I was drafted into the Army back in 1970 which was an eye-opening experience. Thank you for your realistic info without trying to be sensational or to scare the new people wondering about Boot Camp. I'm sure your matter-of-fact presentation will be very helpful to those considering a military career.
I too, did Basic in 1970. At Ft. Lewis, we were in the old 2 story WWII wooden barracks and didn't have any "fancy" sides to the toilet stalls, because there were no stalls. Everything was done in the open, but just as the man says, you don't care. At my high school, you showered after gym, so that was no problem. Time pressure was always a thing, because we were always "behind", even if we started early. I have never been so happy as the day I cut the 'maggot tag" off my fatigues. Alright, I was happier the day my kids were born, but it is close.
My mother (and dad) were Marines and when I was about 7 years old, mom announced that my brother and I needed to benefit from her Corps training so she literally turned our home into Parris Island. I joined the Navy and thought bootcamp was a joke compared to an afternoon with "Sarge" (what my brother and I called mom behind her back). Showering with the whole company at the same time in an open room with shower heads was not the creepy part. No, it was learning the "heel to toe" that they barked out all the time. Tango dancers have more distance between them.
Great story there!! Really got a kick out of reading it. When my brother finished B.C. at Parris Island in the early 70's and he'd come home on leave, he had some hysterical stories. Pat was a very funny guy. He used to tell us all that when they had to use the head, they were only allowed one sheet of toilet paper for #1 and only two sheets of T.P. for #2. TWO SHEETS?? 😂😂😂. I was on the floor from laughing so hard and so were all of my cousins. That was 50 yrs ago. Pat & I were very close, always. He recently passed away. I loved him and miss him so much. He was my buddy. Sounds like you had great parents and a good childhood. Always be there for them. Thank you for service, my friend, and for protecting and defending this great country. Things have been so bad in our country for the past 7 months. We're all praying that things change SOON. God Bless you & your loved ones, always. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Having played high school sports and later serving in the military, I found it easier to shower with a group of men as oppose to one or two. The collective group keeps everybody and wandering eyes or behaviors that should take place in private from happening. Guys that get out of line will quickly find that that behavior is a no no! ❤️
@@SillyGayBoy - That’s the point, the goal is to discourage exhibiting those behaviors there. If the group caught somebody staring, they would be harassed so badly that it would probably be the last time they’d attempt to be there showering with the group. They should focus on doing their business and go, not using it as an opportunity to steal glances or more. If they’re just hanging out in a stink bathroom for hours as people come and go, people should look at them with suspicion and if need be react to them. That’s called social norms & etiquette!
O.K., I joined the Air Force in 1972. There was no internet then and I was really scared, didn't know what to expect. This guy is giving you a heads up of what's to come. Listen to him.
I went through USAF basic in 1973 & my experience was similar to yours. I was in WW2 era barracks so we did not have enough toilets, sinks or shower heads so naked men were crawling over each other in the morning. The funniest thing that I can remember is that the barracks ran out of toilet paper on the first or second day, but we were all too scared to ask for more toilet paper. A couple of days later, the Training Instructor chewed everyone out for not telling him that the barracks had run out of toilet paper. The guy standing next to me muttered to me that he was so relieved because he had been using his t-shirts for toilet paper and he was down to his last clean one. When we washed clothes, the t-shirts with "tobacco stains" were always his.
I only got about half way through this video. He's spot on in his descriptions. The military, when it comes to this kind of stuff, is just straight up BS. It has nothing to do with being battle ready. If you're in a battle situation the last thing you're going to do is shower and shave. With all the training and all the other methods they use to put these soldiers in 'battle condition', the least they can do is let these kids get a 3-4 minute shower and time to shave and brush their teeth. General hygiene is for physical health. As for the rest of it, get over it. We all got the same stuff and nobody cares.
It’s about learning to function in every capacity under stress and a sense of urgency. Nothing about boot camp is geared towards personal indulgence or comfort. A few weeks of this isn’t going to cause negative health outcomes in otherwise healthy adults.
