    I bought the d500 and the nikkor 200-500 and the nikkor 17-55 from your recommendation, I love them all, d500 is great in every way, I listen to your videos and I love your comments and experience, Rick in Sydney Australia. 👌

    Hi
    I own a D500 and a D5. As a bird photographer, I use the D5 in conjunction with the 1.4 converter and the Nikkor 600mm F4 lens. With the D500 without converter I have no chance to achieve the same image quality as the D5. Flight recordings with 1.4 teleconverter at the D5 are no problem at all. For me and I speak from experience, and not only on the basis of technical specifications, the D500 does not come to the quality of the D5!
    The D500 is a topp camera, without doubt. The constant rushed against the D5 I can not understand.
    Best regards from switzerland

      Hello
      Thank you for the compliment. We have here in switzerland very trusting kingfisher.
      I can approach a distance of 6 meters without problems.
      More pictures can be found here: www.explore-wildlife.ch
      Have fun while looking at

      Thanks for the link! I am always looking for photos that could serve as a standard of how a bird photo should look like
      It must be so great to have trusting birds. Here in Greece, the only birds that are really trusting at the feral pigeons.
      I am an enthusiast using a D500 and a nikor 200-500 and I try to get good pictures of as many birds as I can, especially the often overlooked small birds which to the untrained eye look like sparrows from far away.

      Hello
      I now this, we have the luck in Switzerland that we have many nature reserves and lakes. The whole year round, there are many species of birds which are in the passage. Have enough time, and enjoy this great hobby. I take pictures with the D5 and the 600mm / F4. My wife used the same kombo as you and is very happy with it. I wish you always much light!
      Rrgards from switzerland, Sergio

    As an owner of a D5 and a D500 who has been using them since they came out I can honestly say that most of the time you just talk B.S. You don't mention the fact that has also been reported by other reviewers that the D500 has a tendency to over expose, I could go on but I won't. I solved the problems of the D5 and the D500 by not being a dinosaur and buying a Sony a9 and have never looked back. Stop whining and grow up and get yourself into the 21sr century.

      hi Bhabani .... and I did just the opposite .... i went to buy d500 and got the D750 instead ..... d750 is full frame was cheaper with kit lens 24-120 f4 than d500 with kit lens 16-80 f2.8-4 ..... not regretting my decision - its the camera body that works the kit lenses are practically same though 24-120 is slightly better as it is f4 over its entire range and the F2.8 is basically f4 eqvt on dx .... I later got a used d7200 also - this is also good camera .... nothing to beat d500 for fast af and buffer

    Have to disagree that the D5 is not a fantastic camera. As far as pro bodies are concerned, I've owned the D4 and the D5, and the D5 blows the D4 out of the water. The focusing is magical, 9 out of 10 sharp photos shooting fast moving performers in concerts with fairly low light, the D4 maybe 4 out of 10 tops and the 3d focusing is amazing, of which there is none on the D4, and the continuous focus it does have is borderline useless. The low light is sick, a minimum of 3 stops better than the D4. But you mentioned that, so that's not my argument, but worth mentioning. I will say that the D4 is better in the studio at iso 100 and I like the color tones better on the D4 for portraiture and studio. Other reasons to buy the D5. It's a tank. I can throw it down the stairs and it still works. Try that with the D500, another reason, the button layout and ergonomics is considerably better. The stick/button that moves the focus point around is much better than the D4 as well. I also like the dual QXD. QXD and CF is stupid. I don't know what the battery life on the D500 is, but I can shoot for a 12 hour wedding on one battery. Also, full frame cameras just have better image quality and better
    bokeh. If it rains on you, the D5 laughs it off. Not so much for the D500. So there are many things that are better about the D5 than just the low light performance, however low light performance is the number one reason to spend money on a camera, so it's one hell of a reason with the D5. I love it.

