- Don't buy both of these!!! Sony 20-70mm F4 vs 24-105mm F4
Ofcourse the new Sony 20-70mm F4 lens is a brilliant lens but is the Sony 24-105mm F4 a better choice? What are your thoughts? Realistically it is always the right tool for the right job and these two lenses have different focal lengths which means it isn't exactly apples to apples.

great job buddy I concur with your assessments I paired my 24-105 with my A7IV along with my 50mm 1.2GM that's probably 90% of my shots
Really hope there will be an FE 24-105 F4 II with XD motors, improved optics, and aperture ring. OSS is what I want for the FX6.
Agree
lighter
17-85mm 2.8
Are they updating it? That would be great? Hopefully not $3-4,000 like the new Canon 24-105 2.8. 😅
I tried out 5 different copies of the 24-105 G (used and new ones) because I was looking for an extended zoom with OSS (so the choice is already minimal).
However, none of these copies were convincing because all of them had the same issues:
1) Heavy CAs, really bad. You could see them very clearly without even zooming in.
2) Zoom ring was stuttering every few mm, you couldn't really move it smoothly. It would go from 24 to 35 and from there to 50 okayish, keep a bit stuck here and there, and from 70 upwards it became even heavier. This felt like a very cheap lens, not like a 1200+€ lens.
3) The focus ring was awful. No resistance, very light. This is not usable outdoors, it doesn't give you any precise control.
4) IQ is okay, but both the Tamron 28-200 and the 28-75 (G1 and 2) are better and let in more light at a lower price, a lower weight and a smaller form factor.
5) OSS didn't really make a difference, so it's not really an aspect you could write on the side of "reasons to buy the lens".
When I need a wider angle than 20mm, I rely on the Voigtlander Super Wide-Heliar 15mm f/4.5 Aspherical III. For close-up shots, I use the FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS. However, the FE 20-70mm f/4 G is my go-to zoom lens for most situations. It's the best zoom lens I've ever owned and it's perfectly suited to my needs.
Ive had the the Sony 24-70 4 for docu style shooting and there have been so many times where i just needed a little extra reach (aside from clear image zoom)
I wish i had the Sony 24-105 4
I have overcome this problem with the A7CR. I finally came to the realization that I can use that sensor in more than one way and that means I can crop heavily and still maintain excellent quality. The 24-105 is a good, heavy lens. I'd buy one used as it is an older lens. It produces excellent image quality though the 20-70 is more versatile and better suited for compact bodies like the A7C series. If you need more reach, there's the 70-200 f4 with macro features. One lens cannot suit all needs. Unfortunately, there are always tradeoffs. I have both lens and I prefer to use the newer one more than the larger and heavier one. You can always go crop mode and turn the 20-70 to stretch out to 105mm. This is the reason I chose the A7CR over the A7CII. It is far more versatile.
Really appreciate this comparison, especially from a content creator that promotes new products. It’s sooo refreshing to hear someone say that you dont really need this “new” gear if you are using something already that works. There will be some folks that want that wide 20mm, but most will be just fine with the 24. Thx for all u do!!
thank you for commenting this
"My mathematics sucks and I'm Asian." I definitely feel you on that 😂
hahahahahahaha
I had the 24-105, the Sigma 24-70 and just got the 20-70 F4. To me is the best of them all for traveling.
Which one is the best?
Good video, but you didn't mention weight unless I missed that part. I have the 24-105 and it's a heavy beast. The 20-70 looks smaller so is probably lighter.
it is noticaable lighter
I’ve got the 24-105 f/4 and the 20-70 on order and I might just keep both of them. The 24-105 is a great all around lens on my FX6 due to the stabilization, like you said.
the 24-105mm legit is a game changer for the FX6 mainly because of the OSS
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema I was SO hoping that the 24-70 f/2.8 GM II would have OSS to compete with the Canon 24-70 RF, but apparently they went for lightweight instead.
