To me that's the one of the major signs that a trucking business is going under
I was told when I first got in the trucking 🚚 industry that if a company starts to let maintenance go and if the drivers are looking tired and shabby It is a high sign that the company is not doing too well at all.. Also that is Apparently what many DOT inspectors also look for as well like Hawks and Vultures

They could also be doing a number of things because they're just doing it for the tax write-off whether it needs it or not and oftentimes you find yourself to be the lab rat for them to test that new s*** on you

      This was my first thought.
If you do a good pretrip inspection on a truck or trailer and then find not just 1 or 2 things but a lot of mechanical issues, that’s a company to avoid because they’re skimping on maintenance. And they’re probably skimping on maintenance either because they’re just in it to make a quick buck or because they’re almost broke and can’t afford the maintenance.

Another red flag is when these companies hire a third-party company to start moving your ELD logs adjusting them to give you more drive time. New drivers beware never allow anybody to adjust your clocks. Some of these trucking companies are getting cute my hiring third-party companies to do their dirty work. But what the driver does not realize is that your cell phone Andor shipper and receiver, and or scale houses are all time-stamping. And God forbid you're ever in a wreck. I told him any company worth their salt would write that off as a business expense and that there was no need for them to fine him for using any toll. Jan. 9, 2023----If you're not being paid on time, contact the unemployment office and file a complaint. Had this problem with Knight many years ago and they went after Knight. Knight tried being sneaky, wanting me to sign an agreement that I would not bring any additional complaints to the unemployment office and I said no. I retired 7 years ago after driving truck for various companies for 10 years. Made more money, with less effort with an ltl company than I did with any otr company.

Another sign is that the company stops buying new equipment. This is exactly what was happening at celadon and I thought it was a little strange that they stopped buying new trailers at regular intervals.

I consider the biggest issue amongst OTR driving is the F*g LUMPER Issue ! !
Flat out - any more these days the drivers have absolutely no business being involved with whatever issues the receiver has with accepting their freight other than OSD , , ,
Drivers are not allowed on the docks for loading the freight , the drivers are not allowed on the docks for unloading the freight , , ,
Whatever issues there are between the ways the shipper loads the freight the receiver orders & the ways the receiver wants to accept the freight they ordered is between the shipper & the receiver , & if necessary then the broker also , , ,
Drivers have absolutely no control over the distribution of freight other than arriving between picking up & delivering the freight within manageable schedules for safe delivery , , ,
It is complete BS that drivers have to waste any time to pay lumper services at all , , && the 98% of the time it's them grossery f*g warehouses manipulating the BS ! ! !
File a class action lawsuit against the industry to get them mofos to get their money laundering BS off of our backs ! ! ! Thays all it is - MONEY LAUNDERING ! ! ! Abusing truck drivers to show acceptance of the practice to hide the laundering of payments between everyone involved between shippers & receivers ! ! !
THERE ! there is one of the biggest problems with the turnover of drivers , , , Drivers get fed up with putting with the BS petty issues between the ways receivers say they want their freight received in such certain manner && the ways the shipper says it must load that customer's freight in such way as to get it loaded ! ! !
DRIVERS HAVE NO ROLE NOR RESPONSIBILITY IN ANY REGARDS TO THEIR PETTY LOADING/UNLOADING (money laundering) ISSUES ! ! !

Everything that you’re saying is so true! We are a small trucking company. We only have two trucks one of which I drive. We have a dedicated run but last July there was an explosion at the plant that we haul the gravel for. Which made our trucking business come to a screeching halt. It is still closed down as we are waiting for OSHA to give the thumbs up to open again. Speaking of being exploited. We had two invoices that were due before the explosion ever happened. Which were already over the 60 days. My husband works for that said company as well as their truck driver for their company. And they have all continue to work during this closure which is good. But they’re not producing anything to where we can bring the gravel again. So not only are we losing the revenue every single day but they owe us $62,000! Since they did not pay us in 2022 it’s going to mess up our taxes big time! I know everybody is telling us to get a lawyer but the problem is we really can’t. My husband works for them and we still technically have that run. They’re supposed to open up at the end of the month but I’ve told my husband we are not getting one load for them until they pay the bill. What pisses me off the most is the vice president of the company which is the owners son has been showing pictures of his $1.4 million home that they purchased just a few months before the explosion. It makes me so angry that they can give a shit about us and there he is sitting in his $1.4 million home while I am sitting in a trailer still. $62,000 is a lot of money for a small owner operator. I have my own RUclips channel and I know I should bring attention to this. But I really can’t because we don’t want to have any issues with the company that owes us the money. So I’m glad that you’re talking about the small operators that are going under because of bills not being paid. Thank you

If a company is eager to give you a team mate, that is good. But if they say “you gotta get your own team mate” - - not a great sign. It means they’re trying to nickel and dime you. You can make $72,000 take home teaming, home a lot, or if you have to go solo, it’s only $51,000. So the choise is obvious. So if the company is not interested in helping you - drop the company. Also, if they have 0 city drivers to help you out, and force you to start on yard, grab empty trailer, drop and hook at customer, then give you a run to not a far place, and on backhaul you have to deliver to the backhaul customer, then you can go to yard - - you know that’s a terrible company. Also if they say “we don’t go to California / Maine, Florida, Seattle… another sign that is bad. If you get paid by the mile, you want to rack up huge miles, or else be paid really high rates per mile. And ask them before you start out - - how much can I make in the long term at this company? After you start working for them, if the pay is not appearing to be what was mentioned - - get out - - they are liars.

