The MOST Underappreciated Landscape Plant
What is the song you used to this short ? So pleasant to the ear.
I'm not even sure. It is something copyright free from RUclips studios.
Step 1: Dig a hole Step 2: put the acorn in the hole Step 3: wait 🤤🤤🤤
My experience is by the time spring rolls around 50-75% are gone using that method because of bad acorns, squirrels, deer, and racoons digging them up.
Have tried several citrus trees taking out for summer in for winter and every single one has gotten scale infestation beyond control.
Horticultural oil or imidaloprid will take care of scale.
Where are you located?
Alabama. My accent probably gives it away. 😆
@@Dr.Warrengotcha :-) haha I can’t pick up accents all that well;-) thank you, I live in North Carolina and just wanted to compare the climates. Thanks for all the knowledge that you share with us.
@Kamila_q I lived in NC 20ish years ago. If you are in the Piedmont (think Charlotte, research triangle area) the climate is almost identical. "Down east" slightly warmer. Ashville much colder. I'm zone 8a
@@Dr.WarrenI live near southern pines, I got some Japanese maples and I am trying to figure out which ones will go where :-) so it’s good to know you live in similar climate.
But one thing serious. People? Please. Don’t use this stuff as a watering source. Yes use it but also water your plants with water. This is a thing you use once every week or 2 and be aware of build up. Ok carry on.
This 👆👆. You can definitely have too much of a good thing.
You look so excited!
😆😆. I was experimenting. First and only time using a teleprompter. I wrote a script because I wanted to make sure I stated the data accurately. I wasn't used to trying to keep up with words moving upwards on a screen. Newscasters must practice it because it's a skill. All my other videos are "off the cuff".
What if I substitute the Acetic acid with the citric acid instead?
Since both are weak acid, having a chelation ability, and of course the carbon chain
It should work but I would need to calculate molarity to figure out the correct ratios to run it to completion. 3 CaCO3(s) + 2 C6H8O7(aq) → Ca3(C6H5O7)2(aq) + 3 CO2(g) + 3 H2O(l)
Interesting! I get very curious about what happens chemicly when you leave it for longer? Why should you not use it? I usually put eggshells in the microwave for 3 minutes before grinding them up and feeding them to my worms. But I will try this in spring! Thanks!
acrobat.adobe.com/id/urn:aaid:sc:VA6C2:febb6a97-459f-4a2d-9492-c820f89fbb47 I made the recommendation based off research. Pharmaceutical grade calcium acetate is good for 2-3 years when stored air tight in a temp and humidity controlled environment. Most people are going to store this in a garage or out building which means it probably isn't going to last as long
When identifying quercus incana, bluejack oak, don't forget to look in the spring time for the pink new growth leaves, they look almost like a pink flower. It's an easy identifier because other oaks don't look this way.
I didn't know this thanks for sharing!!
What are those white dots just above the roots? When you pot the propagated plant do you bury just the roots or also those white dots?
You can bury those in the potting mix. Those are roots starting to form.
can you do the same thing with crushed oyster shells
So this is actually brilliant! Oyster shells are calcium carbonate and would work. I don't know if I would stick oyster shells in a blender😳. They are much thicker than an egg shell even crushed up. Maybe use an old blender. I go to Apalachicola once every 2-3 years. I might have to grab a handful of shells and try this out.
@@Dr.Warren I typically have crushed oyster shells on hand because we have Chickens. I was just thinking that it took an awful lot of work to get the egg shells ready to process......... especially if you have a large garden.
Can i use this on hydroponic?? And how much should i use,,means quantity,, Seeing the full video but not feel bored.. It’s helpful.. Thanks
Typically in hydroponics you use some variation of hoglang solution that has 15+ other nutrients needed for plants. I want to do a video on that one as well. Hopefully soon.
@@Dr.Warren I'm waiting 😍
Just subscribed and am happy to of found you. I love new ideas of how to make my own natural fertilizer. Thanks
Thanks so much! I hope my channel helps you out. Is monetization still 1k subs? You are getting really close. I will get you one closer.
At Cherrie Blossom Greenhouse I tell people that poinsettias are like humans, they enjoy a consistent temperature. Furnaces/ heaters/ fire places, vents and doors would be best avoided. Water occasionally, .5 cup of water every day but don’t let them sit in water. They don’t like their feet wet. When transporting hold the plant by the bottom of the pot and hold them away from your body so you don’t accidentally break the lower stems. Love this info, keep it coming Dr Warren.
