In this Student Spotlight lesson, I will help Patrick figure out how to eliminate string noise whenever he is performing bends or moving from one string to another.
Half of the battle of playing the guitar is keeping the strings that you don't want to be heard from vibrating. In order to accomplish this, you will use your index finger along with the muscles at the base of the inside of your palm to keep all of the unwanted strings quite.
The concept is pretty simple but requires a hand position (at least during a bend) that will facilitate proper muting. It will feel a bit awkward at the first, but eventually it will become second nature and you will gain more confidence in your playing knowing that you have complete control over the guitar strings.
I will start out by demonstrating the proper angle your fret-hand should be at during a bend. The angle not only helps the muting process, but also gives you more leverage, strength and control for the bend itself.
This angle will then allow the index finger to lightly collapse over the string or strings right above the one that has the bend being performed on it.
For all the other strings above the ones being muted by the index finger, your picking hand palm will do the muting.
When you are not bending and have a hand position with the fingers pointing more straight up, you simply allow the index finger to touch the adjacent string just above the string you are playing. Then the rest of the muting above that string will be done with the picking hand palm.
I hope this lesson helps you quickly start getting more control of those strings Patrick!

Carl...
This video is a lifesaver. Been struggling with this for a while. Thanks!
Carl is hands down the best player/teacher on youtube. He is an incredible player and makes things look so effortless while explaining things clearly. There are other youtube channels out there for more beginner stuff, but for intermediate to advanced things Carl stands alone IMHO. Keep up the great work Carl. Would love to see you play out sometime!
Him and steve stine. Every guitar player needs to learn from both of them.
Ever watch Bernth?
This should be one of the very 1st things a guitar tutor should teach a student but most don’t. It’s quite hard to re-learn finger placement later to include this technique.
Imagine your driving instructor teaching you gears and acceleration but not the brake pedal! Ridiculous!
--Thank you for another concise and useful lesson. --
This is exactly what being an experienced player is all about. Thanks for passing your knowledge down to us.
This is a dream come true video. Being a beginner I encounter many such problems. Thank you Carl as always.
Thanks for watching Kalyan!
GuitarLessons365 Hello... how can I sound fuller in a three man band(bass, drums and guitar)? I play guitar but I want to make my band sound better and fuller. Thank You
Russell Shahi You can use D sus2 shape in drop tunings on any fret or you can use breaking benjamin chord etc etc
@@lazzRussell have a lead guitarist and rhythm guitarist
Geezzzzzz........ Just today I was trying to see how I can stop this EXACT issue that I am having. Thanks Carl. I definitely try this tomorrow
This technique is good and all. The problem comes when you need to use your index finger right after finishing the bend, e.g. for a hammer on. Suddenly, the muting of the string by the index finger will be working against you since you produce sound as soon as you "leave" or stop touching the muted string.
Was facing this issue very recently and this video is like a rainbow amongst dark clouds. Thank you!
Wow, you blew me away. Such gret knowledge, thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much! That was my major issue, I was able to learn everything but my strings used to ring out whenever I DID NOT want them to and it was very frustrating! I am now practicing this every day and hopefully it's gonna become second nature quickly! Thanks again for this great video :)
Hands down the most helpful lead guitar lesson !
Great instruction Carl, really nice job
These tips are Awesome...love this series of vids!! Thanx Carl...you rock \m/
I'm struggling with this as a beginner. This video is a huge help, thank you!
Great video! Just impressed with the details. Can't believe I hadn't seen this channel earlier.
Wonderful explanation and ideas! Thank you very much, Carl!
These student spotlights are great! Thanks for the awesome videos, very helpful
I learned this technique a few days ago, was kinda mindblowing for me, hahaha, had this issue for a long time.. But thanks for your lesson!
Carl is hands down the best teacher on youtube. The camera angles and resolution, to the patient explanation and clear speaking voice. He really is a top notch teacher!
So friggin' weird! I was working on some country-style bends, and was having this *exact* problem, when I got notice for this video. *Thanks Carl,* and your viewer for the question.
Struggling with this now I’ve only been playing for a week. So it’s understandable I know perfection takes a long time of practice and dedication. Some days im better at playing than others, one day it comes to me easily the next I can’t bare to hear myself play any longer
Thank you, thank you. This has changed my playing
thanks a ton. I've never seen such a detailed explanation on any other channel.
