Im not convinced that they sound good enough with a band. They seem to have a lot o cut-through compared to the bass , snare and splash . For such a bright and prominent hhat cymbal I'd make sure it can blend with other cymbals and instruments especially since it may have some tones that ruin things a bit. I suspect theyre a brand only good for splashes, chinas and studio hhats. Because studios often pick something with alot of 'crispness' and even using cheaper brands..

The Lindell has a better sounding mid transients, it's not harsh and with presence. The MMP73a it's to harsh for my taste.

Just purchased the K2, sounds almost exactly the same as NT1 5th Gen. Disappointed as for vocals the tube dooes nothing but for guitars and percussive sources it might do something, but I doubt. Actually it is a good news, with the NT1 you get a great microphone for pickles. But I just ordered the Telefunken, let's see if this will bring something to the table, but in reality it should be nothing that a simple plugin can not do. Let's see...

Thanks for your comment. Not sure what you're using to monitor, because those 2 mics don't sound alike at all. And the tube definitely does affect vocals, when you swap the tube to something smoother you can hear it mainly in the top end and the way it handles sibilance. And then of course it depends how much vocal you're pushing into it as to how hard the tube is being driven. I had an NT1, I didn't love it so I sold it. It is a decent mic for the money but there are so many good mics for that same amount of money these days, you can really take your pick. Anyway, hopefully you like the sound with the Telefunken (And sure you can always fix things in post, but I like to get everything sounding right before it even hits the interface!)

_// Thanks for sharing the video! Let me tell you something important: God loves you! God loves us ! He is no respecter of persons! because God wants us all to be saved! and let's go to the knowledge of the “Truth” God wants to save us from eternal damnation, which we all deserve because of sin, who entered the world through Adam, and death entered through sin, and thus death passed to all human beings, Therefore, we are all “Sinners” But God's Love was so great for us, that he sent his only Son (Jesus Christ), gave him to this world, to die and rise for all of us! No Respect of Persons! so that everyone who believes in Jesus Christ does not go to eternal punishment, but rather has “Eternal Life!” “ Jesus Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures; and he was buried, and rose again on the third day, according to the Scriptures Jesus Christ came to call sinners to “Repentance! “ and, he who believes in Him, has “Eternal Life! “But whoever refuses to believe in Jesus Christ, the wrath of God remains on him. Then, as through Adam's transgression, condemnation came to all human beings, in the same way, through the justice of Jesus Christ, justification of life came to all human beings! All of us who believe in The Only Savior of the world! The Only Mediator between God and us! The Lord Jesus Christ! The son of God! All of us who trust in Him; we have “Eternal Life! “ And we must know that there is salvation in no one else; because there is no other name under heaven, given to human beings, in which we can be saved. Only by Believing/Trusting in “Jesus Christ” can we be Saved! But Jesus Christ also said: Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Therefore, we must be doers of the Word of God! and not only listeners and/or readers, deceiving ourselves. So let's read the Word of God! There is His Will! what God wants us to do! Let us read mainly the Gospels; Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and let us pray to God, our Heavenly Father, all the days of the life that He gave us! God loves you! God loves us! To Him alone be the Glory Forever! Amen! Bible Source: Acts 10:34-35 / 1 Timothy 2:3-6 / Romans 5:12 / John 3:16 / 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 / Luke 5:32 / John 3:36 / Romans 5:18 / John 6:47 / Acts 4:12 / Matthew 7:21 / James 1:22 /,

I wonder if anybody experienced a clicks/ short micro buzzes with this mic in cardioid mode? Bought it late summer, brand new. Tested. It worked well. Recently I resllly started using it to record our home concert (few hours long). And when we had a last try before concert it worked well. But I used Omni directional, and I didn’t want it. On a concert I used a cardioid, and I found in the end of recording some random clicks… checked so far just tens of mins in beginning and the end. And no clicks in the beginning and too many in the end (including low sound pressure moments). And was really disappointed, the concert was good enough and I wanted to use this record to replace audio from cameras. Want to figure this out. I think it might be a tube. Also, might be something unrelated to mic. Will try to clean the tube legs and reinsert. Also will try to mail Rode, if cannot find the reason, or if I think that tube is the issue. tubes are not very cheap..

