      Sigma ART 35 f1.4
      Get that nikon the fuck outta here lmfaooooooo
      The DX 35mm f1.8G is a HELL of a lens, but check ANY site of a google search, and they will say the 35mm ART is THE wide angle prime for either FF or DX.
      on DX the 35mm is ALMOST too much, I'd almost prefer a Nikkor 20mm f1.8, but that's super wide...and its fantastic

    After much research on everyone's opinion, 2 years ago I got the 200-500 as first new lens for the D500. Second lens was the 17-55. It really is incredible, if only for the look of that awesome front element. Really valued your obviously learned opinions Ken. Confirmed when you mentioned Steve Perry. He struck me as a straight shooter like you; not selling any equipment. Super happy with both lens.

    Great overall pick for 3 lenses. I love my 17-55, sharp, contrasty even wide open and pro build, you are right about that lens after going through some consumer ones and then finally getting it, only to kick myself asking, "Why did I not just get this one at first?" The 11-16 Tokina perhaps the best ultra wide if to add one more.

    Thank you Ken! I recently purchased the D500 with 200-500mm lens in a kit called the sports and wildlife kit, included the vertical grip, 2 - 32GIG XQD cards, 2 - XQD card readers, 2 - batteries ... and a few other trinkets, all for the price of what you'd pay for the lens and camera alone. I don't know if I can afford the new 70-200 but I am currently trying to nab the 60mm micro for a song. It isn't part of your trinity but it is a must have, especially if you want to do macro.

    Thank you again for the recommendation of the 17-55.
    I only bought it because of your recommendation and I am so glad I did. At first I was scared because it cost more than I planned to pay and doesn't help with wildlife shots (fantastic for landscapes) but the more I used it, the more I began to understand how amazing it is. This lens makes me realize the potential of photography. That is saying quite a bit.
    Thanks again.

    I was unaware that you could override crop mode on Nikon. You learn something new every day.
    Getting the most out of the frame coverage and then cropping in post has to be the only sane thing to do, if your workflow is exclusively raw. I'm sure the fancy-pants programs will let you set up some sort of crop preset on a per-lens basis. Optimise it then blaze away, baby.

    For those who want to save a little more money, go with the D500, the Nikkor 17-55mm used, the Tamron 70-200 2.8 G2 and the Tamron 100-200. You can save yourself a lot of money and get back very close to the same capability.

    You kinda jumped around alot and the trinity wasn't very clear, here's what I think it is: the 200-500, the 17-55 2.8 DX and the 70-200 2.8 (new one) you also threw in a couple others a 14-24mm and a 24-70mm.

    Hey Ken, what are the issues with the Sigma's, particularly the 18-35 f1.8? I do not have any frame of reference other than the reviews I have read, so I was just curious as to your take on them. And btw,...I love my D500! Trying to build my lens triangle, and I really appreciate this video and your take on the trinity of lenses

  • @markwentzell
    @markwentzell 7 лет назад

    Dont have a issue using fx lenses on dx, the issue I have is a 24mm fx is not a 24mm on dx and I want a 24mm (as an example) not a 1.5 crop factor which turns it into a 36mm. Thats the issue we dx users have, yes for tele its great but its under the tele range thats an issue.

    I do own 17-55 AF-S, T 70-200 VC, 200-500 AF-S and I do agree with them being the trinity for D500.
    But I don't agree with your view that Nikon doesn't need any more DX lenses. Of course I can use FX lenses and get great results, but if you compare... let's say... 35mm f/1.8 DX to 35mm f/1.8ED (FX), using FX lenses on a DX body has its disadvantages. Lens is unnecessarily bigger, heavier, and pricier if you compare an FX lens to a similar DX lens.
    Yeah, I could use 24mm f/1.8 or f/1.4 to get 35mm(ish) angle of view on my D500 but if I wish there was a smaller, lighter, (and maybe cheaper) DX 24mm f/1.4~1.8 lens. You do own a Fuji system and their 23mm, don't you? Wouldn't it be great to have lens like that (ie: light, compact, good quality) to use with Nikon DX bodies?

    • @djsuth7727
      @djsuth7727 7 лет назад +1

      I agree with you. Whilst FX lenses can be used with Nikon DX cameras it defeats the purpose of using a crop body, which for many people is to have a lighter kit. This is also one of the reasons why many folk are transitioning to the Fuji X system .... Fuji are making native APS-C sized lenses ; they are listening to the customer base. If Nikon ( and Canon ) continue to churn out just FX cameras & lenses they will crash & burn eventually.

    • @user-li4kq8zp5h
      @user-li4kq8zp5h 7 лет назад

      I do have some hope for Nikon anyway, because their release of D500 shows that they've not abandoned DX altogether. Maybe we'll get some nice DX lenses in the future.

    • @djsuth7727
      @djsuth7727 7 лет назад

      Sadly, I don't think they will. I think the D500 was produced to appease wildlife photographers who had been pleading with Nikon for years to give them something to follow on from the D300. I've seen nothing to indicate that Nikon believe in supporting the DX system ... at a prosumer level anyway.

    I adquired the 24-70E ED VRII paired with Nikon D500 based on your inmmense knowledge and I have to tell you it is spot on. I want to ask you if you would recommend to switch from D500 to D850 or to the new Z7. I’m looking for the best overall camera( quality, resolution, FPS, future proof,etc) everything than you would look for on your next Nikon camera. Can you recommend any of those for a little bit of everything photography or stay with D500. Thanks so much for your videos and thank you for any profesional recomendations that you can give me.

