Samara has the ability to implant images into someone's mind, ones which are implied by others to have not been good. This led to her parents keeping her in the barn. However, Samara began burning images into the horses' minds as well, causing them to throw themselves into the water. It's also where the picture of the tree on her bedroom wall in the barn came from, Samara burned that image into the wood.
When the cabin was built above the well, Samara's spirit was able to imprint images onto the video tape. The video plays like flashes of her life, perhaps her last thoughts as she died.
The faces of those who watch the tape being blurred in photos seem to represent how someone would look if being viewed from under water. The scratched out faces in the magazines look like Samara with her long hair covering her face. She then leaves her victims with horrified expressions, their skin looking like someone who was decomposed in water.

Nice post. I would also like to add that something that Ash and Hannah didn't seem to understand: Samara is intrinsically evil. Probably because of some unnatural/supernatural technique used to allow her mother to carry a child to birth. She feels guilt over what she does but she can't stop herself from transmitting messed up images to those around her anymore than one can stop themselves from breathing.

Yeah, basically came in here to post this. Good breakdown. I'd like to add that I had read somewhere that upon viewing the tape Samara gives you 7 days before you die because that's how long it took her to die after being thrown in the well.
Oh and yeah, by virtue of her existence and her ability to mentally torture people with images, I agree that Samara is inherently evil. I am not sure what control she has/had over these abilities, but she expresses no intention to stop using them to drive people mad and kill them in the end.

Here's some answers for some of your questions at the end.
It's implied that Samara had psychic powers and was already evil before she died, using her powers to cause suffering around her. This is made more clear in the original Japanese movie, but I like the subtlety of this version. Also, the scratch marks in the well were her trying to get out of the well, not her being actively tortured. The way the curse works is that you have to make a copy _and_ show it to someone else to survive. The idea behind the twist at the end was that Samara's desire to be released from the well was actually unrelated to the curse itself. It's unclear what being set free actually did for Samara, but she was basically tricking them into helping her out.
The movie isn't really supposed to be confusing or unclear, but it's written like a murder mystery, so I can see why that might happen anyway.

@@Catherine.Dorian. This might be blasphemous, as I’m a huge J-horror fan, but I’ve seen every version of the Ring (the original Japanese, the Korean, one, the made for tv version, and all the sequels) and not only is the English version the best, but it’s not even close.
Every other example of a J-horror movie getting an English remake (including the Grudge, like you said) has produced an inferior version and J-horror in general is of higher quality than the average western horror movie, but the Ring is an exception to that rule. It really is a quite miraculous movie.

I’ve seen the Japanese one and was bored out of my mind to the point that I almost fell asleep or some scenes made me laugh my ass off, but wasn’t creeped out at all. The American version however is one of my favorite horror movies and I watch it every year (usually when it rains). You guys actually asked the right questions and really got most of it right. Samara was a “gifted” child…but in a way that affected everything around her negatively. So yes,she was no ordinary child.
The mother didn’t torture her. She was taken to see the doctor who I think was a psychiatrist, so the parents did their best to try to help her. But instead everything around her died or went crazy.
The scratches on the walls of the well were Samara trying to get out of the well after the mother shoved her in it.
Rachel managed to stave off the curse when she copied the tape and showed it to her ex boyfriend/ dude. That’s how the tape works. You pass it on to other people to get them to watch (remember the tape was in the office of the cabin to watch for free = for anybody to watch, thus extending the life of the person that copied that tape). This is shown when Rachel made the kid make a copy. Rachel figured this out when most people didn’t. They all died, the viewers of the tape. And she saved the son. Messed up that this kid would have this on his poor conscience for however long he lives.
I agree, Rachel sucked as a mother. She loved him but still. She sucked as a human being in all honesty.
Loved the reaction…you guys are cute! 👍🏻👍🏻✌🏼✌🏼

She showed the mom and dad scary shit all the time , and drove the mom nuts, So they put her in the barn hoping that there was a distance limitation on her ability. So she showed the horses scary shit and they all offed themselves.
The image ability is also how Samara made the pictures in the sanitarium , and how she made the tape. She projected her memories straight onto the tape.

