Hey Melon, Thanks for giving my son a ride to school. I was skeptical because you asked me on the street and I never met you before, but it worked out.

Exactly. When I first listened to Mr asylum I was blown away thinking this is gonna be a breath of fresh air in the rock genre. Then their 2nd album came out and I thought this is good. Then mcid came out and I was like what the f*ck? Enough said.
It's a shame, I've always thought of them as the superior band to those like Royal Blood and Wolfmother, because their songs have always been hard hitting but interesting to listen to. Which is why this album was disappointing but I still liked a few songs like Upperdrugs. I don't like how bands tend to go this route; we do not need another Imagine Dragons. Anyway, for those of you who don't know this band and are only finding out through this review, dont judge them solely on this album - try listening to their two other albums, they're nothing like this one.
I agree. I'm a huge HS fan, and I've defended the direction of this album enough. I can't really get into the album as much as I did the previous two albums. I mean Johnny is a helluva guitarist, but damn. Johnny should've gone the Chino of the Deftones route and had his side projects, but keep the sound of HS. I have been obsessed with their previous 2 albums, but there isn't much to like about this one outside of Upperdrugs.
As a diehard highly suspect fan who has been their each album release and going " I can't believe I'm living through this I love it " to hearing this new record and just feeling empty. I just don't know how you go from such an amazing album to a stinker. It has a good song or two but nothing I'll hold on to.
I can agree with thoughts of this being bad. I was let down with the albums release, but I was surprised when you said their earlier work never stood out. Mister Asylum and Boy Who Died Wolf are awesome
I love highly suspect, and I like some of the stuff on this album. But, the rest is mostly trash. It seems like Johnny is going through something, especially when you look at his Twitter.
you know what else is highly suspect Melon!? The fact that this morning I found a dollar bill on the floor so I put it in my ridge wallet.. the thing is I don't own a ridge wallet Anthony. Care to explain yourself?
fuck that. He's just telling his truth. These fucking "artists" think they can shit into a mic and people will pay for it. They get so damn upset while they count their money. What are they upset about? That they took a shit into a mic and someone had the gall to say something about it. Regular people working regular jobs, if they decide one day that they don't want to put any effort into the job, but still expect to get paid for it, they will find themselves out of a job quickly. These fucking pricks want everyone else to suck their dicks. More power to the melon.
TheEpicRu that made me hard cringe also. But not as hard as when I heard tddybear. I know the reason behind the song and blah, blah, blah. It’s a sweet sentiment, but the execution is complete cringe. Those lyrics though....🤦🏾♀️
Agreed. The way they are put in feels like their parts were at least cut in half in terms of length, and even then, I'm not sure it would work, and Joe didn't exactly bring his A game vocally (though I feel like the riff could have been good on a Gojira album). I'm in total denial that they were a part of this right now. :(
Was so disappointed with this album, I like some tracks cause to me some of them come off as genuine but the rest sound like demos for johnnys solo project, lazy interludes or have cringey lyrics like teddy bear or these days
I see where you are coming from, but i honestly don't understand the hate. They didn't stick in the one genre you enjoy so its bad. Not saying thats what you think but that seems to be the general theme for the hate. And the lyrics aren't bad, i wouldn't say uninspired either. If if look into any song it copys somthing else. In this age nothing is 100% original. Its impossible at this point
Ms_Yuki_NPC_82729_Non_Essential yes with lyrics it is hard to be original but on this album it’s not the originality it’s that a lot of them are incredibly cringey like on teddybear and these days especially they feel like joke songs when I know Johnny is being deadly serious about all this
Actually their first two albums did make people stop and go wow you fraud. Lydia, My Name is Human, Seratonia, Little One etc... are all great songs and some of the best rock tracks in years. That said , I was incredibly disappointed with this album and the direction they're going in, theres a couple good songs but mostly uninspired or unoriginal garbage. The singer wants to be a hip hop star now and its a huge mistake when they had built a huge fan base because they were playing great rock songs and hes mad at fans that aren't happy about the new sound even though its so bad and far from what people love about them. I guess its up to Badflower to save rock now they are incredible and hopefuly their next album doesn't suck like this one
I feel the exact same way, super disappointed with this album. I haven't heard of Badflower tho so there may still be hope left in this world 🙏🙏 I'll check em out
I mean there’s a lot of good rock bands that are (imo) way better than badflower, I used to enjoy badflower but I dislike the whole undertone of the band
highly suspect truly is a good band, Mister Asylum is a really solid alt rock album; as a long time fan I was so crushed by how this album turned out. It's a huge stain on their career, but if anyone here hasn't heard of them before go listen to their first record and give it a chance! Here's hoping that they can turn this around
Man I must be the only HS fan that liked this album. I was going through so much shit in my life when this album dropped that it hit me in a different way. Then I saw HS live shortly after and him performing a lot of this album and talking about it made me love it even more. This album got my through some of the darkest moments of my life.
I loved this band so much and when I saw they were making more music I was extremely excited. But what I got was so bad. Except upperdrugs. But the rest was a God Damn disappointment. I just want back the days of mister asylum.
I've been fan since 2015 and I am so disappointed of MCID. Johnny said that it will be their best work and unfortunately he just went all in into the mainstream with shitty album, his ego is too big.
