João Antunes that role is taken much more seriously in hots. The game is heavily team fight based and so you become the lifeline of the team. You can heal incredible amounts if you play correctly, so you can kind of carry your team to victory by out healing the other healer or damage of the team (although not to say healers will make people unkillable). All the healers are quite unique and play differently from the last.

I also prefer HoTs over LoL/Dota mainly because of Comeback mechanics! As you mentioned in LoL/Dota if you fall behind in early game it's really hard to comeback! usually the game gets one sided in the mid/late game but this not the case in HoTS. You can ALWAYS comeback to the game in hots especially if you can win 1-2 team fights in late game.

To be honest the thing I enjoy the most about HOTS is the role-playing part.
Back when I played LoL I mained top lane, preferably Tank role, as I enjoy being in the frontlines soaking damage and using powerful CC to shut down enemy carries. It used to be like this back in season 1-3. But as the game is right now picking a tank doesn't really mean you'll BE a tank. I've had LoL games where I played (i.e) Ornn, a character who's supposed to be a tough frontliner. I'd be amazed at how much damage I would be able to dish out at my oponent whenever I was winning lane and, on the other hand, how squishy and worthless I'd feel whenever I was losing lane.
HOTS does this completely different. If you picked a tank you'll feel like a tank, no matter if you're winning or losing, your role is to soak damage and the game makes it feel like you're actually being a super buffy and hard to take down character. Or if you're playing a mage, you'll be dealing absurd amounts of damage from the backlines while having no escape abilities that make you insanely hard to kill.
With this said, I think HOTS does a really good job making you feel like your role actually matters, it's pretty much impossible for you to be a tank and deal tons of damage, or be a mage and having tons of mobility. It's easier to counterplay even when you're losing. You don't feel like a hopeless dummy on the battlefield getting smashed by that one player who got camped by the jungler during the first 15 mins of the game.

Played League since 2010. I liked the game, and it was fun for a long time. But I always found that the game was too explosive. Either you're dominating, or being dominated, there was little in-between. Fights didn't last long because you'd die within seconds of the fight starting. A lot of champions felt forced. I'm not entirely sure what it was but I wasn't a big fan of the champions they started coming out with later on in the games life.
HotS just feels good to play. All of the heroes are nostalgic, but they also just feel good to play, nothing feels forced. It's to the point where every time I play I like to imagine what character they'll bring into the game next (personally hoping for the D2 Druid, Baal, Lady Vashj, Mannoroth, a Reaper and/or a named Zerg unit like Blaze or Lt. Morales as the next hero). I know the Nexus based heroes like Orphea and Qhira aren't everyone's favorite, but I like that they were added to the game, gives the devs a bit more creative freedom if they come up with a cool hero and kit.

I like that there are multiple ways to win on most maps and that the game flows more like you are playing hockey or basketball/soccer etc... with your team. I do think they need to populate the unranked more maybe by having only 1 ban phase or dropping/combining quick match modes in some way.

  • @jeosh.

The only thing I love in LOL is their ideas and lore for every Champions.
I love how they create a characters.
I love Fiddlesticks because I love scarecrow, I love Shaco because I love Joker, I love TahmKench and Maokai I don't know, I just enjoy to use them, I love Thresh, Pyke and Jhin only because of their badass appearance. I love the ideas of them. Like Illinoa, Kindred, etc.
    .
But when it comes on gameplay. HOTS is my fav to all MOBA. Most unique gameplay to all MOBAs that I played before, only last 15-20 mins, but it's full pack of actions, unlike other MOBA that last 30-60mins and only have few clash.
Some mechanics of HOTS is very easy and simple such as lack of need to last Hits that means you don't need a money and everyone gets XP from creeps/minions.
Choosing Talents instead of having to buy items means you don't have to focus farming on the first 10-15mins on the game because you aren't starved to have a money to buy Items to get strong before you fight, they jump into action much faster than others.
More team fighting, less laning, HOTS is largely decided by how well each team can work as a unit instead of one player carrying.
No time wasting for farming, soloing, etc.
But still the game required lots of skills and practice.
And lastly, in HOTS when you're losing? You usually aren't losing for long because like I said it last only 15-20 sometimes 30mins, and you're quickly into the next game, unlike in DOTA/LOL/HON where games are 30-60 mins, people rage when they feel like one of their limited games that night is ruined, and they have slowly watch their team lose for almost an hour.
Feels like more wastes time when you lose in other MOBAs

