Solid recording and great prog band behind it. I have two Alctron dual channel rack pres coming from swamp and two chan cost me the same as one chan of GAP pre 73. I was particularly pleased at how much the Altron cost here in Oz per channel compared to other countries. It's been quite a wait (month and a half approx) but they're here now and I signed up for the wait time willingly. I'm not a total cheap arse but these bring a smile to face. Two chan of Sebatron Axis and 4 chan of these Alctrons and I feel I will be able to just forget about my regrets of selling my old pre's years ago (Neve, API, JLM etc). I wouldn't mind another JLM Tmp8 though...that thing rocked...it's just well out of lock down budget at the mo and almost too many channels 😄.
Yeah JLM is pretty damn good, I just scored one recently (totally unplanned) and am loving it so far. These alctrons definitely punch well above their weight though and I reckon if you knew what you were doing you could easily record a pro sounding track with them.
Really nice comparison! Something that has been putting me off is the lack of a HPF on the Alctron. Have you found that problematic (for vocals, mainly)? Thanks!
I only ever ran it through a desk which had a HPF on it, so it was never an issue for me. Plus a lot of mics have a HPF on them. I guess if you're unlucky and don't have either (desk or mic with hpf) then it could be a problem (though that might mean that it's time to get an eq to run after the pre, which is a pretty common thing to do during tracking anyway).
Ha I think you got to that gumtree one before me as I was eyeing it off then it as was gone... I’m just gonna buy a new one - can get for about $200 from swamp with a discount voucher. Sounds great. I recently got the Alctron CP52A 500 series compressor and it’s also great.
Haha sorry about that! I'd been thinking of getting one of these since last year some time so when I saw it I knew I had to have it. If it is the same as the GAP PRE-573 then that would explain a lot, as it really is hard to hear any difference. Are you able to disclose where you're finding that Swamp discount voucher? :D I'm keen to get another one (or 2, or 7 haha) in the future, though I know they put them on sale every now and then so I figured it'd be worth waiting till then since I'm not in a rush. (The other problem being that they don't have any in stock at the moment)
@@MattDavid Swamp have sent me a discount code each time I've bought things from the recently. Yeah apparently they are back in stock in a couple of days so I'm going to grab one then. Yeah I saw someone on a forum mention that they opened up a GAP PRE573 and the Alctron and the components are completely identical inside.
@@clintonmaher6930 Damn that's lucky. I think I'll be waiting till they're on sale and I'll grab another one :D In saying that though, today I went to plug in the unit with TRS and TS cables and neither one is giving me love, I don't know if it's an issue with the preamp or my juicerack, but I can't get anything out of it. Pretty frustrating.
@@MattDavid In my 3 slot Alctron lunchbox I couldn't get any signal on TRS either. I thought it was the rack, but it could be the Pre as the Lindell lunchbox doesn't have TRS at all.

By the way reports suggest it actually IS the GAP73 internally... made in the same factory
You're right they sound great! I
similar yes. how do you bypass all plugins in one click?

@@MattDavid thanks a lot for the quick reply. Yeah, or, in the meantime, I could try to eq ITB. Thanks!
The same as the GAP 500 series version I mean
nice one how does the alctron sound on vocals