I actually really enjoy Fly. I believe the instrumentals work in the song's favor and feel like the embodiment of the coldness and laziness that comes with the depression he's detailing lyrically throughout the song. I believe it's supposed to give you a negative reaction upon listening to it. And the lyrics I just see as a stream of consciousness. Like he doesn't want to sugar coat it or dress it up. Just confessionally rambles about how he's feeling. I've just always really felt this song.
I really wish you reviewed mister asylum and their first album before this one. In a Discord server I'm in where we send in albums to be rated by the group (on a 0 - 10 scale with 0.5 increments), someone sent in this album. As of now, across 8 ratings, it has a mean rating of 1.44 and a median rating of 0.75. Other things to note - I believe this is the first time an album deemed NOT GOOD by melon has ever been picked. Also, every so often we have a theme that the entire round of albums has to fit in some way. This time it was 'albums you find evocative of a season', and to the person that sent it in he associates it with summer. I dread to think what his summers must be like, lol.
I'll give you a take on Highly Suspect and this album from a guy who fucking loves their first two albums and has paid money to watch them for a night more than once: When I saw this video in my suggested vids and saw the title I thought "well, in YOUR opinion" like a little kid does when someone tells them they're wrong because I'm a fan of Highly Suspect, and I've seen them in person. I was introduced to them by my friend and he showed me Bloodfeather live on Conan and I thought 'hmm, I'm liking this, it's grungy, raw, and the general tone of the whole song appeals to me'. I listened to both TBWDW and Mister Asylum, both albums are filled with songs I'll listen to for a long, long time. I saw them live the first time and they played so fucking well, so much energy, etc. Then I see them for the second time around a year after and it felt like they'd just lost half of the enthusiasm and effort that they used to have. At some point around maybe 1 year ago I was watching Johnny on Instagram doing a live feed where him and his friend (now new member of the band, it seems) Matt were doing coke on the tour bus, both just off their heads on coke and who knows what else and I was thinking 'what the fuck is gonna happen to this band?'. Anyway, then Johnny (probably around 7 months ago) starts posting about being in the studio and I'm thinking okay here we go. He starts posting more and more about them being in the studio recording a new Highly Suspect album, then one day he says the album is finished completely and apparently this album is gonna be completely different to what people expect from them. At this point I'm thinking yeah a few rap songs, maybe a new guitar tone and new songwriting direction (less about drugs, etc.). Then he posts about it being the only album he's made that he can actually sit there and listen to it and enjoy it, which made me think 'damn, this is gonna be a banger of a record'. Then a few months back, 16 and Upperdrugs drop on the same day. I wasn't impressed at all with 16 and if anything I detested it, but don't completely detest now (still not good enough tho), however I actually quite like Upperdrugs; if it was on The Boy Who Died Wolf it would fit right in there I think. So, that wasn't the best start. Then Tokyo Ghoul comes out and for a few days I was quite into it and I found it fascinating for some reason - to hear Johnny rap with a rap beat behind him, and Yung Thug's verse too. Canals came out a little after that and literally all I can think when I hear it is that it sounds like a cleopatrick rip-off (if you know who they are you'll know exactly what I'm saying). Then... the album comes out. I press play, and Fly comes on. I skip it around 2 mins in because I'm not liking what I'm hearing, then I get to Freakstreet and I'm starting to think "ummmm. what. the. fuck. is. this?????". For the rest of the album I couldn't listen to anything more than a minute of any song apart from Arizona, because Rich has a nice voice and the acoustic sounds lovely. *In my opinion,* Johnny's ego is getting bigger than the band incrementally. Their live performances are getting worse and worse, their songwriting is getting worse and worse and more about Johnny & his apparently troubled life. Mister Asylum is a great album. It's got enthusiasm and that spark you need from a band with a lot of potential, same with TBWDW, for me. I mean, even the album covers are like 'damn wtf is that, that's cool' then you see the MCID cover and think 'okay'. I feel that they are trying to make this album for the true fans of them, the real MCID crew members - but all they've really done is bring out a very below-par album (not intentionally) to see who doesn't just turn off something different. They've lost all their artistic ambition and rawness. It's less about making good music and more about expressing Johnny's feelings. Fuck THAT. I've gotta say, I really *really* think they're gonna break up as a band very soon because Johnny can't talk all that shit about not liking their past music and ONLY liking this new album, then receive a lot of criticism for this album to then go back to their old sound - that is just, unfortunately, not gonna happen. - also, Johnny has said that he will release solo rap stuff under the name "Terrible Johnny" (which has been his IG handle since I've known about the band),which backs up the idea that Highly Suspect may just fizzle out at some point in future.
It was a sign when Johnny started adding face tats and dressing like a Soundcloud Rapper. MCID is a pile of shit and as someone who LOVES their first 2 albums it's like a slap in the face.
As a gigantic Highly Suspect fan - they are my number one band in the world, ever - I feel like this harsh critique is more than just. It's interesting to hear the perspective of someone who is much less biased than I am. Thank you for this. I still enjoy the album, I can't really help it, but I recognise its gigantic flaws.
When Mister Asylum and BWDW came out they were respectively my absolute favorite albums at each moment, and when I saw them live they put on an amazing sound. And then they put this out.... They went from making some of the coolest rock music I knew with some really interesting and sometimes abstract lyrics to this.... mess
I've enjoyed a decent amount of Highly Suspect's stuff in the past and this album made me want to retch. Also, you skipped over the song @tddybear with Nothing But Thieves. That one is somewhat tolerable imo. Lyrically trash, though.
The fact that you just said their music doesn't make you say wow makes me remember how irrelevant one RUclipsrs opinion is in the grand scheme of things. I've never been moved to the core with songs like Serotonia, Little One, Bath Salts, My Name Is Human, Mr.Asylum. Pure passion.