    1. And yes, in HotS objectives are more important.
In LoL doing objectives is risky and sometimes unneccesery.
In HotS NOT doing objectives is risky.
    2. In LoL jungle feels like just a farm for junglers, even buffs doesn't contribute that much to team and ganks well in HotS becouse of mounts you have more ganks even without jungler. And merceneries feel like they does contribute much to team, use of them is very strategic, it's te best way of reseting lanes without staying in lane, and also great distrat factor. I feel bad for them... League is just a sad excuse of a game now... after the Chinese bought RIOT the game has become a money scam that caters only to pro play while the normal casual players are screwed royally, being one shot to oblivion every 2 minutes by the obscene damage that all characters have nowadays... sometimes tanks one shot squishies literally at level 6 sometimes... you know, the character that is supposed to be there to BLOCK DAMAGE and do less damage than damage dealers... being an ADC is just a joke... you're a "glass cannon" that is in reality a glass slingshot cause you barely do more damage than other damage dealers unless you have the reflexes and positioning of a pro player while dying 10 times easier than bruisers... so yeah... glass cannon my ass...
All in all League used to be the king of MOBAs but anyone that plays it right now and can't see this game addicts you by frustrating you on purpose and making you feel cheated and forcing you to try and beat the cheat is an imbecile... I'm sorry but I've been playing video games since the 90s and I feel like League is insulting my intelligence when it says it's a balanced and competitive game... nothing is balanced, nothing is well made and everything is broken and overpowered to give stupid kids easy kills and convince them they're skilled while they're not... the success was spoon fed to them by people that want to scam them to buy skins...
Anyway... I'm downloading Hots as we speak hoping I can get into MOBAs again with a game that is more fair, balanced, enjoyable and fun and not just a toxic mess that is toxically unbalanced, forcing the community to be toxic out of frustration with the broken gameplay... I hope Hots is worth it cause MOBAs are fun as a genre...

      1) it forces you to play as a team... the whole team levels up together so you can't be the selfish guy who will "carry" the team alone cause you need the whole team to succeed... which also makes the game less toxic...
      2) the characters actually fit their roles... tanks are there to actually tank damage and not kill... damage dealers are easily killed but do a shitload of damage and bruisers are nicely in-between... and supports are really supportive.. there is no tank/support/assassin/bruiser "I do it all" champion...
3)The different maps have different objectives to win which makes it fun and not too repetitive...
I haven't played in a while but the time I played was actually pretty enjoyable... especially coming from LoL... you can also try Dota 2... if you don't play ranked Dota 2 has become a lot less toxic... most normal games I've played recently were quite friendly which is insane since Dota 2 was considered the most toxic game on planet earth...

Because if your team slacks off and start dying or even trading 1:1 your team will lose out in the EXP department. Giving the losing team a chance to Comeback.

HotS is far better than its counterparts which is what hurts the most; the management at Blizzard is SO horrendous that they failed to just put this better game out sooner. They over monetized the characters as well which created more hesitation to switch games. If you've been grinding through LoL for years then why would you want to restart in HotS?
The business decisions at Blizzard killed the best MOBA while the developers shaved off almost every stupid quirk in the genre. Last hitting, single map, items/shop/gold/equipment, grinding to get said gold, slow movement between combat, and overly long games. They even gave the support characters a chance to be great at doing something besides sitting back and healing. Many support characters could also be play makers which made them more fun than just a stupid "heal me" character. The shared experience made a less toxic environment while quick match also made it more relaxed. Heroes of the Dorm was fun and the skins were great. They just over monetized it too early and under supported it.

