How Microsoft and Apple Became Rivals

- In order to understand how the relationship between Apple and Microsoft developed, we have to travel back to 1976, the year Apple was founded. The Apple I was released in early April of that year and Steve Wozniak built it around the idea that it would run a custom version of Microsoft’s BASIC operating system. When the Apple I system was phased out in September of that year and development on the Apple II began, Microsoft caught wind of it and asked Apple if they wanted to license a more full featured version of BASIC. Steve Jobs declined, as they were happy with their version of the operating system Wozniak wrote. But when they showed off the Apple II at the West Coast Computer Faire in April 1977, they were overwhelmed with complaints since their operating system didn’t have floating-point, which basically means the machine didn’t understand numbers below −32,768 or any numbers above 32,767. As trivial as this might sound for consumer-level apps, it became a big problem as businesses began using computers for accounting and couldn’t use the machines to process any sizable numbers. After Apple heard all these complaints, they ultimately licensed Microsoft’s BASIC software for a flat rate of $31,000, or around $130,000 in today’s money. This license, which ultimately created an operating system called AppleSoft BASIC, actually saved Microsoft from near bankruptcy. Microsoft had previously licensed BASIC to Commodore for their PET system and ended up loosing a ton of money on the agreement. But the Apple II was a run away hit, with over six million units sold over its 16 year run on the market.

I see the rivalry being more like a sibling rivalry rather than enmity. Yeah they compete but they will back the other up when needed and neither wants to see the other fail.
microsoft doesn't want Apple to fail because that mean's they'd have a monopoly over the OS market, then the company would be split up
it would have been true 20 years ago when the US government was after microsoft for antitrust violations. but since the bush years the likelihood of that happening has plummeted.
They were butt buddies, basically. Those relationships can get messy (poop), but are typically strong.
i would hate to see a market without either of these two. People usually hate Microsoft but I actually love it, basically, they are bros in arms.
@@lotsodhliwayo why do people hate microsoft? because of Steve Ballmer?
So Basically Apple and Microsoft Basically Helped each other from bankrupcy sounds like a friendship to me.
There are some theories show that it was nothing personal, but a business move. Microsoft was under multiple antirust or monopoly lawsuit during that time. So investing in Apple would cover up some of their dirt
they are frendly rival but they are not in war. think bills gate still own couple share of apple
Companies like duopolies
Well, Microsoft saved Apple for ultimately their own benefit. It wasn't personal, it was to take off some of the pressure on the anti-trust suit.
Love and hate
Floating point is mainly used to store decimals. Not having floating point means the computer can only work with integers, which makes developing financial software hard since money uses decimals.
thanks I'm here to make sure someone (floating) pointed that out
You can still simulate floating point numbers with integers even they are not built into the hardware
@@camwhite1697 no you can't
@@AdityaSingh-007 It's possible actually, Store number in 2 bytes instead of 1. 1st byte with contain number before decimal point, If 1st digit of 2nd byte is 1 instead of 0, Computer will treat it as number after decimal point instead of sign of integer.
It's my method, how I'd do. There can be even better methods to do that.
Doesn't floating point mainly store binary, not decimal?
When you realize that Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were both friends and colleagues.

As a Microsoft and Apple user, I love both companies in there own way, and I don’t think their enemies, it’s more like sibling rivalry, they don’t want neither to fail, and do look out for eachother, but they do fight alot
I do think the same as I use Windows and Apple devices
Microsoft now is like "Yeah we're already successful, why bother in keep working?" The only good thing Microsoft has done since Windows 10 is adding a basic feature to Windows 11 almost a year later and making WinRAR available natively.
@SuperNostalgia. I am not religous.
I code and am a fanboy for both. Platform agnosticism is the way to be.
This makes me think of Charles Xavier & Magneto.
Mike Appleseed ironically, magneto played Steve jobs 😂
Mike Appleseed are you alive
What about the rivalry between Apple and Google? There's actually real animosity there.
"animosity" is stretching it. They're competitors but it's not as deep seeded as you think.
No, only between fanboys and haters.
Actually one of Google founders used to visit Steve Jobs regularly and ask him for advice and Steve would help him even after the problem with Android.
What about apple with Samsung ._.
@@augustogalindo8687 interesting also to note that Google search was made popular by Apple, because they were one of the first to include it in their browser...
The fact that the Apple II couldn't handle floating point actually meant that it couldn't handle (natively, at least) decimal numbers, which is a more serious problem for financial software.
The range you gave means that the Apple II stored it's numbers on two bytes or 16 bits, which was respectable for the time (I think this may be an error, because the original Apple II used an 8-bit processor).
This rivalry was up there with:
Nintendo Vs. Sega
Sony Vs. Phillips
Such a great rivalry.
@Windows Explorer // Exploring Windows yeah. maybe SOME part in video games but nowhere else
And capitalism vs communism.😂
Nintendo vs Sega
What about Plants Vs. Zombies?
technically it is nintendo vs PS and Microsoft
I have 8 Apple devices at home and been using Apple for years, wouldn't dream of switching to something else for personal use. However, professionally, I can't dream of leaving the .NET platform. The two companies have their own position in the market, with two different audiences, different intents and different cultures. I appreciate and respect both companies.
Apple by far has the most interesting and intense history in technology.

