  • Far off the coast of mainland Quebec lies a remote Maritime archipelago that is one of the true gems of "La Belle Province". Nestled in the heart of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, roughly halfway between Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island, the stunning Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine (the Magdalen Islands) is one of Eastern Canada's premier attractions. These are the Quebec Maritimes, far from the hustle and energy of Montreal and Quebec City, and home to a rich Acadian heritage and some of the oldest Francophone communities in North America.
Imagine a place where rolling sand hills meet azure Atlantic waters; an island with towering red cliffs that spill down to red sand beaches. Here, roads are flanked on both sides by the crashing sea, with narrow spits of sand connecting the archipelago's six inhabited islands. On those islands you'll find welcoming Quebecois Acadian hospitality, offering some of the best local gastronomy this side of France; artisinal fromageries (cheese factories), fumoirs (fish smokeries), and brasseries (breweries) can be found everywhere, along with some of the freshest seafood in the Maritimes. Beyond filling your belly, the island is replete with amazing beaches (the best in Canada!) and some of the most incredible and accessible coastal hiking opportunities in the nation, along with several historic lighthouses.
In this full-length compilation, I begin my journey around this amazing archipelago with a ride aboard the CTMA Ferry from Souris, PEI, sailing 5 hours north to reach Cap-aux-Meules, the largest town in the Maggie's. From there, I begin my tour of the central and southern islands of Cap-aux-Meules, Havre-Aubert, and Havre-aux-Maisons, stopping at the historic Acadian fishing settlement of La Grave for a cappucino at the quaint Cafe de la Grave, visit the Fromagerie Pied-du-Vent for some local cheese, try some smoked herring at Fumoir D'Antan, and try some of the best microbrews on the island at Microbrasserie À l'abri de la Tempête. I also take you to the Phare Borgot and Phare Cap-Alright lighthouses, as well as check out some of the rugged red cliffs at Belle Anse & the Plage Dune de Sud beach. After, I head north to the remote island of Ile de Grand Entree to visit the renowned Auberge la Salicorne - an all-inclusive eco-resort within easy reach of the dunes and hiking trails that define the northern end of the archipelago. This vibrant destination is truly one of Quebec's greatest treasures, and I hope you'll put it on your travel bucket list for the coming year!

Interesting place. Planning out my trip to eastern Canada right now (my final 4 Provences). I do have a few days to fill in, so might have to add a quick trip over to Magdalen.

Definitely worth a detour! It's an incredible little archipelago and at only 80 km long, it's very easy to see everything the islands have to offer even during a short visit. Cheap ferry ride from PEI, too!

Hey hey!! dont tell everyone our hidden secrets... haha
Its a paradise I love to go in the summer, its my 3rd trip 🙂
The beaches are amazing , close to the type you would see in Mexico, (old harry, Sandy hook), the food is great and people are amazing and very friendly.
If you want to stay in the peak time of tourism, plan way ahead if your not a camping person (easier to find spots).
Its not very very hot and windy so perfect to be outside without getting cooked in a microwave...
For people that love wind sports (kite board) you will be in heaven.

It's an amazing archipelago and I was so excited that I was invited to discover it first hand. I'll definitely be a return visitor! If only it was a bit closer to where I live. One of the best-kept secrets in Canada, 100%.

The restaurant looks like it has those old industrial lighting fixtures that taverns like to use. That's awesome.

It was a beautiful space! Breakfast was even better, but I forgot my camera to document the meal - oops.

5 hours on a ferry? That boat should have done nice things on it.

I think they had a movie room, but it was pretty low key. I was surprised that they offer private rooms for such a short journey. But all in all, really comfortable experience - for less than $30 USD, I was very impressed.
