The problem is people value being famous more than doing good business.
There you go right there!
Nope, thats not the reason. The reason is power disadvantages.
he's so right. as writers, they absolutely fucking deserve a percentage of the master. the song LITERALLY WOULDN'T EXIST without them. yet they see none of the streaming revenue? fuck the fuck off. i feel his anger too. this industry grinds you down so much man. i'm obviously not at the jon bellion level, but the amount of time you hear the phrase "it's just industry standard" - WELL LET'S CHANGE THE STANDARD THEN BECAUSE IT'S NOT WORKING FOR THE PEOPLE CREATING THE LITERAL MUSIC. ugh.
Facts this the truth
No. They get paid a big chunk for the writing the song. If it flops then the label has all the risk and wastes 5,6 figures on a dud song. While the writer is living in a new house. If it works out then the label deserves the risk.
Lol yes another average entitled lazy musician. If you didn’t master the song why should you earn money from it? You ironically want to steal money from the people who mastered the song cause they should be getting all of the money from the work they did. Continue that line of thought and you’ll end up a one hit wonder trash can artist like this guy
You got your revenue stream with selling vocals tho
@@filltheglass2618writers only get like 20%
Labels are the biggest pimps in the entertainment industry
I love how straightforward and honest Jon is in the beginning 💯💯💯
Thank you for the reminder and sharing all this knowledge.
This is why I am all about DIY and being Independent with the Artists and Producers I work with.
It will take longer, but the pay off in the long run is insane 💸💸💸
So I’ve been making beats for about 5 years now and I still don’t understand the music industry. Labels and all that is the MOST confusing thing ever. I just like making beats man.
The power of that system is confusion and manipulation
Stay as Independent as you can. I am also a producer and it is such a free feeling to know i can make music and release it and not owe anything to anyone but also i dont have to be involved in shady business deals. Keep pushing! I know you can be great!
Can’t believe he wrote Holy. All makes sense why I loved that song so much and I was heavily listening to Jon at the time
"If you're even here in 5 years, labels..." Dang.
Yep, cause that business model is unsustainable. As horrible as it is, it can’t last forever
streaming platforms will benefit from being record labels.
They will be… because they’re taking 94 points!
Guess you haven’t heard of apple. Cost them 10 bucks to make an iphone they sell for a thousand.
I love how passionate he is about music, I've been a fan for years
Good interview. Honestly, getting masters needs to be a right for every songwriter!
Gracias! Appreciate the insight. Doin' god-level good work
Thanks for the info!!!!!!!
2 years in the game owning my own label. Be the change you want to see! Great video.
I'm two years in as well! Much success to you!
@@backhouserecords6159 let’s get it!
oh my god, you got jon bellion on the show that's crazy
To not have these issues with labels have good management and oh yeah you have to be goated
Facts over FACTS! 100% Dope EP
All BS. These labels aren’t charities. If the song flops then the label has all the risk and wastes 5,6 figures on a dud song. While the writer is living in a new house. If it works out then the label deserves the rewards. The $2MM he mentions from that one song includes 10 other fails, marketing costs & other overheads etc. This is why labels are doing 360 deals now.
this guy rules
Awsome job george God bless
So well said!! They will prey on what you don't know!
And he only vaguely skimmed the surface of the problem here. I hope that he rides this little viral momentum and shines the light on the truth. Gonna require some courage. ♥️
The "Music Business" has been suspect from the begining... never fair to the Artist.
I'm on a pretty big label (6th biggest in the world according to billboard charts) and the artists get WAY more than 50% on the royalties for their releases.
Always found it crazy af that artists will be willing to sign these crappy deals where they no longer own the rights to their songs.
That's why people really should stop hating on the artists in the industry that are speaking out against artists rights because they say "you're rich." As a working artist who is trying to make it at that level and also have good quality, it's sad.
440 hz what do u expect
Damn i didnt knew he has written HOLY
He went from 6 to 7 to 3 4
Because it fluctuates bro, every song and label gives different point to writers and producers, so he’s probably been apart of deals where he’s had 6,7,3,4,5,2 the point is, it’s not a lot.
Probably why he’s signing these shitty deals. 6 became 3 in less than 4 seconds

facts
People like this LOVE to talk because they aren't cutting the check. Sure that movie made 100 million, but it was the studio who took that SOLE RISK. You got your $50,000 guaranteed regardless if every investor ate sand... Would you have been okay getting paid nothing upfront and a conditional percentage if the project succeeds? Nope. People only say that retrospectively about projects that strike it big, not the hundreds of failures that happen a year! Ask anyone established in the arts for anything and they will demand an upfront payment.
Heck producers like Jon will not only want you to pay thousands of dollars for their beat upfront, but they also insist on taking 50 percent of the publishing while paying for none of the studio time, none of the mixing and mastering, none of the marketing and promotion etc... How are they any better than a label? Or is it only okay when they demand everything and more.
Jon is also only seeing things from the producer's perspective. I think he is forgetting these labels are literally getting money loaned out to them and taking all the risk! They are doing that to MAKE MONEY, not break even. Artists will complain about labels day and night but will almost never take that 2 million dollars out of their own bank account to fund the album. They'll equally balk at the idea of taking out a loan to finance it. Instead they expect the label to do all the work, take all the risk, and give them a 50 percent split too LOL.
Get real kid, this is the music BUSINESS, not charity.
i guess u could say
hes at an all time low
shittt….
jon bellion and this show is both owned by the media they claim to call out... This is all clickbait
Totally disagree!
Lol exactly it’s hilarious watching these man babies cry over decisions they made lmao. Most artists know less than nothing about business and expect everyone to hold their hand through all of it
@@chrisparsons1766 100%. They all want 0 risk and all the rewards. I suppose if the label loses money he’ll be happy to refund his advance?
well put, i said the exact same thing!
I agree but at the same time that doesn’t mean these artists aren’t being screwed. Labels take advantage of this and take way more than they should be. Not only that, the labels know what songs are gonna blow and which ones won’t. They literally have control over it. So they are screwing over the artists
@@markfisher1062 In all fairness, if labels knew which songs would blow they wouldn’t go out of business. Multiple albums don’t do well despite massive budgets and marketing. In 2013 $25MM, $36MM in today’s money, was spent on Lady Gaga’s Album, Artpop. The album had the largest 2nd week decline in sales. The label did not recoup that investment.
lol
First 💪
Super interesting but it's really hard to listen to someone who's that coked out of their head.
