THE CAR DEAL BEFORE POLICE IMPERSONATION AND HARASSMENT
In May 2022, our client went to a Maryland used car dealer and agreed to purchase a vehicle. He signed a finance contract and made a $1,000 down payment. At the time, the dealer did not disclose to him that financing was not complete.
Our client left the dealership with the vehicle and believed that he was good to go.
Dealer Tries to Cancel Transaction Without Returning Down Payment
Several days after the purchase, an employee of the used car dealer called him and insisted that he return to the dealership to complete documentation. When he returned, he was told that he needed a co-signer.
When he explained that he did not have a co-signer, the employee told him that financing had fallen through and he needed to return the vehicle. Our client agreed to return the vehicle as long as his down payment would be returned, which is his right under Maryland’s Spot Delivery Law.
However, the dealer refused to provide his down payment to him, and our client drove away in the vehicle.
General Manager Impersonates Baltimore County Police Officer Police via Text Message
Shortly after leaving the dealership, our client received a text message stating “This is Ofc. Muclaster with Baltimore County Police before I process this report you need to return the vehicle to NAME OF USED CAR DEALER”.

CAR DEALER ILLEGAL DEBT COLLECTION PRACTICES
In Maryland, all debt collectors, including car dealers, are prohibited from engaging in illegal debt collection activities.
However, dealers often engage in illegal collection methods.
LAWSUIT FILED AFTER CAR DEALER IMPERSONATES POLICE
Maryland’s Spot Delivery Law - the dealer failed to provide required notices that financing was not approved, and refused to return the down payment at the time our client returned the vehicle.
Maryland Consumer Debt Collection Practices Act - the dealer engaged in abusive debt collection practices including impersonating police, harassing our client and calling his employer.

This beyond-ridiculous situation goes to show how the truth is often stranger than fiction. That general manager needs to be made an example out of. It would be great if the final outcome of this case can be shown on your channel, though I will most definitely be checking out Mr. Whitney's channel.

This is a pretty amazing story, and now I am curious how it ends up. Your commentary is great, by the way.
One slight editing note (as a former Maryland resident) . . . I think the name of the city is Towson, not Townsend, Maryland. Towson is the county seat of Baltimore County (not to be confused with Baltimore City), Maryland.
    You from Bawlmer, hon? LOL

There’s a car dealer near me in Houlton Maine that has a bad habit of doing work on customers vehicles without permission. Or installing parts that weren’t needed

I'm confused about something not mentioned: Was the Dealership GM arrested for impersonating a police officer? Depending on the jurisdiction, it can be a felony.

yeah exactly....surely there is criminal exposure here for the GM in addition to the civil stuff discussed in the video.

I’ve been working on a deal and just ran into a dealership that cannot seem to answer a question. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such tunnel vision! This dealership is near where I used to live and I still have family in that area. I do remember hear others mention the dealership but not whether it was good or bad. I think I now know the answer. It’s almost become comical.
Is there a way to at least give you the name of the dealership, to perhaps add to your dud list?

Text the Dealer name to Liz at 701-441-3399, and we'll put them on the dealer wall of shame!

@@KevinHunter Thanks. I’m not sure they are breaking any laws, but I’ve asked about 5 times for the OTD price with itemized fees and I’ve gotten back everything from the sale price is on the website to “I needed to know what you are trading in, how much you are financing and what city do you live in?” Yes, some of the cities in that area have extra taxes so I gave them a name I knew didn’t have extra taxes and I got back the tax percentage and a question about when I could come in. I don’t understand after 6 emails why they haven’t figured out it’s easier to answer questions! Btw, they asked for a zip code when I sent the original query so it should be pretty clear I’m not in their state, just driving distance. Off to send the text …. Thanks.

This seems bazaar to me. Doesn't this only happen to someone with credit problems where a loan won't go through? I never had these kinds of credit issues to where I couldn't buy a car.

Car dealerships are a MAJOR operation....so much overhead, etc and so they depend upon business to make consistent profits in order to stay in business. SO, WHY are so many dealerships so horrible, so unethical, so uncaring about how they service customers,,,,,fake/junk fees and all? A cluster of bad customer experiences can devastate a business.
