    I was working as a Regional Manager for T-Mobile at the time this phone came out. I was the first person in Florida to have this phone. I got it a month before it was officially released. At the time it SMASHED iPhone capabilities and was so easy to sell to people. The trackball was actually taken from the Sidekick lineup of phones.

  • @DonnKnee
    @DonnKnee 8 лет назад +33

    I'm going to go ahead and say Verizon/Motorola had the biggest impact on Androids success. Samsung second and HTC third. Those Droid does commercials by Verizon were incredible. And then Samsung came and knocked it out with the Galaxy line.

    • @DonnKnee
      @DonnKnee 8 лет назад +2

      ***** But Samsung saturated the consumers with devices. Though they were slow, clunky and cheap looking, they definitely helped with the popularity of Android.

    • @Djoser122
      @Djoser122 8 лет назад +1

      And it's that outlook of putting out only high end handsets that has served HTC so poorly. I love HTC phones, but since the Sensation 4G I use Notes because of the stylus and Samsung because their screens. I would have to have no other option before I turn to Verizon for service, so Droids were mostly not an option for me.

      HTC Released the very first Android device though. They were the ones that took the chance of releasing a phone with an under developed OS. Android Cupcake was the first major update because Android Alpha & Beta were in house, and the software that was released was only considered a "Release Candidate", which is why RC29 was the first public version of the platform.. Then HTC was responsible for the sexiest OEM Android skin to date, debuted with the HTC Hero. The first phones used the Sapphire 32A chipset, while the Hero used a 32B. HTC pioneered the whole thing. T-Mobile & HTC should be first on the list

    The port wasn't proprietary - it accepted and worked with mini USB cables and connectors. It was shaped differently because you could also get analog audio out of the port (admittedly a proprietary feature) but it worked completely with mini USB.

    My introduction to Android was Moto Droid 2, and man does that hold a special place in my heart. It was such a good experience, but Android still had a few glitchy bugs back then. It didn't take long for it to eventually suffer from being quickly out of date from lack of updates, adding even more performance issues, but it was still a wonderful experience in its prime. I am a big Apple fan, but I appreciate both OS and like to keep up on what each is doing by switching back and forth.

    This was my first smartphone before moving on to various other Android phones and iPhones. I still love that physical keyboard on it. I held on to it and used it a few years after the fact while all my friends were showing up to school with their sleek new iPhones and larger screen HTC's. I used it till the original battery started falling off the wagon, probably around 2009 or 2010. Still got some kick ass photos I took on it from the school days on an SD card in a box somewhere. Good times.

      Grac Jack i wouldnt say apple is the sole reason. yes they have had a huge influence and arguibly the biggest but android has played its part as well. think about it if apple never had competition then they wouldnt have had to do that much really and same goes for android. competition has also caused smartphones to rapidly advance

    I had it and got rid of it after maybe a month? Why, might you ask? No headphone jack. And it wasn't a proprietary port. It was just a mini usb port. Also, T-Mobile didn't have 3G in my area for a LOOOONG time, so fast data was useless to me, and I just kept it on 2G to save battery. I went back to blackberry.

Got so slow and the battery crapped on me. I remember like "hacking into it" and reset it and used it for a couple more months. THEN I got so excited when they announced the G2! I used to get so many compliments on it. It was so sleek and awesome. I skipped the Galaxy Nexus for some reason but then I got the Nexus 4, then the 5, skipped the 6 because the 5 was in mint condition for all two years and now I'm rocking the 6p!

    I used to go on a chat app on this phone, which I think was called "cupcake". It was basically just me and a bunch of other teens talking about what was trendy at the time, I don't know, Soulja Boy or T-Pain or something. Well, every once in a while, me and some of the more "urban" teens would participate in roast sessions. This was before every kid knew what roast sessions were because even though hip hop was mainstream at the time, mainly ethnic kids listened to it, but I digress. Those roast sessions bring back good memories.

    Google didn't change direction as a result of the iPhone. Developers actually there at the time have come out and said the Atlantic article was incorrect: they were working on Sooner - an existing HTC design, and Dream - a new design at the same time so that Android could work on a lot of different hardware. Both Sooner and Dream run basically the same thing, adapted to different layouts and screen sizes, you know, how Android was always meant for. They had made the decision to not actually ship Sooner long before the iPhone was announced, but because its hardware was finished first, being an existing HTC hardware design, early Android videos featured it.

    I have my old G1 as well! Though I need to get a new battery for it. The nostalgic part of it is neat and would like to just have it up and running again.

    honestly amazing to see how far android has come over the years when you compare modern day androids like the gaalxy s7 edge to the G1. its also amazing how back then android just couldnt compete with iphone and these days android phones can easily compete with an iphone.

    never had a chance to get this beauty since I had no pocket money. now that I have job, I got my first phone, which was Nexus 4, and i fell in love with it.
    now I'm watching this video in Nexus 6P.
    sad that the next event on Oct. 4 won't mention Nexus lines, but I'm looking forward to pixel phone and what it offers.

    The reason I didn't get it and went with a high-end Windows Mobile phone at the time was the 320x480 resolution. The industry had largely moved to 640x480 or even 800x480 by 2008/09, so that sub-VGA resolution was unacceptable to me. Android was also brand new, so that seemed like an additional risk. In retrospect, I wish I'd gotten it. The Galaxy Nexus was my first Android phone and I loved it, it had a 1280x720 screen which was amazing for the time.

    I missed out on the G1 and the HTC Magic after it, but I did manage to buy a brand new HTC Hero though. It blew my mind, I loved it to bits - I've been hooked on Android ever since!

    Seems like every time google has made a significant change in the mobile department, they have chosen HTC to create the device. First the G1, then the Nexus one, and now they contracted HTC to build the Pixl for them.

    You should do a review on the 1st finger freindly full screen touch phone. The HTC Touch. It came out before the iPhone.
