As a Mondo fan I think the circus theming of his execution is actually really fitting even if it doesn't directly relate to his talent, because for all his life he is basically putting on a performance, pretending to be this strong masculine ideal when he hardly feels that way inside. I would change his execution by basically cutting out all the racist kid's book references and have him fall off the bike halfway through, then when we cut inside to the bike slowing you see bloody tire tracks everywhere and the bike is almost all pink (maybe making it a different color would sell it better), implying he was downright pulverized. It brings the body horror of the original ending's implications to the forefront without any of the silliness.
Now this idea is unsettling in all the right ways; thanks for the new perspective as to why it might be a circus theme! Having it be about him putting on a show, being a clown, something that by its nature can't be taken seriously, isn't a take I've seen before!
I feel like they coulda made this theme clearer by framing it less just "circus for no reason" and more I dunno.. ringmaster Monokuma presents us an exhibit of the rare and dangerous biker boy. Have him start already in a cage, being treated like a freak show. Chains like in Leon's execution drag him around doing a stupid little dance on a ball, he's emasculated in all the ways he feared. But he manages to break out of the chains and see some false hope of escaping. There's a gap in the bars, and a motorbike just outside. He revs it up and tries to escape but realises it's moving on its own outside of his control! Handcuffs clamp down to stop him from escaping! And it runs straight into a second cage, the ball cage, and gives us the same execution we already know. I feel like adding a bit more story beforehand would help show how it relates to his plotline, and it'd feel like less of an anticlimax.
Something I really hope you touch on is how we perceive yasuhiro, he’s often seen as the useless one of the survivors, which isn’t fully untrue, but its always been interesting to me how they just seem to forget toko, didn’t really do anything either, aside from jill….but that’s an entirely different can of worms
16:25 THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS! Hifumi especially feels like he could have been more than just….at fatphobic joke. He and Toko are two very passionate writers. It would make sense that they would become friends, giving each other writing tips and talking about their favorite stories while branching out their tastes in literature. Hell, they would make good rivals too. Toko has the benefit of being a survivor and thus being in Ultra Despair Girls but Hifumi didn’t make it, thus cutting his character development short. Also making Toko the Ultimate True Crime Blogger is GOLDEN
Super underrated!! I love how you give a general overview of the chapter without it being too boring while still serious enough to get an understanding! i really like how you changed toko/genocide jill to be less of a "villain" and instead just a fanatic blogger, keeping the fun parts of the character while making her more humanized :D Also both the ways you fixed chihiros part are super good :] The execution storyboards also look super cool!! And definitely makes more sense than the original :D (I can't comment much on if they are accurate representations though sorry :[) But yeah overall great analysis with good solutions!! Looking forward to the next part :]
I like the changes you’ve made, especially having Makoto just logic out Chihiro, as leaving the trial grounds is just so strange that I don’t think anyone talks about.
Regarding DID in media, I think Mike from Total Drama is actually fairly realistic and a decent interpretation (though with some flaws). He switches alters frequently and has a bunch of different triggers. He has a complex over his condition being discovered but grows into accepting the other parts of him. The only bad depictions with him is that they make the switch obvious by making him do a loud gasp as it happens, he uses outdated terminology (personalities instead of alters), and the existence of a malevolent alter. That said, he is treated equally to everyone else and basically acts as the protagonist for the two seasons he's involved in. He even gets a girlfriend who simply says that his alters are just more of him to love. His character arcs are treated fairly seriously, being that he lashes out but eventually communicates with his alters and they later on reintegrate back into him (he is very sad to lose his alters but notices that he still has a lot of their skills and such). Obviously, not all DID systems view reintegration and fusing of alters the same way, but it is nice to see that he has fully embraced everything and is treated as a normal person both when he has the condition and when he is in control/has restructured himself.
i really adore this series so far! i think all of your changes are really well thought-out and not dissimilar from ones i'd make, so it's been really fun to 'follow along' in a way. especially the extra added bit of how carefully respectful mondo is in your rewrite - i and a lot of other trans people, naturally, fear being misgendered in death, and it makes it really hit how much mondo was risking out of the sheer respect he had for the person he killed. i ADORE your take on syo! hanako i think maintains all the charm and fun of the original, which imho is the most important part. i have seen people just get rid of her outright as a character and i always find it does make for a more boring final cast without actually addressing any of the issues of her character - it's always felt more like sweeping an issue under a rug instead of fixing anything. and even outside of the realm of danganronpa, i can entirely believe a very dedicated teenage girl would go to great lengths to research an ongoing murder case. hanako would have LOVED the true crime boom of 2019. VERY excited for when chapter three goes up - and curious as to if you have any intention to do anything like this for the other DR games in the future, even if it'd be admittedly a huge undertaking. it feels like i've been toying with the idea of rewriting v3 since pretty much the day of its release, and ive yet to see anyone actually address all of (what i feel are) the actual issues with it.