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  7 лет назад +1

      thats not a correct analogy, of COURSE it beats the D4.... who said otherwise??
      The D5 is a nasty wench and VILE value camera....... it SUCKS EPIC in the arena of nikon DSLR
      it has a crappy AA filter (OLPF).... crap video....... the ONLY DAMN thing it does better than the D500 is insane high ISO performance...... and a WEEE tiny bit faster AF tracking.
      its a piss waste of $4000+ extra

    • @lolsa123
      @lolsa123 7 лет назад +1

      and you conveniently forgot the durability which was one other of Danny's concerns,
      so let us get this stright,
      the d5 is faster, higher ISO capability, more durable, fullframe and a better batterylife
      while the d500 have a AA filter, cropped and is a couple of steps less in everything else?
      why is it wasteful to buy the D5 if you are an working professional that cant afford to miss a critical picture in any weather/location you are in?

    • @TheFykle

      What about the D4S which was apparently alot better than the D4

    • @AdamJonesPhoto
      @AdamJonesPhoto 2 года назад

      I agree with most of your points, but everyone knows the D4 was pretty poor. The D4s however was a much better camera , with a way superior AF system.

    • @dpmatsontube
      @dpmatsontube 2 года назад +1

      @@AdamJonesPhoto I agree, the D4 was very disappointing as a flagship camera. but the D5 is the subject. It's better than the D500 for several reasons. That said, the D500 having the same focusing system is huge. But it doesn't compare in low light.

    If I'm shooting portraits or weddings, which do you think is better? I'm using a D600 now.

  • @Smokin07ram
    @Smokin07ram 8 лет назад +13

    I took me some time with both cameras to sort this out...so here me out.
    I am a hard working pro...and if I am not shooting I am angry because I am not making money....
    I hate post processing and I hate paying for a retoucher's time.
    The idea that the D500 is better that the D5 in autofocus because of coverage is inaccurate.
    Nobody will be using a D500 at the Olympics...Yes, I am going as a working pro....No I am not going for the money! :)
    If you shoot at high performance venues you know it has to come out of camera perfect...or not at all. My assistant will be selecting and uploading my images live...At most she will rotate an image and touch contrast. There is almost no delay at this Olympics and the bar has been set at less than 15 minutes (14 actually)! I am trying to get it done in under 5 minutes from capture to to posting them. This was previously unheard of. National Geographic has a saying that captures the Olympic furor perfectly, " f8 and be there!"
    If you are heavily or regularly cropping? Professional is a name you have have gives yourself and not one assigned by your clients.
    Coverage and autofocus speed and accuracy are separate and have nothing in common.
    Put big professional lenses on both and the clear winner for professional sports is the D5.
    The lower and lessor the light the more true this becomes.
    I turn down the amount of tracking point in certain circumstances to give the cameras abetter chance of staying exactly where I want it....both cameras. Like I said Nobody is shooting the D500 at the Olympics....Not because it isn't good, but because it is second best.
    The idea that the D5 is is a terrible portrait camera is absolutely silly.
    Yes the D500 makes sharper slightly more contrasty images, but since when does that have anything to do with a great portrait?
    That contrast and sharpness also applies to things we so not want to see...things clients do not want to pay for.
    The D5 render is beautiful in its own right...Something that can no be overstated or I think appreciated until you have significant use under your belt. It is my current preference for out of doors portrait sessions. Indoors I am using the D810 or medium format. The D500 is exceptional here as well, but is second best to the other choices.
    Don't forget most portraits are of normal people and not fashion models...Sharpness and high contrast are not desirable in anything but the eyes...something that takes seconds to resolve in the D5 capture.
    Fashion and beauty photographers are either running a D810 or have gone to a medium format.
    For a wedding shooter the D5 SOOC render is closer to what customers currently want.
    Nikon got it right there and it took me a while with working with the D5 to see that.
    I still use my D810 for the formals, but those see my retoucher before my client sees them.
    I brought the D500 along for several weddings and have moved away from it for those purposes.
    Not because it isn't good, because the D810 is better and the D5 creates less post production everywhere else.
    One paper a D5 is a shitty landscape photographers camera, yet many Nikon pros use a D5 and a D810?
    No landscape guy is using a crop sensor for FOV purposes and wide lens choices....Just the way it is.
    Yes the D500 is outstanding....I think the D810, D5, and D500 are the best Nikon has ever made.
    The D5 though...is hardly no bueno....lol
    Pick the right hammer for the job

      you said---The idea that the D500 is better that the D5 in autofocus because of coverage is inaccurate.
      NOPE, thats not true, the AF doesn't reach EITHER side for tracking, its the same AF sensor on both.
      nobody???? NOT TRUE, most olympic shooters also CROP, and the D500 has FAR FAR better cropability than the D5 does
      also no AA filter which means the D5 look trashier at 100%

