I'm personaly team trunks! They are esential as a part of what inpired Superman as a whole (Strongmen of it's time) not to mention it nicely breaks up the blue. But it doesn't mean I don't like trunkless suits, Like S&L and Rebirth suits are marvelous looking, but it has to be done the right way for both opions. Like say if you do Trunks on Supes they have to be complementary size and shape so it blends with the rest nicely and not look like they're too small, and if you do trunkless suit make sure to make the belt look good so it breaks up the blue space and for it not to look like he's "naked" without trunks or belt haha
@@kamil.p5134 I love it. I kind of agree that he feels naked without them as well.
Henry Cavill has a great suit. I just wish the blue color wasn't so dark and shaded. That's why his suit doesn't reach #1 for me.
it was a bit over designed in the belt and the cuffs but it was fantastic for the most part.
@@billymoore7182 I didn’t mind the blue in the joss whedon justice league
Yes, Cavill's blue color was much better in that take. I just wish it was used in Snyder's movies. You don't have to make the suit almost black to make Superman dark. Zack Snyder's Justice League was much better story wise. Look wise, outside of the black suit, Josh Wedon gave Cavill's suit the better blue.
@@billymoore7182 all Whedon did was increase the color saturation during post production
Whoa, got the first shout out there. Thank you sir, I appreciate that. So far the best non-trunks costumes I’ve seen have basically been the DC Rebirth Superman costume and Smallville Season 11 comics (depending on the artist. The art fluctuates wildly throughout that titles run.)
@@mattlinkous4356 and I appreciate you dude! Thanks for the support!
It's absolutely refreshing to have a content creator who communicates back with his or her subscribers. One thing we can all agree on is we are fans of the Superman character and Lore.
If some of those trim lines around MoS floating Buckle has red in it would have been a nice touch
@@comixof2morrow you should check out my indisguise suit review. I sold the suit, but it was a good concept.
@@comixof2morrow totally agree and that’s why I love these discussions
David Corensweat I will rank when I see footage of his suit in action. Looks great already but I wanna see what it looks like pre post production
Same
Honestly, I think it depends on the setting. If it's a darker film, no trunks, if it's light hearted and more towards classic, trunks are a necessity.
Ah yes good call. Definitely agree with this
If trunks are "outdated", then why is the S symbol being contained in a shield-shaped crest not? He's not medieval nobility, after all. He takes aesthetic cues from historical things that connote strength. It doesn't have to be practical.
If you're going with the the "outdated" argument, don't just nibble the bullet - bite it!
@@Scroteydada such a good point. It’s like you can’t have one without the other.
For me the briefs are a lot complicated than just “yes or no”, because I think it’s entirely design dependent.
The point of them is to invoke strength (like circus strongmen) as well as balance the amount of red on the suit.
The Man Of Steel suit is a really cool modernization because it changes the trunks into more of an “HR Giger” inspired weight lifting belt which I think gives the same feeling of strength. That and the chrome muscle suit making him a literal “man of steel”, he feels like a beacon of strength. It’s a great design that makes the trunks not feel necessary. That and the alien costume emphasizes the otherness of the character.
That being said, Christopher reeve’s costume is equally as perfect. The color balance is perfect, he feels like a beacon of strength as well as a gentle soul. He has that otherness to him just through wearing bright colors and spandex, while the rest of the movie is very colorless. He stands out in a great way that tells you exactly who this guy is.
That all being said, I don’t like a lot of designs with the trunks, and I don’t like a lot without them. I’m not a fan of the Superman returns suit or the Superman and Lois suits. They don’t have any of what i just listed and feel more like the suit is an afterthought to me I guess.
I definitely agree. All has to do with the suit. I love this breakdown and thank you so much for adding your thoughts.
Thanks for the shout out 🫡. Loving this channel.
@@kitkatsneakattack7933 of course! Thanks so much appreciate you!
I'm definitely team trunks! The red trunks are a big part of what makes Superman instantly recognizable and iconic. With just the blue bodysuit he looks so much more generic and could be mistaken for other superheroes with similar looks. When you see the red trunks over the blue tights, there's no doubt that you're looking at Superman!
I like it. It’s all about that iconic look.