Oh boy, so I was _really_ curious about what you'd have to say on the changes to this chapter because I've heard people talk to death about the first two topics, with me only realizing extra about how much more you'd have to say about the Execution due to that being something you seemingly have more stakes in, so let me go one at a time. - DID: Yes, I think this is a fine way. Syo is such a hard character to denote the exacts about due to how strange being in a system can be (I learned today that Alters in the same system can have separate allergies and no one knows why), and while a lot of her does enforce bad stereotypes, she's also a really amazing character. Toko gets lifted up so much due to being tied at the.... body to Syo, so I'm glad you recognized that they have positives and negatives to keeping her the same while also not wanting to reinforce the "evil half" thing many tend to give systems of DID. - Thank You so much for the small editor note about TransMasc as an option. Yes, Chihiro in text is a guy, and I do like that people can get a deeper meaning from their story as a trans person, but it always did bother me when people would treat TransFem as the only answer for them. But it is a good note that also the fact that TransMasc would also lose a bit of the narrative strength, so you coming up with the option of X-gender/Non-binary, something I'll admit I hadn't even considered for the conversation, to be a better approach. I'd say, as someone who is somewhere between fluid and NB, you did a great approach to the topic with Chihiro. - I'm very glad for your insight on the execution as it's something people tend to overlook as many don't even recognize the fact that it's tied to such a racist book. And yeah, it doesn't tie to Mondo all that well. Your suggestion to changing it is good, but I think two things that may make it better, if I may suggest is this. First, when the cage opens, maybe make it open as a ramp instead, so it shoots Mondo out, and that's when he gets his wrists free and tries to take control. Forcing him ahead and making him a lot more proactive while also keeping the energy up. Two, I worry the just crashing would be too similar to what happens in the next chapter execution which I really believe shouldn't change due to the great themes that one has, but I also don't have a good alternate that keeps the tone. But I do like the general change in direction. Again, amazing work on the video.
I definitely see what you mean about the crash being too aesthetically similar to Ch 3's, didn't even consider that! The execution was definitely a hard element to come up with an alternative for (probably why there aren't that many rewrites, especially compared to DR2 Ch3), but I LOVE your ramp idea, especially imagining how it would look. And I'm glad I did Chihiro and the NB community justice; it was definitely something I wanted to get right if I was gonna do it at all.
I can't wait for you to fix chapter 3 of trigger happy havoc there's definitely a lot that needs to be fixed especially the trial and Celeste murder plan
the previous comment here sums up most of my thoughts, but i can say, as a nonbinary person, you did well with the chihiro representation. chihiro reads as very "young person realizing that they're nonbinary but having no courage to say anything about it", especially because of the time period. personally, i felt that very much when i realized i was nonbinary in the mid-2010s, so seeing your interpretation of that feeling of not fitting in but not having the courage or knowing how to express that to anyone hits hard. it's also a sad fact of life that, while severely underreported, many of us do end up being killed because of strict gender roles. no, mondo isn't transphobic, but the murder still parallels reality and makes their death more tragic as a result
I love this so much! As a person who is trans I love your take on chihiro, I think it's very inspiring and amazing! If I can, may I give some suggestions for chapter 3? 1. When in trial when everybody realises that hifumi actually said celestes last name, have things go as usual, but at the end, after she's done breaking down and is defeated, kyoko asks about how hifumi knew, to which celeste has no idea, better implying that he had his memories returned before death. This change is big, idk if its too big but it is something I do really stand by. 2. Hiro dies instead of taka. I think taka dying too soon is a warmish take, and hiro being the least useful charecter in 1 is also a pretty warm take, thing is, taka had a whole charecter arc he was going through, by chapter 3 it feels like he was menst to go through an ark that would end at the end of chapter 4 or something, but things were cut too short. While hiro... as funny as he is really doesn't do much of note, so, here's what I'd do. In daily life I'd have hiro ALSO be infantslised by alter ego, I'd suggest due to being "another life form from entirely different world" or because alter ego tells him some magical junk, either way besides that stuff mostly goes the same, though taka is more aggressive in this version, especially to hiro and hifumi. Now everything goes the same, except with taka and hiro having switched places, though do note up until chapter 4 post trial taka is still in his whole mondotaka form thing. Taka is framed of being metal justice, hiro dies. Also I think seeing mondotaka and celeste absoloutely losing it at eachother would be very very funny lol Anyway for chapter 4 taka would still replace the role of hiro, attacking sayaka, though after monokuma reveals sakuras note, after seeing hina be able to move on after losing her freind, he regains his sanity, though feeling extremely guilty for how he treated sakura, and everyone else, from this point on nothing much else happens (I'd give have him be among the 3 survivers in the end of 2 though as I think he would fit the tone of the final trial) Anyway this is how I think chapter 4 should've gone down, i really hope taka survived cause again he deserves his charecger ark to go on for longer aghhhh, if you wanna take from my ideas feel free!!! :D
As a system who mostly in some way or form IDs as trans, I just want to say that I absolutely would love that rewrite! I agree that Jill is such a fun character, and it would be a shame to cut her out entirely. When we were replaying the game with our partner, she actually said that it would have been funny and more accurate if Jill was a different form of writer from Toko, and that's why she hates her. Our partner even suggested that they could have made Jill the ultimate fanfic writer instead of Hifumi to cause even more inner turmoil. We're excited to see what the other chapters in this video series have in store! Loving it so far!
