It's that one moment where he finally loses his composure as Claire is about to walk away that does it for me every time. Literally the most heartbreaking thing I've ever seen in any video game.
+Gorfinhofin me too. this scene makes me sad every time. and the one in the last spectre

My first Layton game, which I just finished yesterday. This tore my heart out, threw it on the ground, and smashed it into tiny pieces. Thank you, Level 5 ;-;
When the credits rolled, I applauded and cried. That's right, I applauded my Nintendo DSi. First time I've ever done that. Layton really captures the emotions!
As the man who kept his composure as he lost so many close to him-to see him finally break... it's terrifying almost. He can't stay strong. He hides his pain.
I gotta say, the teary, puppydog-eyed Layton really got me crying, and then HE TOOK OFF HIS HAT, then I cried a friggin ocean. T^T The song really does it for me too. :'
@RAKSTAR1991 Same here Seeing Layton break out of his normally cool and calm demeanor to say that he doesn't want to say goodbye to Claire again really did it for me here.
*sniff* You know what really makes this sad? The fact that this is the first time Layton has EVER gotten emotional over something. The ending to Diabolical Box tore me apart, but he was fine. But here since he's losing Claire... it's different. And this is the first time he's taken his hat off. :')
damn i cried my whole heart after i saw this scene........... Even if you are a gentleman.....no man or gentleman could ever withstand the pain of losing the girl that you love dearest. For layton to lose his girl twice in one lifetime.....that is the most painful thing to go through....only time can ever truly heal a person's wounded heart.
When Professor Layton takes his hat off, and cries at the same time, you know it's got to be REALLY SERIOUS. I watched this scene earlier on my DS, I actually cried when the music kikced in when she said 'Goodbye', That was the part that was the strongest for me.
See, this is a good ending to a Layton game. Curious village's ending was happy(ish), diabolical box was kinda sad, but this one takes the cake. It made my cry for a while when Clair left, but then Layton started crying. I mimicked him exactly. I finished the game 15 minutes ago.
Every single freakin time I see this scene, my heart breaks and I start crying! Oh, how I wish I could be there to comfort the Professor...he didn't deserve all of this pain...and it breaks my heart every time I see it in his eyes...all of the pain and sadness...Oh Lord, I'm crying again! T.T
I just played this game and... I started crying when Clair told Hershel that she was Clair and didn't stop crying until the last puzzle :/ GAAAAAAAME! why you make me cry like a little baby??
Man...I was such a mess after I played this game... Poor Layton. Having to see his girfriend go twice. They were so cute together. And I always thought that Layton wore his hat because he was a gentleman, which he is, but now after this game, I realized that he wore it all the time because Claire told him to not take it off. And that was the last time he saw her...before that unfortunate event.
This is so sad... Layton loved Claire. Man, if I was the Professor, I would stop Claire after she said goodbye. And CyNz999, OF COURSE HE HAS HAIR!! Didn't you see the 7th scene? The over-the-shoulder Layton shots show the back of his head. HE HAS HAIR!
In a story that I haven't wrote yet, after layton says "YOU CAN'T GO!" He yells at the top of his lungs "I LOVE YOU!" Then they have a little display of romance, which mother nature sees, and the mother nature decides to let claire stay. Then she says, "but if anything like this happens to you again, I won't cancel it."
To paraphrase Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons: "Best. Cutscene. Ever." Seriously, considering this may be (it's been a while) the only time in the series that he took off his hat intentionally (which is slightly ironic ["So no taking it off." -Claire]) Great music, great visuals, great voice acting, great EVERYTHING. Also, it is amusing that she used his catchphrase: "After all, that's what a gentleman does." REALLY sad moment. Stupid character limit... I could rant on this for years!
@yamba01 I'm pretty sure that when Claire goes back to the past, she is specifically going back to the exact moment when the time machine explodes, because that was her entry point into the future to begin with. Unless...the makers of the games decide to have Claire somehow survive the accident when she travels back to her own time and reunite with Layton (in a future game).
There would be no way for her to live. It's impossible to save the death from their fate by traveling through the time and since the past can't be changed Claire has no choice but to go back.
@xKatjax14 There's no future claire because she's dead in the past. When she died, the time machine accident she was involved in sent a portion of her 10 years into the future, but her molecular structure won't let her stay there...obviously :P
