Portland, OR. I was trying to find housing for a single mother, I was her social worker at the time. She kept insisting she had found this amazing house for only 800/month and it broke my heart to tell her its a scam because she would not believe me, she kept arguing with me because basically she really needed the house. Finally I got other state officials on the phone to confirm that the phone number the guy used was connected to known scammers in China (the guy who answered had a thick Chinese accent) who spoofed a local number. Also I found the house had just been put up on Zillow. Its not hard to figure out if you're being scammed you just need to know what to look for, but mostly like other people are saying here if its too good to be true or it looks like a great deal its almost definitely fake, people don't voluntarily take way less money than they could.
Unfortunately, this happens with regular house rentals as well! The person that I contacted allowed me to enter the home and look around. What got me was that the person immediately wanted me to leave a deposit on the home prior to even filling out any information. When I did not want to leave a deposit right then and there, the person got angry with me. I mean really angry. The rental rate was just too good to be true. Be careful out there.
Before Internet this rarely happened. Before Internet we looked at hard print newspaper ads for advertisements which can be tracked down more easily or we used rental agents with landline phones that could be tracked. Cell phones and Internet have created a whole new way for criminals to steal money from you.
People have been victims of conmen since the dawn of time! These modern scams are usually _less_ sophisticated than those of antiquity, and those who fall prey to them should be classed as having an intellectual disability, with some protections put in place for them (such as a proxy to deal with unknown telephone callers and dubious correspondence).
Do you know why craigslist has not shut down ..?? Because they are not doing anything wrong. They are just the host site. Your mentality is wrong and this is the problem with society ... Because of people like you making these stupid ignorant comments or assumptions, innocent web sites are shut down when they have NO control on who gets to post ... Once a criminal is caught on Craigslist ... Their email is removed from the system, all they have to do is create another email and keep posting fake adds ...
wisdom and love: Wise and TRUE ... Do you have any idea how many scams there are on eBay ..?? And this idiot American Ninja would probably want to shut down eBay also ... People today have no thinking or logic skills ..
No, the scam is on _all of us_ average people - that some individuals and/or families can painlessly cough up $20000 a week for a holiday home rental. The owner _asks_ for $20k/week because he _knows_ he can actually charge that much.
When I was renting my first house I got a call from a girl who was moving from a different city and said she cant come until the move but wanted the house. I told her the only way I will hold the house until she arrives is if she E transfers the damage deposit up front. If someone else pays the damage deposit first, she wont get the house. 2 hours later $1300 is deposited in my bank account. I was like WOW really? She never even came to look at the house! It was all legit and she moved in and paid the rent every month until she moved out but like wow. So the next renter I did the same thing. E transfer the damage deposit. next day bang, money in my bank account. 2 for 2. Third renter was a guy. I said yep you can move in right away but you have to pay the damage deposit up front, and you get the keys when you pay the first month......he is at my door with a bunch of his buddies and "wants to talk" I said come right in! I show him the house, he is clearly suspicious. He comes back again with his girlfriend. I said so the damage depos.....he leaves. I call him and hes like dude there is no way on earth I am giving you any money up front. So I said ok, then what we do is you come over, sign the lease, take the lease, put it in your pocket, at that point you are legally protected by the lease. Then, deposit the money, and I give you the keys at the same time. Then, hand me back the lease, and I sign it. I literally had to put the keys on the table and take a step back while he hit send on his phone. I said ok its deposited. He grabs the keys. Hands back the lease. I sign it. His buddies are standing in the kitchen with all this going on. He has been an A+ renter ever since.
I've had quite a few people try to scam me recently looking to rent a house. The biggest red flag is the bad spelling, out of state phone numbers and their urgency to rent the place. The last one tried to get me to send money directly to a bank account for the deposit and would tell me where the key was in the unlocked house. Another one wanted me to mail a money order and they would mail me the key. They claimed to be huge christians and were going way overboard with the religious stuff all the way into the late hours of 1am. Another one I emailed late at night my number and they called almost immediately at a little past midnight which took me back that they would respond back by phone that late. I emailed because it was late and expected the same. Another one out of the blue texted me at almost 2am to call her please and I tried to chalk it up to maybe she texted the wrong person but the next day I mentioned nothing about the text and asked to come to the office I was told it was 6 hours away at the other end of the state and they do all their business without meeting and so I let her email me an application where too much personal info was asked like ss numbers, mothers maiden name and past addresses made me believe this was an identify thief trying to get personal info.
@@suzyrottencrotch5132 Every _millisecond!_ (Which, of course, does _not_ include those who weren't born suckers, but came to be so due to acquired brain injuries, for example.)
Okay, this is barely English, and virtually _incomprehensible!_ Let me attempt a translation: 'How do we know that the owners aren't behind this fraud?' [Is that what she's trying to say?!?] Also, you don't even require a 3-digit IQ to answer that. The _actual_ owners are _easily_ investigated, and would also _lose_ money renting for such relatively low pricing.
I actually ran across myself. The guy was obviously in Pakistan or etc & using Google Voice to talk on the phone w/ a USA phone number. What they did was copy home listings from other sites and list them for rent on Zillow & Craigslist. These are homes that the real estate company has a digital keypad lock for and you can get codes to view the home. So the scammer would get the codes, but since there's a delay for them to get it there's back and forth with text messages or emails etc. I hate to think how many people get scammed this way. I could tell it was a scam right away. Also, the rent listed was cheaper than it should have been and the whole thing felt "weird." That should be a big red flag for people. I told the guy I knew he was a scammer and he just asked "how did you know?" I simply said it's obvious to me (didn't want to give him ideas).
So it's to big for local law enforcement and to small for federal..... sounds like a perfect loophole