O no julio
I actually think that Google and Apple are bigger rivals, at least in the current day
Nope. Google and Amazon are the biggest rivals
w a l m a r t v s t a r g e t
Kevin, Blood is talking about Apple rivals, not generic tech rivals.
Actually Google and Microsoft have a bigger rivalry. Consider this: there are google apps on iOS but Google decided not to bring them to Windows Phone, and Office works better on iOS.
In 2023, it's more of Google and Microsoft
Greg, I appreciate the work you put into these videos and watch them all, but if you're going to put them out this frequently you should really do more research because there are always some.
1. BASIC isn't an operating system, it's a programming language.
2. Minor detail, but Windows 1.0 wasn't really an operating system either.
3. Sculley wasnt a board member before he was CEO, and he didn't replace Jobs, Jobs hired him to be CEO. Jobs wasn't CEO until he returned to Apple in the 90s.
2. Was it an interface which ran on Unix/DOS?
@@prateekpanwar646 Yeah, Windows 1.0 was a “Graphical Operating Environment” which ran on top of DOS. Every consumer version of Windows until XP was technically running on top of DOS, with the first professional version of Windows as its own OS appearing as NT in 1993. But for all intents and purposes, the consumer version of Windows that most will consider its own OS (even though it technically wasn’t) was Windows 95.
no. he meant BASIC to imply it was most likely written in BASIC.
@@prateekpanwar646 It ran on top of the terminal. its pretty much A GUI implementation of the terminal
@@prateekpanwar646 today however. it runs more of a program that works with your computer.
This is the kind of history I want to learn.
Don’t learn it from this. Almost every single minor detail in the video is incorrect.
It's incredible to me how close the oldest Mac os is to modern day (look and feel wise). what a great job
history of apple logic, gargeband or imovie
I remember the famous “Chemistry Project” that debuted shortly after Microsoft bailed Apple out of certain bankruptcy. Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office were released with Mac-specific features, iTunes and Safari were released for Windows, and BootCamp let Macs boot into Windows without voiding a warranty. Obviously this project petered out pretty quickly; Apple started releasing its lovable-if douchebaggy-Mac vs. PC ads, both IE and Safari started to lose market share due to free and more impressive competitors, and both companies started reading each other's mail.
On that note, it wasn't just Microsoft who copied Apple, as the video suggests. Microsoft brought in Media Center PCs years before Apple TV; they had Tablet PCs half a decade before the iPad; Windows let users snap windows side-by-side before iPadOS or OS X … the list goes on. It definitely went both ways, and still does.
at 0:45, there is no OS called Microsoft BASIC, its a programming language
Abin Andrews DOS right that’s the original computer 💻 language.
BRILLIANT VIDEO thank you so much for all the history and facts 🍎🍏

Speaking of brand rivalries, in the early years of the iTunes Store, Apple did a cross-promotion with Pepsi. If Zune had done one with Coke (I don’t recall one), that really would have been something.
Road to 100K!!!
they’re competitive rather than enemies i’d say
Bill and Steve were both best friends at one point too
Windows has been in my childhood... my Dad used to have XP so long ago...I miss those days...AHHH WHY CANT I GO BACK IN TIME....!!! Anyway... there was the cat assistant in Word I copied (I was a little kid!) And then one day...the cat assistant was gone, and so was the pretty Windows XP. I like Windows 7 the best and a laptop in the house still has it. I will make sure it always runs it! When I get my own computer at last im gonna try to have Windows 7 and the older version of Word at the same time if it is possible, which it just has to be somehow! Surely there is a way to DOWNgrade things! Then I could mess around with my long lost friend, that cat, again, while being on my favorite Windows version. Windows XP is my second favorite! And then my Grandpa has an even older version of Windows than Windows XP...its so cool! I never had used the operating system on apple computers before, and it doesn't look as iconic as Windows does, or maybe that is since, once again, I had never used that operating system....but it was interesting watching this video on how Microsoft ended up being rivals with Apple!
Vista?
When I watch a gaming video with 60fps: "Too much buffering!"
When I watch Apple Explained video with 60fps: "No buffering today!"
BASIC is a programming language, the OS shell produced by Microsoft at the time was called DOS. They also made software compatible with OS/2 and CP/M.
when you are on top everyone is start making comparing... apple deserve to be no.1 through invention innovation and vision
As a music player alone, the Zune was leaps and bounds ahead of any iPod, but as usual with Microsoft, it was too little too late.
Especially the Zune mini and the HD, they were beautiful and unique, but Microsoft just seems incapable of proper marketing.

