Pocketnow Throwback: HTC Dream / T-Mobile G1

- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- The HTC Dream, also known as the T-Mobile G1, spearheaded Google's push into the smartphone space. It was the first commercially-available Android device, and it changed the entire landscape of mobile communication.
But it didn't always seem destined for success, especially considering its mushy keyboard, smallish screen, and big honking chin. The G1 could have gone either way, and now it's time to examine just what drove it down the path to success. For the first time ever on Pocketnow, we'll be doing that with the assistance of tweets from our audience, sent in after our G1 unboxing this morning.
Tune in to our G1/Dream Throwback Review for a brief look over our collective geek shoulder at the start of Android, then stay tuned for much more from Pocketnow in the other direction: the days, weeks, and months ahead.
Thanks to all who took the time to tweet us!

Something the g1 and the iPhone 7 have in common, no headphone jack.
It was my first thought too. "....and we're back". I know for a fact that I will be losing that damn dongle because when I had this phone, I lost it constantly. Bad idea.
still no headphone jack!! android giants adopted it too, damnit.
The G1 was ahead of its time!
I miss this type of phones with keyboard, I remember having this phone I felt so cool
What? No 3.5mm Jack...???
Guess Apple copied this ancient Android with the iPhone 7, eh?!!
Prince Xamim at least they made something better out of that garbage :)
Back in 2008, this phone used to be brand new, hi-tech, amazing and expensive. If you had one, your friends would be jealous. Now, only homeless people use it.
G1 worth a ton on ebay for collectors.
same with iphone 6 lmao, people will think that you're poor if you still use it today, although it used to be a highly anticipated flagship in 2014
Nikolaos Vamvakas I member these days 😆
@@maximilianuspramudyakrisna2370 nahh it's old but iphone is still an iphone
I just realized this video is 9 years old. I tought it would be about the old days of phones, but it is actually in the old days of the phone
Awhhhh, my mum used to have this phone back in 2009. It was around the time Michael Jackson died and the phone actually came with Michael Jackson songs, I'm guessing to remember him.
RIP Michael Jackson
***** True tbh
I still have my G1. It blew my mind at the time. As the first Android phone, I'll never get rid of it.
Nick Loz how do i cut it on? i found my moms
Nic Loz
I just bought an HTC Incredible since it was my fav phone of all time. Had to relive the moment and ordered it from Cellular Seller.
@@MissTrishLyn hold the end call button to turn it on
I bet you voted for sniffden and think Donald Trump didn't try to illegally overturn the election
watching this because the iPhone 7 won't have a headphone jack. The first Android phone didn't have a headphone jack either
It did, but required a extention because of the port.
and? it was the FIRST android smartphone, not the 9th generation
Dontay Banks Oh excuse me sorry, and you have make a big deal about it and call me a a**hole?
+xXJayKaiXx *an
yes, apples making the same mistakes Android did 8 years ago... round of applause
The market needs a good QWERTY slider. But, nowadays, we are obsessed with thinness.
I like thicc tho
What about Dvorak/Colemak/Workman sliders?
... and QWERTZ
Thin smartphones are horrible. A light feeling smartphone feels cheap, and it comes along with horrid battery life. I’m happy starting to see apple learn their lesson finally.
Yes I love the integrated tweets on the throwback videos.
My first smartphone.
Hehe
ayy me too
My first smartphone: Redmi 1S
Pocketnow is really top-notch. Your love of tech shines through. Great video and series!
it truly was ahead of it’s time, now most phones don’t include a headphone jack, despite many of them being plenty large enough to include it.
i guess android beat iphones at not having a headphone jack XD
Gipsar 😂hahaaahahhhhhhaaaaa
Ahh yes the android edition of the HTC Touch Pro. Just picked up a Touch Pro to relive the Touch Flo 3D nostalgia. Wish I could still activate this thing haha.
I was working at a phone customer service hotline when this thing came out. It was sold out immediately after its release, and I remember people calling us very upset, asking where they could get the very last G1s... Aaaah, the good ol' days :P
Lol, I hated Andriod when it first came out. WebOS on the Palm Pre felt easier and more user friendly. It wasnt until the first Motorola Droid, that I actually saw all of the potential Android offered, after that Android exploded into everything.
THE G1 PREPARED US FOR THE DAY THE IPHON LOST THE HEADPHONE JACK
Maybe the next throwback review should be of the original Samsung Galaxy S.