“When you give me the key I’ll give you a check”. Problem solved.
I did my research before giving my current info or any money. And yes, it was a scam!
People who have been in touch with you
1500 a week. And i rent for 600 dollar a month a while house with 3 sleeping rooms, big garden for allot less money.
Give me your money bubble gum and taffy.
Why isn't the website held responsible for the fake add? They have to be certain postings are legit, dont they?
Good grief. Never fork over a dime until y there in person. And look up tax info on property which will give you owners name.
Scammers will keep going, because dummies, like in this video, are born every minute.
Wow I had this happen with a house. I came to look at house and was taking pictures when the family that lived there was coming back from an outing. So embarrassing😩 if it doesn’t seem right most likely it’s NOT right!
This video has inspired me to start a business
He would have been strung up if this was 50 years ago.
1500 a night is logical. Not weekly for that house
That dude should lock his door first of all.
Recognized that there were total strangers.
They use Throw away cell phones. Like Drug dealers used
Wouldn’t it be funny if it was the homeowner.
it happened in Sturgis SD 2 years for bike week. the Scam was discovered by the home ownwr back in jan 2016
Wow there are people out there that can afford to rent a house for 20k a week?
Yall paid him 1,800 dollars after knowing its a scam who won you or David
You guys gave away $1850 just to run through this? You probably gave him like 3 years worth of salary and more motivation to do this.
Why dont the police track the bank account where the money is deposited. Also the owner of the number David is calling from.
Okay why was a house like that unlocked???
8:30 you can hear an automated voice... I'm like 95% sure she wasn't talking to anyone but the voicemail
$400/month...... for that house.....😐
The cops always talking about it’s nothing they can do 🙄 they fraudulent too 😒
Why doesn't the FBI track the phone number and find who owns the number through the phone company?? I guess it's not that easy cuz they could put a fake number in the add....idk
Always double check ✔️😄👍
This is still going on in louisville ky... And probably everywhere... Its sad... Although ive never fail for the scam... Im sure there are many who have.... Sad indeed...
i feel bad for the little guys
Did Bugsy Siegel scam people with a machine gun?
Why can’t they catch him, they can trace him through his phone isn’t it
Old rule of thumb...if it sounds too good to be true, it isn't true...
Indeed.
When a house 4rent is 750. In a neighborhood where they start at double that, yea scam- but I scammed them back for the time I put in
Rule a thumb,I told them I need it immediately and will send a years rent in advance, then tellum they can go down on a rhino
Exactly. I’ve seen this too much when I was looking for a place.
That's what my mom used to say.
Renting a house for $20,000 a week should be criminal too,.
yeah...martha's vineyard is where I was born & raised...it's outrageously expensive can't go home.
Corrupt Crooked Ovjo jviovjvjvjvojvjvojvojvojovjvojovjvojvvojvjvjvjvjvbakcjjojjc
That was for a down payment on a house for "sale" a lot of ppl fell for the same house.
I feel the same way....u can buy a house for that much ...
@Corrupt Crooked You don't need to be poor to not be able or willing to spend that much a week for vacation. It's much cheaper and more enjoyable to just stay a week at a luxury hotel.
Did they really just give money to a scammer to prove a point?
I think so...
No ya know how those cop shows go under cover on TV but somehow get the $$$ back like the catch the criminal so that's how they get the $$
Keegz same thing I was thinking
Keegz I know hey. So David wins in the end. Lol
Exactly what I thought...good to know there are no charities feeding hungry children or housing the sick & old that could use that money. Gee, can't figure out why people are getting rid of cable! This is one show I won't mind missing on moralistic grounds.
Craigslist? I don't trust anything on Craigslist.
Now the world knows and scammers will all go away. Thank you for your announcement.
There are many and most that are true to what is there but we have intuition for a reason and you should use it. Dont let the world scare you out of living. I dont mean you arent if not using CL 😏 I just mean in general. Take care
I never have any trouble with Craigslist. You just have to recognize which postings you shouldn't even bother responding to.
Yet there you are, surfing Craigslist, looking at the next thing you won’t trust.
RIGHT!!! Nothing good ever comes whenever you hear the words "Craigslist". I have personally never used It and I won't, bevause of this reason.
OMG!!!! THIS HOUSE WAS ON AIRBNB! Even I looked at it!
Telia Young plot-twist, homeowner is the scammer. 😂
@@birdeyes200 lmao
birdie that is what I thought too lol I mean come on. His house door was unlocked
Wow why was his house unlocked
Probably because it's Lake Tahoe and there's no crime. Plus he's rich and doesn't care.
He is probably the one scamming the people
@@MsMo81 lol
that_G_EvanP no, because he is stupid. Behaving like that is simply stupid. You ALWAYS lock your house, car, bags, everything. Period.
You'd be surprised, In some towns people are so friendly with their neighbors and crime rates are low enough for them to just not worry about leaving their door unlocked.
Why the news lady give that scammer $1,850 for? Can't she said we meet you at the house with the cash to get the key?
Exactly. She gave him a free $1,850 and she's like, "I sure showed him!"
Idiot. It is how the news works and the money will be earned back in advertising revenue that makes $1850 look like chump change. The person got the money and split, there is your proof it is a scam.
yup, way to further enable a criminal. stupid
Moonwalker829 I know. Wow
That was the bagel budget
I was almost scammed as soon as he said to pay before we met or I would lose the house and to pay via Western Union I was out of there!