What? That's not what floating point means. Floating point is support for representation of decimal numbers. It has nothing to do with word size.
Modern Windows is not based off of Windows 1.0 it is based off of OS/2
2:45
1:09 Business accounting software never uses floating point arithmetic. It can't handle big numbers, due to rounding errors. We always use integer math.
the the moment his video came out, I said:"bingo, the video I voted for came out
Failed at Zune and Windows Phone and Windows 8. And I've replaced Office with Google Docs.
But the Surface line is what won me back to Microsoft again. =)
I ship them
Interesting
Oh god, Can you imagine the heated discussions that would happen if Microsoft also didn't license windows. There would either be so many different operating systems to argue over or the Apple vs Microsoft would be insanely escalated aha.
zune looks like newer versions of windows. You can see internet icon and battery.
Anyone remember the Mac vs. PC ads from the 2000's?
Edit: Floating point is a decimal number
5:43 I can’t tell who’s suing who at this point
Bill: "Hey Jobs, I made some new friends. They're pretty cool"

Bill: "Break up. We're aren't lovers"
Jobs: "I said, BREAK UP!"
Bill: "Fine, NEVER SHOW YOUR FACE AGAIN!"

The End same here
I love a good pc where I can’t right click 😂😂
That's legit illegal coz colluding to create a monopoly is illegal
@@bornorca5133 You can right click on an Apple computer with a magic mouse. In the system settings on Mac, there are mouse settings. When you pair an Administrator Magic Mouse, you get more settings. In those settings, you get options to add right click, scroll(either way), scroll left and right, double tap, double tap + scroll, triple tap, Triple tap + scroll, all doing different things. For example, a certain scroll on my Mac switches the window I am on to the next.
There's a lot of custom things you can do with it if you know how to code, too.
This works because the mouse isn't button operated, its more a touchpad that moves, on steroids.
Part of the payoff was that Apple had to run Internet explorer for several years.
and I REMOVED that junk
Where did you this information for this video?
Made Up. Everything is Made Up. This is Made Up. Who is "Made Up"?
Someone from UK may be able to confirm this but I don't think the zune was ever released in UK..

a good film to watch about this is "Pirates of Silicone Valley"
Leah-Marie Lafond-Hindson doesn’t Ashton Kutcher look exactly like Steve Jobs as a teen. Sometimes I think there was no photos of Steve in the early years so Ashton Kutcher real photos were used 😆 lol

WHAT? 16 Colors???!!!?! That's amazing. :T oh my tech evolution is so interesting.

If Apple and Microsoft work together it will be called APPSOFT
Wt heck how did this get only just 400 likes and it was posted yesterday WTF
This is interesting cause a lot of bitter rivalries are a thing in the tech industries but Apple-Microsoft isn’t a hostile one. Yes they will compete over market share like companies should but neither side actively tries to attack or aggregate the other for the sake of attacking. They keep to themselves and respect each other for the most part without any unnecessary public fiasco or lawsuits. (Unlike some, ahem, Facebook, ahem, Samsung)
So if Apple made a house, will it have windows. hmmm
There's a bunch of errors in the video

History of Apple Explained
I buy the microsoft surface go 2 and at that time i never buy any product from apple and i was really happy with my new tablet because it was so expensive it cost me 600 (with the keyboard) and then i buy my first iphone and at that time i see that apple products are so expensive because they have good quality and i was really sad because my surface tablet start lagging so much and then i knew that with the money i spend on that tablet i could buy a apple ipad air 😞 but well i cant do anything i ready buy it
Mac os and ios vs windows and windows mobile