I love this movie! Definitely check out the original. It's great!
Samara made her adopted mother, Anna Morgan, go insane by showing her horrible images in Anna's head. Remember the scene when Noah goes to the psychiatric hospital and he sees the x-rays of weird and morbid images? Samara made those with her mind. Anna went to get psychiatric help for herself and Samara, but Samara didn't stop torturing Anna with her powers; in Samara's own words, "(hurting people) But I do and I'm sorry. It won't stop." Samara was put in the barn by her adopted father, Richard, to help his wife, so then Samara started to torture the horses by putting images in their minds, hence the horses drowning themselves. Because Samara didn't stop putting images in Anna's head, driving her insane, Anna killed Samara.
The tape was created by Samara using her powers. She burned them into the tape. The images are what she's seen and experienced, there's even a moment on the tape when we see Samara's point of view when the black trash bag is over her head. There are a lot of great details in the video tape. She made it because she wanted to hurt and kill people. I love how in order to safe yourself, you have to make a copy and pass it on to someone else, "spread it like sickness". This is such a clever concept/ ending by the author of the book, Koji Suzuki. You are saving yourself, by harming others. It's a full circle of harm and death. I know people die from their heart stopping, I think they die from fright. I know I would.
The original version is Japanese, and Japanese history and culture is embedded with mysticism and the supernatural, so the whole Samara/ Sadako, her powers, etc. goes a little more smoothly in the original version.
A lot of people wonder why after watching the tape, your image is messed up. I think it's because when you are under water and you look up, everything is refracted, some your view is distorted. It's a nice touch from the original film maker, Hideo Nakata; I don't know if that was specified in the book. The Ring movies are quite different from the original source material written by Koji Suzuki.

@@bbudimanalqodri Yeah, there are changes in the story. Rachel/Reiko Asakawa's ex-husband Ryūji Takayama was a psychic and a professor, so their son is psychic, which is why he knows things. The biggest difference is Samara/ Sadako's origin and backstory. The video tape is different, but eerie none the less. I honestly think the ending with Sadako/Samara coming out of the well is way scarier in the original. Also, instead of people receiving a phone call of Sadako saying, "Seven days", it's the same screeching sound you hear in the video. That to me was way more terrifying.

Loved this movie, but I love the original "Ringu" even more. There's this quasi-film school feel to the original movie that makes it even creepier, like it's just a tad closer to being a homemade movie which lends well to the aesthetic and atmosphere of the experience. Plus if you know a bit about Japanese ghost stories, you can really feel the movie's cultural roots and it really enriches the film significantly.

My understandings (Ignoring any lores added in subsequent movies 'cause they just made things unnecessarily convoluted):
Imagine if Jack Jack didn't live with the Incredibles, but was instead adopted by an ordinary family. The baby's probably not gonna live. Samara is such a child with superpowers who got adopted overseas. Her telepathic powers had manifested but she was still too young to control them, especially when she's asleep, hence people around her were getting nightmares. This caused her father to lock her away in the barn, but the horses were noisy and kept her awake at night, so she (probably intentionally) used her powers to drive the horses away. She overdid it, of course, and the horses all wanted to get as far away as they could. Because they were on an island, the horses had nowhere to run except into water. This destroyed her family's horse farm business, and Samara's mother was heartbroken as a horse racer. The non-super parents couldn't handle it anymore and killed Samara.
But Samara's powers included persisting after death, so she materialized her memories & experiences into a tape that's right next to the well (this ability was demonstrated earlier when she materialized x-ray images for the psychiatrist). She didn't care about being freed - She just wanted people to hear her story. Her technique was that if you watched the video and didn't like and share, she'd kill you. She has cyberkinetic powers that let her manipulate electronic equipments, hence her ability to turn on / teleport via TV, or giving phone calls to warn her viewers that they should share her video (except as a child, she only gave the cryptic instruction of "seven days").
It's like a marvel superhero's origin story as an orphaned child getting into trouble due to their uncontrolled powers, except in this case, Samara never grew up to become a superhero.

The tape was created because the TV was sitting on top of Samara's grave, the well. It was how Samara projected and shared her thoughts. Anna wasn't supposed to have a child, but the Morgans mysteriously returned to the island with a daughter. Something was wrong about Samara, as the doctor says the island suffered because of her presence and was better off after she was gone. Samara could directly implant images and thoughts into peoples' minds. She drove her mother crazy, so they put her in the barn to keep distance. Because she was in the barn, she drove the horses crazy and they killed themselves. It doesn't stop. Rachel survived because she passed it along.

The first time they ask "You don't want to hurt anyone" and she answers "But I do and I'm sorry" and the inflection and tone imply she means she keeps hurting people without meaning to and doesn't know how to stop it. The second time, it's completely different. She DOES in fact want to hurt people and you can't stop her, suck it.