I have found that rolling back the volume knobs helps and that older distortion pedals like some of the older MXR ones dont create all this over the top or oversaturated distortion and this eliminates a lot of adjacent string noise yet gives a nice sustain on single notes for lead work.
Holy crap I was having so much frustration and trouble with the bends. This helps so much.
This is a godsend. I've been making a great effort to remove string noise, and thought that the bends just had to do with bad precision, but turns out there's always a simpler fix to these problems. Now to get used to it...
Thank you so much for the help Carl, Its really helping me out!
Patrick Mccarry Rubí thanks for asking the question we all needed answers too!🙌🏾
Thank you Carl .I have been following you and been able to learn great solos from you..please make a solo tutorial of dance of death..I have searched it everywhere but ain't able to find it..
Lovely video!
Thank you so much
Everything explained so nicely
All my doubts have been cleared
Thank you for this! 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
This is the information I've been looking for. Thank you
thanks man. this vid is what ive been lookign for for quite a long time!
Awesome carl! Thanks a million man! I love all your videos! I needed to know that also! You're the man!...
Thank you,
I' m learning a While She Sleeps lead at the moment and I' m getting the ringing when leaving a string. This really helped.
The irony is I've spent time consciously teaching myself not to touch the other strings with my fretting fingers to have clean sounding chords lol.
Obviously there are different fretting techniques required for strumming open chords vs picking single note leads.
Thank you again. \m/
I have so much trouble with this. Thank you 😊
REALLY excellently taught lesson! A gold mine of valuable and practical techniques. You really gave me some great tools here, and helped simplify concepts / solve issues for me that I've been troubleshooting for a while. Interestingly enough, I also inadvertently (vastly) improved my string bending vibrato (a real shortcoming in my technical toolbelt) while working on the index finger muting you demonstrated. It was a very unexpected two for one special! Placing my index finder over the top strings during a bend (to mute) must create the right amount of leverage to get that vibrato sounding strong and full. Previously I was only muting with the tip of my index, and my bent vibratos sounded weird and weak.. Many thanks Carl!
Great video. I already knew that I had to mute the strings I don't play, but couldn't find a simple yet effective way to do so. I tried muting with the index finger once but it felt so weird that I tried to mute everything with the picking hand. Now seeing this video I will give the index finger another shot - if it works for you, it will surely work for me as well. Thank you for this series, it helps A LOT.
Did it work?
Thanks i was struggling with strings noise , now i know what to do ,you are my favorite guitar teacher
This is exactly my problem. Thanks RUclips recommendations
Thank you so much for those videos Carl. You're such a great teacher, and helped me a lot along the way of playing the guitar.
Nice one been trying to wade through your shine on lessons and I can't seem to stop crashing into other strings on the bends this helps alot thanks
Great info. Really liking these student spotlights.
That shit was clear asf. Thanks dude you rock
This takes practice and it's so overlooked by your 8th degree guitar players when they're teaching lessons on RUclips appreciate it Carl thumbs up bro
This student spotlight series is really helpful and practical. Thanks Carl
I watched your bend video and go all the way across with my index. This has been very effective at reducing noise so thanks! HOWEVER, when doing a bend followed by a quick pulloff means that my index has to come back down to play the note very quickly. I often get the string above to bend when trying to do this. Any tips? Thanks!
try the index hitting the G and the DAE muted by the palm, one option he showed in the vid, helped me a ton with the same problem of getting the index back down quickly
Carl, you are amazing. Thank you so much.
Took me LOOOOOOONNNG enough to find the answer to my question .
I always hear other strings when I'm tapping. Especially in hot for teacher (that might be because Im a kid w/ smallish hands). Do you know how to eliminate that
Thank you so much \m/, Mr. Carl Brown.
I was getting frustrated with the low e string ringing out on a solo without going near it. Ill try this technique thanks.
These student spotlights are great for the little nuances of a beginner, keep it going Carl.. Could we get a BOC - then came the last days of may lesson? Cheers
I hate when string noise happens when i switch chords so much that I dont even play my strat....
amazing tip!!
I only had the problem with head phone and I don't turn the Amp up very high, thanks for your lesson.
This is what we needed ... perfect 💖
I really like this series. Thanks for sharing. :)
Thank you! I almost gave up and decide to get those muting straps which i know isnt cool
Hey carl and how do you do to mute when you have to do an unison bend? You can't use your index finger, do you use your middle finger or your palm? Nice video, I like this students series
Really good
Carl just casually instantly fixes my bends
A lot of people say you have to mute the adjacent string with the pointer finger. I have skinny fingers and Don't.
