An uncut interview with YOYOKA, a drummer and a super visiting professor of iU.
@@iUCHANNEL I like your style, Nakamura-sama.
I've been following Yoyoka for years and she's always been very honest about her interests and her music. Like you, I too am interested to see how she develops creatively and artistically even if she chooses to leave music behind one day.
I am far more interested in Yoyoka, the well rounded artist, than just Yoyoka the drummer.
Thank you for inviting her to be a guest professor at your school. I look forward to her progress!!
@@jackspratt7264 Let's see where she goes with this. She has incredible talent, but the music business has been in chaos ever since the large corporations took it over and decided to give us the same remix of four basic cords over and over and over. Same garbage lyrics slightly tweaked from song to song, sung by vocalists which they have to tell us are talented to make us believe that they are.
That being said, there is tremendous musical talent coming out of Japan, but off the islands, not much recognition.
If you look at two of the greatest female drummers im the world, the most talented is Senri Kawaguchi, hardly anyone outside of the drum world knows who she is. Yoyoka is multitalented, and definitely the best under 21 female drummer in the world. She has a little more recognition than Senri does. But if you look at Band-Maid, is this going to be the ultimate future of Yoyoka? Difficult to say.
She likes to sing so maybe she will get up off the throne and get in front of the mike.
I know that she likes architecture and has said that if her music asperations don't pan out, she may be an architect.
If this were the 60s, 70s or even 80s, she would be in a band which wpuld rock the world.
Not to say that she won't, that door is there but it is a much smaller door than it used to be when the music moguls push the Justin Biebers and Beyonces of the world shove them, or try to, down our throats.
In one respect, Yoyoka is old school rock. Queen of the quarter notes, multiinstrumentalist, vocalist, writer, choreographer, producer. She has the complete package.
As you say, it really doesn't matter if a musical career is in her background or not. There is no doubt that when these career decisions cross her path she will be able to make the appropriate decisions which will be in her best interests.
@@jackspratt7264 Well said Jack!!!
A very impressive interview. Yoyoka-chan showing maturity beyond her age.
Thank you for the English subtitles. I find it very refreshing that you, Mr. Nakamura, someone who is clearly very intelligent himself, and who has earned so much respect, is seeking out the opinions of someone such as Yoyoka who is so young. She is very intelligent, and mature. Very insightful in her thinking and does truly have a lot to offer to someone in your position. You treat her with the utmost respect, which she deserves. I know very little of the Japanese culture, but would have to believe that this might not be the norm for your culture, and many other cultures around the world. You clearly have done the same thing with many of your existing students, in order to create such a progressive University. Good luck to both of you, and I wish both of you the greatest success in your journey to educate the young minds of Japan!
Yoyoka, you have grown into a beautiful young lady. Don't ever forget to be humble and respectful. You are on your way to greatness. The world needs more young people like you. Thank you for your gift so very much.
Her conversational poise with an academic adult rivals her drumming skills. Don’t forget her age my friends.😎
"The school is a chance for human observation for me." And she's studying Picasso. And wants to write music in multiple genres. All this from an 11 year old. She is SO smart, and an artist at heart. She has a fan in me for life.
Very enjoyable. Interesting to hear what Yoyoka-san thinks. Her mind is very interesting. Thank you for this interview. Please keep creating Yoyoka.
Yoyoka is a special person and the Soma family are a great influence on my family! They are a special family indeed!
I pray she never gives up the drums, I believe truly she will be the best that ever played, she is only eleven. The future holds magic for her.
What an awesome young lady!
You rock Yoyoka!!
Amazing, she learn to play before she can talk...and I believe it.
Thank you Yoyoka for sharing your gift with the world.
Yoyoka!!!
Ever since I watched Yoyoka's Drum Course (which she started when she was around 8 years old!!), I have always recognised Yoyoka as a teacher. Even back then, her maturity and ability to communicate were way beyond her years. The maturity displayed by her in this interview did not really surprise me. I think she would make an excellent professor of music when the time comes for it. For now, I listen to her words with a huge amount of admiration and respect.
Thank you for this interview (and the English sub-titles that go with it).
I think she was a lot younger than 8 when she started giving lessons. Maybe 5 or 6? AND - even at that VERY young age - she WAS a good teacher!
Thank you for adding the English subtitles. Yoyoka is truly gifted, and your interview demonstrates that like many gifted children, her mind is on a different level, and she is easily bored by traditional teaching and learning methods.
Such a mature soul at such a young age.
I do truly like that she realizes that she still has things to learn in this world. She is humbly aware that she is very young and does not know everything there is to know. She is always open to new, and fresh, ideas and experiences.
Very Enjoyable Interview!! THANK YOU!!! For The English Subtitles 😊 Very Sincerely John In Savannah, Georgia 👍!!!
