- More than five months after he put his home up for sale, a professional photographer finally turns to design expert Sofie Allsopp and contractor Anthony Sayers for help transforming the dated interior of his Victorian home.

Beautiful home to begin with. I like the magic wallpaper. I wish the industry would get over their obsession with grey everything.
George is typical of a single man who has lived in his comfort zone for many years.
Most definitely
Where I live houses are sold within 24 hours and there are 8 buyers trying to buy the house. No matter what old ugly furniture or bad paint jobs they may have.
Where? San Diego?9
@@WillChil466 I'm just gonna say it is the West Coast, not San Diego but close.
I know the exterior needed an update, but the colors they chose added very little curb appeal! It was so drab. They definitely could have selected more attractive colors.
The blue on the front was quite nice, just needed to paint the "gold", grey or white.
Those dragonflies were hideous too.
Aiden Raiden I agree
George is so smart, he got a free home renovation in a house that he already received for free. He aint selling that place.
+SylphofVoid13 yea this is what i was thinking while watching
I don't think they do it for free.
SylphofVoid13b
Yes they do it for free. It's what their show is based on. The cost per episode is peanuts relative to other TV programs.
Peanuts is right, since all we are talking about are some strategically chosen pieces of furniture and maybe a new coat of paint, not a Property Brothers type of remodel.
He’ll be smoking and smirking in that house for years to come.
Plenty of room to park his bicycle in the living room and his foosball table in the dining room.
Think I would have got rid of the yellow ceilings
He obviously dosent have any intention of actually selling the place, if youre motivated and want to ( in his case go travelling ) 92% of the asking price can be negotiated to 95% and then its a done deal, hes lived there his whole life, he just wanted a cheap renovation
The people whose homes are featured on these home reno shows have to pay for it. They don't get it for free or even cheap.
Scarlet Ribbons they pay for the materials but get free labour though .
Well maybe when he saw how nice it looked...
G.ea.M SMART! GUY 😀
I was wondering if anyone was going to say that.
Kinda funny that traditional victorian colors are not popular for a victorian house.
It's not that blue and yellow can't work together, it's that the shades and proportions were all wrong. If this had been a baby blue/midnight combo, with just strips of sunshine or baby yellow (instead of butter-yellow), it would have worked. But there was just too much contrast.
But IMO, the worst 'crime' was painting brick in the first place. (I see painted brick, I wonder which gang tagged the building underneath the paint.)
I think it's that the color scheme was not harmonious with the neighborhood.
I was thinking the same thing. I have a 120-year-old Victoria house of about that size. It's white, but when you see photos of them back when they were built, there's lots of color. I may paint it one day, but probably not as boldly as he did.
I thought to myself, the colors did not bother me and seemed fitting. But they remind me of homes in NOLA and I grew up on the gulf coast. It is not for everybody. But, it is kinda for me.
Thank you!
I happen to love the exterior colors. When I look at houses, I look at the size, shape and condition of rooms and house...not the furniture!
Some people are incredibly shallow and short sighted.
I think she turned an adorable Victorian into a gray, dull nothing. The reactions of the "new potential buyers" are less than impressed--they seem very bored with it.
SHE'S more impressed with her work than they are!
I'd fire her!
If he already had 6 offers he doesn't need to be on this show, clearly people are interested in the house. The house is not selling because HE is rejecting their offers, not because there's anything wrong with the house.
They were offering less than his asking price. That was the point of updating. The 92% offer was still declined no matter how it looked, or didn't smell.
It's the "multiculturalism " that's scaring people away
She announced that all sorts of ethnic groups live near there as if that is a great thing. I assume many would not think so.
@@stripervince1 RACIST SACK OF SHIT!

I suspected he never planned on selling his home!
olivertwist69 Ikr, I think he just wanted the free redesign.
Yes, I think, he is the type of guy, needs a little bit input in a boring life without investing anything, exact the behavior, which this world do not need.
I'd have maybe kept the blue. Maybe swapped the gold out for white. It gave it character. The exterior 'after' colour is sooo painfully drab. And...dragonflies on the walls in the main bedroom. *Cringe*
Or the blue with a burnt brick red
I would have kept the he and gold that distinguished this house from the neighboring ones. The interior was improved ever so much. Adding headboard, freshly painted interior, new, clean slipcovers and the wingback chairs all made a huge improvement and transformed it to ready to move into. Getting rid of tobacco smoke smell a huge improvement.