My god, it's amazing that one of the biggest issues is being naked in front of other guys. I guess due to the elimination of so many phys ed programs in schools, most young guys nowadays have never seen another guy naked. Hence, this unnatural, almost neurotic modesty. When I went through bootcamp back in the late '70s, nobody even thought about it.
Back in those days gym was still mandatory and you were required to shower after class. If you had it first period you didn't even bother to get ready for school until after class. I agree, kids today are so coddled they are mystified by the human body instead of accepting of our sameness.
Some guys today think just because you look at another naked guy makes you gay. Wake up. Strange american culture. Where being naked with another guy has social mystic. In Asian, high school guys, 3 generations of male families go to the public baths to relax walking around naked and don't give it a 2nd thought. European guys of all shapes and sizes wear Speedos and that's part of the culture.
If you think young people now days aren't very familiar with the naked body of both semesters you are very mistaken. There's more sexual exploration than ever and it's much more acceptable. Guys sleeping with guys and girls sleeping with girls is quiet common place . You are only fooling yourself if you think otherwise.

I can tell you right now, the shitter/shower situation never bothered anyone I knew in boot camp… Because we had more important shit to worry about. And if you're going Marine Corps, MCT has rain rooms (I can't speak for ITB), so it's not until MOS school when you get some privacy.
I cant thank you enough for you deciding to serve. You are definitely a true patriot. I come from a Gold Star Family, going back to my great-uncle serving as a combat pilot. He flew missions in Italy against the Nazi's during WWII. Im very sorry you are being highly disrespected with the very inappropriate and even some very disgustingly perverted comments the guys are writing.
My bf flew out Jan-2021. With covid hes staying at the hotel at MCRD for 10 day quarantine. The info in this video I'll sure pass along to him. Especially the hygiene. Thanks so much for your videos. My brother is a marine and so was my late father.
Way different from 1983 when I was at MCRD San Diego. We just had 1hr DI (Drill Instructor) Time each night to ShitShowerShave, Polish Boots, Uniform Prep…etc. Sundays was wash day out on the concrete wash slabs. Great vids for those going into the Corps! Semper Fi!
This is totally accurate! When I was at Navy recruit training, if a shipmate needed to use the head after lights out, only 2 or 3 could be out of their rack at a time, so we'd have to whisper to the recruit on watch duty and make sure it was ok, and then take turns. My compartment had about 80 males, so this would continue long into the night; in the same way, the would be several waiting for a turn to iron uniforms. The poor guys who cleaned the head got smart after the first day and secured all of the sinks except 4 to make it quicker to clean. I shredded my face and neck shaving in a hurry and the RDCs would get in your face to inspect and make sure you didn't miss anything. Good video! Thanks for posting this. I wish I knew this stuff ahead of time because I was very nervous about group hygiene and privacy. The main concern becomes finishing before they start screaming at you to get out of the head while you have a mouth full of tooth paste. Ah good times
You mean start off with a 30 second countdown then just to the last 5 seconds one quarter through the countdown. Getting you prepared for the unexpected I suppose. If they say they're giving you 30 seconds, prepare for 15 sec.
Simeon, I had to view your video again, loved the way you describe the shower experience in Boot camp. It's has not changed from when I was in P.I. S.C. 1978. Great and excellent job, sharing your experience. Semper-Fi. Oorah.
Thank You for being part of our armed forces - our country would never be safe without you! I totally support funding of our service men and women during your service to our country and afterwards ....
My basic training at Leonardwood, we had showers w/ curtains and actual stalls. AIT at Lee we were in the old barracks and we had no stalls and 1 big shower room. Now at Irwin, it was a surprise all the toilets were close enough for guys to place cardboard on their knees and play cards and the showers were wide open w/o walls .
The reason they asked for this video is cause everyone that asked is afraid someone going to peter gaze them. Lol just be happy with what you got fools😂
Luke Dragon Just went to MEPS the 30th and the 1st. It was really a long day but you will feel satisfaction in the end when you swear in and take the oath. Remember to be very focus and use “Yes, sir/No, Sit etc” at all times. And finally dress appropriately. Remember, its like job interview (with steroids). Good Luck Bro!