Excellent interview! I learned something I didn't know about this gifted musician Yoyoka. I personally think drums need no score. Other than scales over root notes I don not taint my influence with technicalities. I prefer to be organic in the space and play feelings if that makes sense.
You are getting so big young lady!!
Yoyoka is best
Congratulations for a great interview by Mr. Nakamura. I've watched everything "Yoyoka" I could find on the internet and I've never seen her so comfortable and engaged when she's interviewed as she is here. In videos shot in her home she appears most often as a goofy, fun loving little girl when she's not playing the drums - away from home she is serious and somewhat shy. Here though, she is serious but engaged as a much older teenager or adult with a genuine desire to communicate thoughts and feelings might be. Also the most articulate I've seen her. Thanks very much for the video and also for the English subtitles.
A Visiting Professor at 11 - The worlds your oyster Yoyoka 😊 👍
Yoyoka will create new paths someday soon I think.
Well, I think I'm picking up from this that our Yoyoka has ambitions to be like the great Prince. And I can see her being every bit as great, and as creative. I can't wait to see what she brings us in the future.
Im an Old Dude.... I alway think of Joni Mitchell when I see Yoyoka... whatever transpires...
We are the fortunate ones... No Doubt!!!
Awesome, the subtitles are working today.
Prince and mj are up there I’m heaven proud of you, yoyo
HER skills are inspiring a well skilled proffersor highly deserved both magic rock on empress.
Thank you for interviewing this intelligent and thoughtful young lady, and for providing the subtitles. (I always enjoy your input on Cool Japan, too!😉👍)
Finally English subtitles with this I've been wanting to hear this conversation! She is so humble and so unpretentious I love that about her
“I like Picasso“... wow! words from someone so young are really comforting. Well...she's not just any girl, she's Yoyoka The Prodigy! 😊
Visiting professor Yoyoka. 😊
Yoyoka all ways remember. ... every one is my teacher that I may learn from them. All the very best in life for U you are a very special lady it is just starting for u stay safe keep on rocking U the man Girl. .... much love kid.
When she said her music creations tend to come in different patterns, I got goose bumps. All great artists experienced that but she's 11 casually explaining it to us mere mortals.
Even yoyoka cant explain her gift. What a gracious young lady. Well done on getting the honor from IU
The difference between You, Yoyoka and the one you are talking to, You live through you're soul, energy and what you feel about. I love you very much YOYOKA 😊✌🙏 !!! Dan T from Mirabel, Québec, Canada.
A generous, intellectual professor communicating with an incredibly worldly soul of 11: as equals.
A discourse with genuine connection, understanding and respect.
I especially admire his last observation and comment. 👏👍
Only a big old soul can talk like you do Yoyoka !! This is another why I believe about reincarnation !! You are giving us a big lesson about it YOYOKA !!
This is Yoyoka being Yoyoka. Already a seasoned professional sharing her experiences and wisdom with the world. Too bad this doesn't have English sub titles. She is really on her way.
I added English subtitles!
@@iUCHANNEL Thanks I loved it!
To be so proficient at drums at such a young age and still be a well rounded and balanced individual is amazing.
it shows how much can be achieved with a supportive family and finding the fun in what you do
Prince was a great musician and songwriter, so she's had great inspiration
Yoyoka like Prince...
Girl you won my heart for ever.
Much love.
Sure wish we had some subtitles. DANG, she's growing up scary quick.
I added English subtitles!!
@@iUCHANNEL
🌞👍
Simple songs - 1 or 2 listens and she has the drum pattern .. more difficult songs may take 4 or 5 listens . WHAT!!
What an inspring interview
She’s gone through a growth spurt…
And usually when children go through a growth spurt, many of them become, for a certain period of time, pretty uncoordinated : it's like it takes time for their brains to adjust to their bodies' and limbs' new size.
Well, perhaps drumming helps in that adjustment. Sports surely do.
Another thing that I noticed is her posture in this video.
She "grooves" herself while she plays, moving her body back and forth, ( sort of dancing while she plays) which means that her basic rhythm comes from her core muscles.
Her postural control indicates that she might have great core strength and also increased postural awareness.
(By the way, please forgive me for this long comment - I'm a professional Physical Therapist - when you mentioned growth spurt.... I just couldn't help it).
good video, thanks
Don’t know what they were talking about, but kind of disappointed Yoyoka didn’t get on that kit and play something.
I added English subtitles!
It is obvious that Yoyoka is a prodigy, and by some luck or circumstance she was born into a family environment that offered her free choice to discover her instrument. No doubt she will continue to grow and develop in so many ways. How many 11 year olds do you know that can discuss in detail the merits of Picassos early works compared to his later stages, truly a clear thinking young woman. I'm continually impressed.