Yes, I would have just changed the gold to white. Dragonflies....yeeesh!
I loved the outside colors and you fix up and place your furniture how you like it. You have to look through what is there for the potential of the home.
Never see Victorian homes when watching British shows. This is surreal for me. Three people were Brits but the people they showed it to seemed to have American accents.
Victorian homes in the UK don't have the same style of trims, also they vary greatly in style and building materials depending on the region.
The kitchen was plain. And you didnt show the bathrooms.why, thats part of a house people are interested in.
I was hoping she would add some historic details to the kitchen. That would have been fun and an easy fix.
He wants people to pay for the emotional price of this house which will never happen- memories are priceless
he just wanted a makeover.....didn't really wanna sell his childhood home. smh
+Lola Hernandez She's got a paid tv show; she's not hurting for income.
+soxpeewee 💯
Smart
How is it his childhood home when he has only been in it 30 years? He is at leased 50.
Thank you so much. I don't have TV and am disabled...so this is a gift!
It's a beautiful home, but I think there's more to this story than George is letting on. It's clear to me and probably many others that he's not ready to let go of his Mom's house. I truly understand! Eventually he'll be ready to let go, but for now he should just pursue his photography via vacationing rather than selling.
I would think that if he's truly interested in photography and has a good eye for composition, he could find interesting subject matter almost anywhere, he is in a big city, so there "should" be a lot of things to photograph. Guess it depends just what it is he's looking to take pictures of...
Wish I could have a team come in and re-do rooms, just so I could turn down buyers! Damn
Did anyone else notice the hideous and cheap looking (1960's?) wrought iron columns on the front porch? They undoubtedly replaced the original wood ones years ago, they could so easily be replaced with metal poles surrounded with real wood (or even fiberglass) authentic looking columns. It was obviously an inexpensive quick fix that someone decided to just let ride. It RUINS the entry look!
So your saying replace wrought iron with - maybe - fibreglass?? Ye gods, how classy is that?!! 1960's has an age by now, in its own right. It is certainly a darn sight better than fibreglass on a Victorian house.
Modernizing a Victorian Home automatically looses me as a buyer. If así look for Victorian homes, I am not looking for updated ones.
Me too! If I choose to take away from the historical character, I will be the one to decide what to do and how to best go about it without tarnishing its beautiful past.
i love the colors geez especially the royal blue inside by the steps
If he's had several offers and didn't sell.....that means he really doesn't want to sell
After the redo, he's definitely not selling.
Leave out bowls or pans of raw ammonia and that will pull a lot of the nicotine smell out of the air.
Similarly, washing the walls and woodwork with ammonia will prep for priming and painting.
Ammonia would just overpower it. Instead of cig.s u get cat poss smell. Not a great deal.
@@WillChil466 - The ammonia and the smell evaporates.
Why paint a brick & stone house in the first place? Painting just adds maintenance to the basically maintenance free exterior.
Sometimes the stone color is just ghastly in terms of changing fashion and taste, like the trend to use dirty-looking, gothic, grey-beige bricks instead of a nice terracotta brick. They look filthy and ugly no matter what you do to them.
Jean Vignes - Agreed. I live in the house my granddad built 70 years ago. It was the first one built on my street. When my granddad passed in the late 90’s, I moved in. I redecorated the inside and just added shutters on the outside. Painted brick was not popular in this area back then. But over the years, more and more people around me started painting their brick homes, giving them a fresh, updated look, while mine looked drab and dated. I finally painted my brick in 2010, and I absolutely love it! I also put on a new roof with architectural shingles, changed the shutters, and replaced the ironwork on the porch with columns. Made the house look so much better! And the paint still looks as good as it did on day one. Yes, it will eventually need to be repainted, but if it’s done properly (removing any peeling or cracked paint) it will last a long time. Totally worth it.