Nice shootout. All working good, but MXL being cheaper needs extra work on post eq for clarity. For the ads sample, Rode sounded fit for that job, has a radio broadcast feel. AE6100 sounds clear but a bit thin on that ads example. I just actually bought one of this ae used from auction, out of impulse & curiosity. I hope it sounds good 👍

Yeah the Rode does a pretty damn good job. I ended up selling it to a mate that does voiceovers and he's been using it to successfully read for Australian and Singapore radio and TV. It's a very respectable sounding mic. The AE is a fantastic live vocal mic for the money. I used to use it in gigs and got told off a couple of times because it made the other guys' mics sound bad haha. Hope it works well for you!

Thanks for this! I had a MK319 (modded by Michael Joly) back in the day and stupidly sold it. I've been using an AKG c214 but it doesn't feel complimentary to my baritone voice. I've been missing my MK319 (but it seemed too boomy to me prior to the mod). Looking into the rode nt1 as an alternative (since those mods aren't available anymore) so I appreciate this video. To my ears, the NT1 is more in line with what I'm looking for.

subtle difference but lindell sounds better. If I were doing vocals I'd save up for a $500 price point for that polish. You have a great voice - but I didn't like the acapella much - but the music back and the EQ / compressor transforms it. All of a sudden it's recognizable style and works. So - impressed.

Both sound really dull and damped mid-high range. But still good for their price, I mean, in both equipments you get good value for money, but still they don't sound better than a good preamp onboard a good audio interface. Anyway you have the chance to drive the analog signal before going into DA, so they ARE plenty useful even if they are not exquisite sounding machines. Thanks for the test

I will say GREAT video. Lindell sounds tighter and the Alctron sounds looser. I was really trying to figure out what it really is. Tone, gain, distortion etc were not the aspects I was using to differentiate between the two because that all can change. There are real nuance differences and its facinating to get close to pinning it down. Again not talking about tone or gain characteristics. Its more like the speed and resonance of transients combined with constant signal. Anyway. The Lindell felt fast, steady, tight with an even amount of sparkle. The Alctron seemed to respond more slowly to transients, less chisel with a make up resonance thing. Pretty interesting. Both sounded good. I think the Lindell was stronger.

What was the signal path between the preamps and the DAW? Did I miss that somewhere? Were you going into a line level A-to-D converter or into the front end of a consumer interface with another preamp circuit in the path?

Anyway, you say it's an honest company, yet Alctron is known for taking designs of other companies that they've manufactured for and then putting their own brand on it. I'm not saying they're necessarily bad, but they're not some boutique 1 man show coming up with their own designs. Yes they make good products for an awesome price and I'l always recommend them to anyone trying to make music on a budget. Your thoughts that me talking about the alctron not handling my vocals was "out of line" is ridiculous. All I said was that the gain got crunchy really quickly, compared to the Lindell. Having played around with these more after this video, I can say that this original version got crunchy with lower gain, the 2nd version took more gain before getting crunchy, and the third version took even more again (each version was a different shade of orange/yellow). And if you'd care to read the other comments in here, you'll see that people actually appreciate the review video, and various opinions float around about which pre seems to suit which purpose better.

Thanks for the Video. It shocks me there isnt more on the Lindell pre. I own it and own much higher end neve clones and api. IMHO people put way to much on the differences, To me the Lindell is a VERY nice preamp even money aside ~ it sounds like a neve ish style to me mainly very warm. A side note I own a couple of the Alctron EQ75a's and I really enjoy those too neve like EQ with a big transformer. Yea imo people get lost in so much hype in audio stuff and again imo lindell knocked it out of the park with this pre. Input and output transformers and pultec passive style eq for this money. whew the things you can get on a budget is really cool. PS I definitely prefer the lindell as you could always eq to match the thinner sounding alctron post preamp. thanks again keep it up