My Superman suits ranking
1. Christopher Reeve
2. Tyler Hoechlin
3. Brandon Routh (Kingdom Come)
4. Henry Cavill
5. Dean Cain
Perfect
Eh, Dean Cain’s was way too shiny and his S chest piece was ridiculously large. They did adjust over the seasons though. It’s not too bad of a suit, but I’d rank 90s Superboy suit above this one.
@@El3ctr0Lun4 One of things I do like about Dean’s suit is that they used a royal blue. Which is darker than the Reeve suit obviously but it catches light in a way that still makes it feel bright.
@@mattlinkous4356 It’s a good colour!
The problem with Gunn's Superman suit is it's baggy and the trunks look like they were made by Hughies. He's throwing together different aspects from different versions but in a sloppy way. The Superman shield is from Son of Cal El (not Kingdom Come) but the trunks are from Kingdom Come but looks like a baggy cloth diaper. It could have been much better but it looks like the film could bw a Crackle Original just going off the costume design choices for these characters
I agree. It needs to be more formfitting.
Yes! That’s how superman has always been and that’s that! Henry’s Superman suit looked stupid with all the lines and no trunks and how depressingly dark it was
@@jayluke8469 ouch haha
The trunks can make sense with the alien origin. Just look at All Star Superman, it was a part of Kriptonian culture to wear trunks on the outside.
@@RebelWithoutABoss so true. That’s a very good point.
HELL TO THE YES
Love the enthusiasm
@@Superfitcosplay they just need to go back to a pure color palette. Fire truck reds, royal blues.
Ayeee I got a shout out!! Also I changed my name so it’s easier to read lololol
@@ShaneH7828 haha excellent. Glad you stopped by
Trunks are fine but they are too oversized.
@@purefoldnz3070 definitely in this one
@@Superfitcosplay give me one scene with Superman putting on his clark kent disguise, there's no way a pair of suit pants would fit over the top unless they were clown pants.
I agree. The size and baggy look of the trunks is what I hate.
I've lived through George Reeves, Christopher Reeve, John Haymes Newton, Gerard Christopher, Dean Cain, Tom Welling all to the present day in order.
And my fave suits are Routh's and Cavill's. Routh's was imo the best modern take on classic Superman suit, but with adjusments in colors, wide open collars and different fabric for the cape, it will definitely be the best. Cavill's MoS suit was the best i can think of as pure modern take on Superman suit, i love the red of it, the washed dark greyish blue, the tight fitting muscle defined suit, the details on the waist and buckle, and i'm satisfied with how it was in MoS, nothing i would change, in fact, kinda pissed when they changed it for BvS and JL.
Funny how i was always in the minority tho, heck i even loved the hell of Thomas Jane Punisher and Keanu's Constantine when they came out, sucks being a person with a taste like mine.
Routh's was an abomination. The leather cape yuk. The tiny little boots yuk. The S on the belt yuk. The texture of the suit with hundreds of little S's reeks of overdesign, the S's on the heel of the boots just no. The 3D S was also a mistake and its size was too small.
@@Preludedraw I absolutely love this. What a timeframe to live through and see. Seeing the evolution must’ve been amazing. I do have a special place in my heart for the Superman returns suit. I think it’s got some amazing aspects to it
@@purefoldnz3070 Unless we look at 'the making of' those S brandings are not noticeable, only the buckle one that are obvious. Oh yes, the small chest emblem needs adjustment too.
@@Superfitcosplay Thank you Boss, you are seriously an awesome person. Love the way you reply to comments.
@@Preludedraw its just obnoxious over design and as an artist and designer myself it makes me sick just to look at it. There was a trend at the time of doing this, Star Trek also did this with the fabric of the shirts make up of tiny starfleet emblems.
Oh man! Thank you for mentioning me! I humbly appreciate it.
Also, im proud of you for pronouncing my username on my channel. You said it right. All those people who call the trunks "underwear" are weird that they use belts to hold up their underwear.
Luckily I call the new Superman diapers then 💀

I think no briefs but with a break in the blue with red trim would be ideal. To me it looks the best that way. I mean, let's be honest, who wears undies over there pants? Unless you are one of those whom walks around cross eyed yelling "Frank n beans". Anyways, thanks for the video and discussion/debate. Gunn's Superman suit is the worst suit ever.

