I AM A 51 YEAR OLD AMERICAN AND I'M A HUGE MUSIC FAN. HAVE SEEN WELL OVER 2000 CONCERTS AND HAVE 3000+ CD'S IN MY COLLECTION. BUT I MUST ADMIT I NEVER HEARD OF KIM MITCHELL TILL I SAW HIM MENTIONED ON AN EPISODE OF TRAILER PARK BOYS ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO. NOW I HAVE 7 OR 8 CD'S OF HIS AND I LOVE THEM. HE WAS HIDDEN DOWN HERE IN THE STATES.
For American Kim Mitchell/Max Webster fans, the common ‘gateway drug’ was the song Battle Scar, off of Max’ last album, Universal Juveniles, released in 1980. Battle Scar was performed by both Max Webster and RUSH-in the studio! Two drummers- Gary “Stix” McCracken and Neil Peart; two bassists- Dave Myles and Geddy Lee; two guitarists- Kim Mitchell and Alex Lifeson; two singers- Kim and Geddy; and one keyboardist- Terry Watkinson. And...it sounds like it! As Neil described it, “...a Wagnerian tumult!” This is one of the most epic, heavy, rock songs ever recorded! I like/love all of Max’ albums, but Universal Juveniles is their crowning achievement-in my opinion. Find it any way you can. And, Kim’s solo material is wonderful. So much heart, groove, creative harmonic structure, and incredible guitar playing, along with many great lyrics by Max’ lyricist, Pye Dubois. I was blessed to take a vacation to Vancouver and Victoria, Canada, in 1998, and made a major goal to find a record store, where I bought CDs of the entirety of Max’ collection, plus a couple of Kim’s albums. Still some of my favorites!!! Kim is a master! 🤘🏻🎸🤘🏻
I've heard Kim Mitchell in the mid 80's a bit. Then later I'd run trucks from Syracuse to Buffalo and listen to a Canadian rock station and hear more KM, April Wine, Loverboy, Triumph, Rush, Coney Hatch and obscure bands out of Canada like Tea Party, Wide Mouth Mason and othe great bands out of there. I got exposed to more music due to the reason Canadian stations like Q103 Bay/Bloor radio were required to play mostly Canadian rock bands. We need more Kim Mitchell in our lives!!
This has been the question I've been asking myself for decades. I first got into the music of Kim Mitchell back in the Max Webster days. And since going solo in 1984 he's put out a number of hit songs. And during my touring days with Sass Jordan, we did a number of show's with Kim. And the stories from his Cheap Trick days are all true. In more than one conversation during late night bus rides, Rick and Bun E. had their stories to tell about Kim. I've never understood why he fell off the radar here in the US after his third album. When he performs in Canada, he can fill arenas and outdoor stadiums. So again I don't understand why he doesn't perform more in America. His music is hard and heavy, and fun and exciting to listen to. Kim's the total package! Rock.On Eh! 🇨🇦😎☮️🇺🇸
I lived in Sarnia, Ontario in my teens. I saw Kim Mitchell perform many times. This guy rocked and his guitar skills are surely underrated. Was always a great time and was proud he was Canadian. To the point of this video he likely got little or no airplay in the U.S.
So I knew about Go for Soda when it came out, because in my teenage years in Wyoming we had a satellite dish and we would watch MuchMusic videos. Then I joined the Navy, and 97.3 KRQR-FM in San Francisco played Patio Lanterns in 1986 on a regular rotation, and I just thought it was the coolest song ever. After that, Kim Mitchell just kind of disappeared on me, and I wasn't really exposed as much to Canadian music except those nailing it in the States. Then, in 2017 I moved to the Olympic Peninsula and could pick up the Canadian rock stations on a regular basis, and it was like this perfect chance to catch up on all the Canadian music I never got a chance to be exposed to while I finished my career. All We Are and Lager and Ale were part of the catch-up process for me via Jack-FM and the Q. I am now a huge Tragically Hip fan, and got reacquainted with Tom Cochrane. I think Lawrence Gowan joining Styx was the smartest thing either he or the band could do, because Gowan's got what it takes to artistically rock out.