I enlisted back in 1981 & the time we had for personal hygiene was extremely fast. I didn't have time to think about how I felt, Drill Instructors were always present & yelling at us to be done, get out of the shower. Reflecting back on that experience; enlisted as a cook, travelled 9 months out of my 3 years hitch. Put on muscle weight, cuz everyday in bootcamp we excercised. Got a buzz first couple days in camp. If you're in love with your locks, forget them NOW! This experience goes by like a vapor, so do it, great experience for me...after 20 years, you get a military pension.
When I was in Boot Camp, we had urinal troughs to the port side and 30 flush toilets on the starboard side in a Quonset hut at the end of our road. The Quonset hut next to it was the shower room. None of us had a hard time during our S S&S. Our senior drill instructor told us from day 1 that we needed to drink a LOT of water to get our body's used to the environment. If we didn't drink a lot of water we would get constipated. That was what he said could become a problem. We carried out towel, bar soap, razor and shaving cream the the head wearing only are USMC shorts and flip flops. Each platoon of 60 recruits would sleep in a Quonset hut with double high racks on each side. The only hard part for me was the heat of the summer in that Quonset hut. It sounds like things have changed for the better. You guys have air conditioning!
When I look back to basic training we really were gross! I can’t even imagine only having 3 minutes to get clean after doing a 4 mile run now! The only time I can remember actually having a good shower is after we came from the field. Good Ole Army Days!
I gotta respect this guy...as pretty as he is, he could have been a model or taken the easy road sliding by on his looks, but he didn't. He picked something that would build character.
Why are guys today so freaked out about being naked in front of other guys in a locker/shower environment? Seems too many young men are paranoid about other guys seeing their junk. What’s up with that?
When I was in the MARINES We had about 35 seconds to shower. One guy got the bright idea to skip the Shower and just change from PT gear to uniform. The DI caught him and for the rest of boot camp he was named Stinky Ass Smith. The DIs never got tired of calling him that
@@TASconfidential he was a great shot with the M-16. He shot like 49/50 bullseyes. The senior DI was a black guy from TX. He said about his shooting score. “He fittin to get a big head.” It was so funny in real life. Can’t duplicate it here.
@@PInk77W1 no time for what ? He mentioned he had to stare at that wall after shower and until you instructed to move , I was wondering why and if you are naked while staring at the wall
Andrew Puccinelli nah I didn’t want to quit. Would’ve looked bad to my family and overall would’ve made all of what I’d done a complete waste of time. Some guys that quit bootcamp contacted some of my buddies and told them they wish they never quit and that it was a big mistake
Yeah I kept telling myself it's only a few months out of a 4-year commitment and it's the only way to get the title of marine. They definitely were a lot of times I send myself what the hell have I got myself into lol
Actually, that's natural. Throughout history women were merely among the many spoils of battle. But they never socialized together. For the most part, that's still true today.
i dont know why im watching this im in the army and already done with boot camp informative video though lol we had cold showers all 10 weeks of ours hahaha luvely us army
Don’t be surprised when people hate on you for being so good looking. They hate you because they are jealous. Just ignore them and move on... you will find other good looking people easy companions because they will understand.
I got my lip sliced open the day after black Friday when another recruit bumped my arm with his elbow. Could not save that spot for a week or so. Congrats on your promotion.
Their isn’t any and it all is based on wether or not the drill instructors like you. I was a squad leader and honestly the only thing it got me was less chow time and more pressure when it came to drill
At Basic Training, drill sergeants were not allowed inside the barracks' restrooms. And what;s the big deal? You go in use the toilet, shave, shower, whatever. Just pretty normal in the Army!