@@theoriginaleb9616 - Your home sounds lovely. I always want to remind homeowners how blessed they are. I'm 62 and despite my best efforts I've never been able to afford my own home. Enjoy! ;0)
@@jeanvignes Sometimes owning a home can be a pain in the ass, my house is paid off, but now it needs new plumbing, electrical, Hvac and oh yeah kitchen remodel and don't forget about property taxes and insurance and will need a new roof eventually and a new paint job.
One of the previous owners was too lazy to match the mortar color on my porch when they repainted the brick work. It looks terrible and I’ll probably paint it when I decide to sell the house.
I like the outside paint, BEFORE they painted
Surely potential buyers can see what it can be !
Magic Wallpaper? New, innovative product?... its embossed wallpaper, it's been used since forever and very popular 40 years ago. 🙄
Two generations later few would know that
I get the smoke. But it amazes me people have to see a house decorated to buy it. But then again people in general are pretty stupid. And I doubt he wanted to sell to begin with. And he’s right, people don’t have the imagination. People want to be like everyone else, they are scared to be different even if they did like it. They would be afraid what their friends would say
Debbie Potter I agree about the furniture not being what sells but modern do overs seem to think it shows the potential. think they hire the furniture for these selling makeovers. There are no overt adverts for where they got them.
Buyers are not sensible. They see one thing they love-one $100 decor item and they buy for that. Ha! Hot tubs sell homes all the time. Peepl love the idea then hate them for the upkeep needed. Saunas are way lower mntnc.
When you decorate a home(with furniture) you are selling the possibilities of what the house can be. It’s not so much that people are trying to sell the furniture but rather, creating a vision for how it can look to the seller.
I bought a cute ranch house last year..The furniture was pretty outdated(and or broken), the colors in rooms were very gaudy- My master bedroom is Lime Green- it made me hesitant. At first I couldn’t vision living here, it had a lot of work and it’s only 14 year old. We put in an offer and have been here for a year( it’s the yard that ultimately sold me), and I’m so glad we took a chance. It’s a silly concept, putting a bunch of furniture in a home/decorating it, but it actually sells a lot more homes than just leaving it empty. 😊
Not stupid, just unimaginative
Yes is funny to me too as where I live in FL, houses are shown empty.
He's awfully snooty for someone who got his house free from his mommy. Maybe I'm just envious that my mommy didn't give me a house.
It is lower than the area and who cares if he has a stained mattress?!?!?! I'm not going to live on, with, or use his stuff, he'll be taking it with him! You have to expect to paint and make changes when you buy a home. He has a modern kitchen and they say nothing about the electricity and plumbing--if it were newer than there you go!
I love the blue and gold. It just needs to be cleaned and cared for.
What are these people talking about? You don't look at how a house is decorated or furnished! You look at the location, the space and the bones of the house when deciding whether to buy or not. The furniture? You bring your own furniture and decorate it the way you like. The color scheme? Ever hear of paint? I wouldn't buy a house that is less then 2 feet away from my neighbor, but that's my preference, and from there you start talking price.
Bullettube, that's what I've been saying. Unless you are looking at a relatively new house, you'd better be looking at the plumbing, checking for evidence of water damage, and the general soundness of the structure. You'd also be advised to observe the neighbors and what's going on that block.
If someone can't see past the current owner's decorating, they probably need to be living at home with Mommy and Daddy.
agreed, but most buyers have no imagination. I was able to see past the owner's original furnishings. The smell of smoke would be an issue for some, but you'd need to rent an ozone machine to clear that and some fresh paint and that would definitely make it more saleable.
Smart people do so they don't end up with something that costs more than it's worth but most people don't have the imagination to see what it could or couldn't be unfortunately. I wish I could afford a Victorian.
Laura Hogenmiller he wants to sell it for more than it is worth, obviously.
Have you ever sold a home? I have, and there is so much more to selling then what you said
I LOVE the blue & gold exterior.....unfortunately, people are happily drowning, under a sea of BEIGE/GREYGE !
Yes! I'm currently looking for paint colors and every time I suggest a color I'm shown some brown thing. Everyone says, think about resale value, well shit! I haven't even moved in yet. It's like people are allergic to color. We're all supposed to be equally dull, gray, brown, taupe, beige...
I agree. I loathe the beige and neutral trend. I do, however, think that either white, cream or a soft colour is good when selling a house as it is something many people can live with until they make it their own.