    Hi @Theoria. At 5:22 you say that the 17-55 Nikkor is basically a 24-70 field of view. Sorry for the stupid question but why is that? Isn’t the 17-55 a DX lens on a DX body? I’m really sorry if this is a lame question. New to photography.. But I did buy the D500 AND the 17-55 after watching your videos and I’m loving them btw! :)

    • @paganphil100
      @paganphil100 4 года назад

      sabrabba: The 17mm - 55mm produces the same field of view as a 25.5mm - 82.5mm would do on a full-frame camera because of the "crop factor" which is 1.5 for Nikon DX cameras. You need to multiply the focal-length (or range of lengths for a zoom) of a lens by 1.5 to get it's "effective / equivalent" focal-length (i.e. the full-frame equivalent)......I hope that makes sense :-)

    Good collection Ken. Thank
    You. I'm a bird/nature enthusiast who's opted for the 300 PF + 1.4III TC on my D500, over the 200-500 - largely for its portability. I find myself frequently pondering how they stack up in terms of IQ however. Price tags aside, do you have a view on how those combos compare? Keep up the great vids. Cheers.

    Ken Good Morning from Europe, I am a bit uncertain with one of the Trinities for the D500. The 200-500 for which Steve Perry said, comparing it with the 300 PF, that 3 out of 5 of the 200-500 had to be send back as having too much blur.....What is your opinion on that and also, how do you compare the 200-500 with the AF-S 300m f/4D ED-IF new, instead. And..look in your email. Indeed I do not know what I would have done without you. Many many thanks. Flora

    How about a link to either a Canon or Nikon 500mm f/2.8 lens? The longest f2/8 lens I'm aware of is only 400mm. They're close to dirt cheep in manual focus compared to the AFS or AFS VR versions.
    I've owned a Tamron 200-500 A31 Adaptall since 1995 and the auto-focus Tamron 200-500 SP-DI for a few years. Both good sharp lenses. The negative is the extended length at 500mm.
    The 200-500 Nikon is on the list for my Antarctic trip in February 2017. Traveling light, so only three lenses presently going, Nikon 17-35, Nikon 28-70, and Nikon 80-200, all F2.8. Would prefer all manual focus as the AFS lenses use a lot of power when cold. I'd love to take the 15mm along, but too big for limited use, maybe next time.
    Link for the 500mm f2.8 or was that a mis-speak?

    Have you used the Sigma lenses? what about the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens ? Is this not filling in a niche that no other lens in the market can do (its the only 1.8 zoom) or does it still "suck". also Sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary got this at €879 new versus 1.599 for the 200-500 nikon. So it got the job done at a lower price point it has some issues with locking on birds in flight, the image is "milky" but to be frank at that time and as a beginner I think the trade off was acceptable for the money I paid. facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10210555946602598&set=a.4437718668796.2178274.1464142538&type=3&theater is an example of what I shot on a D500 + the Sigma. (its anecdotal and has also had a lot of light-room editing to get to this point but I think its workable at almost half the price)

      Theoria Apophasis yes i get that one, it's a badass DX lens, I basically meant in general, my thoughts are if someone ever wanted to upgrade to a full frame doesn't it make sense to only have full frame lenses?

      $$$$$$$ - Not everyone is a working pro that can write off equipment. People have kids and other expenses...if you only had, say, $400 a year to put towards gear, would you go FX or DX? Also, FX bodies are worse for some purposes (wildlife where you crop most images heavily, for example. The lower pixel density means less detail.)

    @theoria apophasis Ken, when I think of a Trinity set, I'm thinking ultra wide, normal zoom, tele-zoom. does Nikon make a good DX wide angle lens for the D500? I ask because I have no experience with Nikon & am looking to build a wedding kit, whether it's Nikon, Fuji or Canon. I don't care, as long as it works well. Thanks! 😁

    • @jasonrehder953
      @jasonrehder953 7 лет назад +1

      Because the crop factor on the D500 you will want a DX specific Wide Angle Lens, you don't want a 14mm focal length acting like a 21mm. The AF-S DX 12-24mm f4G IF-ED is the best option for wide angle in my opinion, and Ken has posted the same. Avoid the AF-S DX 10-24mm F3.5-4.5..... It sounds nice have the extra range in focal length, but the distortion is much worse, to my eye the images are missing sharpness and color saturation in comparison. Side by side the 12-24 DX is much, much better for any of the Nikon DX series cameras D500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5500, D3500, etc....

    • @paulv8453
      @paulv8453 7 лет назад

      So the 12-24 DX lens is the equivalent of 18-36 on FF?

    • @jasonrehder953
      @jasonrehder953 7 лет назад +1

      No, if you use a FX or Full Frame lens on a DX, you have to add 50% to your focal length because of the crop factor. Nikon has a very good FX Wide Angle lens that is 14-24mm in focal length, however if you use that lens on the D500 it will have a range of 21mm to 36mm. So for the wide angle lens you want a lens made for DX camera's to give you the correct focal equivalent.
      The 12-24mm DX lens on a FX would act like a 8-16mm on the FX or full frame camera (if not used in crop mode), but will probably have some major issues with dark areas or vignetting. I have not tried to use this lens on any FX or Full Frame Camera so I can't speak to the specific results you would have. Most likely your camera will recognize the lens and automatically put your camera into crop mode from what I have read, thus reducing the area of the camera sensor being used to that of a DX camera. I hope that makes sense.

    • @paulv8453
      @paulv8453 7 лет назад

      Jason Rehder OK... so it's the equivalent to 18-36. that sounds good. So a good wedding kit would be 12-24, 17-55 + 70-200?

    • @jasonrehder953
      @jasonrehder953 7 лет назад +1

      for the D500, that sounds like a very good start and would cover all of the normal or expected shots for a wedding