Big fan of their first 2 albums, but I just saw them live and they're kind of white boy douche bros. They're like if the Beatie Boys weren't in on the joke while simultaneously wanting to be John Mayer without the skill. Moments that defines it was the 3rd song was like a 10 minute slow jam sung by the bassist and Johnny trying his best to imitate BB King's guitar playing by someone who's never actually learned to play a BB King solo. How he stopped right before one of their best buildups in a song to make a speach, ruining the impact. Or how right before "16" he announces that it's the number 1 song in the country; while it literally is not the top of any charts in the US. I'm really dissapointed bc they have a few absolutely fantastic songs (Lydia, Seratonia, My Name is Human) that made me think there was something deeper there but after this album and the show I'm beginning to think those were flukes.
Johnny's ego has been inflating for years and I've watched him cut down long time fans for criticism, myself included. He's a joke. It's all so damn sad because the johnny I met years ago was super nice. It's funny how a little game changes a person. And he's not even that fucking famous tbh

This album is not like their other too but unpopular opinion it’s better than their first album but it’s very different
Your mustache makes me wanna order some Pizza Hut
shame. I love highly suspect. their first album was awesome.
Dr. Pj McFrench The 2011 album was the best
If I wanted to listen to rock crossed over with rap, I'd listen to my old Linkin Park albums
“Music Production Is My Passion” might be one of my favorite things you’ve ever said.
I didnt listen to the album but I watch every “not good” because I like hearing melon rip into some albums lol
Same. My favorite NOT GOOD videos are Nav's albums, because they're hilariously bad
Same. It feels good to have such a disconnect from the artists and their fans that not only is the review in itself funny, but the potential REEEEing from them and other sycophants in the comments trying to justify their poor music taste is what ties it together.
It physically hurts to hear the this horrid truth.... MCID :(
And they drag conor mason to it
Hey Melon, Thanks for giving my son a ride to school. I was skeptical because you asked me on the street and I never met you before, but it worked out.
I like Gojira and Nothing But Thieves but they shouldn't have been in this album

2019: the year of the NOT GOOD
A shot for every 8 and every NOT GOOD
His last not good was more than a month ago what are you talking about?
2019... it's NOT GOOD
Huh??? There was nothing but 8's the last month or so and there has barely been any NOT GOODs compared to 2018 are you fucking high?
@@Juli_is_Online Actually, it's the exact same amount NOT GOOD's for 2018 and 2019 (8 to be exact), and the year is not up yet. Don't know why I'm correcting you, brainlets aren't capable of humility.
Sadly I would have to agree. Highly Suspect is one of my favorite bands. The first 2 records were amazing. This album totally dropped the ball.
Exactly. When I first listened to Mr asylum I was blown away thinking this is gonna be a breath of fresh air in the rock genre. Then their 2nd album came out and I thought this is good. Then mcid came out and I was like what the f*ck? Enough said.
*First 3 albums*
That's gonna be a nah from me dog that shit was uber cringe
Not gonna lie, that part is pretty Death Grips.
I love hs, easily top 10 artists but I ain't even mad you have this a not good, this album was not worth the three years wait
I'm pretty sure this is the biggest OOF we've seen this year other than logic.

"Thugger went way harder on this track than he needed to"
That Earl Sweatshirt rating was highly suspect too
I love highly suspect, and I like some of the stuff on this album.

