In this Student Spotlight lesson, I will try to help Pedro tackle John Frusciante's fast cross string alternate picking in "Snow (Hey Oh)".
This can be very challenging lick to get up to full speed, and most of the trouble comes from the picking hand.
At first, I will demonstrate a way of playing this lick without using alternate picking. There are more economical ways to play it, that will make it easier, but Frusciante probably wanted the rhythmic attack that the alternate picking gives the lick and went with that.
The things I will demonstrate to Pedro are first, balancing the picking hand so that you are not favoring either side. This will enable you feel like you are just brushing across the top of the string, and upstrokes and downstrokes will both have the same level of resistance. The picking motion itself is a very small rotation of the wrist and forearm.
After that is accomplished, we then focus on the wrist. As you can see in Pedro's great demonstration, he tends to alter the angle of his wrist to move across strings. This makes every string have a completely different pick attack and is hard to develop consistency. Instead, it is better to keep your wrist angle identical for each string and simply let your elbow carry you from string to string. The will make every string feel the same when it comes to the actual pick attack. It feels like you don't have much control at first, but you will soon find that it is easy to control and really frees up your picking hand.
After I talk about these concepts, I will then demsontrate a quick practice routine that can be done to systematically get this difficult lick under control.
Thanks for the video Pedro!

Carl...
I never thought u'd actually reply omg im so happy thank you so much, really helped me a lot:)
Glad I could help!
That's so cool that he got back to you! Absolutely love his lessons.
thats awesome he got back to you, love it!
So good!!!!
This is the best single video on guitar instruction I have ever seen----one problem, diagnosed with the cure simply explained and demonstrated.
These videos have been phenomenally helpful.
This is the kind of stuff that seems to be missing from most YT lessons. Cheers!
Ima start using my pick to PICK my nose so brilliant why i never thought of it
6stringBravo hahaha
The slight elbow movement helped me immediately with both consistency and speed! Thank You, good work!
These student spotlight videos are so much more helpful than I expected them to be. Thanks
I just came across this video after struggling with this song and not making any progress anymore. This was actually exactly my mistake aswel. Thank you for your very wel explained lessons Carl! You deserve every penny and i will support you on Patreon!
Carl, this was great, I had the same wrist twist problem and didn’t even realize it. Applying the elbow move now, tricky getting used to, but so more natural. Thank you.
Man, seriously helpful vid this one. I’ve spent a couple of years working solely on fingers and avoiding picks and now swapping concentration I’ve found it really noticeable the total difference in skills. This has been a great explanation, much clearer now.
Love this new series!! Thanks Carl...you are such a good teacher!!
Thank you! This helped my alternate picking speed immediately.
To me lowering my action on my guitar and messing with the action on each string dramatically helped with this and all riffs
It's proving to be battle trying to learn this song. I know i stepped out of my range with this but i still wanna keep at it. One thing though, I actually find that doing it in alternate picking is easier. I find that if i go ddud or pick down, i can't maintain the timing. I've still got a way to go, but for me, the alternate picking has made things significantly easier.
Best teacher of you tube. From Bangladesh 🇧🇩🇧🇩
Fuck, you just changed the entire way I approach alternate picking and I didn't even expect it. I've been so used to trying to never move my elbow that I never realized that's how you move to the next string.
This actually really helped me! Thank you!
Wow Buddy that was a perfect explanation, Exercise and Demonstration !! 😇
A brilliant lesson, very insightful and helpful. Thank you Carl!
You're best sir, I wish I could personally learn from you... I could've been one of the greatest guitarist, if only we had teachers like you!
Approximately a year or so ago, I learnt this riff. At first it was tough for me to get up to the album speed. But, yeah I could play the riff for a long time. After a couple or so hours of practice, I could play the riff quite smoothly up to speed. It's was just about locking and syncing and moving my whole body with the drums
REALLY HELPFUL STUFF MAN. woops caps but ill leave it like that lol because hell yes
Thanks for the lesson using elbow for picking movement. Great advice on crossing those strings
The lesson I've been looking for. Thanks man!
This serie is gold, thanks a lot for all this
First of all, thanks for helping the kid. I learnt something from it too, so thanks for that as well.
Man you make it look so easy. Ur a fantastic player dude
Thanks Carl! These video are very helpful. Keep on the good work.
Yet another very helpful vid. These are definitely improving my playing. Cheers!
i found that picking the first two notes of the first chord as a down stroke helps and then the last one as an upstroke, and then alternate picking on all the chord changes
This is great! I never considered this before!
That's awesome and really helpful ! thanks to you !
Pick slanting. Great vid Carl.
Snow is a great song by RHCP. Nice video on picking
Very helpful. Thank you.🤘🎸🤘
So helpful! Thanks!
huge help thanks Carl!!
very well explained. cheers
Hey Carl! This is was makes so much sense. I’m just wonder Bc it’s almost going again the whole anchoring ur Palm idea in a way then right? Also I am so caught up with whether I should be picking in an up and down motion which I see people doing or more or that turning motion you refer to. Which would be faster and more efficient?
Thank you so much!
HI.We can play it with alternate picking...but myself as mainly an economy picker I would play it straightly economy or DDDUDDU. Could also play it fingers in whcich it will resume imense the movement and be extremely easy for me....so some sugestions...rock on!
I go through using economy picking instead of alternate early in the lesson... but not strict economy picking like a mini-sweep because that won’t sound right.. more like chordal picking ala Al Dimeola where there is a bounce across the strings
I’m having trouble going from one chord to the next efficiently and quickly. Any tips?
Free Bird Keep practicing. :)
Thats a crazy hard riff
Thanks!
I just hope that some day I will be at least close at your playing level.
How is it that every one of these videos addresses a problem I am currently having?
Me too. Maybe I have a lot of problems?
In another video you suggest planting the fleshy part of the palm where low E string meets the bridge. In which situations you want it planted or move by moving the elbow of arm? Thank you.
That position is kind of like home base. But the key is to keep that wrist position across all strings by moving wrist into position using your elbow
Hey Carl can you do a lesson on the rock bottom solo by UFO I can’t seem to figure it out
I've got a bit a stupid question about this, I play now guitar for a bit more than 2 years never really took a close look at how the angle of the pick is when it hits the strings. My question, I've seen so many players picking that the pick is like \ this, towards the strings, I play with the pick like / to the strings, it bends my thumb a bit, I never really noticed it until I tried to get down fast picking songs like snow or for scuttle button. Does it really make a difference? Because my technique right feels like I can't get any faster.
Also don't move finger 1 when you move from 1st chord to the 2n ;-)
You dont even need this tutorial if u only play snow, just know the pattern and do it slow many times, thats it
Yep, he just used the guitar pick to pick his nose.
Damn im early
🤘👍👏☺
How to sweep pick?
If I remember correctly this is actually something that Carl hasn't covered yet
My next Student Spotlight covers sweep picking 😀
How this mf'er Carl play this particular song back to him and talk at the say same time????
love your lessons carl youre hot too!
and stop picking your nose with a .......pick.