Items truly ruin the game for all healers / supporters.
You are NOT ALLOWED to buy your items. YOU HAVE TO BUY wards and shit for the carry. You arent even allowed to last hit. So in late game you have 15k hp, no damage, no assist items. Nothing. The enemy hard carry one move kills you and you have to wait.

Well, the fact that higher damage (necessarily carries) can kill creeps easier means that they get to get the golds and buy items. If you look at the standard or pro matches in LOL or Dota, supports have almost no items unless all kills are with 5 men. So no one picks support unless they wanna do some "cool" stuff with their 3 min cooldown abilities/items. Note that in standard high-rank matches, usually supps make the calls so it makes sense that they should not be focused on micro-managing last hits etc, and more control the flow the game like managers, but if you are not high-rank (which majority of population isnt and would take you at least 2 years to reach that), you can't do anything.
Also, I absolutely agree with objective perspective, in Dota and LOL, in many cases games become PVE, literally carries farming, supps poking each other or warding. In pubs, literally carry has 30 kills, but zero tower damage.
PS: I don't play dota anymore (around 2000 hours) but even nowadays when I watch pro players streaming, literally almost every game there is major grief :D so guess what's happening in low ranks.

With quick match in HOTS the matchmaking is a big issue. If you want to play at any decent level you have to go to ranked. Nobody plays unranked so you'll never get a match. Playing in QM will give you matches missing a tank, healer or both. It can be fun sometimes, but usually it's just a chaotic bloodbath and the team that has more kills wins. Also, it's infuriating to queue as main tank/healer in QM because people don't lane when they need to and you can't leave the 4-man. If you like the chaos, just play ARAM, it's shuffle pick from 3 heroes and there's no big map objectives.

They are so complicated, grindy, matches take forever, super hard to get into, etc. It seems like there is zero reason to play those over something like HoTS based off of this description. It's simpler, the matches don't take as long, it's faster paced, what on earth is better about League than HoTS??

After reading this comment it took me a minute to actually realize "why I like league". I really like heroes of the storm because I like team fighting and the balance between it all. But I guess what has me in league is when you do win. The video brings up how you can grind in the beginning and still lose 40 minutes later which sucks, but when you win it's satisfying too. Getting ahead in lane or getting other lanes ahead is fun. But as someone who wasn't the best at the game, I could often get ahead and then fall down later because I'd rather go for fights (that I'd win) or go to gank a lane (I often played jungle and support) instead of farming. And that's why I like hots, I don't have to spend time trying to last hit or anything. Not to mention runes and items. I would have to look up builds and such for my champions in league. Figure out what runes work for the champion and what items to use. While hots I can build my hero based on how I play them. In league I could back and then buy an item that really just gives me some extra stats and maybe an extra bonus. In hots I can level up and make my abilities more useful.

League + Dota solo player's concerns about HotS. First of all, thanks for the talents, yoink, this is now a staple in Dota, really cool stuff. Now, i, as a generic moba player, want to be able to intentionally use the weaknesses of the enemy draft and team synergy. In HotS (public matches, if you are solo), you choose a character, and then it's all random. Will your team have a holy trinity in it? Will you get a synergy? What if your character gets countered 3 times? Idk, skill issue i guess. Then, talk about holy trinity. (dd - kills stuff, tank - enables everyone by intentionally getting the damage, heal - sustains tanks hp). The game is literally built on team on team interactions and the concept of holy trinity. There is no concept of 1 v 5, at all, whatsoever. The dps characters are intentionally weaker and usually filled with backloaded and sustained damage, so that they would need a tank to enable them and a healer for the tank to not int. They are equally important, and everything falls apart when you remove even one character., Also, the ultimates are absolutely pathetic in comparison to league and dota, because they are balanced around the fact that there is always a state when one team has 5 of them, and the other one has none. So yes i just basiclly want to be the main character that does a truckload of damage with big buttons, and i can't do it in hots, the buttons are smol and i'm not a tank player

Although HOTS could use a forfeit button like LOL even though I have had plenty of games that we turned the tides against all odds. But still there is the rare case that winning is actually impossible when you have 2 or more trolls or someone really bad plus a troll and so on. I've seen it all.

