  • Now that it's back from repairs at Rode in Sydney, Australia, I thought I'd share my repair story with you all.
    Big props to Rode for taking care of me with this one, honestly they are a fantastic company, I can't praise them enough!

    I live in Los Angeles, I bought an open box NTK from Amazon about 10 years ago. It worked for 20 minutes before the PSU crapped out, emailed them and asked them some questions. I'm an Avionics Electronics Technician so I was wondering if they could help me figure out how to repair it, they said forget that it will void the warranty, but they offered to help if that's what I wanted to do. I decided to follow their advice, so I sent them the PSU and informed them I would be doing so. About a week later I received a brand new PSU that they shipped me the day I sent them the tracking for my own unit. Plugged it in and it worked perfect. I couldn't believe it. After that experience, with those unbelievably awesome guys at Rode, I became a Rode man for life. They are SO damn underrated.

      @@astrangeandmysteriouspodca7168 absolutely man, let me tell you that NTK is a fuckin tank! My studio was robbed and there was a shooting and a bullet clipped the mic cable in half not long after I made that post. I repaired it, works fine! Also, the mic was knocked over and it hit so hard the welds for the metal dust cover snapped off. The capsule inside and the tube still sound fantastic and are going strong damn near 15 years after surviving being dropped multiple times, thrown around by careless musicians and engineers, and a shooting. There is no doubt that Rode make the best quality gear at the best price you can find anywhere. I’ve A-B’d that NTK against my U87 multiple times with dozens of people on high quality studio monitors and headphones and no one can tell me which one is which. The only time the U87 pulls ahead is when doing many stacks of vocals or instruments, the smoothness and low noise floor don’t become apparent until you hit several tracks or more worth of stacks. Spend the money on room treatment!

    You did a good thing. You saved one great microphone. Try plugging it in a neve style preamp on on the low impedance setting.
    You'll never think U47 again !

    Yes Rode service is unbelievable myself and friends of mine we've all had the same amazing service experience from Rode they must be doing very well to fix mics for free. 1 friend of mine someone dropped his Rode NTR ribbon mic and it snapped in half he was telling me what happened so I said take it to Rode asap so he did and they actually replaced it free. I've never heard of this before.... amazing.

    I wonder if anybody experienced a clicks/ short micro buzzes with this mic in cardioid mode?
    Bought it late summer, brand new. Tested. It worked well. Recently I resllly started using it to record our home concert (few hours long). And when we had a last try before concert it worked well. But I used Omni directional, and I didn’t want it. On a concert I used a cardioid, and I found in the end of recording some random clicks… checked so far just tens of mins in beginning and the end. And no clicks in the beginning and too many in the end (including low sound pressure moments). And was really disappointed, the concert was good enough and I wanted to use this record to replace audio from cameras. Want to figure this out. I think it might be a tube. Also, might be something unrelated to mic. Will try to clean the tube legs and reinsert. Also will try to mail Rode, if cannot find the reason, or if I think that tube is the issue. tubes are not very cheap..

    Hello Matt, I wonder if you have used an automatic denoiser in post? Because I can definitely hear a buzz undertone every time you say something that completely falls away each time you take a pause. Is that buzz always there with the K2? And is that one of the reasons you sold it?

    • @MattDavid
      @MattDavid  3 года назад +1

      No de-noiser or gate was used. If you're hearing any noise, it's probably the computer fans. The mic is quiet, as is the pre. I only sold it because I got an Advanced Audio CM67SE which sounded similar but a bit nicer to my ears, and it didn't make sense to have both in my kit, I'd rather have more variation (e.g. I'm looking at a 47 style tube mic next).

    Hi Matt, great video thank you. I have a K2...wonderful mic! I wondered if you've tried the AT4080 with your voice?
    It's smooth and there are lots of examples on RUclips in case you're curious.(nb: It's a ribbon requiring phantom power).

      @MattDavid  3 года назад

      Hey thanks for checking out my vid. I haven't tried (or even heard of) the AT4080, I just had a look and listen on YT, it sounds incredible. Though it's worth a fair bit of coin so definitely one I'd need to save for :)

      @@MattDavid Yes, it costs more than the Rode K2. However, I somehow thought it might be better suited to the way you described your vocal characteristics. If you live in the upper Blue Mountains(NSW) I would be happy to lend one to you briefly to listen to :)

      @@johnkelly4351 Sometimes I wish I dad, as a mate of mine lives in the Blue Mountains and we share a lot of gear to test out and compare to other gear etc. Right now I have the Shure KSM44A for voicework, and the Advanced Audio CM67SE for singing, and I think each mic does extremely well, though I love the warmth and smoothness of that AT4080 so am definitely going to have to try it out some time. Thanks for bringing it to my attention :)

      Hey! I am looking to buy it for male vocals. I don’t know much about this stuff though :/
      I have a Focusrite 2i2 Interface and a basic laptop
      Will I be able to get the high quality vocals this mic is capable of? And how exactly would I connect it to my laptop? Would really appreciate your advice :)

      No, ended up selling it. Not because it's not good, but I just got a better mic that had a similar sound so figured I didn't need them both.

      @@graemenelson7956 I actually started using an advanced audio cm67se. The k2 is a really great mic but the AA mic just suited my voice better. I probably shouldve kept it really, but can't turn back time now 😅

      Yeah you'll get a good sound. The mic will connect up to your interface easily. A better interface / preamp will give you even better results but for now you'll still be happy with the sound. Good luck!
