This surfboard review is for the hotly anticipated Channel Islands High 5 Review + Futures AM2 Fins & should answer the question: Is it a more radical brethren of the popular Channel Islands Average Joe? Channel Islands High 5 is definitely looser and faster than it's more conservative cousin.

Yet, you can still paddle into just about anything on this board and, when your fin setup is dialed, this CI High 5 turns into a supersonic surface planer.
Another soon to be summer / small wave hit by Al Merrick and the CI crew, this is the Channel Islands Surfboards High 5 Review.

I had a question if some more experienced surfers could help me out with. So im looking to get a new board as winters coming but i find it harder and harder to go on days with big sets being im still in high school so i end up usually only getting to surf Friday after noons weekend and mornings of late start days. I have a 5'8 firewire board I ride when its 7ft plus but my old fish has broken. So im looking for a new kind of groveler board. But since its winter i would like to be able to ride it in up to about 5ft sets as well as 2-3 for the small days. I was thinking about getting the channel islands high five. I am 5'8 120 pounds male so most would say i should get it in like a 5'4 but i was thinking of getting it in a 5'6 to maybe be able to catch bigger sets up to 5 or 6 ft like i said. Is this a good decision or should i look at other options or will a 5'4 suit me in those conditions anyways. I surf mainly Ventura and Malibu. Any help would be appreciated!

Hey Benny great review. I have a High 5, 6'0, the # 4 ,6'1 and a Rusty Dwart,6'0. I thought the High 5 would be similar to the Dwart but I seem to like the Four and the Dwart more. Granted it was early spring In So Cal, but even in similar waves the High 5 requires more effort to get into early summer mushy waves. Any thoughts??? PS all the boards are within 1.5 l. of each other

Theo Von Imbior Hey Theo, having ridden all three, I agree it requires more effort to get the High 5 to do what you want, whereas with the DWART & Four, I could jump on and go...the experience was pretty effortless. That said, I think the High 5 has merits in that it can really be pushed hard when the waves are really small (sub-waist high)

How does it go with a thruster fin setup? How would you compare this to the Mayhem Lost Puddle Jumper and which would you choose in knee to waist high surf?

Jack Richter Hi Jack, since filming this, I've used the CI High 5 as a thruster with the large Futures F8 Blackstix (Black/Maroon) and A) I prefer it as a thruster and B) it needs large fins!
Between the High 5 and Puddle Jumper, it's no contest...this board is great but I LOVE the Puddle Jumper. It's more user friendly yet still performs. It's one of the best small wave boards I've ridden and I think will go great for anyone looking to up their small wave game!

what size would u recommend for someone that is looking for a 2nd board for non-ideal condiotion, im 6' and usually use 5'8" 27L shortboard which to be honest could probably be a bit bigger

majcyy Hey there, have you seen our surfboard sizing guide? Check it out: bit.ly/knowyourvolume
I always recommend upping your literage for this style of board, too, given the weak, small waves it's designed for

Great review. I have the Average Joe in five different sizes and can tell you they are really different boards. One size is not the true dynamic of a board. My 5'1"is great in chest to head high vs my 5'9" males the best mini longboard for ankle to waist high waves. This is most likely true for this board. I would really be interested to have a review of the Mod Pod vs the High 5. Please do that.

Hi Benny, I am looking to purchase a new board and it is between the pod mod or the high 5 (until I learned about the sampler so possibly even the sampler if you think it would work better for me). I am just getting to the intermediate surfing level learning to now bottom turn, carve and do cutbacks etc. I weigh 140 pounds and I am 5'9. The current board I have now is a 6'2 X 20.5 X 2.62 and is 36.1L . I am looking to get into a smaller board that is much more manueverable. I feel these dimensions I currently have on my board are a bit crazy. Could this possibly be the reason I feel like my progression of learning how to turn is taking a lot longer to become comfortable with and making it harder than it should be?. I surf anywhere from small 2ft mushy waves to 5-6 foot waves (rare only on hurricane days). Please let me know what board you would recommend for me either the pod mod, the High 5 or the sampler and what dimensions you think would fit me best. (I'm 25 and athletic if this helps). Thanks man Love your video reviews!!

Hey Louis, out of those three, the only one I would recommend is the Pod Mod. I think the other two will be difficult for you to surf given your description. As for the volume / surfboard sizing conundrum, check out these articles - they should help you arrive at the right volume.

      AND
2.) Know Your Volume, Catch More Waves - bit.ly/knowyourvolume
That said, I encourage you to go a little bit too large vs. too small at your level! A little more volume only helps most surfers, especially beginners and novices!
      All the best,
      Benny