i think the big problem is the time you have to spend on the games , something people nowadays don't have that much .
if you wanna play dota 2 , you have to learn the effects , the stacking , the skills , the passives and how well they work against certain heroes to play efficiently .
if you wanna play league it's more of the same with the only difference that it is a little bit fast paced and it has 140 champions even more than dota 2 , each one with passives , effects , mechanics , etc plus runes .
with HOTS you don't have any of these problems because everything depends on your talents and your soaking . Also , HOTS is more Macro oriented than the previous games and the matches don't take too long to end . like i am not going to spend 1 hour of my life to learn only the mechanics and passives of each character and item .

THE Most balanced moba game EVER. No items and no universal runes means no broken champs and no weak champs. league of legends has about 200 champs and if you want to win you have to abuse max 15-20 champs that are meta. If you main something else, you lose because its weak not because you are bad. Most of the games are decided by single players on their lane. for e.g. YOU grind minions on top and hold your lane for 20 minutes, but enemy jungler camped bot and fed them. You cant leave the lane, but you have to and still you just come to watch enemy end the game.

@Sixten Ålin so you are reliant on your team cooperation in the team game. I actually miss the part where that is wrong. But you obviously miss the point of what is unbalanced. Unbalanced game is where you pick one hero over and over again because you can not lose with it. IF you can not counterpick and counterplay then its unbalanced.

    • @damiankovanda4641
      @damiankovanda4641 3 года назад +1

@Sixten Ålin i believe the role of draft pick is to prevent enemy from picking the strongest composition. If you let enemy the heroes that are stronger on the map free and you dont pick/ban them, then its just game knowledge you lack. But if you take every hero individually, it has its strengths and weaknesses. Healers and healing reductions, marksmans and blinds, tanks and their lack of mobility, mages and their low defenses. Every hero can be defeated, you just need to implement the best strategy.

definitely a lighthearted game, but the depth is really not there. especially if you're playing solo then you just feel like 0 impact in games where team doesnt cooperate. league feels the opposite where one good player can carry four noobs. league is really a game for people who want to tryhard and sweat, and that's because of how much depth and skill expression it has. of course this makes league super toxic and unfun to lose in. however hots also has shitty experiences with randoms so idk.
also IMO hots is not a "true" moba, if you take away the economy focus of the game then it's not following the original moba recipe. And once you really get to learn in depth how mobas work, you will learn that economy and macro is the true fulfillment in this game, the real reason it's fun, not just because of top down clicker action combat. If you took out gold & made xp shared in LoL, it would be VERY bland and repetitive. Even the arcade modes in LoL have gold/personal xp/snowballing because of this fact.
But yeah considering how difficult it is to learn the fundamentals of MOBA, be it dota league or smite or whatever - it's really frustrating and not fun for noobs/casuals. I dont consider this to be necessarily a bad thing though, because every great competitive pursuit is the same. real life sports like tennis or boxing are absolute nightmares for beginners but the payoff is amazing when you do get the hang of it. same with chess.
Imo HOTS is kind of a sad story to me because the devs had good intentions. They thought they'd just take the classic MOBA experience and take out the things that were "obviously bad", the things that players claimed to not like. Unfortunately reality is, game design is never that simple, and they wound up taking out the life and soul of what makes a moba addicting and engaging, and managed to make the worst performing modern blizzard title. Seriously imagine if they just stuck to the classic dota formula, even if less original. I daresay the game would still be growing as of 2022 and beyond.

I will say that in heroes of the storm you find more people who dont know how to play the game and this really affects the experience, making it quickly go from absurdly fun to plain terrible. I bring this up because the main culprit of this situation is the quickmatch system. I completely disagree with you on point 5: There IS a meta and you cant just play whatever and expect to win. Quickmatch doesnt let people learn what their heroes are good for and it even gives them the wrong lessons by giving them wrong perspectives on how a hero functions in certain matchups/maps. Theres an absurd amount of people who dont understand how a solo laner or mid laner works and its understandable because if you only play quickmatch you'll never have the opportunity to see or even practice them.