I went thru MCRD San Diego in 1966 Quonset huts...the head was in a separate Quonset hut and you were not allowed to hit the head after lights out until reveille...and then not until ordered to do so...if I recall if anyone tried to do that it was the fire watch’s responsibility to stop you or notify the drill instructor who had the duty...the showering etc wasn’t a big deal as most of us had played sports in school since 6th grade...the funniest thing (now) might have been Morning chow that first day...stood at attention at the tables...”ready seats...get up” played that game for maybe 5-10 minutes...then “get the fuck out of my chow hall!”...we didn’t get one bite of food...😂
Yeap, this was about the same for me in 1981 when I was in Army Boot Camp, a lot of yelling, your under what they called at the time TOTAL CONTROL 24/7 for about the first half of bc, then things starting smoothing out and get a bit more relaxed over the rest of the time. How I dealt with it all is I did a lot of internal laughing, sometimes my laugh would come out because I found so many things funny and I would get yelled at by some Drill Sargent, but your right, I was a bit nervous when I first started but all the nakedness' in a room with only guys, you don't care and you never even really notice. A few times I would get up to use the bathroom and when I got back to the room of bunks a ought a few of the guys masturbating in there bunks and sometimes in the bathroom witch was always a bit awkward but I guess they could not resist apparently. As for PT, I worked out quite a bit before I actually enlisted knowing that It would be helpful when I got their so that worked out well as some guys had a really hard time, a few even passed out during different runs, some of our jogs would go up to about 17 miles as we got farther along into Basic Training and I actually loved that but some guys because they were in bad shape had a hard time. My favorite part of it all about the military is the comraderies that build's up over time. l met lots of really great people that you become life long friends with. over all, it's certainly not for everyone and you have to have a good mindset going into it, but I think it's a great environment for many reasons
I really think it’s the society we currently live in here in the US that makes it so weird. For thousands of years, it’s was nothing for men to just be men around each other and in most of history in those societies, men and women were separated most of the day so what was normal and natural never became an issue! I remember the first day of seventh grade (1980), we had to dress out before PE and if you had PE for the 1st, 2nd or 3rd period, you had to shower afterwards or be picked on for smelling like sweat the rest of the day! I of course played sports prior to then and being the youngest of three brothers and thanks to early development and being a black guy (the only black kid in my whole Jr. High school in 1980’s Washington St.), I didn’t care who saw me naked. My cousin was the same age with one older brother attending an all male boarding school in the 1980’s in the UK and he said things were similar in circumstances. Times sure have changed!
All evidence to the contrary: millions have and so would you. And if you were having trouble, you’d have plenty of encouragement from a man very close to your ear...
When I was in the Army in the early '60's, not only were there no doors on the toilets, there were no walls. And there were only five crappers for about 60 guys. This was in Permanent Duty station, not basic training.
Shea Wagner haha id always shave on my own time because of that 😂 the first week after Black Friday when you meet your drill instructor everyone was accidentally cutting themselves while shaving haha

shy bladder is unfortunately one of my irrational fears. alot of men probably dont even know this is actually a thing. ik its all in my head. but its so fucking humiliating that its even gotten a little bit in the way of achieving my dream job in the military! its such a shitty feeling and i hope no one else as to experience it. im to much of a pussy to tell anyone in person
Ten percent of men are “pee shy.” This is a problem for the military. The psychiatrist will classify that under social anxiety or social phobia. Most men will over come the problem in boot camp but some will need behavioral therapy and some will not overcome the problem.
In USAF basic, we had seconds, as he says here, to "run" through the open shower bay & almost fight over the lack of shower heads. We had so little time to get thru the head, dressed & in formation. You learn to sacrifice and make it work as best as possible. Later on b4 lights out we got time for a real real shower/shave! Yrs later I was hired as a civ cop, but trained at the residential Illinois State Police Academy by the troopers in their military combat fatigues with cuffs, sidearm etc. They said the MARINES recently came in to train instructors how to be like DIs & train us as Marines train recruits, so I'm familiar with much of this. My radio & ammunition travel much faster than any human in a running posture, so I dunno why the hell Sgt. Outlaw insisted taking us on 7 mile runs. We weren't going to Bagdad...they need to focus more on how to handle each type of police call! We did plenty officer survival, wrestling, boxing, arrest tactics etc. The trained both State Trooper Cadets & City Police Recruits.
