I am a fan of both the girls. From a drummer technical perspective Yoyoka is clearly ahead, however there a lot of buts. First of all there will be enough room for the both of them in the industry because they spread quality, love and joy. Second of all they have to go through puberty, you never know what that does to a person; it is all about preserving the fun. Third of all we do not know the development of their capacity to write original music. There are few like Pau Villarrreal. Music is not only art it is also business. Marketability is important and that is something you have to take in mind also. Finally there is something like taste. When I compare Moriah Formica (Plush) to Dany Villerreal (The Warning). From a technical point of view Moriah is the better singer, but I would always choose Dany above Moriah because of the soul in her voice, personality, stage presence, sense of spacing in arrangements and last but not least integrating the vocals in the entire sound of the band. Maybe Plush will get bigger than The Warning maybe not. At the end of the day I hope they both will be big. It is a great period for young female musicians to stand up and show their talent. Funny thing is that the kids under 10 are already knocking on the door: Gabe H, Kii and EllenPlaysBass are a few examples. Long live music for any talent and Andrew to react!

@@jackspratt7264 I think youre being a bit too harsh on Andrew, though your point about his limited "background knowledge" is probably accurate.
Yoyoka has been playing REGULAR PROFESSIONAL gigs since she was 4 or 5. That may be a slightly favorable take on the situation. However, it is an indisputable fact that her parents are professional musicians who make a living from live shows, and it is also an indisputable fact that Yoyoka started "sitting in" at age 3, and by age 5 or 6 she was one of the top reasons why people would show up to Kaneaiyoyoka performances. So yeah . . . whereas Nandi did get a chance to play live with a "big" band recently, Yoyoka has been doing that since her single-digits (At 9 she played with X Japan, and at 10 she played with Cyndi Lauper).

@@AndrewRooneyDrums "Dare I say she could do a Nandi"??? (smh)
Robert Plant said that Yoyoka could play with Zeppelin if she had tutors for the road and her parents came along, after seeing her play only ONE TIME and he was dead serious, no hyperbole. He said that nearly 4 years ago when Yoyoka won "Hit Like a Girl" in 2018 for her "Good Times, Bad Times" submission to their contest. She was 8 at that time.
Nandi Bushell is a lot of things, but a good drummer she is not. Critically speaking Yoyoka and Nandi aren't on the same playing field. Yoyoka's concern when playing the drums is the music. Nandi's concern when playing the drums, is Nandi and the spectacle that comes with that.
She's excellent at marketing herself and at the gimmicky side of performing. But as a drummer she lacks discipline, is notorious for her theatrics over her ability and the girl couldn't find the pocket if she was sewn into one. Nandi covers songs in 1 to 2 min increments, seldom the entire piece. When she does her desire to be showy over holding a solid beat dominates her efforts.
Meanwhile Yoyoka is tackling 10 minute epics, dance club bangers, hidden Prince classics and her own multi-instrumental renditions of The Beatles and Ed Sheeran.
But everyone is going crazy because of Nandi's publicity marketed "feud" with Dave Grohl that led to her playing with the Foo Fighters recently. Huge for her and another great gimmick and marketing scheme to help boost her career. Bravo, but it hasn't spoken a lick to her growth as a musician.
Meanwhile Yoyoka first played in front of a crowd of over 8000 people when she was 8. She played UNACCOMPANIED by another drummer with some of the biggest names in Japanese rock history on that day. At the time she'd already had over 150 live performances under her belt, having played in her family band at that point for 3 years.
For comparison I urge you to go back and look at what Nandi was posting on her RUclips channel in that same era.
Since then Yoyoka has been a featured guest a NAMM, taught drum clinics in Osaka, played in front of 20,000 people, (again UNACCOMPANIED) with "Fallout Boy" in Tokyo in the fall of 2019 and in front of a crowd of 10,000 with Cyndi Lauper that same year in addition to performing with Japanese model "Bambi Watanabe" at the Tokyo Girls Collection fashion show. That was the the 2nd year Yoyoka was invited I might add and the 2nd year she performed. Early the next year Drummer World's CEO and Publisher personally inducted her into the Top 500 Drummers of ALL TIME list for their magazine in 2020. Nandi Bushnell is nowhere on that list and it should be obvious why.
In the years leading up to the opportunities and accolades that would soon come, Yoyoka was honing her skills and letting her personal growth as a drummer speak to her pedigree, while Nandi was perfecting her stick twirls and outfit selection instead of her rudiments.
So, when you state, Andrew, that Yoyoka (like Nandi lol) could play with a big band like Zeppelin... 4 YEARS AFTER Robert Plant said the same thing in earnest and 2 YEARS AFTER she's already played in Tokyo with 2 huge American musical acts while Nandi was doing bad 1 min covers on her RUclips channel, well you can see why some of us find it hard to take you seriously.