I've been saying that for decades!! love Kim Mitchell! I'm from the US but was fortunate to see Kim Mitchell live a few times, we worked at the same venue a couple of times in Canada.
Been buying and collecting Kim/Max music for years. Live in the Twin Cities but sometimes had to drive north to Duluth or something to get Kim's records. It's easier today with distribution being easier but it was worth the drive.
Max Webster drew from so many different styles of rock n roll with a touch of artsy wackiness. Kim's voice is very unique. you always now it's him. But I gotta say, as a Canadian, I think Kim is my favourite guitar player in Canada. On his Q107 radio show he always played it down (his guitar playing), so humble but man that guy's got some serious chops! Very inventive.
Kim Mitchell, one of my absolute favs, and someone I've never been able to see live:( Please Kim, make a stop in Edmonton when you tour your new album!!!
Being a fellow Canadian I love so much of Kim's music. I saw him 6 times and he and his band are brilliant live. He is so underrated it's not even funny. I even remember that Miami Vice episode where there is a brawl in a Bar and you have the song: "Go for soda" playing out loud. If you ever get a chance to listen to "all we are" live with that build up guitar solo, It's priceless. I still have the song "Aint life amazing" on my workout playlist. Amazing it is.
I've been a fan since Diamonds, Diamonds. Kim is one of the most underrated guitarists/Singers/Musicians around. Always interesting harmonically and rhythmically. I would love to see Kim live. Unfortunately, living in the Southeastern part of the US makes it difficult to find a show that I can actually drive to that's less than 800 miles away.
My wife and I just got back from Buffalo to see Kim. If it wasn't for Trailer Park Boys, I would've forgotten entirely about him. That's a shame. He's a very underrated guitarist and has very good taste in musicians.
It used to be that Max Webster was a secret codeword in the Unites States. Certain musicians and bands are like that. In the mid Atlantic U.S. Max Webster was only known for the song Battlescar, and even then, you had to be a dedicated radio listener to catch it once a month. But especially as a musician, mentioning Max Webster was an instant in. A well kept secret that. no one tried to keep.I wanted to turn everyone on to them, and tried. Sort of like saying the name R. Stevie Moore. In some cases, just knowing a band would make you like an instant, long lost brother. Max Webster was like that for me. To this day, since I first heard Max Webster in the 80s, I have still met less than two people who know who they are. It's annoying and a real shame.
Might as well go for a soda. Nobody hurts and nobody cries. Nobody drowns and nobody dies. I love to rock that song. It's really the only song I've ever heard Kim Mitchell do. Maybe I need to explore this a little further. I understand now why I didn't hear much from him back in the day. His success in the states wasn't as big. But I still hear his name a lot
There’s a way you can tell when someone was alive in the late 70’s and early 80’s, in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. You play 2 seconds of Patio Lanterns to someone saying they’re were born and raised there, if they guess right, you know they’re telling the truth.
Joseph Kim Mitchell.... Loved hearing you tell Kim that your wife - Jan? Loved one of, OR his music. Kim sounded very touched by that compliment. i just listened to a clip earlier today with an internet ( a bald guy) age 56 then ~ Craig? Interviewing him when Kim was 68, with Kim in his home sitting on a White couch n interior = a 1:35 long clip. John, I HOPE you already Have, or will hear the story he told of when he lost his balance on stage due to backing up and his heel finding a wide crack in the stage, that made him fall backwards. . Knocking a wall of Marshall amps and stands etc. over . The funny part was: when Kim's bass' ( who always called him Joe ) walked across the stage to check on him - just walks over n looks down at Kim, and calmly says: Where you goin Joe?? Kimmologo JOE ~ Max Webster will Always Make Canada Very PROUD for Decades !!! " MAN He's Played with almost everyone in bands in North n South America, and Europe. What a Life Bio to research everyone...