I still have my S2 as my daily driver
+Jordan Woolery I still have my Galaxy S Vibrant Tmobile.
black .thanos My dad still has his Galaxy S, though I hope he goes for a new S6 when they go to the carrier this month.
Still using i9000 as my daily phone with 5.1.1
+EJ Tech how is the S2? Is it good or laggy?
Lol, it's been 8 years and Apple just copied the "single port for charging and earphones" idea from Android.

say from htc
Pocketnow do a throwback on the original Motorola Droid! That phone was the true game changer!!
I'm still using the original Droid
To some people, yes. Was just a fairly large Android device with a good keyboard. It was, however, not available on all carriers, and quite ugly. Oh, and it sparked to have everyone call Android devices as 'Droids', which drives me up the wall. lol
YouonPictures To be more precise, my droid is the Asian Version. I guess it is the same with European version as it is also called Milestone. That's said, I don't have to stick with Verison. I'm using a SIM card from T-mobile now.
still better than a mac
I have this G1 and it is amazing. I still have it on my shelf as a piece of history
2018 anyone?
In 2008 I had a Sony Ericsson Z770, I loved that phone! Then switched to the SE W508
I remember I got this in 2008 before I had kids and responsibilities ...I traded my sidekick in for credit and paid cash and got it everyone was jealous stupid shot was impressive on it like a barcode scanner lol and and I felt like the man boy have times changed... now I have the iPhone XR and this phone is like a dinosaur lol good times
My first phone was the HTC Legend. Great phone but a little small. Went to the HTC One M8 which I find is a little too big. Would prefer something in between with the M8 functions. I honestly don't know how anyone finds the phablets comfortable.
"the g1 is actually almost 5 years old"
Interesting to hear when watching the video 7 years later
this was one of the best phones i ever owned....
I loved this phone and getting it early. Even though I wanted an IPhone , we were stuck with T-Mobile. I’ve missed it and my pearl but have stuck with apple since.
pretty surprising design for old thing
It's hilarious how iOS came out in 2007 and Android officially came out in 2009. Android mature date- 2011. iOS mature date- hasn't happened.
No one cares bro
waykool698 Don't you have better things to do than look back at comments from a year ago?
Peyton Walker not that I know of...
I believe it was 2008 for Android, and you are correct it was about 2011 when android started to seriously kick ass.
Lol why are you android fans so delicate
I laughed @ this stupid thing when someone who had it showed it to me... She said, "Watch it! Someday you might OWN an HTC!" I said, "No way! Not something ridiculous like THAT!" ---- 9 years later.... Watching this on my HTC 10... GAHHH!
I actually want to buy this phone just to experience Android 1.0
I've never tried any version of Android below 2.3
Evan Coleman my Kindle fire first generation runs Android 2.3
In that year, they are no matter about big bezel, no 18:9 screen, no portrait mode or 4K recording or super slowmo, no wireless charging, and...
reply to add......
...a battery that it's incredibly hard to replace...
The track ball was probably one of my favorite feature on all of the early android devices. Would love to get my hands on an old G1 but I cant really justify buying one just to play around with it every once and a while.
It looks rough as hell today, but this phone really was revolutionary for 2008.
That calculator was fantastic lol.
This throwback needs a throwback
I still have this phone in a drawer.
Prior to the G1 I had not been impressed with smartphones, but the G1 changed all that for me. This first Android (Google) phone was exactly what I wanted at the time and got me hooked on smartphones. I used it until I upgraded to the Blackberry Storm 2.
Why do people think android 1.0 was on devices the was just the framework of android the 1.1 was the framework and hardware. 1.2 was Linux GUI test with both before 1.3 was Software plus the previous mentioned then her was cupcake and the g1 1.4 then next was the preupdate to donut 1.5 which gave us on screen keyboard the full donut 1.6 and final version of OEM until 2.0 eclair ROM which broke the g1 because not able to do.
Original iPhone next? Or perhaps the Nexus One...
Fantastic look back though, really interesting stuff!
My first android was the HTC Wildfire.
Back in the day you had to love the G1, that was my first smartphone and I thought I was the coolest kid walking. The G1 opened the door for the Sidekick smartphone if anyone remembers. Now the Sidekick was where it's at. Once I got my hand on a Sidekick I said to myself I'm never getting rid of this phone and guess what I STILL HAVE IT. not sure if it works I have to find a way to charge too see as I don't have the cord for it.
I wanted the iPhone but t mobile wanted £600 upfront plus one of their highest plans and I had the friends and family discount.