I liked the exterior colours, although it's a pity to paint over the beautiful colours in Victorian bricks.
kez kezooie if you are selling a house, a regular house, then staying with safe colors is a good idea. But if the house is for you, enjoy it.
carol ward Ugh,yes. I loved the blue exterior.
Jason Yanes you make a valid point and I know lots of people would agree with you. But even though neutral colors are "safe" and all, there are people who are annoyed by those neutral colors to the point where they would look elsewhere if house shopping. I see beige, tan, and putty colored walls and think "yuck". It's ugly to me, but also looks old and uncared for, almost dusty. A house shouldn't look sad, it should feel homey imo.
With the money, I'd buy it in a heart beat, AS IS!
You didn't show the whole house .Why ..
You can paint any secure wallpaper. I've done it dozens of times.
dynodish Not a good idea
Isn't it odd that his bed was on the floor when a frame and headboard was in the garage?
single men are a plague to interior design
@@johniautumn6847 Not my friend Stephen, his home is beautiful!
I think the make over was needed, it made the home look more cared for. I'm not a fan of grey paint but it was better and cleaner than the dingy nicotine stained paint that he had. The kitchen was icky, it didn't suit the style of the house so that would have been a deal breaker for me.
Judging by the age of his cameras he either sold it or died in it by now.
92% of 699. is a huge discount. The house given its location, size and parking is worth the 699K.
+peggyt1243 I agree. You're talking about $50,000. That's not chump change.
+yesiownfrodo The episode was filmed over 2 years ago. In that time the house would have gone up in value about 200K. Toronto is still a hot market; prices are going to stabilize soon, maybe even drop a little.
Good thing he did not sell. The house would be over the 1 million mark now.
WTG George, you got them to come do up your house inside and out for free,,, clever George x
It's 3 years later. Wonder if it's still on the market. LOL!
Was wondering the same thing 🤔
Oh 2019
George may have the home overpriced as an excuse to himself of not leaving it. He really isn't sure he wants to move but is in the dream phase. Is there an update?
Would love to see the kitchen and bathrooms....
Added up with my yearly income it would take me 25 years of paying my whole entire years worth of pay to own this home. I've always been quite poor but have all I need. This house is one I dreamed of owning as child dreamer. I know live in 14 feet by 50 feet of space with my little boy. The cost to heat a home this big must years cost what I pay in 5 years. Reality sets in when you grown up lol
There is something that drives me crazy with people who seem to buy Victorians lately. They paint all the wood white!!!!!! If I buy a beautiful Victorian, it better have floors, doors, windows, crown molding, built in cupboards that are beautiful wood, the way they were originally!
Some victorians did not have natural dark wood. They had white enamel paint on all trim. Most had a dark green or red or blue for walls. They also had wall paper.
My aunt and uncle have owned their victorian for forty years. It had when they bought it; natural wood and beautiful Victorian wallpaper in it! They have keep it that way. Even though they have changed out most windows. The big picture window in the front they kept they were told to much risk changing it out because of paint on the outside has leaded paint under the new paint!
Tell them not to eat the paint chips.@@cherifew3485
Why are people barking on how smart George is getting himself some free renovation? I mean the program get a set for their show and since the house is beautiful people would enjoy watching it, so it's a win win for everyone.
It would help to remove the curtains and cloth items to help eliminate the smoke odor. The walls must also be cleaned. Removal of the exterior paint would help. The house should have remained original for a true admirer. George will not sell as is.
If I ever disliked gray I must say after this I hate it! Gray outside, gray inside? What gives? The living room was a beautiful pale yellow and the lighting made it glow! Now it's GRAY. Honestly, every room gray? If you want modern, buy modern, but leave a Victorian alone! Honestly I hate the style she did and mostly the ugly gray everywhere?
She said (around 14:01) it's supposed to be a sage green, but the variances in colour are not coming through on the video. At least the ceiling is yellow and different.
I liked the outside, but I agree that some people will be intimidated by it. Though I don't understand why.
But I hate the stuck on dragonflies. I think they are tacky.