This is really sad. Luke did you not hear the whole conversation? "Professor! She's gone!" Uuhhh... yes Luke, that's what the whole "I have to go" thing was for!
The sad thing about this scene is that once Claire vanishes, she gets transported back to the past right before the explosion kills her. Layton just saw Claire before she officially dies. That's pretty sad...
Dammit. I cry easy at these games... I cry at Anton and Katia in Pandora's Box... I cry at Loosha and Anrrianna's angst in the Spectre's Call... NOW THIS! *cries*
Cried so hard at this. ;_; Why did she have to go....it was all Bill's fault in this game, if he hadn't of gone on with the experiment, Claire would have lived. They really should sue him >:I
Saddest cutscene in any game I ever played. At least they didn't say "I love you" otherwise a lot more people would be crying harder. Second time I've watched this scene and it's still hard to hold back tears T_T
This scene is the first thing in a video game to make me cry. And I'm a girl--and a pretty sentimental one at that. It's also one of my favorite scenes overall in a game. Professor Layton is such a cool character, but my favorite moments in these games are when he loses his cool. I think that might be why this scene is so sad. This character who can fly his car off of a giant death machine without so much as batting an eye is now in shambles.
日本人のためにグーグルで 「私は!…私今まで…ずっとキミの事を…!」を日本語にしてきた! You CAN,T go! 「あなたは、行くことができます!」 I don't want to say Good-bye again. 「私は、さよならをもう一度言いたくありません」 I can,t I won,t 「私はできません」 ……?
Damn it, they actually changed most of the words from this scene, and replaced the background song with a less depressing intrumental version of it. I couldn't watch the Japanese version of this scene without sheding a tear, yet this dubbed version didn't tug at my emotions at all. I'll put the Japanese translation of this scene in a reply to this message.
@LeilaisCRAZY12 I'm aware that she will return to the point of the explosion, and of her decision not to try and save herself, but I'm not a fan of the idea of ignoring wonderous oppourtunies because of "disasterous consequences." It reminded me of TMNT, where the immortal billionaire wanted to die because he thought being immortal "was a curse." Maybe it is, but no one can truly know that unless they try it. In it's defense, time travel does have the issue of it falling into the wrong hands.
@ChibiGunner Well I live in England and the game doesn't come out over here until October 22nd, so maybe when I play it and see this scene in its intended context, I'll end up crying as much as I did at the end of the 2nd game (which was the first game to ever make me cry).
If Claire goes back to before the explosion, wouldn't she just get transported through time over and over again? IDK, doesn't seem that it works like that though haha.
Me: **starting to cry** **PROFESSOR TAKES OFF HIS HAT** Me: **stops tearing up** :D OMG I feel kind of bad for not crying just because he took off his hat XD
Maybe it's because I saw the Japanese version of this scene first, but I liked that one better. At least they tried to sound like the Japanese voice actors in this one. :P Thank you very much for posting this!
1:05 Professor Layton NEVER freaks out. My god, what a powerful scene. Poor Layton. T.T
Layton: You saw your girlfriend die once? That's cute.
It's that one moment where he finally loses his composure as Claire is about to walk away that does it for me every time. Literally the most heartbreaking thing I've ever seen in any video game.
Me: *cries*
My brother: are you crying?
Me: no there's something in my eye
Brother: what?
Me: TEARS!!!
undertale?
when she said "Our Unwound Future" my head exploded D:
I prefer the line in the European version: "You won't forget, will you? Our shared past, and our lost future?"
+Gorfinhofin me too. this scene makes me sad every time. and the one in the last spectre
My first Layton game, which I just finished yesterday. This tore my heart out, threw it on the ground, and smashed it into tiny pieces. Thank you, Level 5 ;-;
I always cry at the ending of the Layton games (so far.) its so sad, since he is normally so calm, and to see him freak out gets me crying.
Manly Tears...so many manly tears were shed. I can watch this over and over again and still cry. :(
I gotta say, the teary, puppydog-eyed Layton really got me crying, and then HE TOOK OFF HIS HAT, then I cried a friggin ocean. T^T The song really does it for me too. :'
OMG SCREW THE LOVE AND CLAIRE STUF HE TOOK OFF HIS HAT!!!! *tears up* oh mi gosh dat hair :'D
Aww prof layton is cute here, somehow his eyes got bigger when he's crying. Nice hair :D
You can tell the exact moment that his heart breaks
@RAKSTAR1991 Same here
Seeing Layton break out of his normally cool and calm demeanor to say that he doesn't want to say goodbye to Claire again really did it for me here.
*sniff* You know what really makes this sad? The fact that this is the first time Layton has EVER gotten emotional over something. The ending to Diabolical Box tore me apart, but he was fine. But here since he's losing Claire... it's different. And this is the first time he's taken his hat off. :')