My favorite Superman suit is from Christopher Reeve's. It's straight from the comics. Tyler Hoechlin's season 3 suit is a close second.
yeah, its like you dont have to reinvent the wheel just keep it simple!
@@billymoore7182 I agree
Tyler Hoechlin's suit is a dark blue, yes. But it's not almost black like Cavill's was. I really like the red belt over the blue. Tyler's symbol is the most traditional you can get. Bizarreo was done really well in the show as well.
Even though I like Corensweat's suit, I'm not gonna rank until I see it in action in a teaser or trailer.

@@samuelmichiels8807 I’ve always liked this video
Superman would win 🏆
That comment about how Superman should inspired.. be "The Man of Tomorrow" and not make us hold on to the past is perfect!! I really wish DC would realize that. Sadly Bendis undid the progress made throughout New 52 and Rebirth. Now Gunn seems to be undoing the progress we made in live action as well.
Sadly, Superman Returns did exactly what "fans" wanted. A continuation of Reeve's Superman. Yet that failed. "Fans" don't know what they really want.
Are you referring to my comment? If so, thank you. I appreciate it. I really passionately love it when heros inspire. Granted, doing the right thing can be difficult, being the good guy is often hard to do because enemies are always trying to keep you Down. But superman is basically a ray of hope.
As for fans not knowing what they want, its less about the vision, but more of how its put into perspective.
It’s so true. Fans want one thing but when they get it, they want the other. It’s such a wild thing to watch.
I agree with this. The fans get the thing that they want, but unfortunately, it doesn’t translate well. Which I guess ultimately is why the fans don’t write movies haha. But I can definitely see both points
@@Superfitcosplay well I'd think it has more to do with how well fans understand source material.
I mean, you have shows like the defenders saga for marvel, and daredevil had some of the absolute best writing and creative choices done with it and it's one of my favorite shows. But what if a fan wanted to make a fan film on daredevil. They can take inspiration from various comics and as long as it works the film has potential to be good.
A bad example of this is Spider-Man lotus. I didn't even try to finish it and it was bad.
@@giyuutomioka6974 that’s so true. And you’re right… Sometimes fan films are actually better than what we get in the cinemas.
My main dislike with the trunks now is that it feels like the Superman character is trapped by them and by nostalgia.
I see “fans” saying that if he isn’t in trunks and if the S isn’t on the cape then he isn’t Superman.
I also see people that just won’t let the character move on from Christopher Reeve. Yes he was good, he was also a product of the time. I see people saying that Will Reeve should be “given” the role instead of David. Will isn’t an even an actor.
Superman is the man of tomorrow not yesterday.
Something to prove my point about people not letting him move on from trunks. We now have Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in the yellow suit and he looks great. Where are the fans saying that he needs the blue trunks? Wolverine wore the trunks. He has not been trapped by them.
People need to let Superman move on from the trunks.
That’s actually a very valid point. It is kind of gatekeeping it away when you think about it. I guess we do need to be all right with progress and evolution.
@@Superfitcosplay I agree with a lot of people’s thoughts about the MoS/BvS suits. I do wish they were a lighter shade of blue. In all fairness to the suits, Zack also used very cold filters when filming. That scene in MoS with Superman in cuffs talking to Lois, his suit looks almost black with the S showing hardly any colour, I don’t know why he made it so dark.
That is a great word though “gatekeeping”, I think fans do need to let go of Christopher Reeve and the trunks. We all have the movie boxset and can watch his movies whenever we want. I personally want Superman to stay relevant and exciting to people.
@@EmeraldCollection I think you’re right. The character does need to stay relevant and it’s OK to move on from the past.
@@Superfitcosplay One suit which I think would be tremendous for modern Superman is that custom suit Napier has done with the red belt. I think it honours the past with the brighter colours but still looks very modern. The muscle tone is fantastic, it isn’t over the top but still looks good. I said that it’s a shame Tyler’s Superman suit didn’t look as good as that. I am thinking of asking them to make me one of those suits.
If I were to give any feedback, I would be tempted to put some yellow in the belt buckle.
I just tagged you on Insta to show you the suit I mean 😄
@@EmeraldCollection I saw that omg it’s good. Finally enough when I first commissioned him, that’s the suit that I wanted him to make for me. But he made something completely different. Hahahahahah