I really liked the first two albums A LOT and completely agree that MCID is NOT GOOD.
I’m surprised Fantano is still alive, after ripping so many artists albums to shreds.
He prob pays for a body guard with RUclips money
That mustache? Yeah, it's NOT GOOD
It looks like it's about to cover Pompeii in ash
Exactly...it’s GREAT
MCID stands for My Crew Is Dope. That's how I knew this album was gonna be trash
TheEpicRu that made me hard cringe also. But not as hard as when I heard tddybear. I know the reason behind the song and blah, blah, blah. It’s a sweet sentiment, but the execution is complete cringe. Those lyrics though....🤦🏾♀️
Gojira is my favorite band so I only listened to the song featuring Joe from Gojira. Wasn't impressed at all
Agreed. The way they are put in feels like their parts were at least cut in half in terms of length, and even then, I'm not sure it would work, and Joe didn't exactly bring his A game vocally (though I feel like the riff could have been good on a Gojira album). I'm in total denial that they were a part of this right now. :(
Their first album will impress you, check out Bath Salts
Anneau Nime yeah not really sure what Joe was trying to do there vocally. sounded like he was screaming while ugly crying

I actually liked the song Canals but outside of that the album does have anything for me
Me too. Good song.
I haven't heard of Badflower tho so there may still be hope left in this world 🙏🙏 I'll check em out
How is My name is Human a great song? The lyrics are some of the stupidest they've written.

So many 8s and NOT GOODs in a year... everything is balanced as it should be.
I almost can’t bring myself to watch this knowing my sister listens to this band religiously
If it makes you feel better, I watched it and I really loved the bands other albums
As someone who would call HS like my second favorite band right now, this album is really bad. The rest of their stuff is fantastic though
The first 2 albums (especially 1) are good even though I didn't like the pop songs on 2
Man I must be the only HS fan that liked this album. I was going through so much shit in my life when this album dropped that it hit me in a different way. Then I saw HS live shortly after and him performing a lot of this album and talking about it made me love it even more. This album got my through some of the darkest moments of my life.
Melons just highly suspicious of when he'll get 2 million subs.
Becuase he knows when he gets 2 millon subs he has to do MBDTF redux review
MCID was such a disappointment. I was hoping for something more akin to their first album.

they're actually a great band. this album is just trying way too hard
bath salts is a good song too.
Their other records are good all together
Don’t let this distract you from the 2 million subscriber ass reveal
I loved this band so much and when I saw they were making more music I was extremely excited. But what I got was so bad. Except upperdrugs. But the rest was a God Damn disappointment. I just want back the days of mister asylum.
Anthony, I didn’t appreciate you spitting on the face of my baby and then backhanding my mother.
This was one of my favorite bands and I’m so sad this is the first time that he reviewed HS but I sadly agree with everything he said
Johnny Cash at the back reacting to the NOT GOOD review
I actually love the band's other material, but one has to admit when their favorite artists put out shit. Unless it's Al Corley.
Hello, my name is melon (hey). And I'm grown out of the grooooound.
I really wish you reviewed mister asylum and their first album before this one.
To me it seems like johnny is going through alot and letting his his label influence his gritty blues rock roots into rap/pop/rock fusion and they dont have enough experience in that genre to put out a whole album like that. I honestly did like fly. Think about it rap is very literal and his vocals on this album are trying to emulate that and sorta fail. Their first to albums lyrics and music was much better.
I dread to think what his summers must be like, lol.
hey melon
Johnny Cash looks like he’s Anthony’s entourage trying to intimidate me into accepting his points.
I get the feeling the lead singer in this band is a MAJOR edge lord. Dude looks like he idolizes Ryan Gosling from Place Beyond the Pines.
Bro when I first discovered Highly Suspect that's the first thing that came to my fucking mind HAHAH
I'll give you a take on Highly Suspect and this album from a guy who fucking loves their first two albums and has paid money to watch them for a night more than once:
When I saw this video in my suggested vids and saw the title I thought "well, in YOUR opinion" like a little kid does when someone tells them they're wrong because I'm a fan of Highly Suspect, and I've seen them in person.
I think 2019 has most NOT GOOD, 8 and 9 albums out of all.
in conclusion, 2019 is a land of contrasts
As a gigantic Highly Suspect fan - they are my number one band in the world, ever - I feel like this harsh critique is more than just. It's interesting to hear the perspective of someone who is much less biased than I am. Thank you for this. I still enjoy the album, I can't really help it, but I recognise its gigantic flaws.
Oh no, a bad record that is a cry for help and a "not good"? We all know how this ends....

Me too! ❤ MCID ❤

I just want Melon to comment on Nothing But Thieves one day. Maybe when MP drops

The only thing Highly Suspect here is the album quality haha funny joke
I think the real meaning of the album title is that Johnny actually believes that his crew is made of actual dope.