Guitar players like Marty Friedman, Zack Wilde and Michelangelo Batio don't mute everything while picking. They hardly mute at all.
I hatethe sound of my fingers sliding on the fretboard when I play heavy riffs.. Sometimes they are just inavoidable, so is there a good way to edit them out? How do pros deal with that thing?
Love your lessons Carl. I have a request. How about a lesson for My Champion by Alter Bridge?
Thank you
Great stuff
New player here. The first finger muting the strings during a bend is great and all but after the bend how do you play the note where the first finger would be if it wasn't muting the other strings?
How do I mute when in the case of playing sweep picking where my index needs to move for the next note and is unable to mute?
Great video - Now I have to go and re-learn guitar again
This is one of my biggest problems, string noise when i bend or lift my finger off the string.. UGH so frustrating.
Nice! How do we get rid of that microphone noise scratching against your chest? 😂
I found Lume' uh....was the strangest commercial I wish I could have shared.
its all to do with string tension too have played guitars with more string tension and u dont after mute at all
My name is Robert Beardsley I have the same string noise and can't seem to fix it maybe adjusting the height of the strings
Thanks for the video! My noise comes from changing chords, like G to D and the G and B strings keep playing between the change of chords. Really annoying lol
Is there a way to stop That? Thanks!
Good muting of coarse. I think there's another secret the guitar gods use: expensive compression, expensive signal splitter. Re-amping the signal 6 times after it's been "filtered".
I can see where that helps a lot.
It seems to be Steve Via's and joe Satriana's well kept secret.
I faced the same problems when I started. I thought it would be imposible to mute the strings, but without noticing you start doing it.
“Why is that and how in the world do we get rid of that” - Carl
I don’t know why but that was too funny XD
so, what if I'm going down more than 1 string..? there's has to come a point where all fingers leave the surrounding strings, and while lifting even a finger that was only muting a string, that string will make so much noise, I have no idea how to fix this. What you showed in the vid I thought was just obvious so it didn't really help much
woooow ok. that helps a lot
Carl, most guitar players recommend a 45 degree pick angle but that tends to make a loud, scratchy pick sound for me on the two thickest strings (I'm assuming it's their coiled texture). Do you know what I'm talking about? Help!
could you please do a video on keeping the left hand relaxed during fast runs and licks namely with the second solo of rock you like a hurricane
ps i would send a video but i just broke the radius in my right wrist
Carl, how is the noise from the fingers of your fretting hand. I get a lot
of scratchy sounds even though Im lifting my fingers but, there is a
little drag because....face it theres never going to be complete
lifting when your playing fast. Never had that problem when I was
younger....Im picking up a guitar after not playing for over 20
years...everything is new to me as far as the electronics. Im using
D'Addario strings... could that be it?
Do you lay your palm directly on the bridge or slightly in front?
13 gauge strings and tight tension strings have no problem what ever technique i bend
How do you eliminate bad string squeak during sliding power chords?
What helped me is more laying my finger flat -- using the pad part of your finger to slide rather then the tip
It becomes very difficult when it's played very fast. How do you do it on Crazy train fast descending pass G 4-2-0, D 4-2-0, A 4-2-0. It just sounds horrible.
Whenever I do a high E bend on like the 22nd fret, I'm always hearing the B and G string ring out now matter what I do. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
Hi i have a question why do i have string noises eventhough i mute them.. the sound its like natural harmonics i guess my finger is near them.. but how do i avoid accidental harmonics?
I really have a hard time trem picking low notes but the high notes are easy any tips ?
Top demais!!!!
Hi there! I am actually past the problem and solution outlined in this video, so I was wandering is there a way to eliminate unwanted noise during legato technique? On hammer-ons one is "batting" on the fretboard thus making it shaky which results in open strings making noise, and during pull-offs, you just can't not to touch lower string no matter how low your string action is. Thank you!
I don't seem to get this problem on a bend when I bend even without muting the strings. I get noise in other places, but never the bend. Perhaps I am doing something without thinking
So happy I found you . Please don't just do metallic lol You are so awesome especially for beginners.
❤❤❤
I get a lot of noise every time i lift my palm from the bridge
As you say half the battle is muting other strings. I thought my guitar set up was the problem.
I used to think my strings rang out and were loud bc I had a crappy guitar. Lol
what if my fingers aren't big enough or is this just me not placing my fingers right
Paul gilbert doesnt have that issue