+openyoureyes I love the gray, and if you accessorize the gray, you can change your color scheme every week! With that yellow, you are stuck. Besides, no one's skin looks good against yellow. And the exterior colors of bright blue and gold were horrible. I'm so glad that is gone. Gray is so hot right now, and frankly, it is the perfect neutral, no matter what your style.
+yesiownfrodo The color grey is depressing and just not for a Victorian house.
I am SO OVER the grey trend! Every 'o look at me, I'm doing over my ugly new house to look like a magazine spread' blogger does naught but slather varying shades of grey all over everything. I hate when they do bathrooms on The Fixer-Upper because that Joanna seems to be fixated on grey tiles everywhere - walls, floors, ceilings, showers - ugh. What's wrong with a bit of color these days? Everyone seems to want a cookie-cutter house that looks like everyone else's. I also hate it when people buy a lovely traditional home & start taking down walls to 'make it more open' - if you wanted an open floor plan house, then why didn't you buy one instead of destroying a nice one?
I agree with you totally! IF you want modern...BUY MODERN!
A long time after this was aired, but why leave the sitting room ceiling yellow! ?
Reminds me of this movie that just came out not too long ago (I for the name of it). The guy Charlie was acting as if he was selling his house and the people moved in and he was on the property still living there and had no intentions of moving out.😂Free house, Free Renovations 🤦🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️
I love the new make-over, fantastic job guys 🙌 George should keep it. 💗
A house is not unsellable when you have a homeowner who is unwilling to budge on the asking price and refuses to allow walk throughs. Don't blame the house, blame the stubborn homeowner,
5 minutes in and he’s like lol she’s going to decorate my house for me
I don't think the home is an offensive color at all. The trend at the time was Lady Liberty style and the home were decorated in vintage Lady Liberty Victorian paintings and posters. Hence the Colonial Blue. It's also Columbus Style with the gold. They were called Victorian Patriot Homes.
In Canada?
Yeah that's not quite colonial blue...
This house is in Toronto Ontario Canada. I don't think the Lady Liberty Victorian style was en vogue there at that time. Styles then would have taken after British customs.
The home was so lovely, I wouldn't sell it!
I'd be too busy gutting the kitchen and removing the gawd-awful paint from the front of the house...painted brick, pffffft. :D
hahaha he put his house on TV, got a makeover, and didn't end up selling it. I need to do that...
thank you for the correction; my bad on assuming. Still...I wonder if it could be done...
I find it strange that she thinks the house won’t sell because George hasn’t got the house decorated attractively. If I had been shown that house as a prospective buyer, I’d be imagining how I would decorate/furnish that little dressing room off the bedroom, etc., instead of how crappy his mattress looked sitting on the floor. You love the house for its features, not how the current owner has it furnished. He’s a bachelor, what did they expect??
If a person's house is that dirty it usually means they're not keeping up on maintenance, who wants to pay top dollar for a house that has possible hidden damage?
She turned a possibly great Victorian home into a drab and boring home. Sorry, It's blah. It doesn't look Victorian inside at all.
Yep Sure Did.I bought a Victorian 2 years ago and am keeping as much original as possible!
svagrod
Bless you my child :)
+Dianna Longoria She did not touch any of the trim or light fixtures. All that was done was painting so it is still Victorian.
*****
...I just despise that. It's like the Victorians in San Fransisco,The exterior is great but the insides are all gutted and modern. Why even get a Victorian if your going to do that.
It's a sin to take a great Victorian house and gut it! People like that should be shot! I will apply for the job!
I love your videos! So entertaining, educational and funny!
I bet he started smoking in it again right away.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Do people think they are buying the furniture too?
If someone looks at this home will buy it no matter what colors or what ever in the house . This lady is full of it .
I love the house! Quirks and all, but I understand not everyone would. And I could not afford this gem.
I agree! He just got himself a home makeover and you know he isn't going to sell it now! they don't mention that he has a wife or girlfriend probably because he is such a Greedy cheap skate!!
A Victorian to die for. It’s HUGE!
It would look much better with more of a balance between antique furniture and art and more modern ones.
It has lost it's wonderful character. No no no. There is no soul in this house now.
"come into the LITTLE sitting room" is not the way to go about selling. Duh.