I refused to pay £600 for a phone and they offered me the G1 for free.
I'm so glad I got into Android. People seem to forget that *this device was shitting on the iPhone even then* and cyanogenmod made it untouchable for all the customisation and it's work rate compared to cumbersome iPhone.
Umm iPhone was not on T-Mobile back then until a year ago for the iPhone 5.
Dan Whyte Definitely was available.
Yoda on DMT nope only at&t look it up because iPhone did not even have a market place aka app store until a year later the iPhone 5 was the first to be on T-Mobile back in 2013 maybe you are getting your dates wrong.
Dan Whyte Ah! You're talking about america.
Wasn't the same here in blighty.
wait don't u live in the UK? I'm pretty sure there's no tmobile in the UK
Android manufacturers need to drop Qualcomm. They are pieces of shit. Their processors are ok, but they are keeping Android down. There is a reason why apple has such a dedicated fan base and the processors are a part of that reason. This is not a apple argument I'm making. I am typing this on my s8 plus. I just think that they are hurting Android as a whole with their limitations.
Better than my first phone back in early 2008 I need a 3.5 to 2.5mm headphones jack adapter the
Sideekick slide
I remember trading my Samsung Behold for the G1... That guy made the dumbest mistake ever because the G1 was amazing for its time.
watching this on my s7 edge 😂
Ahead of its time when it first came out I remembered going to the mall and looking at the iPhone sell people would ask what kind of phone I would have I would say G1 Android they would just turn around and walk away lol
They need to remake this exact design but with improved screen hardware and WiFi in 2020
Now Galaxy S4 is almost 5 years old. How time change
We used to call it the HTC Nightmare. It was truly awful.
i'm an avid iPhone user but i still remember this phone. My dad waited in line for hours to get it, definitely one of smartphones greatest classics
I remember seeing the commercial for that. I was about 7 years old and I thought that it was the coolest thing ever. I didn't even have a phone yet. I have an HTC One X now.
That was my first smartphone! Then I got the first Motorola Droid and I've been rocking an iPhone ever since. To each their own.
Not trying to hate on iPhones, but I think you should really check out the new Androids. They are truly great smartphones!
+Joni Johnson Nexus 5 is a great phone. It's at 3 years old phone and still works great. Battery life is also still great. I had an iPhone 4s before that and it took me almost a year to adapt to the change and find out where everything was. I'd say both are great phones, but the iPhone 4s slowed down much quicker than the Nexus 5. (Which still runs OK, but gets warm when watching 1080p videos, lags every so often, and switches between 4g and 3g way to often)
I loved this phone! Miss the keyboard to this day, although now android keyboards touch-keyboards actually work as they should Im still nastolgic over this one.
It had the great keyboard, so easy to type on.
i find it funny that this video is twice as old to me now than the htc was to him when he made this video.
This video is now almost 5 years old, just like the G1 was back when this video was made. Wow. Yet this video seems still pretty new
My first android phone - HTC Hero
Phone so old even the most viewed throwback video is 9 years old wow!
The very first smartphone I had was a Blackberry Pearl, then fed up with being able to do nothing on it I upgraded to the Curve. At the time I thought it was awesome! But still felt it was lacking in many features. Then my Curve got stolen from me in Chicago. I searched out for a new phone and lo and behold there it was the G1! I had an unfortunate incident where I dropped the phone and shattered the screen. I loved the phone so much that I ended up just getting a new one. Unfortunately that one got stolen in Africa. Since then I've stuck with Android and won't get another phone without Android. Currently I have the Galaxy Note 3, and it's fricken awesome!
I have a G2................I should probably upgrade
This thing was dying after a few months to the thousands ...
I remember buying 4 of these used in 1 week and ALL of the where broken ...
(The shop selling them was a good friend of mine and he wasn't scamming me ...I know cause all other devices worked perfectly fine)
Those were the days the phone manufacturers tried daring designs.
Not only did I watch this for the HTC Dream throwback, but I also watched it for Michael Fischer Pocketnow era throwback :D
this was my 1st touch screen phone..
I used to have one of these, and I have literally no idea whar happened to it..I thinl I found it a few years later, but apparently it broke or something, I don't know
I have always wondered which was the first Android phone I never thought HTC was the branded the that made it thank you for informing me
No headphone jack huh? But ppl hate the iPhone 😂 so corny
How far we’ve come.
Kind of a shame that Android is becoming less mod-friendly over time, though I guess it’s a sad inevitability due to it becoming more and more mainstream.
