Man United were in the second Division the year Carlisle were top flight. They are the only club to have played in the top flight but never played Man U in the league. They did meet United in the cup in 78 which went to a replay. One of only two competive fixtures United have played in Cumbria.
The Busby babes famously played at Workington on the cup in front of 21000, January 1958, only a couple of months before the tragedy in Munich.

The statue is indeed that of Hughie Mcllmoyle a CUFC icon. He can still be found at home games outside the main stand chatting to fans pre-match, having queued up with everyone else to buy his ticket, as he refuses to take freebies. Always makes me chuckle, walk past your statue and queue up to buy a ticket. An absolute gentleman.

btw, it is McIlmoyle in the statue. He played for us on 3 separate occasions.
Another interesting fact about the team is that, in our only time in the top flight, we had the same Goalkeeper as we had when we were in the bottom tier. I think he was the first player to do that. Allan Ross was the name if you're interested :-)

    The history behind our Crest
The red patonce cross on gold was the arms of Sir William de Carlyell of Cumberland. The red roses show the city's Lancastrian sympathies, while the gold rose is the badge of King Edward I.Above the arms is a distinctive mural crown. This recalls the castle in the second unofficial coat of arms. The gateway reflects the fact that the city lies near the English Scottish border. In the unofficial arms the two shields were supported by a red dragon. This is perpetuated by the two wyverns that support the arms. They recall the ancient British Kingdom of Cumbria, and a red dragon supports the arms of Cumbria County Council for the same reason. The wyverns are differenced by having their wings charged with gold roses.
I believe The red cross was originally that of
    Archbishop Thomas Wolsey
how was given lands including Carlisle buy
Henry VIII Archbishop Thomas Wolsey is famous for giving us the tax system still used in the U.K till this very day.
The Foxes Restaurant is a corporate hospitality lounge.
    Our great achievement is beeting
    A.S Roma 3 - 2 in The
    Stadio Olimpico on June first
    1972 in The short lived
    Anglo - Italian Cup.
Stan Bowles is our most skilful player ever but
Hughie McIlmoyle is our top goalscorer in our clubs history.
As a Scottish Carlisle United fan I would liken us to Saint Johnstone so I think we could have some success playing in the Scottish League system we would likely have the same kind of level of performance as Saint Johnstone being regulars in The Scottish Premier League like Saint Jo3but without actually winning much in the eay of silverware & sometimes getting in to Europe from time to time but being unable to actually win the league.
I dont believe there is any appetite for us to play in The Scottish League system as the majority of fans of my club a fiercely pround of being English.

Could Carlisle play in the SPFL? Yes they could given their location but they would lose financially not being in the English system and even a big club like Carlisle might bawk and the prospect of winter trip to Elgin or Inverness. Fro memory I think Gateshead once thought about joining the SPFL, I might have been around the time Gretna won the nomination to join.
While in Carlisle did you visit Northern League side Carlisle City?

Bill Shankly used to read his team selections to the crowd on the tannoy system and explain his team selection to them, we also won leauge 2 in our first season back after the conference, we also beat a full strength AS Roma side in Rome 3-2 in the early 70’s in tne Anglo Italian cup......

I have great memories of my Dad taking me up to Brunton Park in the late 90s. The atmosphere was always incredible, warm, welcoming and family friendly. I am also privileged enough to have witnessed the ground full on a few occasions for special cup ties against Sheffield Wednesday (top of PL at time), Spurs and Arsenal. Thanks for the video!
