  • This video explores the art of grafting trees, using a beautiful Japanese Maple as our example. Grafting allows you to combine the desired traits of two different trees, like the strong rootstock of one variety with the stunning foliage of another in Japanese Maples. After watching several RUclips videos our goal is to surpass those videos for the most complete explanation of grafting and how to take care of a grafted tree in year 1 and year 2.
Although the technique applies to many trees, this video gives you a step-by-step demonstration specifically for grafting Japanese Maples. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, grafting opens doors to cultivating truly unique trees!

It's like riding a bike. You will fail a few times but then have the hang of it.

Thanks for the great video - I’ve learned a lot, as always. This is the best demonstration of tree grafting that I’ve seen online so far. I always thought that the cambium layers had to line up along the full length of the graft, which seemed exceptionally difficult to achieve. The idea of placing the scion at a very slight angle to ensure contact somewhere along the graft makes total sense, and makes the job seem less daunting. It does bring one question to mind: does the amount of contact of the cambium layer between the rootstock and scion increase as the graft grows? It’s hard for me to visualize how this might occur.

There are conflicting opinions on scion placement. Do the cross method like I did here to ensure cambium contact or go parallel for potential max contact . Yes, eventually the cambium fuses and completely grows together.

I’m in zone 8B in Alabama and I have a question on zinnias. When is ok to plant seeds in my garden? Video on Japanese Maple is very helpful. Thanks

Hey Billy you can start them indoors now. If planting directly in the ground I would wait until late May to early June to ensure the ground is warm enough to make them germinate.

Is it possible to graft a red maple? Not a Japanese maple. More like a Brandywine or Autumn Blaze maple?

Yes, this is how maple cultivars are reproduced. They are not true to seed so we graft to keep characteristics.