Thanks for the words of encouragement and sharing your knowledge!
I have clay soil. Can you use gypsum instead of pine bark amendment?
I dont think it would hurt
Gypsum is useful for helping clay become more permeable. Pine bark was to add organic matter to the soil, I guess; do not amend natural soil, use backfill. Use liquid humate to condition the soil.
Excellent information. I used to throw crumpled egg shells along with used tea leaves around my roses. Will try your recipe soon. Thanks.
Thanks for sharing. That is great information.
Thank you for your help this year. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas! PS. Saving my egg shells now. 👍. Mary Thomson-Decatur, AL
You're welcome, Mary. I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas! I'll be sure to start saving my egg shells too.
I loved your presentation! Much enjoyed! 👍👍
Thank you, I put a lot of work into it.
@@Dr.Warren I can well believe it! A wealth of knowledge.
Mine never rooted. The leaves drop off and I don't know what am doing wrong.
Do you have little white bumps where roots should be? If so those are baby roots and you could go ahead and pot them up to encourage further development
This video is just about Bearded Irises (Iris Germanica)..... need some info on Siberian Irises and Japanese Irises(ensata)....
Question: I planted a couple acorns in pots. I guess they are burr oak. The acorns were huge, the size of golf balls. Squirrels got one, but the other germanated -- caged for protection. The second year in the fall I planted the sapling in the ground. Question is, upon germination the plant formed two trunks, should I chop one trunk off? The sapling trunks are about 4 feet tall. Not sure if they will compete.
I would select the best central leader and cut the other one. Eventually you would have a weak crotch angle with two trunks and any big wind/ice storm would split it. I hope that makes sense? Sometimes it can be difficult to explain something in a You tube comment.
Great video! I’ll give it a try! Also my neighbor gave me her 30 year old Norfolk pine a year ago and it’s doing well but the soil hasn’t been drying out lately and I’m nervous to water it even though I’ve skipped watering for over a month sometimes. I’ve read that it needs to dry out between watering but it just never does! lol should I just give it a little water ever other week?
It is a very slow grower but it needs to dry out in between waterings.
‘Tree seed man” on ETSY needs to watch your video and all others like this. Tried to sell me 4 acorns that had worms and 90% didn’t float. Unbelievable
In my area of west north/central florida (50 miles south and west of Ocala), many homes have the Floratam variety. It is my understanding that Floratam reacts differently to most weed killers than other types of St. Augustine. In other words, weed killers that work fine on most St Augustine grasses will kill Floratam. Please comment on what weed killer to use.
Floratam is a little more sensitive to weed killer than other St. Augustine grasses. Off the top of my head, I think Image makes a product for Floratam but I am not 100% certain. Check the label, it will let you know.
Very informative thank you. Trying to I’d a tree in my yard. It’s a type of red oak is all I’ve learned so far. It has very dark bark with deep ridges. Deep!
That could be a black oak. You can take a picture and run it through Google gemini and it will give you an idea of what you are looking at.
I recently took some cuttings from my Uncle’s camellias. He passed away. 😢 I’m just afraid it’s not the right time of year for this. I have some grow lights coming that I’ll probably try with them. His house is for sale so I’m afraid it’ll be too late to get them when it’s the optimal time to try this if these don’t grow for me. Great video btw! 🌱
Sorry to hear about your loss. My wife's Grand dad passed away several years ago and he had some unique camellias that we propagated before the house was sold. It has a decent chance at working. However, you probably will not get any roots until next Spring.
In North Carolina we call the Willow Oak a Pin Oak 😂 I know we are wrong but don’t tell us! Ask someone next time you’re in my state and put me to the test. That is a Pin Oak here. 😂
That’s funny. I’ll be sure to ask! My nephew is in Dendrology at NCSU. He will know about this.
Would this formula be good for growing vegetables in too? Approximately what ratio of organic compost to old mix do you use? Thank you :)
Yes, it would work. You could do 1:1 ratio by volume.
I'm in North Carolina and have followed the video this fall to try and propagate some tea olives. It's been about a month and the leaves on my shoots are falling off and there appears to be a thin fuzz on the nodes of most of the cuttings. Is this a lost cause or can i save them? What went wrong or is this normal?
Sorry to hear this. The fuzz is going to be fungus. You probably are not going to be able to save them. On the next run one thing you can do to help with the fungus is to spry with copper sulfate or you can use a 10:1 ratio (volume) of water: peroxide. That will help keep some of that mess away.