What soul? It looked like an old broad who'd stopped plucking her chin hairs years ago, but still wore more face paint than Pennywise. (Mind you, the rehab did look a bit like an unconvincing face-lift, but at least it showed some effort.)
I would have purchased it as is. No changes required. I liked the colors . Absolutely gorgeous!
I remember watching this episode years ago. What happened to this show? I really liked it. Thanks for posting
UGH!!! I want this house. I wonder if he ever sold it? I love the decorating ideas.
Oh yeah you forgot to paint the parlor ceiling -you left it bright yellow. Again -FAIL!
Don't think he wants to sell it. It's a reason, excuse, that he hasn't achieved his DREAM of being a great photographer.
I love the work done on the inside but still like the blue color outside.
Had George delayed his sale by a few years, he'd have twice the money, oh well
She repainted the walls in the downstairs sitting rooms and totally forgot the ceilings, which remain a clashing color. Yuck.
that is exactly my first thought ....
I actually liked the ceiling that way it really doesn't clash the ceiling is a soft creamy with a hint of lemon the wall is sage ane there is white trim. The sage and lemony creme color go great together. It's not the first time ive seen the two colors together.
cheri few not everyone has that opinion, i find it like it been forgotten!!!

A very beautiful house…..turned into a very beautiful home.
the question mark above the bed is a little odd lol
An office in the bedroom?! Absolutely not. Surely there is at least 1 other room for that. I would have turned that little room into an incredible closet with lots of storage and shelving with a place for shoes.
Keep the house and vacation in s. America
I have been in Real Estate for 18 year's, and all these large real estate businesses have been around for many year's, but the Public still dosen't understand how it all work's!! Real Estate is a commodity, it dosen't make it worth more just because you own it! There are many factors that go into determining the VALUE of a property! Location, neighborhood, how old the house is and so on!A house that old more than likely has termite damage, and other problems could be learking in the house. It's best to have a home inspection before you list your house! This won't hold up the escrow.
Lurking
If he keeps smoking in the house, tell him to also keep baking soda in the ash trays.
bah. the new owners could have done all that or better. they'd probably buy it and change it all anyway. And I love how at the end it's all about what she did to make it a "nice use of space". They are buying what she did with the furniture??
Anaglypta! The wallpaper! I used it on a smooth wall, just because I like the look. Mine's a newer house than that.
room off the master should be a walk in closet..dressing room...with wood & mirror, something stylish & elegant. id have like a light sunlight yellow paint outside with the white trim..I find grey depressing, i'd like to see a dining room, & what did the kitchen look like?
that house is worth millions today
I love how it turned out. She was right. The colors were not bad but they were too bold for the neighborhood. If many other homes has exciting colors, sure, but they didnt so it left the house looking extra. The kitchen was sterile, if anything needed some accent, it was there. Its a beautiful house. Im sure someone snatched up before too long.
House was perfectly sellable before redo, hold out for the price you want they only go up up up every year, good on you George
They never showed the bathroom
I love Victorian houses but there are problems with them. First the pipes running in these houses are 3/4 inches and the high ceiling makes it a bear to heat the house.
What is the prob w the pipes 3/4?
Good idea as am office, I thought babies room attached to parents room , but more people would like an office.
Good for him - he got a free update and can live in it still
This is the type of show I miss on HGTV.
People need to ignore the layout of rooms as they walk through homes and use their own imagination. When I walk through a house for sale the personal items, furniture layout, decor, etc. do not bother me or even impact my decision on the property. Each person's idea of the function of each room varies so to say that the house needs more function while it is being used by an existing owner or resident should just go in one ear and out the other to potential buyers. Also, the exterior of the house is just fine. The colors go well together and it has a unique look which makes it more valuable than the cookie cutter colors of the other homes.
Oh on. The exterior was diminished in quality and went from fab to drab.
He was really smart getting his house done for free and then not selling it I think that's what he wanted all along. He said he wanted to go abroad to take pictures but what then, he doesn't seem like a talented guy and at some point money will be gone and he won't have a home, just didn't sound right to me.
I wish someone would come and fix up my apartment so I could live in cool surroundings. I am trying myself to do what I can but when you suffer from Scoliosis putting furniture together and painting is not something you can do. I wish I lived in GB as they have so much old stuff I would love to turn into something nice:)