I've always told drivers I know to absolutely save at least enough money to live off of for three months.. and never live exclusively in the truck the company gives you to drive .. if the company goes under or decide they dont like you anymore they won't tell you untill it's to late ,, and if you don't have money or a place out of your truck to live your screwed..I lost my job driving for a company that closed up shop last June and toke the whole summer off with out pain and never looked for job one time ..a company called me in Sept and offered me a job good pay and benefits .. I was never in a hurry or desperate for work ..that gives you an edge , if you can take or leave a job offer that's on the table.. .. never wholly trust the company you drive for they would drop you in a heart beat and not Evan blink ..

The insurance rates are absolutely insane. We have a dedicated run and haul gravel. But in July of last year there was an explosion at the plant that we haul gravel for. So our trucking has been down since then as well. When I called the insurance company to tell them that we’re not moving the truck they would not budge. They told me if I took the insurance off of the truck then technically we would have a truck with no insurance and they would tell that DMV that we didn’t have truck insurance on the truck. They didn’t give a shit that the truck wasn’t moving. They also weren’t going to refund any of the money. We paid them upfront for the entire year. It averages out to about $1200 a month per truck! So we have two trucks that have been sitting since July. All of that money down the drain. My other problem is I didn’t register the trucks because why waste the money if the trucks weren’t moving now I found out from the DMV that I’m gonna have to pay all of those late fees since August 2022. There’s no getting around it. Even if I turned in the plates and then restarted the trucks when the plan opened again they said I would still owe the late fees. I am set to go to the DMV tomorrow and I am so incredibly smart to find out how much the late fees are going to be. I know it’s going to be astronomical we’re supposed to go back into business at the end of the month. The other problem is this company that we haul gravel for owes us $62,000. So unless they pay us we’re not hauling shit for them.

I had to wait 12hrs for a tire change once because some karen on nightshift had a mood. Was stranded in farmington NM for 4days because they don't keep up with maintenance. The don't pay drivers as advertised. No CDL school reimbursement, sent the paperwork in 3 times. I knew 5 lease operators that were getting Negative Checks. I'll repeat, Negative Checks. Don't do flatbed for them either, they'll tcall you consistently so you don't get miles. The team driver program is a scam as well, they'll try to pay you 25cpm. I worked for those scumbags for 2 months, no hometime. I had to plan my evac in Nashville, caught a flight from the airport to GTFO.
Oh and they shorted my last check. I called the Tennessee Department of Labor, and they didn't answer my phone or respond to voicemail.

And yet, that "temporary fuel surcharge" we all had to pay when fuel went way up a few years ago was picked up by every carrier adding it on to every shipment who viewed it as a free for them price increase, of course like every other "temporary" fee/surcharge it became permanent despite fuel prices going way back down and they were pocketing all that extra revenue.
I stopped selling on Ebay 2-3 years ago when the costs to me to FedEx ship was costing almost more than the items being shipped- a shipment from Iowa to California was almost $80, UPS was even MORE @ $135! with all the UPS add-on surcharges the shipping cost around $45 and it hadn't even moved off my porch yet! there was a residential pick up fee, a "rural" residence surcharge, fuel surcharge, then because I shipped in plywood crates there was an additional $12 "special handling" surcharge for any shipment not in cardboard! forget that the plywood ELIMINATED any damage and breakage. There was another surcharge if the item was 70#, and yet another one if it was 100#, then the transport charges, a residential delivery surcharge, fuel surcharge on the delivery, and taxes on all of it.
There was no way I could sell my products and ship for that kind of cost with the shipping included, and every January the cost increased, even adding a small $10 charge for shipping (my prices included shipping) I was STILL subsidizing every shipment. Clients will not pay shipping costs like that on a $275 item, and when shipping was not included I constantly got the "can you combine shipping?" like I can really "combine" two 75 pound items in one big box!
I remember in the 1980s being in NYC and having UPS come at no charge and pick up, and ship my item that weighed around 22# to california and I was able to sell the item for $38.50 DELIVERED and make a decent profit as the UPS shipping cost was about $8 on that.

Here is how I found out one of the companies I worked for was failing giving me the chance to get off the ship before it sank. Blew an inside tire on the trailer-called dispatch and they agreed as I limped the rig about 10 miles to the closest truck stop around 5am. Was told by the attendant that the tire guy wasn’t scheduled till 7 but they would call to see if he would come in early. About 20min later the tire guy showed up and directed me into a bay and removed the good outer wheel and the bad inner wheel. Then this man dressed in dirty overalls tells me that it’s going to cost $2064.56 paid up NOW before he replaces the bad tire and puts the wheels back on the trailer! I’m thinking WTF? O-K I’ll call the company for a P.O. #. The maintenance director at the company went ballistic-that’s way overpriced and blackmail not the repair our rig and get it back on the road for a timely delivery-put that tire guy on the phone I want to talk to him! Now I didn’t hear the the maintenance directors side of the conversation but I did here the tire guy speaking. Your driver told you right. That’s how much this repair is today because you’re company hasn’t paid ME for the work I’ve done on your rigs the last six months. Bla-Bla-Bla from the director. Tire guy in dirty overalls says- Yes I can do this because my name is So In So and I Own this truck stop. I’ve been waiting for this opportunity for months. You wire the full amount Now or this rig is going to sit until I get MY money and if that’s the case I’ll ban your rigs from MY Truck Stop. WOW that was fun to listen to and it wasn’t bullshit. He really was the Owner. The money came and the Owner mounted a new tire and put the wheels back on the trailer and before I left I shook the Owners hand with much respect. Now for the rest of the story. When I get back to the yard the maintenance director corners me and ask me why I went to that truck stop? What?? It was the closest repair shop on the route-what truck stop do you want me to use? Don’t use any of them we owe ALL of them money. This happened 1980-81 when there were still a lot of mom/pop truck stops all over the country.