    Can the d500 shoot amazing portaits tho? I know you've said the D810 is king for portaits but how does the D500 do when it comes to portraiture? Does it hold up or does it lack. Im currently trying to upgrade from the D5500 and would like to know if the D500 is right for me since I want all the amazing feature of the D500 but also would like to step into full frame and get the d810 pixel detail benifits

    Hey Ken, I love my D500 so far! Only thing is the buffer drops to like 35 shots when using the sandisk 95 mb/s uhs 1 cards set to dual card backup with full compressed raw... Do you use the 280mb/s uhs-2 cards? And how much more "buffer" will a uhs 2 card give? You got got me shooting with second card set to back-up for redundancy over a year ago! Cheers Man!

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  8 лет назад +2

      you should be using the EXTREME PRO cards………. no, the D500 cannot get the full potential out of UHS-2 cards, they "WORK" in the D500, but it does NOT utilize their full speed potential.

    • @SoMuchTwoSay
      @SoMuchTwoSay 8 лет назад

      +Theoria Apophasis yea that's what I'm using, 95 mb/s , the ones you've been recommending. Thank you, so it is not worth upgrading to the uhs-2 cards for the price they are now... Maybe when they are cheaper! The thing is already a beast, I think I can work with it lol 😂✌🏻️

    • @SoMuchTwoSay
      @SoMuchTwoSay 8 лет назад

      +Theoria Apophasis I'm 99% Sure unless Best Buy has been selling fakes haha. With every thing turned off in the photo shooting menu, D-lighting, long expo NR, high iso, vignette control, distortion control, etc... And the NEF compression on lossless compressed the buffer shows (r29). With the secondary slot set to backup, if fires off exactly 33 shots before the SD card starts backing up. Of course if I set it to overflow or only to use the XQD, it goes the full 200. Obviously the extreme pro 95 mb/s can't doesn't have the same write speed: 390 vs 90 mb/s. That's why I asked About the newer UHS-2 Sandisk SD, which writes at 250 mb/s, giving better results regarding bottlenecking at the card. But that's only if the d500 will stay in UHS-2 mode correct? I read that it will jump back to UHS-1 mode... Isn't that what the latest firmware update address?

  • @JohanSchmidt
    @JohanSchmidt 7 лет назад +1

    Absolute twat that the D500 focuses as well as the D5 - the D5 is WAY better. The same was said for the D750 and the D4s focusing modules - anyone who has tried to use the D750 as a sports camera has been very dissapointed. The D5 is in another league

    • @KenTheoriaApophasis
      @KenTheoriaApophasis  7 лет назад +1

      im sorry youre confused..... AF is both camera side and lens side ... wildlife shooters are using the D500 1000 to 1 over the D5.
      the facts elude you

    • @JohanSchmidt
      @JohanSchmidt 7 лет назад +1

      Not confused about anything - my experience has been that shooting a rugby player running towards you amongst other players, the amount of images that sharp are many more with a D5 than a D500 in a burst - no doubt about it. Using AF-C, single point focus with 0 delay on both bodies with a 400 2.8.I can understand that wildlife shooters like the D500 due to the crop sensor, but in general, players on a field in a competitive match, move much more randomly than wildlife in general. A good test would be to shoot something like a sparrow flying randomly & low to the ground

    Isn't it nice that Nikon just for you created the new Elephant in the Room?? The D5 has just become stupid obsolete. Fast glass, and the D500 will be all anyone will ever need. Are you a highly paid pro? Still want the D5? Go ahead and buy it! Your money. But the real life at the end of day, do you want a boat anchor weight D5, or the much lighter D500? That is a duh question there. D500 all day long. By the way, $4000.00 saved is allot glass I could buy for that D500 where the D5 my budget is tapped out. I keep telling everyone get a D500 if you get any Nikon. It IS the one Neo!

      To be fair Ken treats people the same as he treats himself, problem is he is a self praising idiot.

    20mp is 20mp, to claim either crops "better" is rubbish. From dpreview studio scene d5 looks crisper. Even d4s and canon 6d seems better to my eyes.
