He didn't immediately accept her death and move on... he spent a long while afterwards tirelessly investigating the circumstances surrounding her death. He only stopped after his life was threatened in multiple ways. Then he eventually moved away from it, becoming a great professor and mentor, while still holding on to her gifted hat. I was just on a thread talking about video game music and someone brought up the Layton series. I played every game (and own the DVD movie too) and him mentioning the music made me come back and listen to the wonderful ost
Such an amazing game and very under-appreciated series. Thank you Level-5 for giving this gift of a series to us. It is something to be commended and revered for years to come. The fact that just this song makes me remember all the puzzles and little moments I had with the games is truly something that earns this song the title of Time Travel.
I just replayed the game after years, and I cried like a baby. I thought it wasn’t going to affect me as much, but it did. Probably a combination of the nostalgia and memories I have of the game, with the experience of loss that everyone goes through. Beautiful series.
I've never played the Professor Layton games, but I know all that happens in the unwound future. When this music played when Claire left, it was an incredible moemnt. I hadn't felt emotionally attached to a video game character since Ellie in The Last of Us. And again, I haven't played this game. That's how powerful this song and scene is.
I haven't played this game in years and this song still manages to get to me. Guess that says a lot about the ending of this game :) I really hope we at least get one more trilogy for this series.

Why does this theme have to be so amazing? I can't stop listening it and thinking about the amazing journey that was the first Professor Layton trilogy
I'll admit. This game was my very first Layton game because it was recommended to me. I wasn't even super attached to the characters or knew them super well at the time and this ending STILL hurt and made me cry. Couldn't listen or think about this song without wanting to burst into tears. What the hell!!! They didn't have to destroy me like that. Anyway, the Layton games are masterpieces just like everyone here has said before. Best puzzle games I've ever played.
I listened to this as I was leaving behind my truly close and best friends at university. Never fails to bring me back to that moment of sad departure. To me, it’s the closest pain I could feel to Layton saying goodbye to Claire again. At the very least though, I can still meet with my friends at some point in the future
Whenever I think "poor Clyde," I then think, "Poor everyone whose home was destroyed by his killer robot." Heck, with a robot of that size in the middle of London, I wouldn't be surprised if some people actually were killed by that thing. Poor Clyde, but the game kind of glossed over all the damage he did.
I've always come back to Layton music because it takes me back. But recently I've been listening to this, Iris, and Surely Someday because of an unfortunate heartbreak, and it's helped me even now, if only I could tell 6 year old me how influencial this series would've been on his life.
This was the first game and I think still the only game that has managed to make me cry. The ending of this game made me feel so many emotions and I will never forget it for that.
Just ended things with my boyfriend of 6 years. When I played this game when I was younger (I was like 10 LMAO), I couldn't fully grasp the concept of how painful it is to see your lover leave twice. I knew it was painful but I also just couldn't cry. I believe that when I replay this game again, I'll definitely cry. Thanks for the wonderful 6 years, J. I'll miss you and our unwound future. Should the time and universe permit it, I will definitely give us another chance.
The UK version is even more heart-wrenching. as she's fading away "we had so many plans........ you won't forget, will you?..... Our shared past..... and our...... lost future....."
This ending and the one from diabolical box just destroyed me emotionally. Only listening to time travel (and Iris) alone is enough to instantly make me cry again.
No game breaks my heart like this does, such an amazing Ending, and it really does not receive the credit it so obviously deserves as an amazing installment to an already amazing franchise... Forever in our hearts, the Professor Layton games!
Single-handedly the best ending in the entire series. Absolutely nothing compares. This ending was incredibly emotional, and an amazing way to end the first trilogy. I am a little disappointed that no other games met this one's emotional standards, but this ending was heart-wrenching, tear-jerking, and I can definitively say that over 90% of the people who played this game cried at this ending. I wasn't one of them, but my sister was. But I digress. This ending was the best in the series. There is no game in the series with a better ending than this one.
Claire: I suppose this is it, Hershel. I have to go back to my own time. Back to that day when we parted… Layton: No, Claire… Claire: I'm sorry I can't stay. (embraces and kisses Layton, then turns away) Layton: Claire, wait! Claire: (starts glowing) We had so many…plans for the future. Do you remember, Hershel? I'll miss you…and our…unwound future. Layton: …You CAN'T go! Claire: (gasps) Layton: I don't want to say goodbye again! I CAN'T, I WON'T!!! Claire: I know you…and I know you'll stay strong. After all…that's what a gentleman does. I must go now, Hershel. Thank you for everything. Goodbye. (turns away and walks behind a building as this song starts up) Luke: (notices and runs toward Claire, but finds nothing there) …She's gone! Layton: (turns away, weeps, and removes his hat as screen pans out and snow falls. Roll credits)
I have this game on the Nintendo DS like the cartridge and i finished the game 3 times but since i unlocked the bonuses section i keep going back to the ending cutscene just to remember how good the story writing was.... I had to play this game multiple times to realise that this game is not about getting every puzzle right n that its about the emotion that the story writters put into this masterpiece.. Layton didnt deserve this 😢
What's sad about this ending is everyone loses. Layton, Claire, Luke, Dimitri, Clive and those who got affected by Clive's shenanigans. Only Bill Hawks, who started this mess is the only one not getting a genuine karma. Only thing he got is a subtle commentary from Inspector Chelmey.