It's been good to be an Auburn tiger the past week or so. Maybe we can get the win this Saturday.
I put wood chips on top of cardboard to clear the weedy annual grasses. For example I did that last spring after my husband took a string trimmer to the grasses. Now that it is fall rainy season, it is easy to plant daffodils or perennials through the cardboard. (We are in a dry summer/ wet winter climate. ) The cardboard covered with wood chips treatment is how I expand landscaped areas. In the vegetable growing area, I use this same treatment on the paths.
Hey neighbor. Just found your channel, and you mentioned you're on Sand Mountain. Thought I'd say hi from Albertville
Hey neighbor. That video was filmed up at Snead where I teach Horticulture. Keep an eye out for the next Marshall county good life magazine. They recently interviewed me about this channel and a few other things.
@Dr.Warren oh ok. I had a music scholarship to Snead back in 1983. Nowadays Im disabled and garden out in Asbury community. I watch the gardening videos for tips.
I use newspaper a lot.
Great idea
Looks like he had a bizarre gardening accident. Spinal Tap.
Ha! I tore my Achilles training for a marathon. All is well now.
Very informative! When do you start moving the plant outside the garage? Also, when do you remove the plastic baggy on the scion you just grafted? Thank you
Once you know the graft takes move it to a shady area outside to let it acclimate. Once you start seeing buds swell you can loosen up the bag and 10-14 days later just take it off
@@Dr.Warren Thank you!
What about growing cannabis and smoking it??? Or i guess all fertilizers have same things dont they??? Same as planting a plant in the ground its going to pull everything it wants
As long as you are watering the soil media directly and not spraying it over the top of the buds I wouldn't think there is much to worry about.
@Dr.Warren ya I had a good run 👍
Would this work for any pepper plants? IE, jalapeños or banana peppers?
Yes, regardless of type it will work
Will the root system hurt the driveway?
I have never seen one bust up a driveway like a willow, oak, or birch would do
Thank you. Best video for this problem. Made the fix easy.
Wow! You really go to town on those peppers. I used to just prune them down, dig them up, and throw them in a pot. I kept them in the rafters over winter. Recently I've been overwintering them in-ground with protection. (Melbourne Australia around zone 9b?) Sadly this year we got some late frosts and bad storms and they didn't make it. I'll be bringing them indoors again this winter. Great video👍
I would think being 9b you might be able to get away with just putting up against the south facing wall of the house most winters. I have friends from Atlanta that moved to Melbourne. They are always sending pictures of their son catching fish from port Phillip. Looks like a beautiful city that is on my bucket list to see.
. It would be north facing in Australia😁
@@The_Dougie Good point! I'm pretty good at translating Northern hemisphere to Southern and adding 6 months to planting times. Cheers!
@The_Dougie 100% correct My bad 🤦♂️🤦♂️
Excellent presentation of information, thank you !!!
Thanks for watching. I'm glad this video helped you out.
@Dr.Warren , there is a vacant lot near me with an oak tree with a circumference which deserves measurement. I will, from learning the distinction and measurement formula from you, post the results
Very informative this will help with my FFA class I subscribed!
Thanks! I LOVE the FFA. My dad was an FFA advisor for 31 years. I did this partly for the FFA at Albertville high school. Two of my former students are the advisors doing an awesome job. They were both fresh out of college and I was trying to provide them with some content. Best of luck on your plant ID teams.
@ that’s awesome to hear! I just got back from Indianapolis for an FFA convention and the FFA gas sparked my love for plants
@EmmettReese-nh9lg yes, the national convention is pretty awesome
@ 😎🚜🌳
I worry about that stuff being harmful to the environment and little critters.
The SDMS suggests it's good to go.
I have no idea what this smells like but have heard so much about it I bought one yesterday that was 5ft tall. I’m in Tampa bay. No idea when it blooms here. Everyone I asked around here hasn’t been very informative either.. so I guess I wait lol
Thanks for watching. I am not sure when it would bloom in Tampa. I would think in the fall when it "cools off".
@ 😂 I’ll keep you posted
I’m in North AL as well. HOA restricts to 6’ fence, even for just the back yard so I’m looking for height but not too much spread. It will be right along a fence line and I’m also concern that my septic is on the particular side I’m trying to shield. Any ideas on which if these are best for height, lower radius, and less detrimental root system for septic?
Look at Italian cypress but they will get very tall
What kind of Zoysia is yours? Im in notthwest Florida and want to change from centipede to Zoysia.