But as far as "research" goes, don't expect any from him anytime too soon. This is a "drum teacher" who somehow wasn't familiar with some of the most legendary drummers to have ever lived BEFORE he made a "reaction" video to someone else covering their songs; a Patreon request no doubt. (smh)
But who am I to talk? If Andrew actually started to look into Yoyoka's history and watch her videos, because he appreciates her drumming, then he wouldn't be able to monetize her content on this channel.
So, he stays clueless, compares her to drummers who have lesser ability as though she is the one who needs to catch up and waits for his Patreon users to buy another Yoyoka reaction.
No one does anything for wonderment or pure interest anymore. It is what it is.

I was thinking the same thing - that it would be great to see her on stage with Page, Plant and Jones. Although, I'd settle for seeing her with Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures, QOTSA, one of Jack White's projects, one of Les Claypool's... or a good band comprising other young and/or Japanese and/or female musicians of comparable abilities. She is just so good. Just wow.

It is so impressive how she can play fills and come back to the groove while maintaining the same incredible feel with no wavering in the transition from fill back to the groove. It's all seemless, all with the same great feel. That's how pro's play. And it's especially great how she can shift easily to a slow triplet feel and back to a duple feel, and the slower triplet grooves just as hard as everything before and after. That's awesome!

Masterclass reaction imho, so much information you pass through Andrew. As already said I am not a Bonham addict. So to learn from your input, his strength is added value for me!! I watched the versions of this song of Bonham, Chad Smith (live), Matt Cameron (Temple of the Dog with Chris live!) and Yoyoka. She passes the test of comparison certainly taking in mind how she will play this in ten years which would be a more logical comparison from a physical perspective. Especially her way of giving the swing on her hihatt is to me so tasty. You took the words right of my mouth on her playing with the original 3 members; that would be something! Have a great weekend, you and Yoyo gave it to us.

You were talking about her snare tone. I'm assuming whatever you are hearing is intentional and very planned out. She seems to know (or feel) just what type of sound she wants from her snares, and then simply achieves it. She did this 38 Min video lesson last year, that you might enjoy (I know it's long, but it is packed with Yoyoka awesomeness...LOL) ""9 Snares Comparison" Yoyoka Drum course #35" ruclips.net/video/VtcQ5GthRxY/видео.html Of course she goes into great detail on each snare, what it is made of, it's thickness and dimensions, and a description of the type of sound it produces. As she describes each snare, before moving on to the next one, she plays the same set of licks or patterns on each snare, and includes various dynamics in the demonstration. She plays the same beats on each snare to offer you a way to easily compare them. Brilliant teacher for such a young lady! After all that, she goes to her kit and places each snare in her kit and plays another sample on each snare as it would sound in the kit. I'm not even a musician, but I found it most fascinating!

What’s also difficult about emulating John Bonham’s style; in many songs he was a microsecond of a beat behind where most drummers live. There was an almost imperceivable lag with Bonham’s groove that made Bonham, Bonham. We drummers have a tendency to live on the beat.

I've been looking through the comments for someone to field my question. I've played to this song about 50 times maybe, as a teenager. Do you think that her kick pattern during the verses is what Bonham played on the recording? I played it to follow Jones' pick pattern. She did a bit of that during 2:15 to 2:25, but used snare ghost shots where I used bass kicks.

If you want to learn that smooth whip like flow it is in tia chi. ive only been using a practice pad a couple of weeks but after years of tia chi (excuse the spelling) the one thing i can do is hit the pad whith whip like strokes . You can actually begin to internalize the whip like motion creating a lot of power with little movement

To elaborate for those who may want to try this, the whip like stroke, it actually starts at the bodys core if you over accentuate the motion twisting the body back then forward and alowing that to travel through the arm would equal one stroke but thats a lot of motion. you can with practice condense this down (internalize) this motion to a twitch within the core ie (allthe bodys weight would be behind each drum stroke). In tia chi this motion would be directed through the legs so the whole bodys weight would be behind it

That's the thing about Yoyoka. You really think she should be playing in a band with other extremely talented adult musicians and then you realize that she's still only 11 years old (very soon 12) and is really just a kid. It's just not really right for a little kid to be touring with a bunch of seen-it-all-done-it-all rock'n roll adults.
It's a strange conundrum. It's hard to get your brain wrapped around all that incredible very adult-level talent that she has, but yet she is still very much a child.