Glad you liked it! It was fun coming up with different talents for Jill, and I'm happy I seem to have gotten the system rep down! The idea of Jill writing fanfic is absolutely hilarious, Toko would be so mad 😂 I kind of wish I came up with that now
Just found your channel today and I'm so impressed! My only complaint is the audio quality which is one, not a big deal, and two, probably not your priority. I am interested to see how Hanako will interact with the rest of the cast. Maybe Toko's rivalry with Hifumi could be foiled by Hanako being a fan of his work, especially if she is chronically online. One concern I have is that Jill in Canon is surprisingly strong, and I don't think that strength is fitting for the characterization you have given Hanako, so maybe the system has another alter who is an athlete of some kind. Maybe as Toko becomes more comfortable around the cast, with her secret of having DID known, she relinquishes fronting to more alters, although probably just Hanako and this third alter. (Spoilers for Chapter 4) Maybe this third alter bonds with Hina and Sakura, and when Toko confronts Sakura, it is thus third alter who hits Sakura. Just a thought. Also was not aware of Mondo's executions origins, which are horrifying. Watching you make a new execution was watching a genius at work, I hope you don't mind if I steal that idea. Also, as a non-binary person myself, I can wholeheartedly understand both interpretations of Chihiro's character, but I do appreciate the care you put into making the canon interterpretation less problematic. Overall a really great video with tons of care put into it. I'm happy to be here early, because I'm sure you will blow up if you keep making content with this quality! Very interested to see what you do next!
Thank you so much!! Admittedly the audio is the one thing that infuriated me throughout all this; my room acoustics are terrible and I spent a while fighting it in post before throwing up my hands and going "good enough" with how I edited it here. Your ideas for how to further incorporate Hanako into THH and really cool; admittedly, as I mentioned in the first video, this whole thing is technically already shot since it was supposed to be one 5-hour long video, but I'm trying to come up with ways to bring up ideas mentioned in the comments during these videos since people brainstorming their own rewrites it exactly what I wanted. Feel free to take my Mondo execution and run with it! I'm kinda flattered you want to steal it
Honestly I feel like for chapter 3 Yasehiro should be the victim and Ishamaru should survive I mean It would be a more compelling mystery since he has beef with Hifumi. That would also mean you would have to rewrite chapter 4 to fit Ishamaru in… plus Yasehiro would seem more believable to uh Force himself Onto Celeste ThanI Ishamaru who is known to be incorruptible. Plus Just make Yasehiro want to use the laptop To Help him be smarter about his scams or something.
Your redraws of Jill are pretty good, but I think you toned them down a little too much. I think she would look better if she borrowed some facial expressions from Kazuichi Soda instead.
I feel like chihiro shouldn’t be reduced to a trans character or non binary missing the point that chihiro wanted to get stronger in order to present as male again since clearly even tho he tried passing as female to avoid bullying he didn’t feel confortable staying that way forever. And he literally wanted accept himself as he was and get stronger enough to have the even tho you are male comments affect him. Love the rewrite tho apart from this but it’s also good.

Thank you!! This was definitely a wild (though really fun) chapter to rewrite and I'm glad my points came across well!
The ending of Mondo's execution was always really unsettling to me, mostly because of the overlapping tones. I had no idea it could get even worse.
I like the changes you’ve made, especially having Makoto just logic out Chihiro, as leaving the trial grounds is just so strange that I don’t think anyone talks about.
Okay but how the fk would
1) makoto find this out
2) get the others to agree with him
Also leaving the trail ground (more accurately a intermission) happens regularly in future games

I can't wait for you to fix chapter 3 of trigger happy havoc there's definitely a lot that needs to be fixed especially the trial and Celeste murder plan

I think its implied byakuya was in the library at most times, though nighttime would probably be free
Also yeah mondos execution was kind of weird without knowing what it was based on