Just ran across this and it reminded me of my Air Force Basic days many many years ago. Things don't change a lot but it might be useful to someone if I put my experiences here. The worst day for me actually was uniform issue. That day I was in a crowded room, naked shoulder to shoulder with about 120 other guys, and that was the one time I really felt "meat racked", treated as a commodity. But it was really like fifteen minutes and then you had clothes on. Long hours to get everything though. In AF Basic things were similar at least the first couple of weeks. They do rush you in and out for a lot of reasons, one being you are still used to do things in civvie time and civvie manner so rushing you through the showers and sinks gets you used to being given orders and moving at speed. But after the first few weeks it gets easy anyway. In the AF we had about an hour every evening of "free time" except it wasn't free. You could use this time to write home, but you also needed to study (if you did need to) and to get your kit in order, shine shoes, fold clothes precisely, all that good stuff. Oh some guys had to shave two or three times a day because of fast beard growth, the TI's would be on them. There was an announcement that the showers were open and that was good for about twenty minutes though you didn't really get to hog a shower head for a long time, but you could take a decent shower if that was a priority. But after twenty minutes they went off limits because each of us had some detail we did in the barracks and mine was to clean the showers (with two other guys) spotless, hairless, gleaming, dry. So you had to do without if you missed shower call. And same for the sinks, they had to be scrubbed and cleaned too before lights out. In the mornings there was about fifteen minutes from reveille to falling out in formation. I think the showers were open then too but it would be a fast one. You could hit the latrine at various points in the day but you had a very short time for it and you had to wash hands and yet leave the sink spotless. Really it wasn't hard to do after a few days. In the AF we had stalls with doors. My brother told me in the army they had no stalls, no partitions and they would just grin and bear it so to speak. That was a long long time ago I'm sure that's changed. Oh I got constipated the first week or so, and they told us it happens to tons of guys. Your body has to adjust to a lot of stuff really fast and this is one place where it sometime can't quite keep up and you don't get a leisurely time sitting on the toilet so... when we went to the BX for our toiletries and such we were told to buy some laxatives. It did get the job done. The fact is you get used to living with 60 or more guys and you have a lot of things to think about and lot to worry about so while this may seem daunting it won't really be.
USAF - We piled into the shower and around the sinks - during the week, nobody hogged anything, 2-3 guys per shower head, 3-4 guys per sink, everyone got a little more time because the whole flight had to be done quickly to leave time for cleaning. Weekends, you could have your own sink, own shower head, but still it was pretty quick. Most, if not all of us, were used to quick showers after gym class so that wasn't as unusual as sharing sinks. I can't even remember if the toilets had doors - if they did, I don't think anyone used them because that took time.
Oh, I get that. It's just that some of us are better distributed than others. I usually just turn my back but, that present another set of problems and discussion.😊
I think most guys do pretty quickly. But until you've showered with a group -- there is bound to be some apprehension. Once you've done it though, it's one less fear you'll have.
I know this video and a lot of these comments are old but in response to the people being confused or shit talking the guys that are concerned with the showering part of Bootcamp I believe the actual issue with showering with other guys isn't so much the act of showering with other guys it's the idea of EVERYBODY in the modern day dick size shaming. Thinking outside the box here, guys don't really have an issue with being naked in front of other guys or smelling around other guys because we all smell after working out and what not everybody has body odor. BUT I believe guys are nervous about the showers because in the military, all branches, us as men tend to talk a lot of shit to each other and keep each other in check which from the outside can be seen as "picking on each other" but its just how we interact with each other. And i believe this may be the concern with showering with other guys is other guys bringing up later dick sizes because as we all know as men that's one of the most judged areas from both other guys and females and rumors can spread quickly. I may be wrong but just thinking outside the box like i said.
it seems like such a big issue till you get there, then showers become a brief reprieve from your DI/ RDC/ or whatever your instructors titles are. Shower time is 5 minutes of rushed bliss and you will quickly enjoy that time. Thanks for the video big dog, I'm using it in my research paper for College. - Corpsman Prow here
One of the reasons that people are nervous about nudity is that in the 1970s physical education was mandatory for middle school and high school in almost every school in the nation. Currently, half of students and 70% of high school students have no mandatory physical education, so they're not accustomed to locker rooms and nudity.