@VGmaster153 It really is an amazing series. The first one had me emotional simply because the way the game played and the way you were introduced and got to know these characters was wonderful. I had never seen that before in a game and didn't want it to end. The second game was more just developing the characters, and had a sad cute story along with it that didn't really involve the main characters. The third one, man, what an excellent way to end. Layton and Luke, easily some of the best.
I finished this game 2 weeks ago and I absolutely love this song, the ending was so sad.. Then they had to top it off with Luke leaving Layton and getting on the ship.. (THE FEELSSss ;_; )
The story in pure tragedy... listening to this theme HURTS.. knowing the backstory of everything throughout the series, especially this one. It HURTS REAL BAD.
Every single Professor Layton game has made me cry. They each have their own single, beautiful, tear-jerking story. I can't fucking wait for Mask of Miracle. This is my favorite series, and after all the shit I went through to buy and beat the games, you can bet I'd go through it all again just for this series.
I love the photos in the credits. How it over looks their adventures together. Like the part were luke is packing his stuff and theres a layton mask a chelmey mask a flora mask etc. He likes to collect faces doesnt he?
In my headcanon, Claire stays stuck 10 years in the future, with the guilt, thst out of sll the victims, she survived as the only one. Even though she lives hsppy with Layton snd grows old, she will have this guilt forever.
Thanks for uploading mate! I was looking for this one. Really emotional. I still cry when I see the ending, and feel kinda heartbroken if you know what I mean; just so sad :( Damn, they really know how to write an awesome story!
Every single time I come back here and play this song, the feeling of a blue Christmas night suddenly appears in my mind. Just like that night - the night Mr.Layton took his hat off!!! Love Layton saga!
*Layton starts to tear up,as he looks into the sky,it starts to snow,as this happens a bueatiful melody plays* Me:Dont cry....dont cry....crap....im crying.....
You all thing this is sad... HahahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHA. Yeah I live in the UK and our version is different. Just listen to Claire saying "I'll miss you.... and our... LOST future." Much more heartbreaking.
Cencio Yeah, and like I said, it's much more heartbreaking hearing Claire say lost because she literally does lose her future living (and her future with Hershal).
Argh. I finished the game almost two months ago, and it was getting late, and I really wanted to finish it. I got to when Claire had to go. And when Professor Layton cried, I was bawling. And from then on, I knew it would be my new favorite game series. I freaking love the Professor. I wish Claire didn't die.
I didn't have played Professor Layton's games but I feel a strong sadness in my heart each time I listen this song. It's very difficult to explain, at least for me...

I just made a playlist with all of my favourite professor Layton music and this version of Time Travel was the final addition to a perfect playlist
"...and our Unwound Future". I couldn't even sin it as roll credits cause.. *Sobs
The UK version is even more heart-wrenching. as she's fading away "we had so many plans........ you won't forget, will you?..... Our shared past..... and our...... lost future....."
This ending and the one from diabolical box just destroyed me emotionally. Only listening to time travel (and Iris) alone is enough to instantly make me cry again.
so many feels , that reminds of a puzzle
No game breaks my heart like this does, such an amazing Ending, and it really does not receive the credit it so obviously deserves as an amazing installment to an already amazing franchise...
Forever in our hearts, the Professor Layton games!
my favorite layton game ever. still makes me cry, dont know why?
The amount of feels and nostalgia coming from this song... Man. I love this game and series so much.
I want to move to England because of how beautiful that scene was. I love that song!
Ive played this Game a thousand Times and I still cry at the End
Thank you for sharing...really had a hard time getting a copy of my own until I stumbled upon you.
Back to that day when we parted…
Layton: No, Claire…
Claire: I'm sorry I can't stay. (embraces and kisses Layton, then turns away)
Layton: Claire, wait!
Claire: (starts glowing) We had so many…plans for the future. Do you remember, Hershel? I'll miss you…and our…unwound future.
Layton: …You CAN'T go!
Claire: (gasps)
Layton: I don't want to say goodbye again! I CAN'T, I WON'T!!!