@@KevinFedde oh man I feel that pain! I really really really would pay some big coin for that fast zoom lens with OSS for the FX6 and run and gun work
The 24-70 F4 is 1600 € in Germany. Kinda expensive
Ive been shooting the 24-105 on my A7R2 for about 2 years now and it's absolutely amazing! Not only does it take great photos but Its a fantastic Video shooter! I love that lens so much it's tough to put my new Sony 85mm 1.8 which is great too on my camera lol...just goes to show you how awesome Sony is at making these premium lens ....great video bro
Maybe a new 24-105 f2.8-f4 variable aperture
Thanks for the comparison Jason, amazing video! Makes me feel better about my Sony 24-105 F4 :D
Although I mostly use the 35 1.4 GM I still keep the 24-105 F4 as an allrounder with me. Despite F4 24-105 is still the jack of all trades and the master of none zoom focal length in my opinion.
F4 zooms in general just don't spark joy. Maybe 70-200, but that's it and i wouldn't use that one in low light.
Have the A7cii so wanted a smaller do it lens. Went with the 20-70mm lens
I feel like the new 20-70mm F/4 lens is more for videographers than photographers. That wide angle shot can help out with cropped mode and active steady-shot. I would rather use the 20-70mm lens since its newer and has a liner motor compare to the 24-105mm direct motor. I'm also not sure if OSS works together with the camera because when testing it out, I didn't notice any changes to the videos. Sony's camera already has 5.5 steps of ibis, adding a lens with OSS should add 1 more step to it to make it at least 6.5 steps of ibis. For sure on non-ibis cameras like a6400 and FX6, the OSS will help greatly. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with either lenses and will just depend on your needs. Having that extra 71-105mm reach is great for both photo and video compare to an extra 4mm in the wide section.
I would agree. Certainly is a versatile lens. Most people just love going for faster lenses in photography
If it was geared for videographers, I feel it should have OSS and PZ. I really wish the 20-70 had at least OSS as I’d consider it for video work (fx6 use case).
@@bwest6275 No, its not needed. Adding OSS and Power Zoom would make the lens heavier as sony is likely wanting a lighter lens. I do think Sony should make a 20-105mm F/2.8 with Power Zoom and OSS in the future. The lens will be heavier and if most videographer are going to use shoulder rigs and tripods, then they can add lens support brackets to hold that lens.
Well bro I've done it sold all my lumix gear and pulled the trigger in a Sony A7sIII :)
And you are happier with the Sony? Heard a lot of good things about Lumix S5II X
You told that 24-105 is not too sharp compare to 20-70 ... But the funny part is that in My tests 24-105 was sharper than 24-70 f2.8 GM 😂😅 especially on 70-105 f4 vs 70 f2.8 🤯 btw thats a such an interesting lens and great focal range. To love ❤❤ ... Some day!
Thanks for this video sir, I'm from India, searching in my language (Tamil) there was no more clear video like this, I'm managed with the subtitles and you clearly explained the Len's and the cost of both Len's like 24-70 f2.8, 24-105 f4 & 20-70 f4, I had no idea abt oss, am planned to take 24-70 f2.8 its even costly, but finally Im end with an idea that, go with 24-105 f4 G & buy if we need wider Len's like in Tamron Len's, its more worth then having an single lens that(24-70 f2.8)... Thank you, am subscribed to ur channel after this comment, Love from India❤🇮🇳
Appuram enna achu..endha lens vanguneenga😊
As someone who uses the Tamron 20-40 2.8 for gimbal work. I think the 20-70 F4 is a great lens to replace it. But i use the 20-40 in crop mode which gives me a 30-60mm
Not worried about the F4, with the FX3, i am always at F4-8 anyways..
I just use the 20 1.8 for photo work nowadays..
I use my a7III's 99% for photography, and have been very happy with the 24-105 as my all-purpose lens. _Maybe_ if I was just getting into the game I would consider the new lens, but I have the Sigma 14-24 F2.8 for when I need a wider field of view.