Ha, ha.
First time I had to do shower room with other guys I was 17. Quickly felt no anxiety about it at all.
Well, you're all in the same situation -- and that actually helps.
Same. We had 55 guys and 3 showerheads in a big room. We took turns nobody cared.
Its not about being battle ready
I am a high school teacher and students still take several semesters of physical education.
Sadly boys are being raised like girls now.
If you think young people now days aren't very familiar with the naked body of both semesters you are very mistaken. There's more sexual exploration than ever and it's much more acceptable. Guys sleeping with guys and girls sleeping with girls is quiet common place . You are only fooling yourself if you think otherwise.
21 Years in Uniform Field Artillery cannoneer, deployed to Okinawa Japan and Korean D.M.Z. it was fun but hard work. bootcamp was like summer camp it didn't bother me at all it was just fun and summer campy. marching, shooting rifles, working out... learning subject matter of the Marine corps organization. it was an amazing time and I miss it. the entire Marine experience was excellent but it had it's downsides as well.

I dont complain it was a good career but never got combat action ribbon, but I always maintained my 1st class PFT/ CFT and rifle expert and pistol expert and I was good at Artillery got a N.A.M. and good conducts multiple times etc.. cert coms. blah blha blah. noting to proove to anyone. but yeah I did get shafted more than once. but hey welcome to the green weenie it gets you sometimes.
Thank you for your service guy, give it your all, learn from everything. Big props to your family. Thank you too.
I remember the drill instructors would sometimes skip numbers during countdowns during a shower lol. After awhile you get accustomed to the chaos.
You mean start off with a 30 second countdown then just to the last 5 seconds one quarter through the countdown. Getting you prepared for the unexpected I suppose. If they say they're giving you 30 seconds, prepare for 15 sec.
Such an overlooked but very important question. Thank you for making this video!!!

Being pretty isn’t everything kids! Dude, stay in the marines or whatever...
Well, the military can't wait till you're in combat for you to get over being pee- or poop-shy.
What! No pictures?
I can't even remember if the toilets had doors - if they did, I don't think anyone used them because that took time.
congrats on getting lance!!
Kat x thank u! ✊🏻
I don't understand why so many men are afraid of their bodies being seen by other men. We all have the same equipment.
Oh, I get that. It's just that some of us are better distributed than others. I usually just turn my back but, that present another set of problems and discussion.😊
It is ridiculous for guys to worry about being naked around other guys. Get over it!
I think most guys do pretty quickly. But until you've showered with a group -- there is bound to be some apprehension. Once you've done it though, it's one less fear you'll have.
Get over it? My god you’re insensitive.
@@Ky-lj9vu you sound like a woman instead of a man. That's the problem. Boys are being raised as girls!
@@meehd01you sound like a whiny bitch
Damn, he's kind of gorgeous!!!
Kind of?😳
Really?🙄
Are you human?😎
it seems like such a big issue till you get there, then showers become a brief reprieve from your DI/ RDC/ or whatever your instructors titles are. Shower time is 5 minutes of rushed bliss and you will quickly enjoy that time. Thanks for the video big dog, I'm using it in my research paper for College.
- Corpsman Prow here
maybe its more like 1 or 2 minutes lol
Mesmerizing eyes!
One of the reasons that people are nervous about nudity is that in the 1970s physical education was mandatory for middle school and high school in almost every school in the nation. Currently, half of students and 70% of high school students have no mandatory physical education, so they're not accustomed to locker rooms and nudity.
Kind of hard to tell, but was this video taken in Pensacola? I think I recognize the room.
I hate Liberty Mutual commercials. You are a great guy.
