  • Carlisle United is the closest English football club from the Paisley/Glasgow area, and is just a one hour journey south by Avanti West Coast. Carlisle United had been on my football bucket list for years, but would it be worth the wait? Carlisle United vs. Bristol Rovers was not destined to be a goal fest. #carlisleunited

Excellent vid! I went to Carlisle a few weeks ago to tick Brunton Park off the list. They were playing Leyton Orient and, just like against Bristol Rovers, they lost 0-1. But despite a poor game I loved my visit. The ground is a wonderful old style stadium (I hope the Amercans won't ruin it) and the fans are passionate and knowledgeable. The city of Carlisle is a great place too, one of England's unsung gems!

Nice video as always. I’ve been to loads of Carlisle games in recent years, either driving or preferably a quick hour on the Avanti from Motherwell. They probably do have a similar or even higher average home support than both St Mirren or Motherwell as the crowds are not usually boosted by large away supports. Scottish notes are never a problem at Carlisle as many Scottish fans regularly attend matches or even just travel down for the day. Ps, thanks for the Motherwell reference, I understand theres a slight rivalry there which perhaps dates back to certain cup game in 1977 which I also attended. Also, away fans do occupy part of the Pioneer stand. Good luck with all your future travels. 👍

Made a long weekend of it, getting there via Newcastle on the Friday, going to the game on Saturday (goalless draw), visiting Penrith, Brougham Castle and Mayburgh Henge on the Sunday and returning home, via Manchester, on Monday. I don’t think it’s an unhealthy obsession; back in 2013 as a USA fan I had the absolute pleasure of going to Hamden Park, and for a nightcap my buddy and I were talking to two people from the tartan army. Both members were Aberdeen fans and told us that in 1981 there was a major issue with the old firm where horses were galloping at full speed to separate the hooligans. That was the moment the S FA banned alcohol from the stands.

It doesn't matter much who they are playing but I'd love to get a feel of the atmosphere. If the visitors came second, that's an added bonus.
Quite some years ago they top dressed the pitch with sand for more evenness. The grass didn't grow back as quick as they would have liked,
and it was a very sandy pitch at the start of the season. Visitors dubbed the home fans as the Arabs. All in good humour and was accepted!

I have handwritten notes of my travels over the years, and for my 1986 trip from the USA (NY City area) and using a rental car in England, Wales & Scotland, I have confirmed that I have been in the Castle in town. I also noted the accent of locals close to Scottish. It is near the border where the Romans didn't dare go any farther due to fierceness of the Scots (even today !).

We feel your pain here in NI re banknotes. This has been a bone of contention for many years as our notes have never been accepted in most of England (yes, just England). A few years ago my wife was actually CHARGED a commission in London to change our Sterling notes to English Sterling notes. I rang the BoE and was told our notes ‘aren’t legal tender anywhere in the UK as they aren’t printed at the Royal Mint’ and that businesses ‘can accept cabbages or chair legs in payment but can refuse your notes’. I kid you nor, those were the exact words used…..

Many places in England refuse to accept Scottish currency, even in the north. There's a big problem with Scottish counterfeit bank notes, and shops and pubs aren't sufficiently familiar with them to tell apart, so refuse them completely. I've been on the wrong end of a few, and they vary from laughable to very convincing. Carlisle is close enough to the border to spot a wrong'un.

    Carlisle Ground over 18,000.
Pride Park Derby over 35,000. Biggest in the League.

Scott, I really wish I had known you were down for this. Don't worry about the Scottish money, it's well accepted down here, after all Scotland is only a few miles from the border and is a main shopping hub for the folks just over the border. Indeed Carlisle does not appear in the Doomsday Book as when it was written Carlisle was ruled by the Scots and has been ruled longer by them than the English.
United have just been bought by and American and changes are already in the pipeline
If your down again give me a shout I'll show you around.
See you on the Train hopefully sometime soon.

Surely 1-0, 1-1 and 0-1 along with 0-0 are the 4 most popular scores in football.

You can buy alcohol in English stadiums, but you can't drink within view of the pitch. You have to drink in the concourse, even in hospitality. They'll have blinds that they close just before kick off, so you can't drink/watch the game at the same time

You picked one of the poorer games of the season, a draw would have been a fair result but we had no luck with the own goal. Next time get a seat on the other side of the ground, generally a better atmosphere and view and you can also go back to the fans zone at half time