Exact same setup here with my A7IV.
Your logic seems sound to me. I already have the Sony 16-35mm f4 OSS, Sony 20mm f1.8, Tamron 20-40mm f2.8 and Voigtlander 40mm f1.2. The longer end I'm lacking... comes down to can I manage with just 70mm (I have both APS-C and Full Frame) or should I go for the 24-105mm f4 OSS. That OSS is pretty attractive to me. My cameras have IBIS and earlier non-IBIS so my use cases are pretty diverse. The prices for the 20-70mm and 24-105mm are not that far apart in my market.
Image quality is the main concern. The quality of the "glass".(BUT within a limited budget). Unnecessary features are secondary. That's why I'm here. Btw - Maybe it's just me but it would help a lot if, when you pick up a lens and begin to talk about it, you would identify which lens you are talking about. I keep losing track of which lens (is in your hand) as you are talking about it. Just saying, mate.
Sigma 24-70 is also a great option and cheaper than all of these
absolutely
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema does it perform well when it comes to smooth and quick autofocus? Kind regards
Great comparison, thanks for sharing all the great info👍🏽
thanks my bro. Appreciate you dropping in
Thanks for the video! Exactly the one that I have been waiting for! Cheers!👍
thanks for watching
I actually have them both and it’s probably unnecessary to have both. I flit from one to the other depending on what I’m shooting but I have to say, I’m really not sure which one I’d get rid of. The 20-70 is better but sometimes the 24-105 is more useful.
My mathematics sucks - and I am asian.... made my day. Thanks.
For me most of the Fotos are in 35-105 so this is not a question. In Germany the 24-105 is cheaper than the other lens. the 20-70 is optically better but has some more digital correction. On a 60MP Sony you can crop the 20-70 so you have 105 if you need it by losing some resolution but not sharpness. the 20-70 is more compact and is sharper and more contrasty. 24-105 has OSS which has advantages for filming. However, when using super35 it is not wide enough. I will go for the 33MP body with the 24-105. and use a 16-28 for the wide part.
Hey, love your content! Wbats this website you are using to see the prices?
Thanks for this video! Great info!
thanks steve
Great info thank you 🙏
The 24-105 OSS lens doesn't allow A7IV to use any stabilising except OSS alone, even switched off on the lens. It says 'invalid with this lens'. Considering OSS gives jumpy and jarring lurches on pan/tilt moves, it's not good for handheld video. Sony should update firmwares so the A7IV can do IBIS/IBIS+active with the lens OSS off, because thats mean.
Please update latest in this regard. Thanks.
I saw other reviews where Sony 24-105mm has much better parfocal-like properties than 20-70mm. Is this not a deception?
The 20-70mm has the new XD linear focus motors which should keep it more parfocal
Now we need a 13-50 f4 for apsc.
Hi , have you tried Tamron 20-40 f2.8
It's lightest and fastest len can capture beautiful footages of wedding.
Yeah if sony made a GM of that I would cop. The 20mm is the sweet spot for wides
Now coming back to this video, since a used 24-105 is around $750 vsthe 20-70 in the $1000 range would you think one still has a better value over the other?
I have the Canon R6 Mark II and R7. I’m heavily debating on switching to either an A7SIII and A7IV or two A7IVs. I’m tired of Canon limiting their cameras and lenses and want the greatest low light and dynamic range performance. What would you recommend I do? Switch to Sony or stick to my current cameras?
honestly the biggest draw back that I see with canon at the moment is limiting their mount! crazy that they did this
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema Would you recommend the A7SIII or the FX3 for an A cam?
@@jackpatmoreinc if you don’t use the EVF- FX3 for the win
Nice and beautiful work, i have A7Cll, can i get stabilization benefits if i got 24-105 OSS please?
