    I work in pro AV and we've been using NDI for awhile. Lots of broadcast style cameras and switchers support NDI now as well. The is the first more pro-sumer hardware device that I've seen added it in. It actually fixes the major reason that I bought the Rodecaster Pro II over the Mackie DLZ Creator for my home use, which is that I've got two computers on my desk, and with the RCPII it has two USB ports, so I can run USB to both machines and have them come in (and out) as separate devices. The DLZ couldn't do that until now. Your secondary machine could just be setup with NDI in and out as your primary audio devices and you could control everything off the DLZ. Pretty sweet!

      I have a Q-SYS Core doing everything for my streaming setup. I'm about to integrate a Yamaha DM3-D into my setup so I have Dante feeding into the setup. NDI Is great but I like to take advantage of more robust AVoverIP solutions since NDI has a lot of latency compared to a solution from ZeeVee which zero frame loss. Thankfully ZeeVee has Dante options that can live on their 10G AVoverIp network. Thankfully I don't spec any Birddog equipment because I can't tell you how many birddog NDI devices I have in service right now...just sad.

  • @lsdave
    @lsdave Год назад +36

    Looks like NDI is 50-75ms latency, which is VERY noticeable. Dante or AES67 does the same, but at 2ms latency. NDI is typically sending video and audio together, so the latency isn't a big deal usually, but once you separate video and audio with it, you will definitely see some lip sync issues.

    • @xzibit8614
      @xzibit8614 Год назад +4

      With NDI | HX yes. NDI (no video) has Dante like latency when used audio only, or NDI | HX3 when used alongside 4k60fps video

      Dante also requires dedicated hardware codecs, so it’s faster / more stable, but can’t be added after-sale unless it’s via a card slot or as a separate piece of outboard gear. I’m not sure if AES67 requires dedicated hardware or if it can be implemented all in software as codecs.

    • @lsdave
      @lsdave Год назад +4

      @@seanp2k617 Dante does not require dedicated hardware. There is software based Dante, like their Dante virtual sound card for PCs as well as software based Dante in Q-SYS hardware.

    • @harrybilney9096
      @harrybilney9096 Год назад

      That's not actually true. Dante can be added via software although you will experience more latency due to the lack or hardware encoding. The minimum latency for Dante Virtual Soundcard (as an example) is 4ms.@@seanp2k617

  • @harrybilney9096
    @harrybilney9096 Год назад +10

    Interesting choice by Mackie to use NDI over something like Dante or AES. Don't get me wrong, NDI is amazing in the right use case and with the right infrastructure but also can introduce a fair bit of latency if not installed correctly. Obviously audio streams take less bandwidth than video streams so the latency with using this in a network with wired devices is probably not that noticeable. However if you start introducing wireless devices and/or devices in other locations as mentioned in the video, your latency will drastically increase. Also NDI doesn't really support any clocking, not a huge deal in this use case as a streamer but could become problematic in other use cases.

      they prob don’t want to pay to license NDI or Dante. Could still do AVB, I believe that one is royalty-free. It’s a niche feature that’s only relevant for a smaller amount of folks, and skews higher-end. These are prosumer devices for the most part. Pro production teams are going to use something like an Aaton, Zaxcom, Sound Devices, or Nagra recorder, and for installed or even touring sound, Dante is the standard.
      Another important thing to note: NDI is a software implementation while Dante has a dedicated chip. It’s also going to be less latency and potentially more stable, or at least more consistent, as it’s basically a small computer just dedicated to the task of converting to and from Dante. Dante also wants to be the only thing on a network, whereas NDI / AES67 can coexist. Venues with millions invested in Dante infra aren’t switching to NDI any time soon for audio, but it’s a nice option to have for stuff like they show in this video and I hope it gets more popular, esp given Dante’s recent issues with supply chain shortages and long time to market for stuff like this.

During my audio engineering course, when we were doing our live sound component, we had a pair of Avid stage boxes connected to an Avid Venue system over Ethernet. It’s good to see it integrated into a consumer level product, don’t get me wrong, but eh. Feels kinda gimmicky to me, it’s not a feature I can see a lot of streamers needing personally

    NDI is great! I've been using it to share cameras, scenes, audio, etc between PC's for a few years now. Replaced the capture card awhile back with NDI and never looked back. Now experimenting with a triple PC streaming/recording setup to offload functions. Video feeds powered by NDI.
    I've also recently been using Dante audio with their virtual sound card software, as well as an add-in card on the Behringer X32 rack mixer. Semi-expensive setup, but the audio routing capabilities over the network are amazing. Just doesn't coexist nicely with NDI - so have to separate them out.

    My thought is I could use this to not only stream what I am doing in music production but when doing reviews so instead of using a digital coaxial cable to another interface but do not have the control this has and this NDI might mean I can streamline this process, have more control and also move a setup around the house.
    Not idea if this is possible to get audio from another interface as this was not answered and maybe this the failing and silence usually follows such questions as my last one did.

    Dude! That is cool. Big question? You talked about sending audio through the wan from one location to another. Can one person on OBS output to NDI and then send it to someone else through through the WAN so it can be used as a vid/audio source? That wayn having if you did a podcast with someone else they can use OBS on thei r subide. You use OBS on yourside and capture or live stream it to youtube. IS that possible? That way we would connect two OBSs remotely where the connecting is being done externally through NDS. IS that possible or am I draming?

    Yo. Every now and then I find a sick new product here, or I learn something about a product I already have. But most of the time I just want to see this dude be stoked about a/v stuff.
    Like I don’t care about this thing, it’s neat, I’ll never buy it, I have no use for one, I can’t afford it.
    *BUT I watched the whole video* 😊

      I was using the Elgato Wave Link app. On the Stream Deck there is a native plugin that lets you toggle between two audio outputs. It's one of my favorites.