Still to this day one of my favorite phones of all time i loved the G1
My first android phone was a LG optimus GT540 in October 2010. Biggest heap of shit that I ever owned. The battery wouldn't even lasted 8 hrs (My 2 and a half year old Galaxy S4 has better battery life). It almost put me off the android ecosystem completely. I got so annoyed with it, that I just went back to an old Sony Ericsson k800i. I eventually upgraded to the HTC Desire HD in March 2011. That phone was so much better then the LG and restored my faith in android.
First i thought why did Michael fisher make a vid for pocketnow then i saw that it's a 4 years old vid
My 1st smartphone
The first time I experienced the G series of phones was in Denver but it was in 2010 and the T-Mobile store had the G2. I thought it was a great device but never got it. My first Android was a Motorola Droid X and I thought it was amazing. I wish I could have kept it. Then I used an iOS device when it was at iOS 6 I believe and the ability to find my downloaded apps from the app store instead of trying to search for them all over again made me switch. Fortunately, Android's Play Store corrected that and now I use almost every platform.
Ah, memories
lol
It's easy to forget that this video is 5 years old
I'm watching this on a Z Fold 4, how far we've come. Wasn't my first Android handset, that was the HTC T-Mobile G2. And Mr. Mobile looks like he belonged in a boy band back in the day 🤣
My first android phone. I still consider one of the best smart phones in it's time RIP G1
im gonna be completely honest... Im buying this thing for $125 asa collectors item, and maybe even some rooting too. Ive wanted this device as to use as a challenge for a day or so, no new technology, super excited to save up my money!
Who's are searching HTC DREAM in 2023
you are in desember 2022 -_-
@@gurucantik6217 well I’m here now in 2023
I wished I had this back in 2008 . Would had been a remarkable success to develop my spirituality
The first android phone sucked back then. Today, Newer android phones still suck. Google will never be as great as apple
prove me wrong
My first Android was an iPad ripoff with something like 1.6 I think. Broke it in 3 days. Also had when I was 7 years old.
I have the Galaxy Note 3 (4.3) Bold 9000 and the LG C555 (2.2) on my desk right now!
Man I remember my mom giving me her G1. The things you could do just blew my mind. Changing the notification light was ludicrous back then. The app that allows you to get a police radio was crazy. When mine died I got a G2 for free. That device was amazing. Been rocking with android ever since
I found this phone in the weight room in highschool in 9th grade, I couldn't get it unlocked. I told myself once im up, I'll buy this phone no matter the time. I graduated In 2013, I found that phone in 9th grade. I'm 30 now, in 2024. I'm buying this phone in about a week.
I had a Samsung Galaxy Ace 5830 which was my first Android Device. Was also great. Ran Gingerbread and 4.x with Cyanogen-Mod. Still know that day I flashed it and it was crazy!
now this video needs a throwback 😅
One of my favorite phone of all time legend!
since my I phone 4 broke.. I have been using the HTC dream/ G1 after 3 years out of use! ~ Could do with a new battery.. ~
with todays technology, the dream could be really powerful!
¿Pero por qué el título del vídeo está en Eapañol y hablan en inglés?. ¡Hablen en Español, por favor!...
My first smartphone was the Motorola MB300 Backflip. It was really great. It had a nice real keyboard. The screen was nice as well. The only thing that sucked was ATT's shitty service.
Any chance of a Nexus S ATB? It is kind of the phone that solidified Samsung's former crown of Android. A title that lasted until 2014 IMHO
This kind of phone should make a comeback
Before I was an Apple user, I was a Sidekick user... Is it just me who had one of those? XD I know this has nothing to do with the HTC Dream, but it seems like many people forget about the Sidekick.
I actually liked that phone but as with many things, I became bored with it after a year or so. It was definitely better than the lame ' Eric Clapton ' my touch phone that I switched for.
And unfortunately T mobile's crappy reception and service didn't help either.
I see this phone when i studying computer every sunday and when it's time to go home.i am window shopping or looking at the phone only.some are fake or some are original electronics when i seen this model unfortunately no battery in that phone i have seen approximately 7 HTC G1
And some Xperia phones and all iPhone models
my brother had this phone.. it was absolute shit at the time, the apps we're so watered down back then. He used to jump on my iPhone 3G to play the better versions of the apps he had on it.. Eventually he dumped the g1 for an iPhone 3G.
Holding it in my hand right now... This thing is my pride and joy!
I love this throwback line of videos. Keep up the good work!