What are you all looking at me for? I'M ONLY CHOPPING ONIONS, DAMN IT.
So depressing knowing she goes back in time just to die ;-;

Oh my gosh, I always cry. It's so hard not to. I don't think I've ever experienced this much emotion from a video game.

WOAH WOAH WOAH
WAIT
LAYTON HAS EYEBROWS???!!!
Only time we see Layton without his hat on.
Miracle Mask, Azran Legacy.
"A true gentleman never take his hat off" You broke your gentleman rules Hershel!!
Three words are needed to describe this scene. You will cry.
I'm not crying, I'm chopping onions...
this scene is really damn sad but at least now I know how Hershel's hair look like
I love the music, this was my favourite track on the sondtrack
This scene is so sad!! I cry everytime I watch it! Crying doesn't even describe it, more like sobbing! Poor Layton :"(
I just played this game and... I started crying when Clair told Hershel that she was Clair and didn't stop crying until the last puzzle :/ GAAAAAAAME! why you make me cry like a little baby??
A true gentleman uses his sleeve to wipe away tears.
Man...I was such a mess after I played this game... Poor Layton. Having to see his girfriend go twice. They were so cute together. this is the first time ive seen layton without his hat
I AM NEVER GOING TO BE OKAY WITH THIS. -cries forever-
omfg poor layton i haven't even played this game and i sorta teared up
To paraphrase Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons: "Best. Cutscene. Ever." .....wow hershals hair looks.......... EPIC...... but still very sad poor professor
finally i see him cry, so sad T_T
finally he reveals his top hat. So he does have hair
I don't get why that i cry when teh professor cries, but ROFLOLMFAO when Luke cries.
@yamba01

maaan no matter how many times i watch it. i cry EVERYtime :'((
RIP Akira Tago 1926-2016
He's gone!? How!?
+Samuel Joseph pneumonia
[pap roach voice] rip my heart into pieces
Romance in video games these days are so fucking rare.
There would be no way for her to live. It's impossible to save the death from their fate by traveling through the time and since the past can't be changed Claire has no choice but to go back.
I thought the ending of Diabolical Box was sad, until now. God, I haven't cried THIS hard over a video game ending since...well...ever.
LAYTON:DAMN U CLAIRE(THROWS HAT ON GROUND AND STOMPS ON IT)
I've played this game so many times, and I cry so hard every single time this part comes around. D,;>
@xKatjax14 There's no future claire because she's dead in the past. When she died, the time machine accident she was involved in sent a portion of her 10 years into the future, but her molecular structure won't let her stay there...obviously :P

So. All of my feels. i had no idea what to do with them during this scene
Dammit. I cry easy at these games... I cry at Anton and Katia in Pandora's Box... I cry at Loosha and Anrrianna's angst in the Spectre's Call... NOW THIS! *cries*
... Manly tears were shed. My god, they were shed. T______T
is the first time in all of the games you see layton with a mix of emotions like sadness and angryy to epic :DD
Crying Layton makes me wanna weep T-T
poor professor layton, he doesn't deserve that :(
MY most favorite scene.
I cried at this part. I cried a lot.
awwww poor Professor *hugs Professor*
I was weeping when I saw this T^T I still get teary...
BUT WTF IS WITH THE MUSIC?! it's so like...happy...IT MAKES NO SENSE!!!
Cried so hard at this. ;_;
Why did she have to go....it was all Bill's fault in this game, if he hadn't of gone on with the experiment, Claire would have lived.
They really should sue him >:I
This scene is so sad I can't stop crying every time I watch it. Of the three DS games translated The unwound future is the best one.
Saddest cutscene in any game I ever played.
At least they didn't say "I love you" otherwise a lot more people would be crying harder.
Second time I've watched this scene and it's still hard to hold back tears T_T
*Crying so hard she's chewing her headphones*
I love Luke a lot and he's my favorite character, but even I thought he shouldn't have been in this scene.
If she was smart, the moment she landed back in the past, she'd start running like mad.
This scene is the first thing in a video game to make me cry. And I'm a girl--and a pretty sentimental one at that. It's also one of my favorite scenes overall in a game. CRYING FOREVER ;_;
This sceene. I cried for 30 minutes.

*SNIFFLES*
BOO HOO!!
I'm at my friends house, hiding my face. I can't stop crying..
Man I hope they pull some weird ass plot twist! They NEED to save Claire! D:
I want a Professor Layton... and a Luke to go with it... that would be so awesome.
@TheMystogan1 Thanks! And I actually did manage to find it :) So cute, but sad and not much different. Lol can't wait for new game in October!
Damn it, they actually changed most of the words from this scene, and replaced the background song with a less depressing intrumental version of it. LAYTON:DAMN U CLAIRE(THROWS HAT ON GROUND AND STOMPS ON IT) PS I STILL THINKS ITS EMOTIONAL
my sister told me that under his hat was a master puzzle challenge
LIAR
it was love ;-;
Diabolical/Pandora's Box is also a brilliant game.
If Claire goes back to before the explosion, wouldn't she just get transported through time over and over again?
IDK, doesn't seem that it works like that though haha.
Made me cry...
Me: **starting to cry**
**PROFESSOR TAKES OFF HIS HAT**
Me: **stops tearing up** :D OMG
I feel kind of bad for not crying just because he took off his hat XD
All the feels....
@LeilaisCRAZY12 the lost future line is more heart breaking than the unwound future one
claire : i suppose this it hershel
and also MY EYES ARE BURNING!! T___T
Does anyone else think Claire looks pretty with her hair down?
Maybe it's because I saw the Japanese version of this scene first, but I liked that one better.
At least they tried to sound like the Japanese voice actors in this one. :P
Thank you very much for posting this!
aaaaw poor Professor :(
this is so sad....I nearly cried.....AND I HAVEN'T EVEN PLAYED ANY OF THE GAMES *starts crying heavily*
OH MY GOD. ITS LAYTON. WITHOUT HIS HAT.
and i havnt played the game yet...lol