@Red Divinity had to bring politics into it..
If you send 2 grand without tracking for an ad from Craigslist, then it's natural selection at this point.
Olaf Sikorski Thank you.

In the mcminnville cases, the guy showed them the house in person... it was under renovation, and due to be completed in a couple weeks. He was a real guy, with rental applications. The problem only arose when they were supposed to get the keys the day of or day before move in...
Paypal
This happend to my buddy and his 3 roommates stayed at a house for 4 months then the owner came back from vacation
All of them were pretty shocked
Dummies that leave their doors unlocked
Gebus Da Trap God 4 month vacation?
MiVidaBellisima and? you’re supposed to get the keys to that house
The classic "I am living out of state right now and can send you the keys as soon as you send me the rent money"
I refuse to give money to anybody I don't meet in person, even at that you still have to be careful.
BEWARE!
Never pay upfront. Almost any house the owner of the house can be look up on line. Just type city treasurer or GIS and type in the address
I saw a townhome for rent so I contacted the owner and he said he’s in Thailand for a business trip and to send the money and he’ll mail the key.
Yeah, No.
I cant believe theres dumbasses thatfall for that. But there are
Same exact story!

@@catmagic2226 yea,I ran an ad for 5 bucks not one call

Exactly. Low rents are SCAMS . BEWARE. It’s going on everywhere!
I almost got caught like this....but they were so dumb....the red flags were super obvious....lol....I'm like no....
Common sense people if it looks and sounds too good to be true it probably is.
Before Internet this rarely happened. Before Internet we looked at hard print newspaper ads for advertisements which can be tracked down more easily or we used rental agents with landline phones that could be tracked. Cell phones and Internet have created a whole new way for criminals to steal money from you.
Ok but also alot of great things came from the internet bitch
DanielD37 shutup bitch!
With every good comes corresponding bad.
Ok boomer
With how many scammers are on Craigslist I don't understand how the site hasn't been shutdown by now.
AmericanNinja85 I’ve actually had good luck on the site but you’re right if you’re talking about thousands of dollars

@American Ninja85, you know sometimes you have to use common sense and do the thinking for yourself, you cant expect others to.
The real scammer here is the home owner wanting 20k a week for rent.
So you didn't do any background checks or anything?
whats an A+ renter? a dumbass?
Another one out of the blue texted me at almost 2am to call her please and I tried to chalk it up to maybe she texted the wrong person but the next day I mentioned nothing about the text and asked to come to the office I was told it was 6 hours away at the other end of the state and they do all their business without meeting and so I let her email me an application where too much personal info was asked like ss numbers, mothers maiden name and past addresses made me believe this was an identify thief trying to get personal info.

....he doesn't need it and he'd also be the first place they look. Way too obvious.
I said the same shit lol I was joking of course
Okay, this is barely English, and virtually _incomprehensible!_ Let me attempt a translation:
'How do we know that the owners aren't behind this fraud?' [Is that what she's trying to say?!?] Also, you don't even require a 3-digit IQ to answer that. The _actual_ owners are _easily_ investigated, and would also _lose_ money renting for such relatively low pricing.

How was the door open without the owners knowledge.🔐🚪????