Hey man! 18-105 is less than half price 20-70 one in my country. Do you think 20-70 is worth for me to pay more than double? Or should I stick with 18-105
Hi Jason, and thanks so much for this. It's just what I'm needing right now. My question to you. I'm traveling to Portugal this year and I want to pick the best all around lens to take with my Sony A7r III. I already have the Sony/Zeiss 24-70mm f4. You mentioned if you already had the 24-105 you would keep that. I had that lens and loved it but ended up selling it and keeping the 24-70. What would be your advice here? Keep the 24-70 for this trip? Trade for the 20-70 or even the 24-105 for this trip that will be mostly landscape photography in Algarve Portugal? How would you go? THANKS!!!
Wonder if I already have the Sony 24 to 240mm that the 20 to 70mm might be a better option for me?
What about comparing the 20-70mm f4 to Tamron’s 20-40mm f/2.8?
Ithe 24-105 t's not as sharp as a prime but it's a perfect street portrait lens, 85 to 105 is perfect for portraits
Thoughts: Tamron 17-70 2.8 APSC lens on an FX3 would give you would give you an equivalent of a 25.5-105mm 2.8 lens??!!
Yes, but you'll slightly have less sharper images and video
Weight is the issue for many.
understandbly
The 24-105mm is more versatile.
This lens suitable for apsc camera
Fx30.. ?
24 -105 g f4
Great review Jason!
thank you
Funny thing about the price in Hungary (Europe) is, that you can get the Sony 24-105mm F4 AND the Sony 20mm 1.8 for the price of the Sony 20-70mm F4.
Who is going to buy one lense if you can get two for the same price and get better range and performance?! That's just insane.
It is very interesting that the price varies so much from country to country
nice video, can we have another one about 20-70 vs Tamron 28-200?
just buy tamron 28-75 bro
that's tough because they are wildly different focal lengths
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema I want to get both, but afraid they are overlapped. Maybe not really that overlapped. Because I’ve watched many videos about Tamron 28-200 vs 24-105 G, and 20-70 is now compared to 24-105 G, 20-70 might be comparable to 28-200 in a way.
@@superleeeemon I think your best bet is to get the Tamron 28-200 and then maybe a wide prime lens
有 FE 24-105 F4 II
why should anyone buy both of these? they are almost the same. Is this a joke i dont get?
Don’t buy either, pick up the Tamron 28-200 f2.8-5.6.
I own both the 24-105 and the 20mm f1.8. I love the idea of the xd linear motors for focus, edge to edge sharpness and the best in class focus breathing compensation. However, I am really debating to get the 16-35 pz or perhaps the 14mm G Master first. Oh and I’m interested in real estate videography. I am leaning towards the 16-35. What do you think? I am more video focused than anything else.
Wait for 16-35 GM II
potentially wait for a 16-35mm GM successor
I use the 16-35 FE PZ with my FX6 and it’s super compact and works a great for handheld work. It’s hard to beat if you need a video-Centric lens since it has PZ.
Sony please build a 20-60mm f2.8!!!!
Jesus. It'll be over 1.5kgs heavy
Tamron's 20-40 f2.8 with clear image zoom is basically that
@@RyanKorea clear image zoom you lose eye auto focus though
The old Zeiss zoom footage looked better than the new Sony 20-70...
👍😄👍
How cheap are these lenses in Australia 😂😂can’t believe it. 😬
the 20-70mm Sure isn't budget down under
@@JasonMorrisphotocinema ok. It’s around 1600€ prerelease in GER.
@@MrPSt86 whoa yeah that’s significant
I think this 2 lens don't need to be compared. Not the same. 24-105 f4 g 2 comes this year. That will be better than the old one, they can be compared. Moreover I think 24-105 f4 will always be an all round lens, moreover oss is better than active stabilization which gives you a crop, so 20mm won't be 20mm on your 20-70 f4 g lens.
They aren't the same but a massive amount of people are thinking about selling their 24-105mm to get this. So I wanted to clarify the differences and why you may need one or the other
When do we expect the 24-105 FE II? That’s what I’m waiting for 🙂