Seriously? I'm not going to sit here and tell you the whole story of when Kim Mitchell was invited down to LA by Joe Walsh himself because he heard some of his music, and wanted him to discuss a collaboration effort, but in all seriousness? It's a story you really have to hear from the man himself, Mr Kim Mitchell. It's the most hilarious thing I've ever heard about how crazy Joe Walsh really was back when he had piles and piles of white powder 24/7, and all the hard alcohol that he so famously brags about today! Try to find it it's worth it
@@davekiddie4467 W/all due respect; I disagree, Dave. There r similarities btwn C.T. & M.W.!!!!!! The REALl FUCKIN' INSULT was that M.W. NVR HAD RECOGNITION IN THE U.S.A.!!!!!
PAYOLA costed Kim Mitchell MAJOR SUCCESS in the U.S.A.!!!!!! If it wasn't 4 fellow Canadian IAN THOMAS (who got the BIGGEST FUCKIN' SCREWJOB EVER), Kim Mitchell (despite his ties 2 Rush) would've been (wrongfully) considered as an afterthought..FYI, Kim did contribute on Ian's 1975 hit "Liars" (a song that completely speaks out against PAYOLA). Bc of Ian Thomas, Randy Bachman, Gordon Lightfoot, Robbie Robertson, Myles Goodwyn, Rik Emmett, & especially Kim Mitchell; I truly have a MAJOR AFFINITY 4 Canadian musicians. Being from Detroit, MI (USA) only rein4ces that affinity.
Simply because his music was just generic and there was plenty of that already around in the US, Kim fit in with the Billy Squiers and the like, but wasn't as talented a songwriter or vocalist. The biggest reason he was succesful in Canada for a few years was Can-Con rules that force radio stations to play a high percentage of Canadian content inside of Canada. It was fortunate for artists, but not so much for music fans, as it means we still to this day have Bryan Adams, Alanis, and Kim shoved down our throats at least 2-3 times a day on any classic rock station you put on in Canada.
Max Webster was barely a blip on the radar. Cmon now. You're talking Kim Mitchell and Max Webster up like they were a well known and huge group. Big hits??? Not from Max Webster...
How many Canadian groups headlined Maple Leaf Gardens three times in under two years ? Max Webster were huge, at least in Ontario. All their records went gold, and one platinum - in a time when albums were everything, not singles.
@ Ron James - In Canada he is huge...this is the point of the video. Why did Rush break so big in the U.S. but Max Webster did not? We thought they every bit as good. They were also a party band but I think you have to be Canadian get it. It's just one of those things. His talent is undeniable, he can play with anyone.

Trailer Park Boys is a Canadian treasure for reasons like this alone.
He is a legend and a guitar hero here in Canada! Sorry the US missed out on his hay days, man they were amazing!!
Your capitals is stuck.
Kim is and always been , a seriously good guitarist.
You've always kept your music real Kim.
Thank you for your rock and roll duty 💪🇨🇦
Kim is GOAT caliber there really is no question. Very modest and understated as well. Great guy.
Absolutely love Kim Mitchell!! Way under rated.
Discovered MW in 77 / 78 after finding Hangover and High Class in borrowed Shoes in a used record store in Atlanta. Became an immediate fan

Ever since I saw Max open for UFO, RUSH, I never forgot how friggin good they were. Unusual band. Great feedback, sustain on that 347.
I’d love an interview with Jefferson starship guitarist Craig Chaquico
Ditto here; a MASTER of the 2-finger tap technique (along w/Queen's Brian May) yet the L8, GR8 EVH gets solely credited 4 that a4mentioned technique.
He wasn't that well known in the UK either and then only by the Max Webster name.

AHH....NO CIGARETTES......UHH....A NO...., A MATCHES! 😂😂😂😂 If you don't know what I'm referring to? You don't know real classic Max Webster.

Too hip for the room....
