Adobe is becoming a champion of annoying changes. I am not a professional user, so I’ll juggle between various versions of PS. Advice you gave us long ago to keep the older versions paid off. Thanks for the precise and detailed info Colin.

This was very well presented. Just another reason why everyone loves to hate Adobe. I would love to see Adobe take up your suggestion for Lighting Effects, it's to one feature I'll miss the most and why I'll keep a second older version. Bummer about Dn, I guess Adobe needs to pay for Substance but it really needs to be part of all apps, or all apps is really not all apps. Thank you.

This answers my question if they were going to suspend 3D from older versions as well. I’m happy that you still can use older installations. Thanks for the clarification 👍

Screw them with this nickel and diming stuff. I already went to the basic plan and replaced illustrator with Affinity Designer, I guess it's time to learn Blender now and I may just dump this greedy company altogether by switching to Affinity Photo.
On the plus side, I've never been the first to comment before, so thanks for getting me worked up. Lol

I still have PS 2019 basically for the 3D functionality. I frequently use it to make 3D "postcards" which I can easily import into Poser or DAZ Studio. It's a quick and easy way to do things like placing a scene outside a window - say a nice sunset, or a night city scene. There are other ways to do this, but this is one of the quickest, easiest, and lightest (as far as file size of the 3D file). I've used it quite a bit for creating simple props as well. I still need to try and get into Blender (which will likely make my head explode... LOL). Thanks for clearing this up, Colin!

I use 3d in Photoshop quite a lot. It is straightforward to work with, accepts any image format as base and one can record Actions which means similar tasks only is needed to be done the once. I tried to learn Blender but it introduced the hassle of needing to convert to svg’s and the pain that is unworkable meshes, fighting with lighting, complex user interface, and only God knows how to record something similar to that of Actions in Photoshop. During my little research I have yet to find a replacement, but I hope that some know-howers will create something similar to how 3d in Photoshop works.

I have Windows and have two versions of Photoshop installed, Colin, but I've never been able to run them together. I actually hate it when they release a new version of Photoshop in October as the new versions are often buggy! So I've always kept an older version for that reason.

There are plug-ins that do as fine a job or better than the Lighting filter. While I'm disappointed that Adobe is making the Lighting filter obsolete, there are at least viable options that work in 32-bits.

@@alisonmeier5826 Digital Film Tools makes a plug-in called Rays that does a very good job. Luminar AI has Sunrays under its Creative options. You can add your own lighting effects in PS with tools like gradients. Lots of tutorials on it. Pretty easy to do with a Radial Gradient. Check out Blake Rudis and his f64 Academy site and his RUclips videos. He has shown different ways to add a lighting effect in PS many times. What I never liked out the Lighting Effects filter in Photoshop is the need to convert to 8-bits.

I use the 3d on photoshop for editing 360 spherical panorama photos is there any option with adobe for doing this going forwards (aside from using an old PS version)?
The only solution I can find is to buy affinity photo editor as that does what adobe seemingly can't, it has great 360 pano editing capability but I'd rather not have to fork out for that when I pay adobe for a full creative cloud suite.

sounds if Adobe is just forcing 3d users to "pay" for yet another awesome feature thats been in PS since Cs4 thats one of the reasons i have 3 versions on my pc as i have installed some awesome "plugins" in previous versions that do not work for the latter versions so flipping bkwrds and fwrds between PS versions is no big news for me i will continue using my other two versions ;)

My other versions do not go back that far. I have CS 6 Design Standard for windows but now use a Mac. They refused to support the old version which means I am SOL, out five hundred dollars and have donated four hundred dollars over the last four years. The only reason I change was the 3D feature.. I also lost Illustrator and InDesign because of this. Sounds like the stockholders need another yacht for their grand kids. So I am paying them for Ps and bridge, I do not use Lightroom. Wish they had been up front with us long ago.

Thanks for the heads up Colin will download an older version right away hmm as for Photoshops ideologies we all know it’s geared around Profit so nothing changes huh oh & I will remember to keep dimension too & lastly & this is directed at Adobe I hope in getting rid of something that many still use they’ll continue to add extra wow factors & quicker ways to do things etc in their future updates or quite frankly they’ll find themselves losing a ton of customers in my view!
World inflation is going through the roof so we don’t all have unlimited money trees & many of us work on budgets! I won’t mention the companies that are catching up with Adobe technologies inc AI & at a fraction of the cost too so hope they’ve thought this through..Thanks again!

We’ll see what the next major PS release brings, but for now it seems to me like Adobe’s motives are even becoming questionable where the digital painting is concerned. All the new brush and painting technology appears to be going into Fresco which of course you have to pay for if you want all the brushes for that new goodness. Oh, and it appears your completely out of luck if you’re a Mac user with anthing short of bleeding edge hardware and macOS since Fresco is only available on iOS and Windows.
On a side note, Adobe also removed the Color Themes panel from Photoshop forcing you to use their Color web site. More of an annoyance than outright removal. The thing is though, web browsers have historically (and notoriously) been inconsistent with color management over the years. That would seem to make them among the last places you would think you’d choose to migrate color creation and decision making functions to.

Up until they did this I was able to run two separate versions of photoshop. I kept 21.2.11 to run the 3D tools and it works. BUT, when I attempt to start the 22.5 version, it will not open. What it does is make the 21.2.11 version blink and then nothing, as if it's trying to open a program that is already open. They did something to it to kill the ability to run two versions at once, something which used to, not long ago, worked perfectly.
What it is a thieving scheme to "split" it up in to multiple applications that bloat your computer, wont' work seamlessly or easily together and try to force people that do not need or want all "all apps" expensive subscription to buy one and pay out the nose for for a bunch of JUNK that they do not need or want. Pure thievery is all it is. I know how their sorry minds work.