I liked the last point of your video, because it proves that there was no thought behind those other games, Blizzard staff use their brains and are creative people, valve and riot just mixed matched a couple of thing and shited their game changing the least amount of things, think about this, the first dota mod had items, because warcraft 3 already had them, and it was a viable way to improve your character within the limitations of the editor, get it, the item sistem was born out of limitations found in an editor, with certain default assets, and pre established rules. By the way I liked that blizzard stole the bushes idea it's a nice fuck you to riot, that's the only thing riot did, and a stupid rune mechanic taken from every rpg ever, and champions design by bad artist, I mean, did you see that concept art?, and they also stole the idea of good cinematics, riot cinematics make no sense though because there is no lore, oh wait, there is, and it suck and it's badly written, but you have to give it to them with that bush mechanic, credit where credit is due, well done riot, well done you actually did something.
P.S: I'm sorry I bashed riot so much, but I do it out of principle, as I said in my other comment I hate when people get away with blatantly stealing ideas in such a grotesque manner, just makes me so sick, the ONLY reason LoL succeeded is because it was free and easy to get and didn't have much requirements for PCs, riot hit the jackpot, there is no merit.

I don't really agree with almost all points, I do respect your opinion but like a lot of thing are imo bad with hots like the matchmaking (ranked or not) the lack of managment or strategy. I mean I just love to be able to pick an ap champ and go like, i'mma be an adc lmao nobody gonna stop me to do a soraka banana or even ap ashe which is good btw.
And overall the lack of interest the dev have for hots ... the keep making champ from time to time to earn a bit of money but they all break the game, looking at you DW ...
But i guess i like the lack of toxicity in hots but that it.

The comparison you made between talents and runes was dumb. Talents are the alternative to the items, not runes...
But yes, the last hitting is simply boring and low paced. In HotS, there is no filler. You're focused on fighting the enemy team from the beginning to the end

It's funny how biased your opinion is, I mean, it's your opinion and I can't take that away from you, nor that i'd want to do that, however, at least make some valid points. Things you're saying just make me say, that you're bad at mobas in general, and Hots is a game, that is forgiving. If you die in Dota, you donate enemy a huge amount of gold + you lose some of your own. That's a huge punishment. In league, you donate enemy 300 gold, you lose experience and the time to farm. Again, a big punishment for your mistake, as it should be. In hots? What do you lose ? You dont contribute to fights and xp sharing, sure, but only thing enemy team gets is experience, nothing else. There is no other way, they get stronger by capitalizing on your mistakes. Now tell me, what is more fair?
Another thing. You say you often feel powerless in league, i get that, we all do, from a time to time, the game is just unwinnable. But then again, if you're good enough, you know how to play the game, you got the knowledge, the mechanics, you can get fed, ahead and carry it through gaining the upper hand by punishing opponent's mistakes and getting a lot of gold for yourself. You cannot do that in Hots, can you ? In hots, if your comp is not good enough or your heroes straight up suck, what are you gonna do ? Capture a bruiser camp? Thats not gonna win you the game, you're just gonna lose. Sure it's gonna take 10 minutes instead of 20, but still. A loss is a loss. Change my mind...

How much your death will be punitive in hots is based on how the opponent team will capitalize your lost time. Thanks to objectives and camps a single death could be deciseve, especially in late game. You also have to consider the fact that without objects and individual hero levels its really hard, if not impossible, to win a 4v5 teamfight.
Your second point makes more sense to me but, indeed, draft is a foundamental part of the game; quickmatches are not competitive, they are just to learn heroes or have easy fun. In conclusion, in hots the key mechanic is how much you succeed in the cooperation with your team; it could not matter if the heroes of your team are bad, if everyone does his job in the proper way, there is always the possibility to win the game.

xp in hots is basically gold in other mobas. If you die, enemies will get xp from your death. Can't see what you mean. Plus there are not really straight up counters, since the talents can change based on enemies. Funnier game experience

Almost no buybacks in HOTS, almost no teleporting back into action. You die, you lose momentum, the game is short so your death counts a lot.