I do not know much Japanese but what I get from their interaction is a peaceful , constructive, intelligent, enjoyable, and meaningful conversation. :-)
Yes ! She is a gem in the music world..
Yoyoka looks like a grown up but always very matured. Wish someone can do an English subtitle for this.
I added English subtitles!
@@iUCHANNEL thank you so much.
Hmmm, Professor Yoyoka. Neil Peart was known as the professor. Coincidence? I think not!
Fantastic interview by two very intelligent people. Yoyoka.
May you achieve everything you put your mind to.
God bless and best wishes ,love from Ireland 🇮🇪
Hi Yoyoka drummer 👋
Great!
Such maturity for an 11 year old. You are most welcome to visit Norway, Yoyoka. You will be inspired by our nature :)
I always believe about reincarnation and for me, it's evident that you are the reincarnation of one of the world past best drummer ! Why not Buddy Rich !!
Professor.....I understand your dilemma.... trying to equate Yoyoka to meare mortals..... Is not possible 😎🤣
I think Yoyoka will get bored without challenge. She will always look for what challenges her, despite the fact that she may not be as good as that which no longer challenges her.
Well Yoyoka, what ever you want in your life I wish you all the best.
I really hope you keep Rocking those drums.
👋🙂👍 ❤🇬🇧
In her band? You better be very good. She is.
👍👍 to the subtitles.
I added English subtitles!
She is a special person, a very interesting, young lady. Her complaints about school reminds me of Eric Weinstein and Joscha Bach views of schools / education, and educators... Her skill as a drummer is outstanding / extraordinary, or rather super human.... I wish to all Young Japanese a new youthful - trend, with less mannerism, and more creativity in non technological terms...
Exactly
If you start adapting to an instrument at such a young age, the brain learns quickly, and then more skills accumulate while still very young, so that mastery
comes quicker than a student starting in their teenage years. The human mind is more adaptable in earlier years. Languages come easier, too. Geniuses can
master an instrument or a language as a teenager rather impressively, but a intelligent person would find mastery a tough thing to achieve, and the normal person
may find it frustrating and quit. Important to provide an environment of learning for children early in their lives, without being pushy or forceful about it.
Reading music is an advantage, and it is sad that so many young people don't want to learn to read music. Today's educational system has been "dumb down"
to such an extent, that kids learn very little. I'm 70 years old, and I was taught to read music in 4th grade class. The age of eight is really starting too late. The
younger, the better.
So true- the years between 2yo and 5yo are so important for learning. If you lived with bilingual parents you would learnt two languages without any real effort.
You want to challeng !! 35 years ago, I was a drummer like you and the name of my band was : Challenge !!!
No, being musically literate does NOT prevent you from laying down a groove. Being able to read music is just another musical input source and it gives you a way to write music down if you want to. It in no way prevents you from learning by ear. There is no musical subtraction from the ability to read, and in Yoyoka’s case the ability to read can make more studio gigs available. I’m classically trained in piano but for years the only playing I’ve been doing is rock’n’roll keys, on which I”m 100% ear based because I find it easier to learn the material by ear than by eye. Reading changes helps but that’s not reading music per se.
Thank You.....
@@johnanderson8096 No problem. Musical illiteracy is the only illiteracy people literally clap for. A really good musician says on a talk show “I don’t even read music” and the Applause light comes on. And there’s no excuse for it. It isn’t easy to get good at reading music but it’s nothing like learning another language. Depending on how interested they were and how quickly they were digesting it, I could teach someone the basics of reading music in under an hour, particularly if that hour wasn’t all presented at once. Not everything of course but enough to understand basically what’s going on and quite possibly read a few notes on their instrument.
Thank you.
Is this recorded in a library? I wish this had English subtitles...
Yes, we recorded it in the library of iU. I added English subtitles!!
@@iUCHANNEL Thank you for responding and adding the subtitles!
So, she can’t read notes of music. John Lennon or Paul Mac Cartney couldn’t either, but they created music, what changed the way of music in the 20th century! Go YOYOKA sama!

@@iUCHANNEL thank you!
Professor Yoyoka.
Wish there was a decent translation to English !.....I hope they are not pushing this free spirit into some stifling, inflexible, academic mold !....she's still a kid. She has NO NEED to predict her future, career, etc. She only needs to breathe in--and breathe out:music.apparently.

I've been teaching in Japan for some time and something strange I've noticed is that the kids are becoming huge. Yoyoka is 11 years old and she already seems taller than this dude. Granted he's not the biggest guy. But she's 11😨😨 wtf
WHAT HAPPENED TO LITTLE YOYOKA, SHE IS GETTING OLDER AND BIGGER TOO FAST. 👍🎶🎧🎹🎸🎼🎵