Claire: I know you…and I know you'll stay strong. After all…that's what a gentleman does. I must go now, Hershel. Thank you for everything. Goodbye. (turns away and walks behind a building as this song starts up)
Luke: (notices and runs toward Claire, but finds nothing there) …She's gone!
Layton: (turns away, weeps, and removes his hat as screen pans out and snow falls. Roll credits)
I cried the first time I saw this scene. I cried even harder when I saw Layton crying.
This song and Iris from pandoras box can make me cry anytime ;-;
Surely someday for me too
from the azran legacy
Ace, me too TT_TT
Same...
Layton didnt deserve this 😢
Many ppl said this before but, if layton cries, u cry that's the rule
Our lost future...
As a kid I cried but I admit that I would cry now too, that I'm 17 no shame for this
This song brought a tears to my eyes. I've never played this series before but now I'm considering trying them out soon.
The ending reminds me of pokemon mystery dungeon explorers of sky ending
Wait what you're here?!
Hold on, I just realised. In that scene, it's implied that it's Christmas, right?
Clive planned his mobile fortress attack to ruin Christmas Eve.
Saddest Christmas ever for Layton
christmas can be really bad....i mean...clive did destroy a little part of london but that isn't mentioned
Will Nothing is wrong with Christmas
i meaned it can be...for layton and for those who lost their homes..
Will Ok. But just because it is snowing doesn't mean that it is Christmas. It could just be the first winter snow
Best game ever... and the ending was really sad...
And now I have to wait ages for the next one?!?!? I can't! I WON'T!
Good news, we’re almost there
The tune of this song fits with sad scenes and credits in any movie.
Haven't played this game for a few years now but bloody hell I'm crying!
I'm legit having goosebumps remembering the ending...
The story in pure tragedy... listening to this theme HURTS.. knowing the backstory of everything throughout the series, especially this one.
It HURTS REAL BAD.
aw man everytime i hear this, my heart 💔
Every single Professor Layton game has made me cry.
They each have their own single, beautiful, tear-jerking story.
I can't fucking wait for Mask of Miracle. This is my favorite series, and after all the shit I went through to buy and beat the games, you can bet I'd go through it all again just for this series.
Am I crazy or does some of the main melody (the one that starts at 0:27) use the same notes as “Iris” from DB, but spaced out differently?
I love the photos in the credits. How it over looks their adventures together. Like the part were luke is packing his stuff and theres a layton mask a chelmey mask a flora mask etc. He likes to collect faces doesnt he?
I cried at the end of this game.
In my headcanon, Claire stays stuck 10 years in the future, with the guilt, thst out of sll the victims, she survived as the only one. Even though she lives hsppy with Layton snd grows old, she will have this guilt forever.
saddest professor layton ending ever
Thanks for uploading mate! I was looking for this one. Really emotional. I still cry when I see the ending, and feel kinda heartbroken if you know what I mean; just so sad :(
Damn, they really know how to write an awesome story!
I realized this kinda music is my best :) I realllly love it!
6 year old me was bawling at the end of that game.
This is still my favourite ds game and I cried like a baby at the end, and sometimes I still do
Every single time I come back here and play this song, the feeling of a blue Christmas night suddenly appears in my mind. Just like that night - the night Mr.Layton took his hat off!!! Love Layton saga!
+Kiệt Lâm The image of a rainy night in 1930s New York appears to me
This makes me want to cry
...nope. Still can't listen to this without shedding a tear at least once ; - ;
6 years ago... Where does time go?
(No pun intended)
13 years ago... Where does time go?
this song makes me sad and happy
*Layton starts to tear up,as he looks into the sky,it starts to snow,as this happens a bueatiful melody plays*
Me:Dont cry....dont cry....crap....im crying.....
999,999,999 Picarats
Puzzle -1 Don't Cry!
Nailed it, only time I shed a tear was in Diabolical Box, but that's just me.
+Professor Hershel Layton To me this game was the saddest by far. But Pandora's Box comes in second.
if dont cry is puzzle one, i would be stuck in there forever. I cry at every single Professor Layton game.
Diabolical Box's ending was far too heartwarming to feel sad. That's not to say I didn't cry, but it was for different reasons.
Will who doesn't
I cried over both lol
You all thing this is sad...
HahahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Yeah I live in the UK and our version is different.
Just listen to Claire saying "I'll miss you.... and our... LOST future."
Much more heartbreaking.
Lmao what are you saying, those lines are in every version of the game, no matter what's the language
Cencio in the American version she says 'Unwound future' not 'lost future'.
Oh, didn't know that!
Cencio Yeah, and like I said, it's much more heartbreaking hearing Claire say lost because she literally does lose her future living (and her future with Hershal).
Isn't it "Our shared past... and our... lost future"?
