I always ask! Best garage sale find about 2 years ago was a stack that was in the house and brought out in a paper bag after I asked. It had a Green Lantern #1, Richie Rich #1, 1st Bat-Mite and more. Told him I have $37 in my pocket and he said "Sold"! I got home looked them over and went back to his garage sale and gave him a few hundred more. Never been that lucky since, but I keep asking!
Good on you for doing that my man, I still haven't haven't has such early golden age or silver luck but I think that's the right thing to do if I ever do
Based on what I've read, the newsstand copies are more rare in good condition due to the fact that many were sold through non-comic shops, like grocery or department stores and were likely sold to kids or random buyers and more likely were handled with less care than a comic shop and being bought by collectors. So bottom line it's just fewer copies in high grades.
I suppose, funny thing is the newsstand of Secret Wars 1 was more commonly printed that year than the dircet! That's why I'm scratching my head. I suppose people keep better care of direct though
@@MintHunterComics My assumption is it all comes down to the buyers of the newsstand vs the direct copies. The kids buying at the five and dime shop who read the crap out of it, and/or threw it away later on vs the collectors who bought direct or at the comic shop. Even with a larger run for a special release like Secret Wars, I bet there are fewer in decent condition that survived. I know the newsstand copy I bought as a kid is pretty beat up!
Hit about 10 yard sales last week when I was down visiting my folks. No comic books (though I didn't ask). Went to one last week where the family bought abandoned storage units. Didn't see any comics, but asked, and was told they had just acquired some boxes. The husband had set those aside, and he was not home currently, so I gave my contact info. Haven't heard from them, so I may swing by this weekend to follow up.
High grade newsstand books from the late 80's and up and both shorter print and condition sensitive, thats why folks are willing to pay more for them slabbed in high grade , especially really good stories, because you know they were likely read and reread and got beat up. The newer the newsstand, the shorter the print count so the rarer it is to fine a high grade copy. But from 85 and earlier, newsstand should not mean anything, but since there are so many uneducated collectors out there, some still demand the same premiums .
Actually as CGC data and eBay surveys are bearing out, newsstand does/will increasingly hold a premium for all decades because the majority of buyers were not collector-savvy and did handle them with care and bag and board them; most buyers at comic shops (direct editions) were.
Another great video James. Very cool finds. It is interesting how some books have a huge premium for newsstand copies while others don't. I think for the most part it is books with huge print runs like the Secret Wars books, Spawn #1 & #9, key GI Joe & Transformers books etc. Basically all the stuff that I grew up liking. lol. I noticed that you are up to 7.22k subscribers. That's awesome man!
Thanks for watching! and yeah any newsstands after 84/85 are more valuable (but not necessarily before!) I guess I'm jsut not sure how Secret Wars 1 cgc 9.8 newsstand is worth $1,500 whereas the direct is only $350? strange...
Loving your vids! When I was collecting in the 90s, newsstand copies were considered second tier behind direct market copies. Interested to hear why you rate newsstand copies
Yard sales, flea markets and antique shops are all on my go to list. My best purchases have come from these. I still hit the local comic book stores in my area but only with a purpose in mind.
