You don't have to remove the glow plug to test it.
    1. Remove all the jumper links between the glow plugs and remove the power wire to the first glow plug.
    2. Use an ohm meter and connect one end to a known ground on the engine and connect the other lead of your meter to the threaded connector where your removed the jumper wires.
    3. You should see around 1 - 6 ohms.
    4. If you see 0 ohms the glow plug is bad and is shorted
    5. If you see no ohms the glow plug is bad and is open
This method will save you a lot of time verses removing glow plugs to check them.

Thank you, this helps me big time. Just picked up a 743, it helps knowing where the relays are located and replacing those.

I used ether on my 643 bobcat. Ended up with a major overhaul required including replacing a cracked head. It says right on the valve cover that ether will cause immediate damage. Easiest way to test glow plugs is to disconnect all of them from the power then use a test light between the positive battery post and touch each glow plug terminal with the test light. If the test light glows then the glow plug is good.

Great video!! Ignore the trolls. Maybe they should take the time you did and do their expert video. They don't, because they are lost. If they weren't, they would not have found your video through a search lol! Doing mine tomorrow. Thanks again.

For this model i mounted a glow plug up front so when i turn them on i can see what is going on inside the engine.

spraying airostart in a high compression diesel motor can brake the crank shaft. only use it on a motor with very poor compression . i snapped my crank shaft on my ruggerini diesel engine and i didn't use to much spray

Nice video but glow plugs are not like Christmas lights, meaning, if one goes out they don’t all go out. They are all connected to the power source in parallel so if a plug fails, the other three still get power.

Does anyone know how you heat up the glow plugs on this unit? Do you turn key to the left and push button or turn to the right and push button? Help super cold and it's not starting. Thanks :)

Turn the key to the left. No button

  • @573customs6

Where is the button for the glow plugs suppose to be? Mine has been rigged up and trying to straighten it all out.

    • @fitzsfixes
      @fitzsfixes  3 года назад +1

It's supposed to be on the key switch. You turn the key counterclockwise and hold it for a bit, and the glow plugs heat up. Mine was rigged, and I put a toggle switch next to the key.

This is my first skidsteer. Ive owned it for a few years. I was told by the last 2 owners that it had to be started with starting fluid when its cold. I tried my glow plugs out like you said its on the key switch. Guess what? They work. Lmao. I bet those babies are like new since the last 2 owners never used them.lol also this is my first deisel engine and im still learning about them. Ive been a gas burner mechanic for 15 years and have never messed with deisel.

Not sure you're testing those plugs correctly. The ohm test is across the circuit, not across the heating element. Not sure conducting electricity through the skin of the heating element means anything. Test across the Positive threaded post at the top and the Negative threaded base at the bottom. This completes the normal circuit and you can see if you get an ohm reading (correctly working), no reading at all (circuit is broken), or full continuity (no ohms - heating element has shorted). Either way, just replace the 3 easy ones since your in there and greasy anyway...they are only $6/ea.

why buy the glow plugs from bobcat ? my Kubota dealer had the original Kubota V1702 glow plugs for $10 ea. many times I bought Bobcat engine parts that came in a bobcat box with Kubota stamped on the part.

TheMrmack070 no kubota dealer anywhere near me. and the 1 place that had a kubota tractor, didn't have the part

Never ever put starting fluid in a Diesel engine... unless you are trying to destroy it... When you put new glow plugs in put one more new one next to the key and wire it in like all the rest that way you can see what the engine ones are doing. Sorry i only saw the first minute couldn't look any longer...

My tractor has a diesel with no glow plugs and it has an ether injector built right into the fuel system. It usually will not start without ether.

+Bob Warren People only believe what they've read, or what someone has told them. If the guy understood that the glow plugs on my machine were manually turned on, he'd understand that if they aren't on, the likelihood of ether damaging the engine is very small. Thank you for watching

Thank-you for a lot of false information. Your first mistake was rigging a switch with no spring return to the off position. You or somebody left it in the on position way too long and burned up your glow plugs. Second mistake: glow plug circuit is parallel, not series as you describe. Third: you don't need to remove plugs to test. simply remove the wires from plugs and check continuity from terminal to ground; approximately 1 ohm is good. Reading continuity at the tip will give false results as it is covered with carbon, read from terminal to threaded area on main body. Fourth: keep spraying starting fluid and next video will be "HOW TO REPLACE ENGINE ON MY 743 BOBCAT" I'm sure you have good intentions but keep your inexperience to yourself and we will all be a lot better off.

alright first off, thanks for watching and commenting. second, nowhere in my channel does it say I'm a pro. My videos are just how I get by with what I have. so take it easy with the insults, keyboard hero. btw, the glowplugs were hooked up to a springed return switch. watch again before opening tour yap. have a great day!

While I agree with the majority of your post and was going to comment my self on the testing of the system but U pretty well cover it correctly. I will say your just being a fucking ASS n It should be U keeping your IGNORANCE to Yourself. While something like a WD40 is a much better option Starting fluid works just fine IF U DONT OVER DO IT! A LITTLE goes a very long way. N wouldn't be my first choice but out in the field U use what U have. I have used starting fluid over 30 years NEVER ONCE had an Issue!!!!!!!

You name the video glow plug replacement but don't show how to replace them. Sure you explain how but don't show yourself actually doing it. People watch these videos because they don't know what they are doing .

Dan, if you need to see how to unscrew a glow plug from a block, you probably shouldn't do the job. My head, hand, and camera didn't fit in the same area. So I thought a detailed explanation would be fine
